West Zone Operations: Overnight, the ridgelines and higher elevations areas (above 4,000 ft) experienced lower humidity and vegetation is drying out after the recent rain. In these areas, fire behavior is picking up and additional smoke is visible. However, the firelines on the west zone are primarily in lower elevation drainages where the moisture levels are remaining higher and limiting fire spread. The fire is smoldering in places and there is scattered isolated burning in areas like Fisher Creek drainage.  Within the fire perimeter there are pockets smoke where downed logs that retained heat following the rain are being consumed. To the south and southwest of the fire, crews and mechanized equipment have completed fireline preparations such as cutting snags and thinning and chipping vegetation. If conditions, such as humidity and fuel moisture are at levels needed for successful burning operations, firefighters may initiate firing to reduce fuels between the main fire and the control line. 

Northwest Incident Management Team 9 led by Incident Commander Tyson Albrecht arrived yesterday for an inbriefing at the Middle Fork Ranger District and will be shadowing Pacific Northwest Incident Management Team 3 Sunday to provide for a smooth transition between teams. This will provide time for a thorough transfer of information before Northwest Team 9 takes command of the west zone of the fire on Monday morning.

East Zone Operations: The Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway/ Highway 46 will remain closed between Lava Lake and the Crescent Cutoff/ Road 61.  Crews have completed 50% of work on the shaded fuel break on the byway.  Shaded fuel breaks are performed in timbered areas where the trees on the break are thinned and pruned to reduce fire intensity yet retain enough shade to slow surface fire.  Operators are continuing to use equipment such as masticators, chippers, and dump trucks to complete this project.  To keep the public and our operators safe, please continue to observe the Forest Closure. Favorable weather conditions have helped firefighters shore up fire lines and fuel breaks.  Firefighters are retrieving equipment from areas where protection work has been completed, like the Odell Lake area, and organizational downsizing continues as resource objectives are met. 

Fire activity on the east zone is expected to be low with continued smoldering in needle litter and duff, with minor creeping possible in patches exposed to the sun and breeze.   

Weather: Through Tuesday the weather is expected to be warmer and drier with temperatures in the 70s and lower 80s. Winds are expected to be light and terrain driven with morning southeast to afternoon northwest patterns.

West Zone Operations: Fire activity within the perimeter of the Cedar Creek Fire is expected to increase with the warming and drying weather. Ridgetops within the fire area are expected to dry out quicker and, therefore have active fire sooner than lower elevations. Crews and mechanized equipment continue work on the north side of the fire to prepare Forest Service Road 19 as a containment line. Firefighters are actively searching for areas of heat and any remaining hazards such as snags along the western edge of the fire. The control line to the south and southwest of the fire is prepared with cleared vegetation and is ready for future burning operations.

During aerial reconnaissance flights, firefighters were able to look at some of the recreation sites and other special sites within the fire area. Many of these sites are in the interior of the fire and cannot be safely accessed on the ground due to hazards such as snags and downed trees. Taylor Burn Guard Station is in good condition and wrapped with fire-protective material. Much of the area around Blair Lake experience high severity fire with high tree mortality and trees with broken tops. The aerial view of Joe Goddard Grove shows primarily green forest with some smaller pockets where the tree canopy burned. Joe Goddard Grove and Constitution Grove were prepared with hoselays, pumps and sprinklers as a protective measure in case the fire reached those areas. Photographs of the sites that have been assessed are available on the incident Inciweb or Facebook pages. Waldo Lake Lookout survived the fire and fire crews unwrapped the building on Friday.

East Zone Operations: The Deschutes National Forest has slightly modified the fire closure that went into effect on September 9, 2022.  The new order opens access to Lava Lake from the north on Cascade Lakes Highway.  All fire equipment has been moved out of the area, and lake access is available through Lava Lake Resort, which will open this weekend.  Lava Lake Campground and Little Lava Lake Campground remain closed.  The Cascade Lakes Highway will remain closed between Lava Lake and the Crescent Cutoff/ Road 61.  When driving in areas adjacent to the road closures make sure to watch out for slow moving commercial trucks and fire traffic.

Crews have completed work on 24 miles of the 52-mile shaded fuel break on Highway 46.  Operational crews are making good progress on creating a defensible space along the scenic highway using equipment such as skidders, log trucks, masticators, chippers, and dump trucks.  Fuel break work continues to the west side of Cultus Mountain, tying together Little Cultus Lake to Cultus Lake.

Weather: Warmer and drier weather is forecasted for the weather bringing temperatures in the 70s. Overnight lows will be cold with some higher elevation valleys nearing freezing.

 Bend, Ore —  Beginning today, the Deschutes National Forest has reduced the forest closure for the Cedar Creek fire.  The reduction in the forest closure will allow recreation to occur at Lava Lake and Lava Lake Resort, which is in the northern portion of the closure.
 
Though the closure has been reduced, the campgrounds at Little Lava Lake and Lava Lake remain closed. Access to the resort is open.

West Zone Operations: The smoke and fog lifted in the morning, providing warmer and drier weather. Firefighters have been successful with mop up operations including extinguishing hot spots, breaking apart smoldering debris, and cutting snags and fire weakened trees along the western edge of the fire. This has secured the fireline along Forest Service Roads 2409 and 1928 which are northeast of the High Prairie community. Crews will continue patrolling this section of line to check for any hot spots. Along the north edge of the fire area, mechanized equipment and crews continue to prepare Forest Service Road 19 to be used as a control line. As they can safely reach them, resource advisors are working to assess the status of recreation and other treasured sites. Yesterday, personnel visited recreation sites along Forest Service Road 19, including campgrounds and trailheads. They confirmed that these sites are in good condition and wooden structures are covered in fire resistant material in case fire reaches the sites.
East Zone Operations: Crews working on the slop-over that crossed Forest Service Road 4290 are finishing their work. They will mop up the line 50 feet into the burned area seeking out and eliminating any hot spots. Dozer line repair is ongoing from Waldo Lake to the Forest Service Read 5897. The East Zone of the Cedar Creek fire has been assisting in backhaul of equipment across the fire area. Equipment will be backhauled to the cache in Redmond, OR where it will be inventoried, cleaned, and stored; ready to deploy on another fire. A strike team of engines will continue to patrol and monitor conditions in the Odell Lake area. Along the Cascade Lakes Highway, shaded fuel break construction continues in close coordination with a team of Resource Advisors (READs). READs are resource specialists who are familiar with the Deschutes National Forest ecology, and have a strong understanding of potential effects of wildland fires upon significant natural and cultural resources. As a section of shaded fuel break construction is finished, READs are brought in to assess the work and sign off on the completed line.   Forest closures are in place on both the Willamette and Deschutes National Forests for firefighter and public safety. A map of the current closure is available on the incident InciWeb page, Cedar Creek Fire Facebook page, and on the National Forests web pages. Following these closures allows firefighters to be able to focus on doing their work safely.
Weather: The scattered showers yesterday brough rain totals to nearly 0.4 inches across the west zone of the fire. Precipitation came to end quickly yesterday morning with a clearing sky. Warmer and drier conditions are expected Friday through early next week with temperature reaching the 70s during the day. Fuel moisture remains high with minimal fire behavior expected.

West Zone Operations: Over the past couple days, the scattered rain showers and high humidity levels moderated fire behavior. Crews are making progress on mop up operations by extinguishing hot spots and cutting snags and fire weakened trees along the western edge of the fire. Firefighters have prepared the control line southwest of the main fire. Although the fire has not made it to Constitution Grove, firefighters have been adding protection measures such as more pumps, sprinklers and hoselays to further protect the area in case fire pushes in that direction over the coming days or weeks.

Containment has often been used as a reference measure for firefighter progress and accomplishments. Conditions around the Cedar Creek fire area, such as steep terrain, snags, and rolling logs and debris present challenges for safely building effective containment lines directly on the fire’s edge. Fire managers took these conditions into account in evaluating what strategy would be most successful in protecting the communities of Oakridge, Westfir and High Prairie as well as the Highway 58 and Waldo Lake. Firefighters have successfully completed clearing vegetation along roads to use as firelines along much of the west zone of the fire. These firelines are not considered secure until there can be reasonable certainty that the fire will not cross them in the future. Before the wet weather, crews were successful in completing burning operations along much of the western and southern areas to bring the main fire to the control line under more favorable conditions. Fire officials make a determination about containment in the areas where burning operations have reached containment lines, mop up is completed and the fireline is secure.

East Zone Operations: Northwest Team 7 – Managed by Incident Commander Nate LeFevre, assumed command of the Cedar Creek East Zone Fire this morning. The primary objectives will be for the protection of community and recreational values while providing for firefighter and public safety by thoroughly assessing risk, implementing mitigations, and developing sound strategies and tactics. 

The east zone of the fire area received close to 1/3 inch of rain Wednesday. Fire behavior on the east side is expected to be minimal over the next five days. Moderated fire behavior provides an excellent opportunity to continue shaded fuel break construction around the east zone. 

Crews will begin repairing dozer line in between Waldo Lake and Forest Service Road 5897. Repair includes mitigating soil erosion and breaking up soil berms. The 5897 Road, and areas around Odell Lake will be in monitor and patrol status. Property protection measures including hose and sprinklers will remain in place, and engines will continue to patrol the area. Work continues along Forest Service Roads 4660 and 4668, building a shaded fuel break. The Cascade Lakes highway remains closed between the Crescent Cutoff and Mud Lake Road, just south of Elk Lake, for ongoing shaded fuel break construction. The shaded fuel break will protect values at risk from the Cedar Creek fire and serve as a mitigation tool in future fire years. The Deschutes National Forest has a temporary forest closure in place, to protect both firefighters and equipment working in the area, as well as protecting the public from hazards.  

Weather: Scattered rain continued across the fire area today ranging in accumulation from 0.10 to 0.25 inches. Rain is expected to continue through Thursday morning, then warmer and drier conditions are expected to begin Friday and continue through the weekend.

Closures: The Deschutes National Forest and Willamette National Forest both have closures in effect to protect the public and firefighters. West Zone Operations:  Conditions remained drizzly with scattered rain over the fire area on Tuesday. The weather prevented firing operations in the south and southwestern area of the fire. On the north side of the fire, key equipment arrived for specialized work to accomplish fireline preparations along Forest Service Road 19. Crews have been mopping up the western edge of the fireline by cutting dead and fire weakened trees and extinguishing hot spots. These efforts are ongoing. 

As conditions allow, firefighters are checking on various recreation and special sites within the burn area. Huckleberry Lookout and Taylor Burn Guard Station remain in place and are still wrapped with fire-resistant material. Some areas, such as the Joe Goddard Grove, are in the interior of the fire area and crews are not able to safely access them on the ground yet. Portions of Huckleberry Flats OHV Trail System were within the area burned to secure the containment line that is protecting the communities of Oakridge, Westfir and High Prairie. That area has a variety of burn effects.
The wet weather has slowed fire behavior this week; however, a warming and drying trend is expected by the weekend which could dry out vegetation. Safety of firefighters is a priority and the wreck Tuesday evening on Highway 58, while not related to the firefighting effort, serves as a good reminder to remain vigilant because there is increased traffic associated with the fire.  
 
East Zone Operations: The Alaska Team is transferring command of the East Zone to Northwest Team 7, at 0700 Thursday. “The team really appreciates the support of the community, and the partnership with Deschutes National Forest on this incident. We worked with Northwest Team 7 when they came up to help us in Alaska this summer, and we’re looking forward to a good transition,” said Alaska Team Incident Commander Norm McDonald. This transition takes place over several days, so incoming resources have adequate time to shadow outgoing personnel, gather information, and ask questions. The teams move through a methodical process to share details on current operations, hazards, and opportunities for success. Crews have finished putting in direct line around the fire that crossed over Forest Service Road 4290 and almost 2 ½ miles of road preparation was completed by the end of shift on Tuesday. Road preparation is complete along the Waldo Lake Road, Forest Service Road 5897, with a shaded fuel break 75 feet wide and 8 miles long. Crews have completed over 2 ½ miles of road preparation around Cultus and Little Cultus Lake and will continue their work in and around the lakes. The treatment prescription for the fuel breaks is developed in partnership with the Forest. The total indirect line identified is 60 miles with 18 miles completed, 21 miles in progress, and 35 miles proposed.
Weather: Light rain moved across the fire area but little accumulation was noted. Continued rain and a chance of isolated thunderstorms is forecasted.  The forecast calls for of ¼ to ½ inch rain over the East Zone through Thursday, continuing to moderate fire behavior. Showers and thunderstorms will become more widespread over the fire area into Wednesday with wetting rains expected for much of the area.
