 Incendio Grizzly Creek

Grizzly Creek Fire

August 25, 2020 Update

* A Facebook Live Community Meeting for the Grizzly Creek Fire is planned for this evening, August 25th, from 6pm – 7pm.

Yesterday’s Activity: Successful firing operations occurred on Spruce Ridge yesterday.  There was some lightning reported Monday afternoon, as well as strong outflow winds causing fire activity to pick up in several areas within the perimeter of the fire. Containment of the fire has increased to 44 percent.

CDOT reopened the I-70 corridor for through traffic from Gypsum to Glenwood Springs, urging drivers to use extreme caution while driving in this corridor as fire crews are still using the road to access the fire. The interstate is open to through traffic only, and there will likely be periodic closures due to mudslides and other events. No stopping is allowed, and rest areas are closed. Reduced speed limits are also in place. A flare up at mile marker 126.5 yesterday evening, temporarily closed the highway, while helicopter’s utilized buckets to drop water.

Today’s Activity:  There will very likely be increased fire activity today, as interior fuels flare up as a result of low fuels moisture, higher temperatures, and expected outflow winds. Additional cloud cover is expected today and there is an increased chance for thunderstorms and lightning this afternoon and tonight. Motorists through Glenwood Canyon may see smoke and flames within the perimeter and should not call 911.

This is the last day for Great Basin’s Team 1, Type 1 Incident Management Team, who will end their 14-day tour tonight.  The Alaska Type 1 IMT will spend today shadowing the GB T1 and will be assuming command of the incident.

Incendio Grizzly Creek

Grizzly Creek Fire

August 24, 2020 Update

Yesterday’s Activity: Fire behavior increased yesterday due to hot and dry weather conditions over the fire area. Unburned islands continued to burn and smolder. Fire did make a push onto the plateau on the northwest side of the fire and air resources dropped retardant. Fire was active in the morning in near Bair Ranch and crews conducted burnout operations to secure containment.  Engines, heavy equipment, air resources and fire crews were utilized to achieve containment objectives on the west, south and east flanks of the fire. Existing control lines around the fire perimeter continued to hold. Firefighters began mop up operations in some portions of the fire.

Today’s Activity: Increased fire behavior is expected again today.  Burnout operations are planned today in the Bair Ranch area and to the south. In addition to mop up operations, the BAER team will continue their assessment of the fire’s impact on natural resources. This assessment usually begins before a fire is contained and involves a series of immediate post-fire actions to be taken to repair damages, minimize soil erosion and mitigate impacts from fire suppression activities.

This morning at 6:00am CDOT reopened the I-70 corridor for through traffic from Gypsum to Glenwood Springs. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution while driving in this corridor because fire crews are still using the road to access the fire.

CDOT reopens EBWB I70

Related Incident:
Publication Type: Announcement

EB/WB I-70 open in Glenwood Canyon following firefighting activity.TRUCKERS- Dotsero truck parking remains closed.
https://www.codot.gov/

CDOT asks that motorists prepare for reduced speeds, no stopping in the canyon and closures due to mudslides and other events. CDOT also urges travelers to stay focused on the road and avoid distracted driving. The I-70 closure began Monday, Aug. 10, when the Grizzly Creek Fire started burning along the interstate. The closure was located between Glenwood Springs (Mile Point 116) and Gypsum (MP 140). Wildfires in other parts of Colorado continue to affect Colorado Highways 14 and 139.

The Colorado Department of Transportation opened 1-70 in Glenwood Canyon on Monday morning. Travelers will encounter a lower speed limit and should anticipate more safety closures after rains or other weather. Motorists should also plan for not being able to stop at rest areas in the canyon, due to rockfall and other hazards.

While on I-70 in Glenwood Canyon, it is critical for motorists to pay attention to the roadway, and follow signage and traffic guidance through the canyon. A head-to-head detour is in place between Hanging Lake Tunnel (Mile Point MP 125) and near No Name Tunnel (MP 117.6). This detour is on the eastbound deck, and is similar to the construction detour in place this summer during the Glenwood Canyon Phase 7 project. CDOT asks motorists to plan for additional travel time due to lower speed limits in the detour and elsewhere in the canyon.

Travelers should prepare for intermittent closures on I-70 in Glenwood Canyon that are required for repairs after the Grizzly Creek Fire or if conditions in the canyon require a safety closure. Repairs include the replacement of power poles by aerial operations, which require closing the interstate. The roadway and structures along the eastbound deck have been reviewed and are safe to travel on.

Travelers are urged to pay close attention to weather forecasts. Although CDOT has carefully reviewed the hazards affecting I-70 in Glenwood Canyon, the roadway is a changing environment. Even minimal amounts of rain could trigger mudslides, debris flows or rock slides in the burn area. Showers and thunderstorms are forecast for Glenwood Canyon this week and could prompt a safety closure. Motorists are asked to watch the forecast closely through the weekend. CDOT has a plan in place for needed emergency closures due to rockfall, mudslides or other impacts from burn scars on the canyon walls. We have stationed personnel in the canyon to allow quick response to any events that could impact the roads. Those personnel have the equipment necessary to restrict traffic so that CDOT can safely clear the road and assess damage before reopening. CDOT is also working on plans to bolster long-term resiliency to sediment fall and avalanche.

Travelers will not be able to stop in Glenwood Canyon while traveling on I-70. Rest areas in the canyon will be closed and motorists will not be able to use exit ramps. I-70 is too narrow to allow stopped vehicles along the roadway and Colorado State Patrol troopers will assist in watching for motorists who attempt to stop. The Glenwood Canyon bike path is also closed at this time. Rafting, kayaking and other river recreation activities are not allowed on the Colorado River in Glenwood Canyon at this time.

CDOT will continue to monitor conditions in the canyon and will restrict traffic when necessary to maintain safety for the traveling public.
