Cedar Creek Fire

October 12, 2022 | Size: 122,706 acres | Contained: 38% | Start Date: August 1,2022 Origin: 15 miles east of Oakridge, OR
Cause: Lightning | Total personnel: 686Resources: 22 engines; 13 crews; 7 heavy equipment; 7 helicopters

Weather:
High pressure will remain over the fire area the rest of this week, resulting in a warming and drying trend with temperatures at least 5-10 degrees above seasonal averages. These conditions combined with increased winds will lead to critical fire weather conditions today and tomorrow. Temperatures will range from 70-80 degrees across the fire area today.

Operations: Firefighters completed fireline around 100% of both pockets of “slopover” fire on the southern fire perimeter near Lucas Lake yesterday. Both slopover areas are now surrounded by a combination of dozerline and handline and firefighters are finishing construction of a network of fire hoses to deliver water directly to containment lines. Firefighters were again assisted by water bucket drops from heavy helicopters to cool areas of active fire. Fire crews will work today to secure and strengthen these control lines.

Firefighters will be vigilant with today’s critical fire weather conditions as they patrol and defend existing control lines around the fire. Fire crews are continuing repairs around much of the fire, grading roads and clearing culverts and ditches. Along the northern fire perimeter, firefighters are patrolling for heat sources near control lines and are working to hold the fire south of the 19 Road. Firefighters are working to keep the fire north of the 4290 Road in the eastern portion of the fire, and chipping operations are ongoing near Cultus Lake to remove woody debris left over from fire suppression. There are numerous interior pockets of unburned fuel that will readily burn as the temperatures rise and the humidity drops, continuing to produce smoky conditions.

Suppression repairs on the Big Swamp and Potter Fires are ongoing as firefighters add water bars to former containment lines and restore natural drainage to areas impacted by firefighting, reducing the potential for sediment from containment lines to impact local streams and rivers.

Closures: There are closures in effect on the Deschutes National Forest and Willamette National Forest. These closures will remain in place until areas impacted by the fire are surveyed for safety risks and fire crews are able to mitigate these hazards. Please respect Forest closures for firefighter and public safety. Please visit Willamette National Forest and Deschutes National Forest for the most recent closure orders and maps. Pacific Crest Trail hikers should visit pcta.org for current information. There is a Temporary Flight Restriction over the Cedar Creek Fire area. Cedar Creek Fire Update October 11 2022

Related Incident: Cedar Creek Fire
Publication Type: News

Cedar Creek Fire

October 11, 2022 | Size: 122,463 acres | Contained: 38% | Start Date: August 1,2022 Origin: 15 miles east of Oakridge, OR
Cause: Lightning | Total personnel: 653Resources: 22 engines; 12 crews; 5 heavy equipment; 7 helicopters

Weather: High pressure is building back up over the area, which will result in a warming and drying trend for the rest of this week. Today will have the lowest temperatures over the remainder of this week, forecasted in the mid-to-upper 60s for most of the fire area.

Operations:
Firefighters made significant progress building containment lines around the “slopover” fire on the southern fire perimeter near Lucas Lake yesterday. Fire crews constructed fireline around 100% of the eastern pocket of active fire and are installing hose lays to deliver water along the containment lines. The western pocket of active fire has fire line around approximately 40% of the area perimeter. Heavy smoke yesterday made aviation access challenging; heavy helicopters flew water bucket missions to this area as conditions allowed, although fixed-wing tankers were unable to fly through the dense smoke to drop retardant. Today, firefighters will be working on completing primary containment lines around these pockets of active fire as well as scouting and preparing alternate containment lines along nearby roads and trails.

Suppression repairs continue on the northern edge of the fire and yesterday firefighters used a break in the smoke to look for heat signatures with a drone, finding few areas of active heat still remaining.  In the eastern portion of the fire, preparation work continued along the 4290 Road and firefighters chipped fuels remaining from earlier fireline construction.

Fire crews continue to patrol for areas of heat remaining near control lines elsewhere around the fire. Firefighters are working today on backhaul of equipment and hoses from areas where it is no longer needed for fire suppression, collecting and removing this excess equipment from control lines, roads, and staging areas. Fire crews are working on a variety of suppression repair around much of the fire today, grading roads, cleaning ditches and culverts, chipping fuels left from suppression efforts, and removing hazard trees along interior road systems.

Fire suppression repairs on the Big Swamp and Potter Fires are ongoing to clean out culverts and roadside ditches and restore roads to their pre-fire condition.

Closures:
There are closures in effect on the Deschutes National Forest and Willamette National Forest. Wildfires are a No Drone Zone - if you fly, we can’t.

Smoke:
The fire will continue to produce smoky conditions for the communities of Oakridge, Crescent Lake, and La Pine. Continued Unhealthy to Hazardous conditions persist in Oakridge with possible improved air quality this evening. Unhealthy conditions are predicted to continue at Crescent Lake as well as increased smoke conditions for the communities of La Pine and Bend. For current conditions, see Fire.airnow.gov, oakridgeair.org, and LRAPA - Today's Current Air Quality. Smoke Forecast Outlooks are available at https://outlooks.wildlandfiresmoke.net/outlook.

Cedar Creek Fire

October 10, 2022 Update 8:30 AM | Size: 122,210 acres | Contained: 38% | Start Date: August 1,2022 Origin: 15 miles east of Oakridge, OR
Cause: Lightning | Total personnel: 730Resources: 22 engines; 16 crews; 3 heavy equipment; 8 helicopters

Weather: A weakening cold front will move through this afternoon, resulting in much cooler temperatures and increased northwest winds. Cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity will linger into Tuesday as high pressure rebounds over the Pacific Northwest. Temperatures will be in the upper 60s and lower 70s today, with widespread smoke and haze persisting in the fire area.

Operations: Dry fuels and unseasonably warm temperatures contributed to fire growth in the “slopover” area actively burning along the southern fire edge near Lucas Lake yesterday. Firefighters used water bucket drops from heavy helicopters combined with retardant drops from air tankers again as dozers and Interagency Hotshot Crews worked to construct fireline around this area where fire crossed containment lines. Securing and holding this “slopover” area to prevent impacts to the Highway 58 corridor continues to be the highest priority for fire crews and resources. Additional heavy equipment is arriving today to help with this work. Aerial resources combined with dozers, fire engines, and several Interagency Hotshot Crews will focus today on preventing the fire from spreading south into the Highway 58 corridor.  On the western fire edge, firefighters have begun work to clear and reopen the 24 Road. On the eastern portion of the fire near Charlton Lake, firefighters work to prepare the 4290 Road as a fire control line. Fire crews continue to patrol and work on suppression repair around other portions of the fire. These repairs include grading roads and removing hazard trees along interior road systems.

Firefighters on the Big Swamp and Potter Fires are nearing completion on the fire suppression repairs to both fires.

Closures: There are closures in effect on the Deschutes National Forest and Willamette National Forest. These closures will remain in place until areas impacted by the fire are surveyed for safety risks and fire crews are able to mitigate these hazards. Publication Type: News

Cedar Creek Fire

October 9, 2022 Update 8:30 AM | Size: 121,762 acres | Contained: 38% | Start Date: August 1,2022 Origin: 15 miles east of Oakridge, OR
Cause: Lightning | Total personnel: 627Resources: 21 engines; 14 crews; 3 heavy equipment; 8 helicopters

Weather: Weather conditions will be near critical conditions throughout the week. Today will be warm and dry, with temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s. Widespread smoke and haze will continue across most of the fire area.

Operations: Northwest Incident Management Team 12 took command of the fire at 8:00 PM last night. Extremely dry fuels and high temperatures led to increased fire behavior on the southern edge of the Cedar Creek Fire, enabling the fire to escape containment lines near Lucas Lake and close to the existing spot fire. Firefighters focused their efforts on this new “slopover” area where the fire crossed containment lines, estimated to be 30-50 acres yesterday. Heavy helicopters performed numerous water bucket drops on this new slopover fire and the existing spot fire, and very large air tankers (VLATs) dropped multiple loads of retardant to slow the fire spread. Helicopters and air tankers will be utilized again today as conditions permit to assist firefighters working on the ground around these areas of active fire. Additional resources and equipment, including multiple dozers, have been ordered and will continue arriving today as fire crews concentrate on keeping these two pockets of active fire north of the Highway 58 corridor.  On the eastern fire perimeter near Charlton Lake, firefighters constructed a network of fire hoses to deliver water to containment lines and used water bucket drops from heavy helicopters to cool and secure containment lines ahead of the increased winds forecasted next week. Firefighters are currently assessing and evaluating the safety risks associated with reopening the 24 Road. Fire crews continue to patrol around other portions of the fire, working to identify and extinguish any remaining areas of heat near containment lines. Fire suppression repair work is ongoing around most of the remaining fire perimeter.  Firefighters on the Big Swamp and Potter Fires are completing fire suppression repairs on both fires, returning roads and fire control lines to their pre-fire condition.

Closures: There are closures in effect on the Deschutes National Forest and Willamette National Forest. Cedar Creek Fire

October 7, 2022 Update 8:30 AM | Size: 121,249 acres | Contained: 38% | Start Date: August 1,2022 Origin: 15 miles east of Oakridge, OR
Cause: Lightning | Total personnel: 624Resources: 16 engines; 17 crews; 8 heavy equipment; 5 helicopters

Operations:
Yesterday, firefighters spent another day working patrol, mop up and repair across the entire Cedar Creek Fire. Road repairs remain a high priority to allow safe access for firefighters and resource advisors (READs) to enter interior regions. The east wind event on Wednesday night caused a spot fire in Division T near the southern tip of the fire, northwest of Lucas Lake. Air resources were utilized to slow spread and two hotshot crews worked on the spot fire throughout the day yesterday. Air operations as well as ground resources will continue working to contain the spot fire today. The wind event has contributed to increased fire activity in this area and other locations on the fire, producing more smoke as hot and dry weather persists across the fire area. Hauling debris continues in the east branch of the Cedar Creek Fire. Repairs on the Potter Fire are finishing up and focus will shift to clean up on the Big Swamp Fire.

Weather: Increased windspeeds and low humidity are predicted to occur Friday and Saturday. Smoke impacts will persist in the area throughout the morning hours and into the early afternoon. A shift in wind direction from east to northwest and a slight increase in windspeeds is expected this afternoon, along with increasing temperatures.

 Cedar Creek Fire

October 6, 2022 Update 8:30 AM | Size: 120,983 acres | Contained: 39% | Start Date: August 1,2022 Origin: 15 miles east of Oakridge, OR
Cause: Lightning | Total personnel: 646 Resources: 14 engines; 16 crews; 8 heavy equipment; 5 helicopters

Operations: With another east wind event today, operations have focused on securing control lines and protecting

surrounding communities. The incident command team will continue to build security across the Cedar

Creek Fire; however, emphasis will shift to suppression repair. Firefighters are working on grading, hauling

debris, cleaning ditches and culverts, identifying hazards and masticating along roadways throughout the

Cedar Creek Fire. Grading and repair along Forest Service 24 is almost complete and will serve an

important role for improved access for firefighters. Resource Advisors (READs) are working alongside

firefighters to help identify potential impacts and benefits of fire operations on natural and cultural

resources. Safety concerns continue to complicate suppression tactics as firefighters access areas where

active fire has spread, and trees have been compromised. Repair in the interior will make it possible to lift

closures and allow the public to return safely.

Weather: Increased windspeeds and low humidity are predicted to occur Wednesday night through

Thursday morning. Firefighters will continue to monitor the fireline during that east wind event. Higher

temperatures and lower humidity will contribute to an elevated risk in fire behavior but don’t present a

significant concern. Smoke impacts will persist in the area throughout the morning with easterly winds in

the morning and westerly winds in the afternoon.

Closures: The Deschutes National Forest and Willamette National Forest both have closures and fire

restrictions in effect. Some of these closures will remain in effect until areas that have been heavily

impacted by the fire are surveyed for safety hazards. Please respect Forest closures for firefighter and

public safety. Violations of these prohibitions are punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000.00 for an

individual or $10,000.00 for a corporation or imprisonment for not more than six months or both. 16 USC §

551 and 18 U.S.C §§ 3551, 3559, 3571, and 3581. Please visit Willamette National Forest and Deschutes

Cedar Creek Fire

October 5, 2022 Update 8:30 AM | Size: 120,926 acres | Contained: 36% | Start Date: August 1,2022 Origin: 15 miles east of Oakridge, OR
Cause: Lightning | Total personnel: 702 Resources: 12 engines; 17 crews; 10 heavy equipment; 5 helicopters

Pacific Northwest Incident Management Team 9 assumed command of the East Zone of Cedar Creek Fire at 8:00 PM yesterday, October 3. The team will coordinate management of the entire Cedar Creek Fire, as well as facilitate the remaining work to be done on Potter and Big Swamp Fires.

Operations: Although there have been no changes to closures in the fire area, road repairs and grading are underway in many areas of the Cedar Creek Fire including Forest Service Road 19 and 24 near the Westfir community and Highway 46 in the East Zone. Some firing operations occurred in Division W (the southwestern border of the fire) along Eagle Creek and a sprinkler system is in place for utilization along the train tracks.

Firefighters are moving materials, cleaning campgrounds, and identifying additional repair needs along highway 46. Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) have been used on many occasions on this fire and will continue to be utilized to fly over Fuji Mountain and other locations in the southeast region of the fire. The UAS provides an excellent alternative when smoke and weather create unsafe flying conditions for helicopters, reducing flying exposure for pilots and crewmembers. These aircraft have been able to help firefighters on the Cedar Creek Fire identify areas of heat through infrared technology where they can focus efforts.

Repair work with heavy equipment is ongoing on Potter and Big Swamp Fires.

Weather:
Increased windspeeds are predicted to occur Wednesday night through Thursday morning. Firefighters will continue to monitor the fireline during that wind event. Increasing temperatures and lower relative humidity will contribute to fire behavior. Smoke impacts will persist in the area throughout the morning with easterly winds in the morning and westerly winds in the afternoon.

Closures: The Deschutes National Forest and Willamette National Forest both have closures and fire restrictions in effect. Some of these closures will remain in effect until areas that have been heavily impacted by the fire are surveyed for safety hazards. Please respect Forest closures for firefighter and public safety. Violations of these prohibitions are punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000.00 for an individual or $10,000.00 for a corporation or imprisonment for not more than six months or both. 16 USC § 551 and 18 U.S.C §§ 3551, 3559, 3571, and 3581.
