Last night, thunderstorms brought additional precipitation to the fire area further moderating fire activity. Today crews
continued working on mop-up actions and constructing fuel breaks and improving containment lines around the fire area.
Over the next few days, the Great Basin team will be right-sizing the number of personnel assigned and transition control
back to the local forest staff.

Going forward, updated information will be available online via InciWeb or the Boise National Forest Facebook page.

Weather: High pressure is building over the region and is expected to bring temperatures into the 70s and lower 80s. A
cold front is expected to cross the area Tuesday afternoon bringing increasing southwest to west winds with chances
of showers and thunderstorms. Winds may gust to 30 mph on the ridges during the afternoon. Much cooler conditions
will move in behind the front for the middle of the week.

Tyee Ridge Complex Evening Update 082723

Related Incident: Tyee Ridge Complex
Publication Type: Announcement

Date: August, 27, 2023

Acreage: 2,002 acres

Containment: 5%

Today, crews saw continued active fire behavior. The Cougar Creek and Rattlesnake Ridge fires on the SW side of the Complex grew together last night and crossed Hubbard Creek Road. This combined fire is now known as the Cougar Creek Fire. Two task forces worked to protect structures in this area and line was
established around five spot fires. No structures have been destroyed. The four fires in the Lighthouse area merged into two and showed some uphill runs and spotting. One task force completed structure preparation on Lighthouse Road and moved to the Tyee Mountain Fire east of Fanchin Lane. The Tyee Mountain Fire became active in the late afternoon and helicopters assisted by dropping water. To the north, efforts continued to hold and improve line on the Big Tom Fire.

Firefighters and equipment continued arriving today from around the nation with many national resources. Two additional Oregon State Fire Marshal structural task forces arrived from Clatsop County and Yamhill County. A total of seven task forces are currently engaged in structure protection.

Night operations will focus on getting the relatively small fires controlled, including Big Tom and Tyee Mountain, and continued structure protection on Hubbard Creek Road. This will help keep resources available for any new fire starts and for ongoing efforts on larger fires.

Challenges for firefighters include steep terrain, rolling material, snags, and limited road access. Dry fuels and topography are driving fire behavior. Twelve helicopters are in use, but heavy smoke and low visibility has not allowed for fixed-wing aircraft. Weather is expected to be in the high 70s tomorrow with
continued heavy smoke. Winds will be 2 to 5 miles per hour from the NW.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office issued a new Level 1 (Be Ready) evacuation notice for Tyee Road at the intersection with Rock Creek Road to Fanchin Lane to include all residences in between. All other evacuation notices remain unchanged. A total of 72 structures are under Level 3 (Go Now!) evacuation
orders, 37 structures are at Level 2 (Be Set), and 38 are at Level 1 (Be Ready). An estimated 125 people have evacuated. Douglas County Emergency Management and the Red Cross have a shelter for evacuees at the Oakland Elementary School at 499 NE Spruce Street in Oakland. To shelter livestock, contact Douglas County Fairgrounds at 541-957-7010. Companion pets can be sheltered at Saving Grace Pet Adoption Center in Roseburg. To view the current evacuation information map, go to www.dcso.com/evacuations.

Community Meeting Scheduled: The Tyee Ridge Complex management teams will be holding a community meeting tomorrow, Monday, Aug. 28, 2023 at 7 p.m. Location on: Roseburg Country Club, 5051 Garden Valley Road, Roseburg; and streamed on Facebook Live.

Evacuations: Level 3 (Go Now!) from the 11000 block of Hubbard Creek Rd. to Millwood Dr. Level 2 (Be
Set) from Hubbard Creek Rd. from the Millwood Dr. intersection to Melqua Rd. Level 1 (Be Ready) for Tyee Road at the intersection with Rock Creek Road to Fanchin Lane.

Closures: On Hubbard Creek Road at Millwood Drive. Please avoid unnecessary travel to that area.

183 People Evacuated and 164 Structures Threatened.

WEST SIDE OVERVIEW (ACRES/CONTAINMENT): Elliot (5,730 acres, 3%), Swillup (2,147 acres, 0%), Malone (478 acres, 7%), Ufish (1,562 acres, 0%)

The fires on the west side of the Happy Camp Complex were active today. The Malone Fire began to spread to the south, and fire crews began a tactical firing operation to keep the fire from spotting across the indirect containment lines. Crews are firing along Titus Ridge and plan to stop once they reach Titus Peak. The area will be patrolled throughout the night for any areas of concern. The Ufish Fire was also active this afternoon, and a tactical firing operation is planned for this evening.

Across Highway 96, the Elliot Fire spread north and joined the Swillup Fire. Firefighters were able to hold containment lines on the north end of the Swillup Fire. Crews scouted for opportunities west of the fire to construct an indirect fire line. Highway 96 corridor remains a concern due to rolling debris.

.EAST SIDE OVERVIEW (ACRES/CONTAINMENT): Head (6,843 acres, 31%), Block (0.1 acres, 100%), Townsend (81 acres, 100%), Den (294 acres, 100%), Scott (1,870 acres, 67%), Lake (199, acres, 5%)

Today, fire crews constructed direct fire lines on the Head Fire. They focused on building fire lines across the west and north flanks and improving the existing fire line on the east side.  On the Scott Fire, pockets of vegetation within the interior are still burning, and CAL FIRE resources are working to improve the fire line and monitor Scott River Road.  The Den Fire was declared 100% contained today.

Evacuaciones:

Klamath National Forest Fire Activity Update August 27 2023

Klamath National Forest Fire Activity Update – August 27, 2023

Yreka, Calif. – An inversion layer from smoky conditions will persist across the Klamath National Forest in the coming days. Smoke can help moderate burning conditions, but also limits the visibility across the region. The heavy smoke in many areas makes it challenging to identify and safely access newly reported wildfires. Since the last report, three additional fires not associated with the Happy Camp Complex have been called out, and no new fires have been reported; however, new fires from recent lightning activity could still be identified in the coming days.

Fire officials have declared the following fires out. They will no longer be reported on: Box Fire, Browns Fire, and Grizzley Fire.

Happy Camp/Oak Knoll District:

  • The Red Fire has been reported south of Red Hill. To date, crews have been unable to locate the fire but will continue searching.
  • The Vann Fire has been reported three miles west of Elbow Springs in the Vann Creek Drainage. To date, crews have been unable to locate the fire but will continue searching.
  • The Dillon Fire is northwest of the North Fork of Dillon Creek. The acreage is unknown. Heli-rappelers were unable to access the fire yesterday due to heavy smoke from the Elliot Fire. Fire officials are working to identify options to safely access the fire.
  • The Donkey Fire is near Pony Peak and adjacent to the Elliot Fire. The acreage is unknown due to smoky conditions. Fire officials are working to identify options to safely access the fire due to its proximity to the Elliot Fire.
  • The Berry Fire near Huckleberry Mountain is approximately 0.2 acres. The fire is controlled and in patrol status.
  • The Capitan Fire near Capitan Mountain is approximately 2 acres. The fire is controlled and in patrol status.
  • The Titus Fire in the Marble Mountain Wilderness south of Norcross Campground is approximately 64 acres. Smokejumpers will be inserted into this fire today to assist with implementing a confine and contain strategy. The fire is in difficult to reach terrain with low probability of continuing to spread due to natural barriers, sparse fuels, and previous burn scars. Aviation resources are being used as needed to keep the fire in its current footprint.

Salmon/Scott River Ranger District:

  • No active fires to report.

Goosenest Ranger District:

  • No active fires to report.

Evacuation Orders and Warnings: Evacuation orders and warnings remain in effect. Monitor CodeRED and the Siskiyou County Sheriff Facebook Page for current information.

Forest Closures: The Klamath National Forest has issued an emergency closure order for two portions of the forest:

  • Happy Camp Ranger District Closure Location: The closure order extends from Happy Camp south to the Marble Mountain Wilderness boundary at Norcross Recreation Area. The closure continues west along the edge of the Marble Mountain Wilderness to the Siskiyou Wilderness boundary. From there, the closure runs north along the Siskiyou Wilderness, down Clear Creek to Highway 96, and then north back to Happy Camp near Curly Jack Campground. Happy Camp District Closure Map: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd1132183.pdf

  • Oak Knoll and Scott River Ranger Districts Closure Area: The closure order is generally northwest of Scott Valley and includes some of the Marble Mountain Wilderness near Lover’s Camp. From the Wilderness boundary, the closure continues along Grider Creek north to Seiad Valley. The closure extends northeast of Seiad Valley to areas north of the Klamath River. Oak Knoll and Scott River Districts Closure Map: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd1132187.pdf

The Pacific Crest Trail: The Pacific Crest Trail is closed between the Shelly Fork Junction and Seiad as part of an area closure under Forest Order 05-05-23-07. It is suggested that northbound through-hikers exit the trail at Etna Summit and resume northward travel from Seiad.

Highway 96 is open with one-way traffic control. This is subject to change based on current fire conditions. Visit quickmap.dot.ca.gov for the most up-to-date information on road closures.
