Pioneer Fire Evacuation Level Update 08 22 2024

Related Incident:
Publication Type: Announcement

As of 6:00 pm today, August 22, 2024, Chelan County Emergency Management will reduce the evacuation levels for the Stehekin Valley from Adam’s Point to High Bridge to a Level 1 . This change in evacuation is in response to the reduction in fire threat from the Pioneer Fire. Keep in mind that although the fire hazard has reduced, the fire is not completely out. There are also other hazards that could present themselves in the area such as debris or slides. Any trail closures on National Parks or US Forest Service Lands may still be in place so be sure to take that into account. We will share trail closure information as we receive it as well.

August 22 2024 Daily Update 08 22 2024

Related Incident: Red Fire
Publication Type: News

Size: 737 acres
Start Date: July 17, 2024 Cause: Lightning Containment: 0% Total Personnel: 200 (Note: the 8/21 update had a typo of 118, 200 personnel is correct)

Crescent, OR – The Red Fire is burning within the Diamond Peak Wilderness of the Deschutes National Forest, on the southwest slope of Redtop Mountain. The fire continues being managed under a full suppression strategy. Public and firefighter safety is the highest priority in managing this fire.

Yesterday’s Activities – Crews continued progress constructing the shaded fuel break between Crescent Lake and Summit Lake. Processing of woody debris was completed on the shaded fuel break on the northwest side of Crescent Lake. Work on the fuel break between Crescent Lake and Summit Lake consisted of distributing the chipped material to allow regrowth and hauling of materials offsite.

Today’s Activities – Completion of work along the northwest side of Crescent Lake. Crews will move to the fuel break along Snake Lake Trail, between Crescent Lake and Summit Lake, improving by reducing the chipped material depth to enhance vegetation regrowth.

Weather and Smoke – We are still expecting wet, chilly weather across the fire area with light rain today through Sunday. https://fire.airnow.gov/. The team established a weather station at the airport for local weather, and rain gauges to evaluate rain impacts on fuel moisture and fire weather. White smoke from areas of heat along the fire perimeter yesterday indicated continued burning and availability of heavy fuels.

Closures – The Deschutes National Forest emergency closure around Crescent Lake and in Diamond Peak Wilderness is still in effect. The public should note that Forest Service Road 60 is closed, and road guards have been posted for public safety. More closure information is available at: https://www.fsa.gov/alerts/deschutes/alerts-notices/?aid=89091

Evacuations – The WILDFIRE! Level 1 – BE READY to Evacuate notice issued by Klamath County Emergency Management for Crescent Lake, Odell Lake, and Crescent Junction areas remains in effect (INCENDIO FORESTAL! Nivel 1 - ESTÉ PREPARADO para evacuar de las siguientes zonas: Crescent Lake, Odell Lake, Crescent Junction). Visit www.klamathcounty.org/300/emergency- management for more information or to sign up for alerts.

Fire Restrictions – Stage 2 Public Use Fire Restrictions – which prohibit open fires, including in developed campgrounds – remain in effect for the Deschutes National Forest. The Industrial Fire Precaution Level is currently Level IV “General Shutdown.” Visit fs.usda.gov/detail/deschutes/home/?cid=stelprdb5297376 for more information.

Drone Restrictions – Aerial firefighting is suspended when unauthorized drones (UAS) are in the area. Unauthorized drone use over a fire area poses serious risks to fire personnel and the effectiveness of wildfire suppression operations. If you fly, we can’t.

Six Mile and Stranger Cr II Update Aug 22 2024 08 22 2024

Related Incident: Stranger Creek IISix Mile
Publication Type: News

Six Mile and Stranger Creek II Fire Daily Update

August 22, 2024

Quick Facts: Six Mile

Size: 113 Acres          Start Date: August 18th, 2024  Cause: Lightning

Location: Two miles east of Nine Mile Hellgate Road, near the head of Cottonwood Creek

Containment: 40%              Personnel: 89             Fire Strategy: Full suppression

Resources Assigned: 3 hand crews, 2 engines, 2 water tenders, 2 heavy equipment

The Six Mile Fire was initiated by lightning and is located approximately 26 miles southwest of Inchelium and is burning in the Williams Flat fire footprint from 2019.  Rainfall Tuesday night/Wednesday morning greatly reduced fire behavior, allowing crews to increase containment of the fire line to 40%.  Removal of snags along the fire line is a primary operation of the fire.  Smoldering snags can fall over the fire line, allowing the fire to escape.  Snags also pose a major hazard to crews working in the area.  Experienced fallers have been evaluating the danger snags and falling them where appropriate to maintain safety, containment and mop-up operational goals.

Quick Facts: Stranger Creek II Fire

Size: 66 Acres           Start Date: August 18th, 2024  Cause: Lightning

Location: ¼ mile east/southeast of South Twin Lake

Containment: 50%              Personnel: 82             Fire Strategy: Full suppression

Resources Assigned: 3 hand crews, 4 engines, 4 water tenders, 1 heavy equipment

The Stranger Creek II Fire was initiated by lightning and is located approximately 7 miles southwest of Inchelium and 1 mile east of Twin Lakes. Crews have constructed a hose lay around the fire perimeter, allowing crews to make good progress along the fire line.  Crews are systematically working from the edge of the fire line inward, finding and extinguishing remaining hotspots and increasingly reducing the risk of the fire from escaping the line.  With the progress made by the end of shift last night (8/21), the evacuation levels were removed for the Twin Lakes Area.

Evacuations and Closures: Road Closures:  Inchelium Highway in front of Inchelium Community Center Evacuations:  All evacuation levels are dropped for the Twin Lakes Area. For more information on evacuations contact CCT EOC (509) 634-7350. Law enforcement is patrolling around Stranger Creek II and Six Mile Fires to ensure public and firefighter safety in this area.

Weather and Smoke:  Cloud cover will increase through the evening and overnight with a small chance for light showers early Thursday morning. Dry and breezy northeast winds are expected Thursday afternoon and evening.  Winds will shift back to the southwest and become breezy late Friday morning with more chances for showers arriving Friday and Saturday.  This will bring cooler temperatures and higher humidity values.

SR 20 North Cascades Highway reopens following mudslide clean up between Granite Creek and Easy Pass trailhead

WINTHROP –State Route 20/North Cascades Highway reopened at 12 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22 between Granite Creek and Easy Pass trailhead (milepost 148-157), where the highway had been closed since Aug. 4.

Fire crews continue to work in the area in response to the Easy Fire and a 35 mph advisory speed zone has been posted between milepost 150 and 154. There are no pull outs or passing through in this section and travelers should remain alert for fire and maintenance vehicles exiting and entering the roadway.

Beginning at 7 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 26, there will be flagger-controlled traffic with a pilot car between milepost 150 and 154 so maintenance crews can continue to clear basins and restore drainage. The road will remain open without pilot car during non-working hours.

SR 20 closed between milepost 148 and 157 due to fire on Aug. 4. A week later, a significant mud slide following a rainstorm on Aug. 11 covered several hundred feet of the highway near milepost 152. Crews have since removed approximately 7000 tons of material to clear the roadway.

Road closure information is posted in the WSDOT real-time travel center, @wsdot_east and @wsdot_north on X/Twitter and updates will be provided as available. Wildfire information can be found by visiting the Washington State Department of Natural Resources wildfire incident information webpage.

Update as of:                        August 22, 2024

Estimated size:                   403 acres

Containment:                        8%

Start Date/Time:             8/14/2024 at 5:00 PM

Area of Origin:                West of Brinnon, North of Duckabush Rd. on Mt. Jupiter

Cause:                              Undetermined

Structures Damaged:    None

Air Restrictions: The Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) remains in place over the fire which is in effect 24/7. Penalties for flying in a restricted air space can carry significant fines in excess of $30,000.  Please remember that if you fly, we can’t.

Evacuation Levels have changed!! The Duckabush Road Evacuation Level is now a Level 1 from the 1000 block and above.

Update: Line construction is advancing around the fire area, and some smaller sections of line have begun extensive mop-up operations. During the mop up phase, burning and smoldering material is removed hundreds of feet inside the control lines using hand-tools and water. Firefighters have successfully installed two miles of hose thus far and will begin installing seven additional miles today. These hose lays include hundreds of parts which are hauled in by hand to remote areas on the fire supplying much needed water for the mop up process. Hauling and building these hose lays can be a slow process but is critically important to the overall suppression of the fire and should increase fire containment over the next few days.

The Incident Management Team reminds the public to please stay out of the fire area while fire crews work, and to use caution on the roadways. The last few weeks have been very busy both for firefighters and residents. We appreciate the support, patience, and understanding in the community during this time.

Weather: The next several days will bring a higher chance of showers, with minimal accumulation across the fire area. Strong outflow winds continue to be a concern however, incident personnel are prepared to adjust tactics as needed.

Road Closures: Duckabush Road and Mt. Jupiter Road (2620 Road) remain closed except for residents on these roads.

Forest Closures:  Olympic National Forest has updated closures are located at www.fs.usda.gov and Olympic National Forest – Alert and Closures web page
