Personal total: 570                                                                   Causa: Rayo

Special Statement

This is the FINAL smoke outlook to be issued for the Blue 2 fire.

Fire

There has been very little fire activity over the past few days. Repair activities are underway throughout the fire perimeter. Some large fuels may continue to smolder, but growth is not expected. For more detailed fire information see: Blue 2 Fire on Inciweb.

Smoke

Minimal smoke is being produced by the fire, so we can continue to enjoy the GOOD air quality for which South-Central New Mexico is accustomed. Transported smoke from other active fires in upwind states or Mexico, may create some hazy skies on occasion. Remember if you want to know what the current air quality is near you, go to AirNow's Fire and Smoke Map.

Operations: Yesterday, fire crews monitored the fire for spotting potential and new sources of heat due to the weather conditions. Mop up continued around the fire to increase containment along the perimeter. Structure protection crews were in the surrounding neighborhoods patrolling and maintaining structure protection equipment. Infrared drones detected minimal heat near the perimeter and interior of the fire. Today, pumps and sprinklers that have been in the neighborhoods will start to be cleared. Mopping up and monitoring the fire will continue through the upcoming days.

Weather: Yesterday was a near critical fire day with warm and windy conditionsThe winds contributed to reduced humidity and drying out the fine fuels. No significant fire activity was experienced despite the weather.

High temperatures and low humidity will continue throughout Wednesday.

Smoke: Barring any significant fire growth, we should only see periods of light smoke particularly around Bonito and Capitan. Today will be the last smoke outlook produced for the Blue 2 Fire. The interactive smoke map can still be found at fire.airnow.gov/

Closures: In the interest of public safety, camping and other recreation activities in the Bonito Lake Area are still restricted due to ongoing firefighting activities. The Forest Closure Order will continue to remain in effect for the White Mountain Wilderness Area.

June 2, 2024

Starting at 4:00 PM, June 2, 2024, crucial changes in evacuation levels will occur for the Blue 2 Fire. While the “Ready, Set, Go!” Evacuation Alerts are shifting, it remains of the utmost importance for citizens and visitors in these areas to stay informed about the ongoing fire situation and make the best decision for their safety. If you feel unsafe at any moment, you have the ability and power to self-evacuate.

After a coordinated effort between the Lincoln County Office of Emergency Services, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and the Southwest Incident Management Team 3:

The Village of Capitan, Enchanted Forest, and Alto communities are no longer in the “Ready” status.

The Cora Dutton, Ranchman’s Camp, Sun Valley, and Sierra Vista communities are now in a “Ready” status.

The Villa Madonna, Bonito Lake, Loma Grande, and Nogal Canyon communities are now in a “Set” status, and all “Go” Evacuation notices have been lifted. Firefighting equipment and personnel are still in these areas; please slow down and use caution.

In the interest of public safety, camping and other recreation activities in the Bonito Lake Area are still restricted due to ongoing firefighting activities. The United States Forest Closure Order will continue to remain in effect from the White Mountain Wilderness Area until August 23, 2024.

As a reminder, citizens and visitors should know the evacuation levels and follow the advice of emergency officials. If you are not already signed up for local emergency alerts, do so now! Text “LINCOLNNMALERTS” to 99411 for Lincoln County Alerts, and “ALERTRUIDOSO” to 38276 for Village of Ruidoso Alerts.

Once home, perform these safety checks:

  • Look for hot spots, smoldering areas, and vegetation on your property.
  • Inspect the roof and outer parts of your house for any sparks or embers.
  • Search the attic and all rooms for hidden sparks or embers.
  • Examine your home for fire damage. Ensure all appliances are off and the main circuit breakers are safe and turn on.
  • Check your water supply system, like wells or pump houses, to ensure they work.

As we know all too well here in Lincoln County, wildfires impact our watershed. With monsoon season on the horizon, the time to prepare for Flash Flooding and Debris Flows is now. Have an evacuation plan, restock your emergency kit, and stay weather- aware by following trusted forecasts like the National Weather Service Albuquerque Forecast Office, www.weather.gov/abq. Typically, standard insurance does not cover flooding, so individuals and businesses downstream of the Blue 2 Fire need to reassess their flood risk and visit www.floodsmart.gov.

In a proactive effort, Lincoln County OES will conduct sandbagging operations in the coming weeks to help the public prepare for monsoon season.

Re-entering your home after a wildfire can be an emotional experience filled with uncertainty. If you need someone to talk to, call the Disaster Distress Helpline at 800- 985-5990 to speak with a trained counselor.

Monitor Lincoln County Fire Service's and Blue 2 Fire Information's Facebook pages for additional updates, and visit www.tinyurl.com/Blue2Evacs for an interactive evacuation map.

Firefighters prepare for increased winds on the Indios Fire

Daily Update – Sunday, June 2, 2024

Acres: 11,505

Start Date: May 19, 2024

Location: 7 miles north of the village of Coyote, NM

Personnel: 679

Completion: 50%

Fuels: Timber

Highlights: Crews have successfully reached 50% completion of operational objectives on the Indios Fire. Yesterday, fire activity was generally quiet along the northwest, north, and southeast flanks of the fire. In the southwest portion of the fire area, southern winds contributed to an additional 376 acres of growth which briefly resulted in increased afternoon smoke. Fire managers completed another reconnaissance flight over the fire area yesterday afternoon and observed large areas of unburned fuel in the interior of the fire. Smoke in the surrounding communities to the northeast of the fire area was diminished yesterday.

Operations: Along the southwestern perimeter of the fire, control lines placed around the private property held overnight and throughout the day. Firefighters continued to strengthen these firelines by cutting and piling downed trees and extinguishing or removing any burning material near the control lines. Hoses, sprinklers, and water pumps were also installed around the private property to further strengthen these protections. After these lines were successfully reinforced, helicopters were used to conduct aerial ignitions further down slope from the private property. As afternoon temperatures increased, helicopters also assisted ground crews by dropping water buckets to reduce fire intensity as it spread across the landscape. Wind direction continues to drive the fire as it consumes vegetation inside the control lines, slowly burning through the interior of the fire perimeter. Today, crews will prepare for predicted winds by reinforcing primary and secondary firelines and remaining vigilant in their patrols to ensure fire does not cross established control lines.

Weather: Increased wind speeds and much drier air are expected to move over the fire area today. This will mark the start of several days of very dry conditions and breezy afternoons that could result in burn periods extending into the evening. The area is expected to experience an increased chance of thunderstorms later next week.

Smoke: Smoke continues to impact surrounding communities. Smoke monitors have been installed in Coyote, Gallina, Cañones, and at the Monastery of Christ in the Desert. Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory problems or heart disease are encouraged to take precautions. A smoke outlook report for the Indios Fire is available online at the links below. View an interactive smoke map at https://fire.airnow.gov/. Learn more about smoke impacts at https://www.env.nm.gov/air-quality/fire-smoke-links/

Closures: The Santa Fe National Forest has issued an emergency area closure for the Indios Fire. The full closure order (No. 03-12-05-23-22) and map are available on InciwebCamping and water will be available at the Coyote Ranger Station for Continental Divide Trail hikers impacted by this closure.

Safety: A temporary flight restriction (TFR) is in place over the area, which includes uncrewed aircraft systems or drones. More information on the dangers drones pose to wildland firefighting aircraft and personnel on the ground can be found at: https://uas.nifc.gov/
