The Niarada and Mill Pocket fires are both 100% contained and have been turned over to the local unit to complete suppression repair.
The Niarada Fire started on July 30, 2023 as part of the widespread lightning storm that went through the area. It is approximately 12 miles west of Elmo, Montana. Local resources responded immediately and took suppression actions. Hot, dry conditions, erratic winds, and heavy fuels led to significant fire growth. Conditions moderated for a period with cooler, wetter, weather and firefighters were able to get significant work done before the weather got hot and dry again. Containment has increased substantially over the last two weeks. A Complex Incident Management team was ordered and managed the fire from August 2-16.
A CSKT Type 3 Incident Management Team, headed by Rob Berney, took command of the Niarada and Mill Pocket fires as of August 17. While leadership and command positions on the fire have changed, the crews, equipment and personnel on the ground remain largely unchanged and are in place to continue to build containment on both fires.
