Lightning Caused Fire Discovered on El Malpais National Monument Lands 06 17 2024

Related Incident: Encerrita Fire
Publication Type: News

Grants, NM —National Park Service staff discovered a lightning-caused fire burning on El Malpais National Monument lands on the afternoon of Saturday, June 15. The Encerrita Fire, reported by the Oso Lookout, is located approximately 15 miles south-southwest of Grants, NM.

As of Monday morning, there were approximately 60 firefighters working on the incident. The fire is burning in Ponderosa pine forest with a grass and timber litter understory with some medium logging slash from logging operations that were conducted pre-WWII.

On Monday, crews will begin establishing containment lines on the west, south and north sides of the fire to prevent fire spread onto neighboring jurisdictions; firefighters will be aided by the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) northeast and northwest of the fire as well as other natural features. The 369-acre East Encerrito prescribed fire, which was completed in April, is approximately 1.5 miles north of the fire; this fuels treatment is expected to be an effective fire break to the north due to the lack of fuel remaining in that area. Ground crews will be assisted by a helicopter beginning Monday.

The Encerrita fire is expected to be active over the coming days as temperatures will be in the upper 80s and low 90s, humidity will remain low, and winds will be breezy in the afternoons. Rain is forecasted over the area later in the week, which is expected to temper fire activity.

The Continental Divide Trail and Zuni-Acoma Trail are closed in El Malpais National Monument from Porter Ranch Rd off Hwy 53 to Hwy 117. The western Zuni-Acoma Trail parking lot is closed. Closures have been posted and the public is asked to avoid closed roads and trails. The west side of the CDT remains open from the Emergency Operations Center to Porter Ranch Road. The El Calderon Trail remains open.

Additional updates on the Encerrita fire will be available on Facebook @ElMalpaisNPS. Closure orders may be adjusted in the coming days based on fire activity; please contact the El Malpais Visitor Center at (505) 876-2783 or visit www.nps.gov/elma for additional information on closures in the monument.

Firefighters shift to suppression repair work on Antone Fire 06 17 2024

Related Incident: Antone Fire
Publication Type: News

SILVER CITY, NM, June 17, 2024 – Firefighters are working on suppression repair work, which involves a series of actions taken to mitigate impacts caused by firefighting activities. Firefighters completed chipping slash along the entire perimeter and will be mitigating fire-weakened trees along roads, fence lines, and trails. Additionally, road maintenance will continue on County Road 13. The Antone Fire is at 12,396 acres and 60 percent completed. There are 72 personnel supporting the incident.

Fire movement will depend on wind alignment with the terrain and the availability of unburned pockets of fuel. This may cause fluctuations in the amount of smoke visible in the immediate area. Weather is predicted to bring back dry conditions with no moisture, single-digit relative humidity, and light winds for the next couple of days.

The type 3 team continues to manage the fire using the confine and contain strategy, which involves the interchangeable usage of direct and indirect suppression and point protection tactics. This strategy is subject to change based on evolving conditions. The management objectives include fire fighter safety, protecting values at risk, reduce fuel loads, improve habitat and the continuation of restoration work in the Slaughter Mesa area. News releases will be provided every other day or if there are significant updates.

Closure Order No. 03-06-03-24-001 is in effect until rescinded. Review the closure order map, marked Exhibit A. Both documents can be found on the Gila National Forest Alerts and Closures webpage at https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/gila/alerts-notices

Smoke may be seen from US Highway 60, NM Highway 12, the Community of Quemado, Quemado Lake Estates, Pie Town, Datil, Horse Springs, Apache Creek, and Reserve. Pioneer Fire Update for Monday, June 17, 2024

CHELAN, Wash. — The Pioneer Fire is burning in the Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness Area in the Chelan Ranger District of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest and on private land.

The fire footprint extends from Meadow Creek to Prince Creek. Northerly progression is being slowed by winds out of the northwest and green vegetation.

Suppression management has been divided into two branches: Branch I is overseeing operations and planning up lake from Point No Point on Lake Chelan to Flick Creek. Branch II is managing operations and planning down lake.

Branch I, up lake: With aviation support slowing the fire’s spread on both flanks, ground crews will continue with structure protection from Prince Creek to Canoe Creek to the south and Rex Creek and Hunts Bluff to the north.

A hotshot crew will be inserted today to scout potential line locations between Flick Creek and Moore Mountain. Fire personnel will also be scouting and develop long term strategic actions to address future progression.

Branch 2, down lake: Grading and brushing of Upper Grade Creek Road (8200 Road) has progressed to the area between Mitchell Creek and Gold Creek. A dozer, two skidgens, 3 masticators, and hand crews will begin line construction along Coyote Ridge down to the Lake Chelan shoreline.

A public meeting will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, at the North Cascades National Park Golden West Visitor Center in Stehekin, Wash. This meeting will not have a virtual option.

Smoke & Air Quality: Yesterday, terrain aligned northwest winds transported smoke to the southern end of the lake Chelan and air quality moved well into the MODERATE range throughout the evening hours in Chelan and Manson. Most smoke stayed on the western side of Sawtooth Ridge and the Methow Valley was largely unaffected. Check current air quality conditions at https://bit.ly/PioneerFireSmoke. Learn more about health impacts and becoming Smoke Ready at smokeready.org.

Closures: A public safety closure order is in effect for the Lakeshore Trail from Prince Creek up lake to the trailhead at Stehekin and portions of the Chelan Sawtooth Wilderness. Moore Point campground and the entire LakeshoreTrail are now closed. The closure includes Prince Creek, Cascade Creek, and Moore Point boat-in campgrounds. An interactive map of the closure area can be found at https://arcg.is/0Wbivn. A road closure of the Grade Creek (8200) road is pending due to heavy equipment operations.

Publication Type: News

Interlaken Fire Update

Type 3 Incident Management Team,

John Markalunas, Incident Commander

Size: 731 acres

Containment: 86%

Total Personnel: 246

Current Situation: Yesterday, Interlaken fire increased in containment to 86%. The increase in acreage was a combination of more accurate mapping from the most recent infra-red detection flight and the fire burning near Twin Lakes shore. The fire was active on the north end of the fire (DIV A), where fire backed downhill 500 feet in some areas from the Colorado Trail towards the lake shore. This area of the fire remains uncontained. There was some additional interior fire activity on the northeast end of fire (DIV A/D) where the fire burned up to the 2018 Flume Creek prescribed burn area and stopped. On the south end (DIV D) firefighters made great progress securing the fire edge by extinguishing heat, and there were no hot spots detected outside of the fire perimeter. Helicopters assisted firefighters with water bucket drops on the southwest corner of the fire (DIV D) to cool down interior pockets of heat to prevent spotting outside the fire perimeter. Due to the warmer temperatures and winds, a pocket of unburned fuel burned near the historical structures. The fire module working the division was able to cool the fire and secure the area. Firefighters on west end of the fire (DIV Z) utilized water pumps and hose lays and made good progress to secure.

Today, firefighters will continue to improve the depth of containment lines by using hose lays to extinguish heat near the fire perimeter. Firefighters on the north end (DIV A) are protecting the trails to limit impact and preserve the trees as the fire backs down to the lake shoreline. Crews will continue to search for possible remaining smoldering heat outside of the perimeter. Firefighters continue chainsaw operations to remove hazard trees along trails and the 399-road system within the burn area to make the area safe for future recreational use. Helicopters continue to be available to assist firefighters.

Smoke: Inversion smoke may impact the Twin Lakes and Hwy 82 corridor during morning and evening hours. Smoke should lift by mid-morning continuing to be light to moderate concentrations during the day. https://www.colorado.gov/airquality/colo_smoke.aspx) Visit https://www.airnow.gov/wildfires/ for resources on smoke.

Weather: Red flag warning and fire weather watch in effect today until 8 PM for hot, dry, windy conditions. Sunny today, max temps 72F with humidity 7-12%. Winds will pick up again in the afternoon 16-20 mph from the southwest.

Closures: Be aware that several trail, lot, and road closures are in place. As of 6-14-24, there is an official order from the Forest Service.
