CURRENT SITUATION
Firefighters were able to increase the percentage of containment to 38% completed, which is a 13% increase. Equipment work continues but due to terrain and thick vegetation, the process is slow. Firefighter and public safety remain the highest priority on the Midnight Fire.
PLANNED ACTIONS
Firefighters will utilize minimum impact suppression tactics to reduce impacts of fire management on infrastructure cultural and natural resources. A combination of crews and equipment will work a full suppression strategy to contain and confine the incident within the Silver Creek drainage. Work continues along the contingency line as the goal remains to maintain the fire within the footprint and produce the least possible impacts on resources.
WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR
Afternoon humidity and wind conditions are expected to be similar both today and tomorrow. There is a very low chance of a thunderstorm this afternoon however wetting rain is unlikely. Fire behavior is expected to remain the same, unless conditions align with fuels, heat, and wind in which case more single and group tree torching could occur.
Looking further out, models predict increasing thunderstorm activity and increasing humidity is expected Friday through Sunday. Relatively dry high pressure is set to return next week.

CLOSURES AND SPECIAL MESSAGES
Forest service roads are extremely dusty, and traffic creates heavy dust clouds. Utilize your headlights and fog lights if available and reduce your speed when driving on dirt roads. Throughout the day, large equipment will continue to enter roads, plan to drive slowly to stay safe. There are currently no closures in place, but firefighting traffic is expected to be heavy along FSR #244 (Lightning Creek Road) and FSR #284 (Elk City Wagon Road) between China Point and Lytle Cow Camp.

The Hayden Fire is a full suppression fire. The highest priority is for firefighter and public safety as firefighting resources work to minimize impacts to fisheries, sage grouse habitat, grazing allotments, livestock operations, Whitebark Pine, watersheds, cultural resources, private property, and infrastructure.
Weather: Low humidity continued yesterday and last night. Today will be mostly cloudy, warm and with temperatures topping out at 80-85 degrees. Light winds are expected on the ridges, and in the valleys will be largely terrain-driven. Precipitation will move into the area by early afternoon, though gusty, erratic winds and thunderstorms are possible. Light showers will continue off and on through the weekend. The moisture will result in fire behavior moderating.
Actions: Burnout operations are nearing completion on the north and south sides of the fire. As heavy fuels continue to cool, mop up operations are underway. Incident aviation resources, when winds, temperatures and visibility allow have delivered 383,850 gallons of water, 18,800 gallons of retardant, and 12,395 lbs. of cargo to the fire. Firefighters on the ground have completed 6.5 miles of handline and 19.3 miles of dozer line and have improved crew and equipment access to the fireline on 17.6 miles of roads.
Important Information: The Lemhi County Sheriff’s Department in coordination with the Salmon-Challis National Forest and Great Basin Team 7 have pre-identified evacuation zones. The York Fire is currently at 80,437 acres with 23% containment as of 8/1/23 8,288 acres are in Clark County, NV. Minimal fire behavior was noted during day shift today 8/1/23 due to heavy rain on the South end of the fire.
Monsoonal weather patterns have been observed bringing increased moisture and winds. These types of winds can cause the fire to spread more rapidly and unpredictably which can have an effect on fire spreading behavior causing the fire to advance. Currently the fire is backing down Crescent Peak away from the Nevada Border.
Firefighters experienced a heavy rain in the afternoon 8/1/23 which has moderated fire behavior. Firefighters tonight 8/1/23 will continue to build containment line and reinforce existing containment line while continuing to mop up and look for hot spots along the fires edge.
The joint efforts to suppress the York Fire by bring together resources from various agencies is a testament to the response during wildfire emergencies. The involvement of the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, San Bernardino County Fire Protection District, and Clark County Fire highlights the scale and severity of the fire and the need for extensive resources to tackle it effectively.

Current Situation: Fire activity was minimal today due to the rains of last night and this afternoon and high humidity throughout the day. The moist conditions allowed firefighters to further secure perimeters by mopping up smoldering sources of heat in proximity to the fireline and build additional direct fireline. As a result, containment increased to 38%.
While precipitation and humidity remain, fire activity will continue to be lessened allowing for work to progress and with less risk to firefighters. However, as temperatures begin to warm and fuels dry out, as is predicted beginning Thursday, fire activity will increase making smoke more pronounced. Additionally, these conditions will aid burnout operations and augment the work to date by removing additional unburned fuels capable of carrying fire adjacent to the fireline.
In Division A, firefighters worked directly on fire edges patrolling and mopping up especially, where the fire’s edge remains in heavy pockets of fuel with dead and down logs. The bulk of containment occurred on the east side in Division A and Z.
In Division Z firefighters continued to build and improve fireline. Emphasis was on the “finger” to take advantage of weather conditions and minimize further expansion.
Division Y firefighters were unable to access the remote sections on the western and northwesters edges due to very wet conditions and thunderstorm activity. Additional resources were added to increase fireline depth on top of the rim and expand fireline length toward the West Elk Wilderness boundary.
In Division W, along Middle Creek, fire managers continued preparations for a burnout operation planned to prevent perimeter movement beyond the creek to the north when conditions are drier.
Structure Protection operations were unchanged from the last few days and included conducting assessments and installing sprinkler systems as part of contingency planning.
Weather & Fuel Conditions:
Over the next 24 hours, little fire spread is anticipated outside of the current perimeter due to moist conditions and high humidity. Areas with dense mixed conifer fuels, ponderosa pine and spruce fir, and areas with heavy dead and down fuels will hold heat allowing for continued burning in the form of torching and short crown runs. Tomorrow and Thursday will have some lingering moisture, but precipitation chances will decrease markedly. Temperatures will begin warming and RH will fall as part of a warming drying trend which models predict to last for the next 1 to 2 weeks and possibly longer.
Evacuations, Closures, and Fire Restrictions:
Mandatory evacuations are in place in the Squirrel Creek and Mill Creek drainages. For specific evacuation information, see Gunnison County Emergency Management at www.gunnisoncounty.org. You may sign up to receive emergency alerts on your phones or other devices at: https://bit.ly/3QhZVZg .
