Grizzly Creek Fire

August 23, 2020 Update

Yesterday’s Activity: Saturday was a moderate day of fire activity on the Grizzly Creek Fire. Crews completed containment on the eastern flank from Coffee Pot to Bair Ranch to I-70. A few pockets of heavy fuels are still burning in the Spruce Ridge area further south on the eastern flank. Crews continued to make progress and conducted patrols and mop up along the southern perimeter.   In some areas, fire was held up in aspen and sage due to the differences in how fuels burn and is smoldering. To the west, firefighters established direct line in steeper portions of Bear Creek and reinforced established containment lines. To the north, crews established road infrastructure to provide access for firefighting. They also finished indirect line along the Transfer Trail.

Today’s Activity: With more hot and dry weather in store for today, firefighters can expect active fire behavior. Burnout operations will continue near Spruce Ridge and to the south of Bair Ranch. Since the potential for fire growth remains, crews will monitor hot spots from the air and ground. Crews are conducting mop up and patrol along contained fire line to minimize the risk of escape. To the north of the fire perimeter, crews will work on the road system to respond as fire progresses out of Grizzly and No Name Creeks.  Mapping near Adventure Park will help crews evaluate reopening that area.  A Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team has begun an initial assessment of the fire’s impact on soils and vegetation and will address long-term restoration to the fire area. The team will assess the severity for debris flow in steep areas to I-70 and will assess water quality concerns for Glenwood Springs.

Road Closures:

I-70 continues to be closed between Glenwood Springs (MP 116) and Gypsum (MP 140), with no estimated time for reopening. Forest Service Road 400, Eagle-Thomasville Road, is closed due to excessive traffic and accidents resulting from drivers attempting to use this primarily dirt road as an alternate to the I-70 closure. Coffee Pot Road, and Transfer Trail roads and areas of the Flattops accessed by those roads are also closed, as well as many surrounding White River National Forest and BLM roads. Incendio Grizzly Creek

Actividad de ayer:   En el noreste, las cuadrillas contuvieron el fuego en el corredor de la I-70 y el drenaje de No Name.  También se logró la contención desde Coffee Pot Road hasta la I-70.  Esto se muestra en los mapas como una línea negra que indica la contención en el perímetro del incendio.  Ayer hubo mínimo crecimiento del fuego en los drenajes de No Name y Grizzly Creek. Hacia el este, las cuadrillas construyeron una línea alrededor de estructuras de Bair Ranch y llevaron a cabo operaciones de quema controlada hasta Ike Ridge. Hacia el oeste, desde la zona de Lookout Park bajando hasta la I-70, los helicópteros continuaron arrojando sustancia retardante desde la planta móvil montada en la carretera. Grizzly Creek Fire

August 22, 2020 Update

Yesterday’s Activity: Crews contained the fire to the northwest at the I-70 corridor and No Name drainage. Containment was also achieved from Coffee Pot Road to I-70.  This is depicted on fire maps as a black line, which indicates containment at the fire perimeter. There was minimal fire growth in No Name and Grizzly Creek drainages yesterday. Crews built a line around Bair Ranch structures to the east and conducted burnout operations up to Ike Ridge. To the west, from the Lookout Park area back down to I-70, helicopters continued to drop retardant over the area from the mobile retardant plant staged on the highway. Crews and heavy equipment were used in moderate and accessible terrain. Initial Attack and Structure Protection resources remained available if needed in either direction of the fire.

Today’s Activity: Expect to see moderate to active fire behavior today as the weather remains hot and dry with light winds. On the east side of the fire, more burnout operations are planned to remove fuel between the main fire and containment lines and to secure the line from I-70 to the top of Spruce Ridge. Interior islands of aspen stands and sagebrush continue to smolder in the fire area. On the west side of the fire, crews plan to work in steeper sections of Bear Creek and in the Lookout Mountain Park area.

Incendio Grizzly Creek

*Actividad de ayer:  Los bomberos continuaron con la construcción de líneas de fuego directas e indirectas, y fortalecieron la línea de contención existente alrededor del incendio. Tormentas eléctricas trajeron lluvia en el lado este (oriental) del incendio en la zona de Bair Ranch, disminuyendo el avance del fuego.  Sin embargo, persistieron condiciones cálidas, secas y ventosas al oeste de I-70 donde el fuego continuó más activo. 

En el lado noroeste del incendio, los equipos prácticamente terminaron la línea establecida a lo largo de Transfer Trail hasta Windy Point.  A medida que el fuego continuaba ascendiendo hacia las partes altas de los drenajes, hacia el noreste, los encargados del incendio trabajaron sobre un plan para establecer contención en la planicie alta una vez que el fuego llegue al borde norte del cañón.  En el lado este (oriental) del incendio, los equipos mantuvieron una   línea directa e indirecta desde la I-70 en ambos sentidos para detener el desborde del fuego hacia el este.  Se continuó con la protección de estructuras en Bair Ranch, al sur de la I-70 y los equipos llevaron a cabo pequeñas operaciones de quema. Moviéndose al sur hacia la zona de Flattop, los bomberos utilizaron equipos contra incendios y descargas de agua desde helicópteros para ayudar a suprimir del fuego. 

Como consecuencia de las condiciones cálidas y secas de ayer,  se reavivó el incendio inicial de ataque de Red Canyon, que comenzó el 19 de agosto en el condado de Garfield.  Recursos del incendio de Grizzly Creek colaboraron con los recursos locales hacia la noche de ayer y continuarán monitoreando el fuego.

Grizzly Creek Fire

August 21, 2020 Update

Yesterday’s Activity:  Yesterday, Firefighters continued building direct and indirect fire line and strengthened existing containment lines around the fire. Thunderstorms brought rain to the east side of the fire in the Bair Ranch area which slowed fire progression. However, hot, dry and windy conditions persisted west of I-70 where the fire remained more active.  

 

On the northwest side of the fire, crews neared completion of the fire line that was established along Transfer Trail to Windy Point. As fire continued to climb to the tops of drainages, to the northeast, fire managers worked on a plan to establish containment on the plateau once fire reaches the canyon’s north rim. On the east side of the fire, crews held direct and indirect line from I-70 going north and south to halt easterly spread of the fire. Structure protection continued in Bair Ranch, to the south of I-70 and crews conducted small burning operations. Moving to the Flattop area to the south, firefighters utilized engines and helicopter water drops to aid in fire suppression.

 

Yesterday, the Red Canyon initial attack fire that started 8/19, in Garfield County, flared up due to hot and dry conditions.  Resources from the Grizzly Creek fire assisted local resources and into last night and will continue to monitor the fire.

 

Today’s Activity:  A return to hot and dry weather will increase fire activity. The west side of the fire remains hot and dry and can expect active fire behavior. On the east side of the fire increased fire activity is also expected as vegetation begins to dry out. Areas within the fire perimeter are burning at varying intensities, based on terrain, topography and vegetation. Crews continue to work in remote areas and have established temporary spike camps to cover large sections of the fire safely and efficiently.

Incendio Grizzly Creek

Actividad de ayer:  La erupción ayer de un nuevo incendio enRed Canyon forzó la evacuación de residentes de la zona sudeste del condado de Garfield.  El ataque inicial movilizó recursos aéreos y terrestres, y el fuego se contuvo aproximadamente en unos 60 acres.  Todas las evacuaciones del incendio de Red Canyon finalizaron el miércoles al atardecer.  Además, los residentes de Buck Point afectados por el incendio de Grizzly Creek pasaron de estar en estado de evacuación a estado de pre-evacuación.  En cuanto al clima en la zona del incendio, ayer se produjo algo de precipitación con relámpagos.   

El incendio de Grizzly Creek en la zona del arroyo No Name continuó moviéndose en la parte alta del drenaje, y también se mantuvo activo a lo largo del borde oriental de Grizzly Creek.  La línea de fuego a lo largo de Transfer Trail hasta Windy Point casi se terminó por completo.  Se llevó equipo mecanizado adicional al lado noroeste del incendio para reforzar los esfuerzos que allí se están realizando.  El fuego está comenzando a llegar a las partes más altas de los drenajes del noreste, donde puede ser atacado activamente.  Se contuvo la actividad del fuego desde Coffee Pot hasta la I-70. Grizzly Creek Fire

Yesterday’s Activity:  Yesterday, a new start, the Red Canyon Fire, erupted in Garfield county triggering evacuations for residents in the south east portion of the county.  Initial attack by air and ground resources was mobilized, and the fire was held to approximately 60 acres.  All evacuations were lifted for the Red Canyon fire Wednesday evening. Additionally, Buck Point residents effected by the Grizzly Fire were downgraded from evacuation to pre-evacuation status. Yesterday, the weather over the fire had some precipitation with lightning.

On the Grizzly Creek Fire in No Name Creek was still moving at the top of the drainage, and also active along the east edge of Grizzly Creek. Fire line along Transfer Trail to Windy Point neared completion. On the north west side of the fire, additional mechanized equipment was brought in to bolster efforts there. Fire is beginning to reach the tops of the drainages to the north east, where it can be actively engaged. Fire activity from Coffee Pot to I-70 was held in place. In Bair Creek, the fire was active from Ike ridge to Upper Spruce Creek ridge. On the south side, the fire continued to progress through unburned fuels, filling in pockets. Near Lookout Mountain there was minimal fire progression. Lookout Mountain Park is still being evaluated for contingency lines.

Today’s Activity:  Today, the chance of precipitation and lightning increases with concerns for potential debris flow in Glenwood Canyon. Firefighters will continue with building direct and indirect fire line around the fire perimeter. The structure protection unit will continue work in No Name and Bair Ranch.  Crews will also be finishing up work at the 60 acres Red Canyon fire today.

Road Closures:

I-70 continues to be closed between Glenwood Springs (MP 116) and Gypsum (MP 133), with no estimated time for reopening. Forest Service Road 400, Eagle-Thomasville Road, is closed due to excessive traffic and accidents resulting from drivers attempting to use this primarily dirt road as an alternate to the I-70 closure. Cottonwood Pass Road in Garfield and Eagle counties. Coffee Pot Road, and Transfer Trail roads and areas of the Flattops accessed by those roads are also closed, as well as many surrounding White River National Forest and BLM roads. Area Closures: BLM recreation sites and boat ramps on the southern portion of the Colorado River Road (RD 301) near Dotsero, Colorado. Specifically, Cottonwood Landing boat ramp, Lyons campground and boat ramp, and Dotsero boat ramp.
