Publication Type: News

Northern Rockies Team 3, Incident Commander Mike Behrens

Location: Three miles west of Stevensville, Montana in Ravalli County

Start Date: 8/23/2024

Cause: Lightning

Size:   1,458 Acres

Completion/Containment:  0 percent

Resources assigned: 558 people

KEY MESSAGES

  • Heavy smoke production from burnout operations is likely to occur this afternoon.
  • An emergency closure is in place for portions of the Stevensville Ranger District.

Current Status

Several hotshot crews and the Uncrewed Aircraft System (drone) conducted extensive burnout operations Friday afternoon to secure the south and east perimeters of the Sharrott Creek Fire. Heavy helicopters supported the personnel on the ground with water drops, especially along the north edge. Firing will continue today as conditions allow, bringing black down to the established control lines above the Silverthorn drainage and on the east side of the fire. Firefighters will also hold and patrol control lines adjacent to areas with recent burnout. Structure assessments and protection actions for the residences nearest the eastern edge of the fire are complete. Further south, fire managers are improving secondary lines near the McCalla Creek drainage.

Additional resources will join the night shift in holding the eastern edge and patrolling the affected neighborhoods. They also have initial attack responsibilities.

There are temporary flight restrictions (TFR) over the fire area west of Highway 93 from Bass Creek to Big Creek.

Weather and Fire Behavior

The combinations of hot, dry and unstable conditions will lead to increased fire weather concerns. The weekend will have high temperatures about 10 degrees above average. Gentle upslope winds are expected at 3-6 mph. Fire behavior today will be limited to flanking, backing and isolated small group torching, especially as fire reaches patches of subalpine fir.

Se mantiene el cierre de la zona del incendio Microwave Tower Fire 08 29 2024

Related Incident: Microwave Tower Fire
Publication Type: Closures

Ratio Mountain Fire Update 08 31 2024

Related Incident: Ratio Mountain
Publication Type: News

Incident Commander:  Matt Racicot, Noah Criner (T)
Location:  15 miles north/northwest of Whitehall, MT
Start Date: 8/18/2024
Cause: Lightning
Size: 750 acres
Resources on Site:  4 crews; 1 engine
Total Personnel:  74

The Ratio Mountain Fire, located between Ratio Mountain and Whitetail Reservoir, is burning in an area that has recently experienced several large fires. Fire footprints (or previously burned areas) lie to the north (State Creek Fire of 2020), the south (McClusky Fire of 2019), and the west (Placer Fire of 2021) of the fire location.

The entire area, including the previous fire footprints and the area immediately surrounding the Ratio Mountain fire, contains a large concentration of standing dead trees (“snags”) that pose challenges to ensuring firefighter safety and in responding to potential medical emergencies, jeopardizing the well-being of firefighters and other responders.
Fire managers from the Forest, working in collaboration with local Jefferson County officials and cooperating agency representatives from the DNRC and BLM, have identified, mapped, and prioritized critical values at risk in the fire area. These inter-agency, values-based discussions are critical in fire management, informing the decision-making process.

CURRENT STATUS/PLANNED ACTIONS:
Crews successfully implemented strategic firing operations to connect the eastern section of line to the fire footprint from the State Creek Fire of 2020. Crews utilized Unmanned Aircraft System (“drone”) due to the steep, rocky slopes and numerous snags. Crews will mop-up hot spots along this section, holding the edge in place.

Additional firing operations may be planned in the next few days, working from the southern section of line and moving to the west. More smoke may be visible across the area over the next several days, as firing operations are conducted.

Crews completed similar strategic firing operations on the eastern side of the fire last week, igniting and burning the fuels along the Hay Canyon Road, working southerly along Pony Creek. The crews will continue to mop-up and secure this southern piece.

This fire suppression tactic is an effective method of reducing the available fuels ahead of an active fire edge, while reducing the potential for negative impacts to the identified and prioritized values.

WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR:
The fire area will experience a warming and drying trend, with temperatures 10-15 degrees above normal in the lower 80s through the weekend. Winds will be calm early, becoming east-southeast around 6 mph. Strong thermal belts could result in poor overnight relative humidity recoveries. Similar conditions will continue until next Tuesday, with a chance of light rain showers and isolated thunderstorms returning to the forecast.

CLOSURES AND RESTRICTIONS:
The Forest has issued an area closure around the fire area, north of Whitehall on the Butte Ranger District. An area closure often involves specific trail and road sections. The area closure information and maps can be found on the Forest website, under the Closures and Alerts tab. https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/bdnf/alerts-notices

This closure applies to the following National Forest System (NFS) lands, approximately 15 miles north of Whitehall.

All National Forest System lands within:
• T3N, R5W, SECTIONS 1, 2, 3
• T4N, R5W SECTION 35

Closures surrounding a fire area are necessary to protect the safety and welfare of the public and provide for safe firefighting efforts and access.

The Forest is in Stage 1 Fire Restrictions. Campfires are allowed only in a permanent metal fire grate/ring provided by the Forest Service in a designated, developed recreation site. Smoking is restricted to vehicles, in buildings, or in an area clear of flammable materials. Devices with an on/off switch that use LPG fuels are allowed in an area clear of flammable materials within 3 feet of the device.

Ruby Fire Update for August 31 2024 08 31 2024

Related Incident: Ruby Fire
Publication Type: News

Ruby Fire Quick Facts

Size: 959 acres                           Location: North Cascades National Park, Ruby Mountain, Diablo, Washington

Containment: 0%                      Cause: Lightning/Natural

Start Date: August 9, 2024        Total Personnel: 50

Fire Information:

Inciweb: https://inciweb.wildfire.gov/incident-information/wancp-ruby-fire Email: 2024.Ruby@firenet.gov

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/people/Ruby Fire/61563760546137

Phone: 1-360-208-8096

Current Status: Precipitation received over the fire earlier in the week helped hinder fire activity. However, a warming trend is expected to continue through the weekend, potentially impacting fire behavior. To mitigate potential fire danger, firefighters continue implementing plans to protect threatened infrastructure and other values at risk. An Infrared (IR) flight was conducted yesterday, which helped validate the fire perimeter, and provide fire managers a better idea of where hotspots are located. Fire managers will continue to assess and monitor fire activity by utilizing aircraft equipped with IR.

Planned Actions: Firefighters will continue to protect critical infrastructure, park campgrounds, trails, backcountry camps and other resources in preparation for possible fire growth. The Ruby Fire is a full suppression fire, and firefighters are utilizing strategies and tactics that provide the highest likelihood for success, while mitigating risks to firefighters and the public. The main objectives are protecting human life, minimizing damage to values at risk and limiting wildfire spread to the north and west.

Weather: High pressure will continue to bring warm and dry conditions over the incident site through the weekend. Light easterly flow will limit relative humidity (RH) recoveries at the site, with minimum RH values around 25-30%, which is nearing critical values. With the air mass drying out, there is the potential these values could even be lower locally, especially on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. As fuels dry throughout this period, we will continue to monitor for potential critical fire weather conditions throughout the weekend, especially dependent on how fuels dry.

Closures: There are multiple closures in place for public safety; Colonial Creek South Campground and boat launch, Thunder Arm south of Diablo Lake. For a full list of closures visit https://go.nps.gov/fireclosures

Smoke: Air quality is forecast to be GOOD on Saturday and Sunday. https://www.airnow.gov/

Burning Restrictions: Campfires, the ignition of wood, briquettes, or any fuel in fire pits, fire pans and barbeque grills, are banned in all portions of North Cascades National Park Service Complex: North Cascades National Park, Ross Lake National Recreation Area and Lake Chelan National Recreation Area.

Drone Restrictions: Drones can seriously impact the safety of firefighting efforts, and operating drones within North Cascades National Park is prohibited, except with prior written approval from the superintendent.

Cooperating Agencies & Tribes: National Park Service, Upper Skagit Indian Tribe, Seattle City Light, Whatcom County, Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, Washington State Dept. of Transportation.

Fish Creek Fire Update Saturday 08 31 2024

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Northern Rockies Team 1, Incident Commander Brent Olson

Location:  7 miles SW of Togwotee Pass

Start Date: Friday, August 16, 2024

Cause: Lightning

Size: 11,507 acres

Percent complete:  39%

Resources: 509 Total Personnel: 9 Hand Crews; 21 Engines; 1 Dozer; 12 Heavy Equipment; 5 Helicopters

KEY MESSAGES:

“Firing operations” is terminology used to describe the use of fire to burn wildland fuels between a control line and the fire’s flaming front. When successful, the main fire will slow or stop advancing since the fire’s fuel has been removed. This also reduces the opportunity for the fire to build momentum and energy to push in a specific direction. If conditions allow, firing operations will be used to clean up some pockets of unburned fuels on the east and northeast side of the fire over the next few days.

Completion has increased to 39 percent on the fire. Percent complete refers to the degree to which the confine/point protection strategic actions have been accomplished. Confine is a wildfire response strategy of restricting a wildfire to a defined area, primarily using natural barriers that are expected to restrict the spread of the wildfire under the prevailing and forecasted weather. Point protection tactics include the installation of pumps, sprinkler systems, vegetative fuels reduction, and other actions to protect values-at-risk.

CURRENT STATUS:

Yesterday, conditions were not favorable for firing operations so crews remained patient and will wait for better conditions which could occur today. Crews and equipment continued to work on the Deception Road shaded fuels break south of the Brooks Lake Lodge. The indirect hand lines along the Holmes Cave Trail and a segment of the Continental Divide Trail were completed including setting up pumps and hose lines. Crews and equipment continued to construct an indirect line along the Flagstaff Road using a combination of vegetation reduction and improvements along natural features. The indirect control line located from Highway 26 south to Pilot Knob and the Moccasin Basin Trailhead is ready in anticipation of future firing operations. Structure protection crews reviewed plans and tested equipment in the Brooks, Pinnacle and Breccia areas.

Indirect control line construction and preparation work will continue today on the Deception and Flagstaff Roads as part of the confine/point protection strategy being used to protect the identified values at risk. Under favorable fire weather conditions, firing operations may be used to clean up unburned islands to prevent fire from spotting across the 2007 Hardscrabble fire scar. Structure protection crews will start assessments and develop plans for values at risk in additional areas along the Highway 26 corridor.

WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR:

Another warm and dry day with temperatures reaching the low 70s and relative humidity dropping below 20 percent. Wind will generally be terrain driven through the afternoon. Then, expect a wind shift and increase to out of the east around 1900. Gusts of 15 to 20 mph will be possible through the overnight hours, especially along more exposed ridges. Sunday remains warm and dry with wind returning to out of the southwest.

Isolated areas of fire activity in timber with heavy fuels is anticipated today. Fuels conditions and weather exist for fire behavior with low to moderate rates of spread, torching and downwind spotting up to three tenths of a mile. The fire will likely have a hard time getting wind, slope and continuous fuels to align for any significant growth. Expect fire behavior to increase after the inversion lifts, around 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and peaking around 6:00 p.m. then moderating after dark.

AIR QUALITY AND SMOKE:

Air quality, smoke conditions and forecasts can be found at https://www.airnow.gov/.

CLOSURES AND EVACUATIONS:

A joint Closure Order for the fire area has been issued by the Bridger-Teton and Shoshone National Forests for public and firefighter safety. Please do not enter the closure area or use the Forest Roads that are closed.

The Fish Creek Area, Roads, and Trails Closure Order (map) has been established for public and firefighter safety in the fire area. Full details can also be found at https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/btnf/alerts-notices.

Fremont County: Brooks Lake, Pinnacle Drive and Breccia Drive area remain in the Level 2 Evacuation notice. A Level 2 Evacuation means “Be Set” to evacuate. You must prepare to leave at a moment’s notice. This level indicates there is significant danger to your area, and residents should either voluntarily relocate to a shelter or with family/friends outside of the affected area, or if choosing to remain, to be ready to evacuate at a moment's notice. See the alert notice on the Fremont County Fire Protection District Facebook page

Teton County: The Teton County Division of Emergency Management utilizes a Ready, Set, Go www.tetoncountywy.gov/1846/Ready-Set-GO system for evacuation messaging. All residents should be in the Ready status by preparing for evacuations and becoming fire adapted.

US HWY 26/287 continues to experience smoke and sometimes limited visibility. Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is working closely with Fremont County Emergency Management and fire officials for the safety of motorists and firefighters. Drivers are encouraged to visit https://www.wyoroad.info/ prior to traveling on US HWY 26/287 for road status and information, or download the Wyoming 511 app at https://www.wyoroad.info/511/WY511Mobile.html to monitor for any changes due to fire activity.

A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) has been established over the fire area. This allows for firefighting aircraft to safely work over the fire area. Federal, state, and local wildland fire management agencies and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) urge members of the public not to fly “Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS)” or drones over the Fish Creek Fire. Unauthorized drone flights pose serious risks to firefighter and public safety and the effectiveness of wildfire suppression operations. If you fly, WE CAN’T!

Weather | Anticipated Fire Behavior:

A high-pressure system parked over the fire area yesterday, bringing a stable air mass that trapped smoke at low altitude. Resulting fire behavior was moderate, with short, slope-driven runs, and single-tree and group torching. The high-pressure system remains over the fire area today, with expected high temperatures around 80 degrees, minimum relative humidity around 10%, and light, terrain-driven winds. Minimal winds will result in smoke settling over the area again today, shading the fires from sunshine and keeping fire behavior moderate.

  • Army crews from the 14th Brigade Engineer Battalion based at Joint Base Lewis McChord are currently assisting with suppression efforts on the West Mountain Fires as well as assisting with adjacent wildfires in the area.
  • Helicopters were unable to fly yesterday due to poor visibility in smoky atmospheric conditions.

Boulder Fire:

  • Fire crews constructed a segment of indirect hand line yesterday, tying the fire perimeter toward Blue Lake, as a contingency holding feature in case the fire becomes more active along the uncontained western edge.
  • Firefighters continue to mop up residual heat, secure containment lines, and chip brush, branches, and other unburned fuels, while they monitor areas of heat for increased fire behavior.

Dollar Fire:

  • Reduced acreage on the Dollar Fire reflects improved mapping.
  • A wildland fire module and military personnel completed firing operations along the western edge of the fire yesterday. They will keep working the Dollar Fire, securing line and mopping up heat that could threaten the containment line.

Snag Fire:

  • Along the north edge of the fire, crews are close to completing firing operations to remove available fuels south of Warm Lake Road, aiding in securing the power line and roadway. This is our highest priority over the next few days.
  • Another firing operation is needed south of the highway along the fire’s northeastern edge, possibly to be implemented today.
  • Yesterday’s firing operation along the southern perimeter were successful in bringing fire down to Forest Roads #406 and #409. Fire continues backing downslope and consuming surface fuels with low to moderate intensity, preserving the overhead canopy.
  • Firefighters and Army crews returned to the fire’s western flank for more mop up and securing of containment line.
  • A masticator moved into the Warm Lake area today to treat accumulated brush and other fuels near residences.
  • Crews will scout terrain to the north in order to identify where hand line might be constructed if needed.

Goat Fire:

  • There was minimal fire activity on the Goat Fire yesterday, as the fire was shaded from the sun by heavy smoke.
  • Crews continue making improvements to Forest Service Trail 099 so the trail may be used as a contingency holding feature in the case the fire moves in that direction.
