Yesterday: An early morning weather disturbance with gusty and erratic winds resulted in several small spot fires across the containment line southeast of the fire yesterday. Firefighters responded quickly, containing the spots and keeping them to ¼ acre in size, or smaller. Throughout the day crews successfully held the fire lines and gridded for spots along the southern and northwest edges of the fire. Gridding involves systematically searching for additional spot fires by traversing parallel routes outside the fire line. Crews in the Twenty-five Mile Creek area continued to break down and remove equipment, including the nine miles of hose lays that were installed for structure protection. This operation is progressing from north to south along the Lake Chelan corridor.   

Today: Firefighters will be hiking into the Devils Backbone area to work from remote camps where they will be better positioned for continued hand firing operations. When conditions allow, firing operations will commence from Stormy Mountain northwest towards Angle Peak. Firefighters will continue to patrol line where previous burn operations have taken place, holding and mopping up along containment lines where needed. While removal of hose and other equipment continues north of Hollywood Beach, breakdown and removal of structure protection systems further south will not begin until fire officials consider the southern containment lines more secure. Structure protection crews will continue to monitor the area around the residences in First and Granite Falls drainages. 

Weather and Fire Behavior: Cloud cover will increase as the day progresses and wind gusts along ridgetops could reach 20-22 miles per hour in the afternoon. The large downed fuels remain very dry and this, combined with stronger winds, may increase fire activity overall today. Smoke from the fire will remain visible from Chelan and surrounding areas. 

Evacuations: Level 1 (Be Ready): All properties along South Lakeshore Road (from just north of Lake Chelan State Park to the end of the roadway), First Creek Road and Granite Falls Road. Smoke

Smoke conditions today are expected to be Good to Moderate around the forecast area. The Chelan area closest to the fire may see degraded air quality in the morning until the inversion lifts. West southwesterly wind flow is predicted today which will push smoke to the east northeast of the fire. Smoke impacts can be influenced by firing operations as well as activity from other fires in the region.

Yesterday: The smoke columns and glow from the fire after dark were visible from Chelan, Manson and surrounding areas yesterday. These conditions resulted from additional hand and aerial firing operations along the southern containment line and toward Stormy Mountain. Completion of these sections of line are critical to the protection of homes in First Creek and keeping the fire from spreading toward the Entiat Valley. Favorable conditions during the operations helped firefighters achieve a good amount of depth to fortify the containment line.

Crews along the northwest side of the fire will mop up and secure line where burning operations took place previously. These crews will also scout and evaluate opportunities to conduct ground and aerial ignitions to reduce vegetation adjacent to the containment line on the west side of the fire. Due to increasing confidence in containment lines on the east side of the fire, structure protection crews in the Lake Chelan corridor may be breaking down and removing equipment in the Twenty-five Mile Creek area. They will work from north to south along the corridor to the First Creek area over the next couple of days.

Weather and Fire Behavior: A weak weather disturbance passed over the area in the morning hours resulting in brief and erratic gusty winds. Firefighters this morning will be on the lookout for spot fires that may have ignited from embers associated with those winds. The forecast calls for full sunshine in the afternoon with gusts along ridgetops reaching 20-25 mph. As smoke and clouds clear firefighters anticipate favorable conditions for firing operations.
