Management of the Twentyfive Mile Fire transferred to Southwest Incident Command Team 3 at 6:00 am this morning.

Yesterday: Ahead of the anticipated weather pattern change, firefighters continued to strengthen the containment line west of the fire. Using both hand and aerial ignition, crews worked to complete firing along the southwest perimeter of the fire. Mop up continued in the Slide Peak area and elsewhere on the fire as crews continue checking for and extinguishing any hot spots. In areas where there has been no recent heat detected they continued to backhaul equipment so that it can be refurbished and made available for use where needed.

Today: Over the next few shifts resources will be working to secure lines and evaluate opportunities to conduct aerial ignitions to increase depth of the containment lines. Road crews will continue the progress on road repairs to ensure safe access for fire personnel. Aerial ignition may occur in the interior of the fire area to improve the depth of the containment lines and limit tree mortality from uphill fire progression.

Weather and Fire Behavior: A cold front is expected today that will bring a weather pattern change through this weekend. Temperatures will be in the 50s to mid-60s under a partly sunny sky. Thursday will have cloud cover with little to no precipitation and slightly cooler temperatures. There is a high chance for precipitation Friday into Saturday along with unseasonably cold temperatures and increased relative humidity.

Because of the weather diminished fire behavior is expected. There is potential for moderate fire behavior in unburned pockets of fuel. Heavy fuels will remain dry in the coming week and the fire will likely continue to burn though “islands” of green trees interior to the containment lines, producing visible smoke.

Mañana a las 7:00 a.m. el Equipo 3 de Gestión de Incidentes del Noroeste del Pacífico pasará la gestión del incendio de Twenty-five Mile al Equipo 3 del Suroeste.

Ayer: Los bomberos trabajaron al noroeste de Stormy Mountain en Devil’s Backbone realizando operaciones de quema terrestre y aérea para aumentar la profundidad de la línea de contención oeste del incendio. Cerca de East Point, en la cuenca de North Fork de Thirty-five Mile Creek, el incendio ardió de manera activa en los combustibles pesados. Condiciones meteorológicas y comportamiento del incendio: El clima soleado y seco de ayer alimentó el fuego en algunas partes interiores del incendio. Hoy, el clima será parecido, con posible actividad moderada del incendio en partes con combustibles no quemados. Desde mediados hasta el fin de semana se espera un cambio meteorológico que traerá temperaturas más frías y precipitaciones considerables a final de la semana que disminuirán la intensidad del incendio durante el fin de semana, aunque es posible que las condiciones cálidas y secas regresen a finales de mes.

Yesterday: Working northwest of Stormy Mountain along Devil’s Backbone, firefighters used aerial and hand ignition to further increase depth of the containment line west of the fire. Near East Point, in the North Fork of Thirty-five Mile Creek drainage, the fire burned actively in heavy fuels. This fire activity did not threaten containment lines but did produce smoke visible throughout the surrounding area. Heavy fuels will remain dry in the coming week and the fire will likely continue to burn though “islands” of green trees interior to the containment lines, producing visible smoke. Mop up continues in the Slide Peak area and elsewhere on the fire as crews continue checking for and extinguishing any hot spots. In areas where there has been no recent heat detected they continued to backhaul equipment so that it can be refurbished and made available for use where needed.

Today: Firefighters will continue working to bolster the containment line west of the fire ahead of a change in weather anticipated for later this week. While cooler, wetter, weather is expected for the weekend, there remains a need to ensure a secure containment line that will stop spread of the fire given the potential for warmer, drier, conditions to return in the coming weeks. Using both hand and aerial ignition, and as conditions allow, they will be working to complete remaining firing along the line southwest of the fire. Crews will also continue the progress made completing road repairs where needed to ensure safe access for fire personnel. 

Weather and Fire Behavior: Yesterday was mostly sunny with continued drying which allowed for active burning in some interior areas of the fire. Today will be similar, with potential for moderate fire behavior in unburned pockets of fuel. There will be a mid-week shift in the weather that will bring colder temperatures and significant precipitation by the end of the week. Cooler, wetter weather will slow fire behavior through the weekend although there remains the potential for a return to warmer drier conditions later in the month.

Ayer: las operaciones de quema se reanudaron con éxito la tarde del domingo gracias a que el sol y el aumento de los vientos, después de las lluvias recientes, secaron los combustibles. Los vientos favorables ayudaron a los bomberos a ganar hasta 300 pies de profundidad en la línea de contención en Devils Backbone, hacia Stormy Mountain. El fuego ardió de manera activa en sectores de vegetación sin quemar que se encontraban en el interior del perímetro de la cuenca de Twenty-five Mile Creek y el afluente al norte. Una pila de raíces ardió a primeras horas de la noche cerca del cortafuegos, e hizo falta cinco descargas de helicópteros para saturar por completo el fuego y garantizar que no se saliera de la línea e iniciara otros incendios. El extremo inactivo del este fue monitoreado, mientras que los bomberos trabajaron para desmantelar y retirar mangueras y equipos en las secciones norte y noroeste para regresar y reutilizarlos en otros incendios.

Hoy: continuarán los trabajos para conectar y reforzar el cortafuegos al norte de Devils Backbone hacia Angle Peak. Yesterday: With sunshine and increased winds drying out fuels following recent rainfall, burnout operations were successfully resumed Sunday afternoon. Favorable winds helped firefighters gain up to 300 feet of depth along the fire line on Devils Backbone toward Stormy Mountain. The fire burned actively in pockets of unburned vegetation that were well within the perimeter in the Twenty-five Mile Creek drainage and the tributary to the north. Early in the evening, a large root wad flared up near the fireline, requiring five helicopter bucket loads of water to fully saturate it and ensure it could not ignite spot fires by rolling outside the line. Monitoring continued on the inactive eastern edge, while firefighters worked to break-down and remove hoselays and equipment from the north and northwestern sections to return and refurbish it for use on other fires.

Today: Work will continue to connect and strengthen fireline northward along the Devils Backbone toward Angle Peak. Aerial ignitions will involve the use of a helicopter mounted plastic sphere dispenser (PSD)  that distributes spheres about the shape and size of ping pong balls. The plastic spheres contain potassium permanganate and are injected with ethylene glycol (antifreeze). A chemical reaction causes the sphere to ignite approximately 20 to 30 seconds after injection. Use of aerial ignition helps to limit firefighter exposure to risk in this steep and rocky area by reducing time needed to burn. As vegetation becomes more sparse along the northwest edge, firefighters continue to assess options to solidify the fire’s edge before fall weather patterns begin to limit options. Meanwhile, on the fire’s northwest and northern perimeter, firefighters continue work to mop up, chip, and remove hoses, pumps, and other equipment that is no longer needed to contain the fire in that area.

Weather and Fire Behavior: Lighter winds and sunshine, along with slightly lower relative humidity, is forecasted today. Winds are expected to slowly move fire along in alignment with area landscape features, with an easterly flow in the morning shifting to west/southwest in the early afternoon wind speeds of 5 to 10 ridgetops.

Evacuations: Level 1 (Be Ready): All properties along South Lakeshore Road (from just north of Lake Chelan State Park to the end of the roadway), First Creek Road and Granite Falls Road.
