Valentine Fire community meeting tonight in Christopher Creek
August 28, 2023 – Daily Update
Size: 14 acres
Start Date: August 16, 2023
Cause: Lightning
Completion: 29%
Total personnel: 272
Location: 11 miles northeast of Young, Arizona and 27 miles east of Payson, Arizona
Fuels: Hardwood litter and timber
Highlights: The Southwest Area Type 2 Incident Management Team 4 will host a community meeting tonight, on Monday, August 28, at 7:00 PM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 546 W. Ashby Apple Drive, Payson, AZ. The meeting will include presentations from the incident management team and the Tonto National Forest, followed by a question and answer session. American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation will be provided.
Operations: The Valentine Fire acreage remains unchanged from yesterday. Higher humidity in the area is preventing fuels from drying out, resulting in minimal potential for growth along the edges of the fire. Crews have successfully completed 100% of planned line preparation and 90% of the point protection efforts, resulting in an overall increase in completion of operational objectives to 29%. Firefighters are now focusing their efforts on assessing repair needs along dozer lines and scouting for potential contingency lines as an added layer of protection for adjacent communities. Firefighters have assessed all structures in the Colcord Mountain Estates and Ponderosa Spring subdivisions to develop a structure protection plan that identifies any actions and/or resources needed in the event of a future fire in the area. The objectives of the Valentine Fire, include line preparation and point protection, are designed to support the Forest Service Wildfire Crisis Strategy, a national strategy to address the wildfire crisis in places where it poses the most immediate threats to communities. To learn more about the Wildfire Crisis Strategy, please visit: https://www.fs.usda.gov/managing-land/wildfire-crisis.
Weather: Conditions will be mostly clear, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon. A slight chance for afternoon showers and thunderstorms exists, although most of the shower activity is expected to be south of the fire area. However, outflow winds from distant thunderstorms could still affect the area. Overall winds will be light and mainly terrain-driven with a noticeable westerly component developing in the afternoon. Temperatures will be above normal in the middle to upper 80s. A drier air mass in place will result in lower humidity today, dropping into the 20-25% this afternoon.
Closures: The Tonto National Forest has issued an emergency area closure for the Valentine Fire. The purpose of the closure order is to protect public health and safety during the Valentine Fire, and to protect assigned firefighting personnel engaging in wildland firefighting operations. The full closure order (No. 03-12-05-23-22) and map are available on the Tonto National Forest website: https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/tonto/alerts-notices/?aid=82769.
Safety: The health and safety of firefighters and the public are always the first priority. Members of the public should stay away from Valentine Fire operations. A temporary flight restriction (TFR) is in place over the area, which includes unmanned aircraft, or drones. More information on the dangers drones pose to wildland firefighting aircraft and personnel on the ground can be found at: https://uas.nifc.gov/.
Smoke: Smoke from the Valentine Fire may be visible in the surrounding areas. Learn more about smoke impacts on the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality website at https://azdeq.gov/wildfire-faqs.

Hoselay along fireline delivering water for mop-up operations
Yesterday’s Events:
Fireline created by heavy equipment
Where the fire was more active, crews carried out small scale burnout operations, removing fuels near firelines. Helicopters performed bucket drops to cool hot spots which supported firefighters on the line. On less active parts of the fire, damp fuels and inconsistent fuel loading hampered burning efforts. Night operations continued with logging equipment loading logs and slash, removing them from the fire area.
Plans for Today: Firefighters anticipate warmer and drier conditions which will make fuels more receptive for burnout operations. Unmanned aerial systems (drones) equipped with plastic sphere dispensers (“ping pong balls”) will safely “put fire” on the ground in strategic locations. Elsewhere on the fire, crews will continue to cool off smoldering logs using hoselays and hand tools. The public may see smoke today as the fire continues to slowly grow and unburned interior fuels are consumed. According to Fire Behavior Analyst Eric Trimble, the risk for significant fire spread on Monday is relatively low.
Weather Update: Temperatures will be a few degrees warmer than yesterday and relative humidity will be slightly lower. A cold front approaching the area on Tuesday will bring rain in the evening, continuing on Wednesday. A short duration wind event may precede the rain on Tuesday evening.
Evacuations: Some communities remain in a Pre-Evacuation Warning. Residents may return to their homes under a Pre-Evacuation Warning, but may need to leave again on short notice. For more information, go to the Lincoln County and Flathead County Sheriff’s Department Facebook pages.
Public Meetings: No public meetings are scheduled at this time, though fire personnel are available to address questions or concerns via the email address and telephone number noted above.

Smith River Complex North update for Monday, August 28, 2023
GRANTS PASS, Ore. – Saturday evening, firefighters working the night shift on the Smith River Complex North began tactical firing operations on fire lines near Gilligan Butte. Burning fuels between the fire line and the fire is a critical step in securing this line. Night shift firefighters succeeded in firing much of the line west of Gilligan Butte toward the 4402 Road.
Day shift firefighters continued this firing Sunday along the primary containment line on the south and southwest side of Gilligan Butte, reaching the 4402 Road. Currently, firefighters are conducting the same work along the 4402 Road south. These efforts help reduce fire spread that would impact homes in the southern Illinois Valley. Extensive mop-up work will be needed along these lines before they can be considered “contained.”
Smoky conditions continue to restrict aerial operations. Visibility was down to a quarter mile much of the day, making aerial operations unsafe. Firefighters on the ground also struggled with poor visibility. Winds generally from the north are predicted for the next few days and may push smoke to the south, but smoke from other fires in the Pacific Northwest is likely to adversely impact operations throughout the Smith River Complex North.
Firefighters continue to concentrate on protecting the communities and scattered structures near O’Brien and Takilma, and along Lone Mountain Road.
A Level 3 – GO NOW evacuation remains in place for the Hwy 199 area south of O’Brien from milepost 38 to the state line. A Level 2 – GET SET evacuation is in place for O’Brien and the Takilma area. A Level 1 – GET READY evacuation is in place north to Cave Junction. The American Red Cross has set up an evacuation shelter at Rogue Community College in Grants Pass. Livestock can be sheltered at the Josephine County Fairgrounds.
Due to increased fire activity, the public is encouraged to monitor the Rogue Valley Emergency Management site at https://rvem.org for evacuation updates and sign up for Citizen Alert if you have not already done so. An interactive Fire First Response Map showing evacuation areas can also be found there.
Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest has implemented an area and road closure order for the Smith River Complex. Visit the forest website for additional information at https://tinyurl.com/2s4hymku. The Bureau of Land Management Coos Bay District announced an emergency closure of public lands south of Waldo Road and Happy Camp Road to the Oregon/California border. Additional information can be found at https://www.blm.gov/orwafire.
A community meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28, at Illinois Valley High School, 625 E. River St., Cave Junction. The meeting will also be live-streamed on the Smith River Complex North 2023 Facebook page.

Total Personnel: 711 Crews: 15 Engines: 45 Helicopters: 6
KEY MESSAGE: Smoke from the fire’s northwest corner was visible from Plains yesterday as fire crews conducted a limited firing operation north of Pat’s Knob. This operation’s intent is to aid in securing the control line by removing unburnt vegetation in advance of the fire’s active fire edge. Additional firing operations are planned for today on a small triangle section just north of the fire upslope and west of River Road East. Smoke from this area will also be visible from Plains today.
CURRENT STATUS: Yesterday, crews continued to improve control line on the north side of the fire both west and east of Henry’s Peak. Crews continued to work on direct control line on the fire’s east flank which is along the Lolo National Forest and CSKT boundary. On the southeast corner, firefighters and equipment completed the indirect control line near the forest and CSKT boundary south to the Flathead River. Patrolling and mop up work continued along the fire edge within the Highway 200 corridor near Paradise. A heavy equipment task force improved the shaded fuels break line along the western side of the fire near Pat’s Knob. Helicopters were utilized for water drops in key areas to reduce heat and extinguish fire. Firing operations were completed near the northwest corner of the fire and the night shift monitored that area to keep it secure.
PLANNED ACTIONS: Another day of hot and dry conditions will lead to increased smoke visible from interior locations on the fire. Crews will work on connecting control lines along the northern edge of the fire near Henry’s Peak. There are some areas of the fire’s edge along the eastern side where crews will continue to keep working on control line construction and strengthening along the National Forest and CSKT boundary. Within a large unburned island on the east side, control line construction will continue working towards the southeast. There is a pocket of heat on the south side of the fire along the Flathead River that will be monitored and cooled with helicopter water buckets if needed. Control line construction will progress on the southwest corner of the fire south of Pat’s Knob. Engine crews will patrol the Highway 200 corridor control lines near Paradise to make sure they are secure. The Structure Protection Group remains prepared to respond as necessary. A burning operation is planned on the fire’s northwest edge, west of the River Road East about 3 miles south of Plains to secure that edge of the fire. Smoke from the firing operations will be visible from the Highway 200 corridor.
WEATHER: The weather will be mostly sunny with temperatures from 85-95 degrees in the valleys and 75-85 degrees on the ridges. Relative humidity levels will drop to 16-26%. Winds will be from the east at 5-10 mph.

Big Knife Update August 28 2023
Related Incident: Big Knife
Publication Type: News
Suppression repair work continues today with crews and equipment working to naturalize handline, dozer line, and a helispot. Structure protection is being removed in pre-identified areas and backhauled to camp. The current incident management team is preparing to transition command to the local unit on Wednesday at 6 A.M.
The Cheyenne and Arapahoe Tribes camp crew is hard at work, rolling the removed hose and taking inventory of the pumps, fittings, and water reservoirs. In the last week, the crew rolled about 60,000 feet of hose and organized over 300 hose fittings. Traveling two and a half days from northwest Oklahoma, the Concho Agency eight-person crew have diligently been keeping the Big Knife camp running. The crew does everything from restocking coolers, hanging glow sticks at night to identify foot bridges and issuing fire equipment supplies, to distributing lunch and providing facility maintenance.
The Big Knife Fire is currently 1.25 miles north of the Rattlesnake Wilderness Boundary (Lolo National Forest) with no significant growth towards the Lolo National Forest in the last week. Smoke from the fire may impact the Snowbowl area, however the Lolo National Forest does not have any forest closures in place on the Missoula Ranger District.
CLOSURES AND SPECIAL MESSAGES: Several areas near the base of the mountains west of the Big Knife Fire remain in PRE-EVACUATION WARNING by order of the Lake County Sheriff. See the map for those locations in yellow (Jocko, Canal, Francis). The Tribal Primitive Area, Belmore Slough and Burnt Cabin Roads are closed.
A PRE-EVACUATION WARNING means you may remain in your home. Individuals in this status should not bring back evacuated livestock until this status is lifted.
A temporary flight restriction (TFR) is in effect around the fire area. Do not fly unmanned aircraft (drones) near the fire areas.
Weather: Another hot and dry day today before a change in the weather pattern comes late Tuesday afternoon. Today, we’ll see temperatures in the lower to mid-80s in the valleys, relative humidities in the upper teens and 20s, and light winds. In the forecast for Tuesday, an approaching storm cell and its cold front brings at least wetting rain, with up to 0.75 inches possible.
FIRE RESTRICTIONS: Stage 1 fire restrictions are currently in place across the Flathead Indian Reservation and Lake County. Stage 1 fire restrictions remain in place in Granite County. In Stage 1 fire restrictions the following are prohibited until rescinded: Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire or campfire except within a developed recreation site or improved site. Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials. On the Flathead Reservation, operating a motorized vehicles off designated roads and trails. Visit https://www.mtfireinfo.org/ for more fire restriction information across Montana. ###

Final Update for the Black Feather Fire
Highlights: The type 3 team will be transferring command to the local district and transitioning on Thursday August 31st at 7am. The crews and equipment have made great progress on the Black Feather fire. UAS pilots flew the UAS (Unmanned aircraft system) with infrared capabilities and scouted for hotspots and any areas of concern. While in flight the UAS (Unmanned aircraft system) only found one area of heat. Crews were able to access the area and address the heat. The Black Feather fire received significant rainfall the past few days aiding the crews in suppressing the fire.
Hand crews gained more progress in the wilderness in continuing and secure the fires edge. Engine crews outside of the wilderness have been patrolling and monitoring the fires edge along with securing any hotspots or smoke showing within the fire's perimeter.
Operations: Suppression efforts are continuing within the wilderness and along the fires edge. Crews and engines are actively suppressing and monitoring activities in relation to weather and fire behavior to ensure incident objectives are met while remaining focused on firefighter safety.
Safety: Equipment and fire crews are actively moving in and around the fire area. Please use caution when traveling around the Black Feather Fire. The Temporary Flight Restriction is still in place. Please do not fly drones anywhere near the fire. If you fly, we can’t fly.
Weather: Storm chances will continue to trend down through the rest of the week, while temperatures trend upward a few degrees. Strong winds will be associated with thunderstorms along with outflow winds. Scattered showers and thunderstorms through the afternoon and evening.
Restrictions/Closures: Effective Monday, August 21, the Santa Fe National Forest has issued an updated area, road, and trail closure in part of the Coyote Ranger District. See https://bit.ly/BlackFeatherClosureUpdate for information and a corresponding map. Forest Road 103 is now open. Closures will be adjusted based on fire activity. All closures will be lifted starting Wednesday August 30th, Firefighters will still be in the area.
Deep Fire Update August 28 2023
Related Incident: Deep Fire
Publication Type: News
CURRENT SITUATION
The Deep Fire is currently mapped at 3,852 acres and is 58% contained.
Minor additional growth was observed yesterday as the fire continued to back into Little Salt Creek. This steep drainage is inaccessible to firefighters, and aircraft was used to slow the spread. Should the fire cross Little Salt Creek, it would run into rock, and therefore doesn’t pose threat to containment. However, crews are continuing line construction north along the Stuart Fork to ensure that should the fire build momentum it is unable to cross the Stuart Fork. The Deer Creek Trail has been identified as a good holding feature, and firefighters are positioning themselves to continue containment efforts there should it become necessary.
Isolated heat sources are apparent throughout the fire area, even as firefighters mop up as far within the perimeter as is safe. Fire-weakened trees continue to fall and roll down steep slopes, occasionally igniting previously unburned vegetation. Aircraft is being utilized to help cool down any interior hot spots that firefighters can’t reach. There is still significant risk to firefighters and the public inside the fire perimeter, and a Forest Closure remains in place.
WEATHER
The weather today is expected to trend slightly cooler as a weak system moves in from the ocean. Winds from the north/northeast could become gusty in the afternoon.
