Ridge Creek Fire Update for August 28 2023
Related Incident:
Publication Type: News
Location: Approximately 3.5 miles east of the north tip of Hayden Lake, along the Hayden Creek Road (Forest Service Road 437) from the Ridge Creek drainage to South Chilco Mountain.
Start Date: 8/3/2023 Cause: Undetermined Size: 4,359 acres Containment: 32%
Total Personnel: 471 Heavy Equipment: 19 Engines: 16 Crews: 13
FIRE STATUS
Firefighters continue efforts on both primary containment lines and contingency lines on the Ridge Creek Fire. Little fire growth occurred yesterday. Last night’s infrared flight provided information on heat sources. Resources in all divisions will seek and extinguish these heat signatures.
On the eastern side of the fire, crews continue indirect line work on Forest Service Roads 437 and 1507. Road and line improvement efforts continue as the division moves toward patrol status. Multiple resources remain in the area to ensure that mitigation measures are in place as smoldering and creeping fire behavior persists.
To the north, where steep and rocky terrain present challenges, resources work to identify ridges and roads to use in more direct fire line construction. Firefighters have completed handline on Forest Service Road 406 M where fire has backed down to the dozer line. On Bunco Road, chipping operations are nearly complete.
Firefighters have established fireline on the west side of the fire to prevent its spread. Mechanical treatment and hand crews are snagging hazard trees and chipping on the south end of Forest Service Road 625 and grading and repairing dozer line on Forest Service Road 206. Division resources expect to finalize contingency lines here in the near future.
Aviation resources continue to assist firefighters on the ground. Helicopters are making water drops in key areas to reduce heat and extinguish fire where needed.
The structure protection group is working with local cooperators in the Trapper’s Creek and Bunco Road communities to monitor fire conditions.
WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR
Yesterday was warmer and drier than predicted. Today’s forecast calls for little to no cloud cover, maximum temperatures in the 90s at 4000 feet, zero chance of rain and low humidity. These combined conditions have the potential to increase fire behavior. Fire potential is greater today than it has been during the last several days.

At 12:16 pm on Aug. 24th, Texas A&M Forest Service received a request for assistance for a fire on County Road (CO) 032 off State Highway 63, approximately 15 miles northwest of Jasper, Texas. The fire is actively burning in mixed oak/pine timber with grass and yaupon understory.
In coordination with local fire departments, crews from Texas A&M Forest Service, Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System, and out-of-state resources continue mop-up operations and patrolling containment lines for hotspots. Last night’s thunderstorms bought beneficial precipitation on the fire. A drone flight was completed earlier this morning to assist crews with locating any remaining heat sources.
A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) has been ordered for the area over the fire, [NOTAM: FDC 3/1024, https://tfr.faa.gov/save_pages/detail_3_1287.html]. Please avoid the area to provide a safe environment for incoming firefighting aircraft.
Weather:
Hot and relatively dry conditions will continue today. The relative humidity is expected to rise to the mid 40’s from yesterday's isolated showers and thunderstorms. Those isolated storms will continue today, and wind speeds will between 5-10 mph out of the north.
Closures & Evacuations:
The fire initially prompted evacuations and road closures throughout the area. As of 6 p.m. on Aug. 26, all evacuation orders have been lifted. There are no road closures in place currently. Additional information can be found on www.drivetexas.org.
Damages:
A Texas A&M Forest Service Post Fire Assessment Team (PFAT) was brought in on August 25, 2023, to assess the fire area and to determine any damage on the Shearwood Creek Fire. Currently, a total of 15 structures have been lost. Sixty homes have been saved with an additional 4 homes being directly saved from firefighter efforts.

Camp Creek Fire Update for Monday August 28
Related Incident: Camp Creek Fire
Publication Type: News
Weather and Fire Behavior: The Camp Creek Fire in the Bull Run Watershed northeast of Sandy was sparked by lightning on Thursday, August 24, and has grown to around 1,600 acres with 0% containment. Yesterday’s somewhat more favorable weather conditions moderated fire behavior and limited growth. The fire stayed mostly in its footprint from Friday. The fire burned in heavy fuels, and it continued to move up drainage to the northeast and east.
Bull Run Watershed is a dense temperate rainforest with many down and dead trees and deep forest duff, and this abundance of material provided plenty of receptive fuel, causing the fire again to put up a large smoke column. Rain showers and isolated thunderstorms are possible this evening, but warm and dry weather conditions are expected to continue today and into the future. Southwesterly winds are expected to remain generally light.
Operations: Firefighters focus on full suppression of the fire, using fire crews taking action to limit growth to the north, west, and south assisted by water dropped from heavy helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. Currently, the helicopters are dipping water out of the Bull Run Reservoir #1and the airplanes are scooping water from the Columbia River. No fire retardant is being used, but it could be if needed to help contain the fire along Forest Road (FR) 14 on the fire’s southern flank. Ground crews are utilizing FR 12 on the northern flank of the fire and FR 14 on the southern flank to construct containment lines. Hand crews are constructing containment line between the two roads to the west of the fire. Crews face numerous safety hazards, including threats posed by falling fire-weakened trees and travel on narrow, winding roads. The Great Basin Team has ordered additional crews, engines, and heavy equipment and residents will notice an increasing number of firefighters assigned to the fire in coming days.
The Great Basin Team 1 has been working closely with Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency manager to develop contingency plans to notify residents of possible evacuations should the fire spread out of the Bull Run Watershed. https://www.clackamas.us/wildfires
