Update as of: August 17, 2024
Estimated size: 317 acres (decreased due to increased mapping accuracy)
Containment: 0%
Start Date/Time: 8/14/2024 at 5:00 PM
Area of Origin: West of Brinnon, North of Duckabush Rd. on Mt. Jupiter
Cause: Undetermined
Structures Damaged: None
Update: The Georgia Forestry Commission Type 3 Incident Management Team is now assisting the WA DNR Type 3 Incident Management Team with fire suppression activities. There are now 162 resources assigned to the fire including planning and logistics personnel, engine and equipment crews, along with hand crews, Hot Shot crews and aerial resources.
We are currently at National Preparedness Level of 5, which is the highest level on the National Fire Preparedness Level scale used by the US Fire Management Community. It indicates that wildfire activity is extreme across the country and that fire suppression resources are stretched to their limits. This level reflects sever wildfire conditions and the high demand for firefighting resources nationwide. Due to the lack of available resources, 2620 Road containment could be extended.
The 2620 Road fire remains active in a recently logged area with steep terrain and heavy fuels. Structure protection crews continue to work around homes and structures, while other crews work on establishing machine and hand lines. Air resources were able to operate later in the day to help suppression efforts on the ground.
Weather: Forecasted storm potential for Saturday afternoon may bring erratic winds and changes in fire behavior. Fire weather experts and Incident Management will be monitoring the weather and will change tactics to adjust for changes in fire activity.
Road Closures: Duckabush Road and Mt. Jupiter Road (2620 Road) remain closed except for residents on these roads.
Forest Closures: Olympic National Forest has updated closures are located at www.fs.usda.gov and Olympic National Forest – Alert and Closures web page
Air Space Restrictions: A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) remains in place over the fire. If you fly, we can’t.
Evacuation Levels/Shelters: The 2500 block and above of Duckabush Road remains at a Level 2. The 1000 block up to the 2500 block of Duckabush Road remains at a Level 1. There are no shelters open at this time.
Level 1 “GET READY” Be aware of the danger in your area and start preparing for possible evacuation. Monitor local media and check on neighbors. If you do not already have an evacuation plan or a Go! kit, assemble these now. Conditions can change suddenly, and you may not receive a Level 2 "Be Set” warning before you are ordered to Level 3 “Go!” Prepare both the inside and outside of your home for fire. Leave if you feel unsafe -- do not wait for an official evacuation order.
Level 2 “GET SET” Be prepared for sudden or short-notice evacuation. People who need help or more time to evacuate -- such as people with disabilities, people with small children, people with medical conditions, and people with large animals -- should evacuate now. Ensure your evacuation plan checklist is complete and your Go! kit is in your vehicle. Stay informed and be aware of alerts from local law enforcement and fire departments. Always remember to leave if you feel unsafe, do not wait for an official evacuation order.
Level 3 “GO NOW” Go now! Danger in your area is current or imminent and you should evacuate immediately. Follow directions from law enforcement or fire departments and do not return home until officials have determined it is safe. Notification it is safe to return home will be given as soon as possible.

Daily Update August 17, 2024
Fire Information Phone: 541-208-1768 (8 a.m.-8 p.m.)
Email: 2024.crazycreek@firenet.gov
Acres: Crazy Creek – 86,928; 87% contained
Kitty Creek – 73; 100% contained
Location: Crazy Creek: 5 miles north of Paulina, Oregon; 498/Kitty Creek: 7 miles south of Mitchell, Oregon
Start Date: July 22, 2024 Personnel: 574
Resources: 17 crews | 0 helicopters | 24 engines | 7 bulldozers | 18 water tenders | 1 masticator |
1 skid steers
Highlights: Containment lines will be tested today on the Crazy Creek Fire as winds gusting up to 30 miles an hour are forecasted out of the south throughout the day. It is some of the strongest winds hitting the fire in the last two weeks.
The Crazy Creek fire is at 86,928 acres and 87 percent containment.
The winds are ushering in increased temperatures and lower humidities into the weekend, which could result in smoldering heat sources becoming more active.
Firefighters will continue to patrol the fire’s perimeter and extinguish interior hot spots, likely more visible today as winds and heat coax “signal smokes” out of them. Crews are back in the Kitty Creek Fire restoring containment lines to a more natural state to prevent erosion and other negative effects to natural resources.
Evacuations: The Crook County Sheriff’s Office has lowered the evacuation level from Level 3 (recommended evacuation) to Level 2 (set for evacuation) from Highway 380 north to SE Puett Road. The area north of SE Puett Road around the perimeter of the fire remains at a Level 3. The area south of Highway 380 has been lowered to Level 1 (prepare for possible evacuation). An evacuation map is available online through the Crook County Emergency Management Office website.
Weather: With cooler weather moving out, summer makes its return into the area. Hot, dry weather will return with highs into the 90s. Winds out of the S at 15-20 with gusts up to 30mph and humidities topping out around 80% and dropping down into the mid-teens.
Importance of Fire Prevention: All public lands in Central Oregon, including the Ochoco National Forest, are in Stage 2 Public Use (Fire) Restrictions. All open flames, including woodstoves and charcoal briquette fires, are prohibited. In times of high fire danger, it is crucial for everyone to follow prevention measures to avoid additional strain on overburdened resources.
Fire Restrictions and Closures: The Ochoco National Forest has implemented a forest closure for the eastern portion of the Paulina Ranger District. The Bureau of Land Management has issued a temporary closure for portions of public lands in Crook and Grant Counties.

Related Incident: Whisky Creek FireSandstone Fire
Publication Type: News

Related Incident: Whisky Creek FireSandstone Fire
Publication Type: News
Whisky Creek Size: 1,951 acres | Reported Date: July 20 | Cause: Human, Under Investigation | Containment: 9% Sandstone Size: 696 acres | Reported Date: August 5 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 19% Total Resources 315 | Hand Crews: 9 | Engines: 8 | Water Tenders: 1 | Dozers: 2 | Other Heavy Equipment: 8
Highlights: Northwest Complex Incident Management Team 10, under the leadership of Incident Commander Steve North, assumed command of the Whisky Creek, Sandstone and the 17-acre Blister Creek Fires at 6 a.m. Saturday after a day of shadowing Northern Rockies Complex Incident Management Team 2. Also today, firefighters are preparing for thunderstorms that may force temporary suspension of operations if lightning and strong outflow winds result in dangerous working conditions on the fires.
Operations: Progress continues on the Whisky Creek, Sandstone and Blister Creek fires. Firefighters completed a direct handline around Blister Creek’s fire area. On Sandstone, crews tied in two sections of hand line, directly on the fire’s west and north edges. Contingency lines continue to be scouted and built on the west side of the Blister Creek and Sandstone fires.
Fire behavior is minimal on the west and north edges of the Whisky Creek Fire. A combination of favorable weather and a lack of fuels within the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire burn scar has helped firefighters keep the fire south of Mullinix Creek. Resources are focusing on the south and east perimeter of the fire. Crews continue to hold and secure portions of the containment line on the east side of the fire, while establishing hose lays and sprinklers around trouble areas along the southeast side of the fire near Black Lake. Fire managers are assessing the possibility of utilizing more aggressive fire management practices on the south edge. However, steep, rugged and dangerous terrain are making progress difficult. A large contingent of heavy equipment continues operating to establish contingency lines to the southeast of the fire.
Weather and Fire Behavior: A weather system is forecast to move in today over the Cascades, bringing in severe weather in the mid-afternoon hours. Rainfall amounts could reach 1/4 – 1/2" with as much as an inch in some areas. Lightning, hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph are possible. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect from 2 p.m. today until 2 a.m. Sunday for lands that have burned this year. High humidity and cooler temperatures will likely moderate fire behavior today and over the next few days.
Safety: Despite favorable weather conditions leading to reduced fire behavior across the landscape, the risk of potential ignitions is still extreme. The public plays an important role in preventing the next wildfire; use caution with all ignition sources. For prevention tips visit, https://keeporegongreen.org. Fire restrictions are in place within the Mt. Hood National Forest. More information can be found at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/main/mthood/fire. A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place over both the fire areas.
Smoke: Air quality is expected to be good for both fire areas. For more information on smoke conditions in your area, go to: www.AirNow.gov.
Closures: The Mount Hood National Forest and the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area closure information can be found by scanning the QR code or following the link in the bottom right corner of this page. Hood River County closure information can be found on their website: www.hoodrivercounty.gov/closures. Closures are put into place for the safety of the public and fire crews; intrusion in a closure area can interrupt fire suppression activities, endanger lives and property and can result in fines.
