P515 and Lionshead Fire Updates Aug 25 2020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

This update is for the P-515 Fire and Lionshead Fire burning on the Warm Springs Reservation. Both fires are being managed for full suppression.

Current Situation: Yesterday, firefighters on the P-515 Fire improved the fire line by extinguishing and removing burning material along the line, felling snags, and moving logs to reduce their potential to roll downhill (mop up). Crews continue to secure and strengthen fire lines on the north, south, and west ends of the fire. On the east flank, firefighters secured the last mile of line overnight by eliminating unburnt fuels between the fire’s edge and containment line through burn operations.

Yesterday, crews on the Lionshead Fire used aviation assets on the southern flank after the smoke cleared to support on-ground efforts. Dozers were used on the north side of the fire to go both direct and indirect to extend the fire line to the west towards Lionshead Peak. Firefighters located a spot fire on the southerm flank and were able to contain that spot.

P-515 Fire: Today, resources plan to focus their mop-up efforts on concentrated sources of heat along the southern and northern perimeter of the fire. Resources will work on the western flank to better secure the fire line.

Lionshead Fire: Resources will conduct direct and indirect operations to improve the P-440 road in preparation for burning out the northern flank and prepping the eastern flank to secure the fire line. Crews will continue road prep with masticators and hand work along the southern perimeter of the fire. A masticator is a machine used to grind, chip, or break apart fuels such as brush, small trees and slash into small pieces.

Weather and Fire Behavior: Light winds with temperatures in the upper 70’s is forecast for today. Lower elevations will see more humidity than in past days. Persistent burning conditions will be evident with dry fuels resistant to fire suppression. Firefighters may see short runs on steep slopes and torching with spot fires to a quarter mile.

Closures: Trout Lake Road at pavement end; Road B140 at Potter’s Pond; Road B210 and Road P-500. All trails south of Trout Lake, west of M-120 Metolious Bench, east of Mt. Jefferson, and north of J-195 will be closed to the public. Also, Tenino Road (P-200) will be closed to the public, only fire personnel and residents are allowed on Tenino Road (P-200).

Evacuations: A Level 1 Evacuation (Get Ready) is in effect for residents on Trout Lake Road west of US-26.

COVID-19: Precautionary measures have been implemented to prevent the spread of COVID-19. These measures include daily temperature screenings, mandatory use of face coverings, social distancing, and implementing more virtual work. Public and firefighter safety are a top priority. Prevention Message: Reduce wildfire risk, know your local fire restrictions.

Publication Type: News

This update is for the P-515 Fire and Lionshead Fire burning on the Warm Springs Reservation. Both fires are being managed for full suppression.

Current Situation: Yesterday’s inversion allowed firefighters to better secure fire lines around the P-515 Fire. Crews conducted burning operations in the northeastern flank to clean unburned pockets of fuel. The swing shift continued burning operations into the night on the western perimeter of the fire.

Yesterday, crews on the Lionshead Fire prepped roads east of the fire along the J-100 and J-200 roads.  Direct line was also prepped on the P-440 road.  The spot fire south of the Whitewater River was actively suppressed using aerial resources.

P-515 Fire: Containment is now up to 30% on the P-515 Fire. Today, firefighters will strengthen and expand control lines on all flanks of the fire. If conditions allow, crews will burn out along the fire on the northern perimeter to help secure the line. Firefighters will continue to extinguish spot fires on the northeast of the fire.

Lionshead Fire: Firefighters will improve the J-200 and J-100 roads to hold the fire to the north and west of these roads. Burning operations will connect indirect line on the southeastern flank and northern perimeter of the fire.  Fire managers’ objective is to keep the main fire north of the Whitewater River to protect to water quality and fish habitat.

Weather and Fire Behavior: Cloud cover and continued smoke are forecast for today which will prevent full potential for fire behavior. Cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity are expected.  Today’s inversion will last into the afternoon. Both fires may see rain showers later tonight. Firefighters may see occasional torching of trees and spotting of fires up to a quarter mile.

Evacuations: A Level 1 Evacuation (Get Ready) is in effect for residents on Trout Lake Road east of US-26.

COVID-19:  Precautionary measures have been implemented to prevent the spread of COVID-19.  These measures include daily temperature screenings, mandatory use of face coverings, social distancing, and implementing more virtual work.  Public and firefighter safety are a top priority.

Prevention Message: Make your home wildfire safe – Increase your defensible space.

Publication Type: News

This update is for the P-515 Fire and Lionshead Fire burning on the Warm Springs Reservation. Both fires continue to be managed for full suppression. The Quartz Butte Fire is in mop-up with no new fire activity to report. Four of the 8 helicopters assigned to the fires are Air National Guard Blackhawk helicopters.

Current Situation: The P515 fire is 4,338 acres and now 15% contained.  Because of current favorable conditions crews are building fire line directly at the burning perimeter where feasible to better secure the line. Burnout operations are being utilized in the northern and southern flanks to secure indirect lines and remove unburned pockets of fuel between the fire and the fire line. The swing shift worked to continue securing the northern flank.

The Lionshead Fire has spotted over to the south side of the Whitewater River and is currently being held to 1 acre by aircraft. Yesterday, crews on the Lionshead Fire were able to hold lines south of P-440 road.  Firefighters are clearing the J-100 and J-200 roads to prepare for future firing operations.

P-515 Fire: Today, crews along the northern perimeter will continue to secure and reinforce the fire line. Firefighters will conduct burnout operations as needed to secure the lines on the western flank.

Lionshead Fire: Firefighters will prep and hold the P-440 Road while looking for containment opportunities to secure the line on the south and west flanks.  Crews will continue to improve the J-100 and J-200 roads to keep the fire north of J-200 and west of J-100. Aircraft will be monitoring the spot fire south of the Whitewater River and support firefighters on the ground, as weather permits.

Weather and Fire Behavior: Expect morning inversion in lowlands and valleys until late morning. For the next several days it will be warm and dry, likely hazy with areas of smoke. Fire behavior could include high rates of spread on steep wind facing slopes along with sustained backing and active sideways spread.

P515 and Lionshead Fire Updates Aug 22 2020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

This update is for the P-515 Fire and Lionshead Fire burning on the Warm Springs Reservation. Both fires are being managed for full suppression. The Quartz Butte Fire is in mop-up with no new fire activity to report.

Current Situation: In spite of the strong winds yesterday, the P-515 Fire was held within the current footprint.  Retardant and helicopter bucket work assisted firefighters in keeping the P-515 Fire from advancing further to the east.  An Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Task Force remained focused on protecting threatened residences along County Line Road (Trout Lake Road).

Yesterday, the strong westerly winds pushed the Lionshead Fire down the Whitewater River Canyon.   Aviation resources, engines and crews were able to hold the fire west of the J-100 Road and north of the Whitewater River.

P-515 Fire: Crews will continue to build and improve direct and indirect containment lines on the south, west and north flanks.  Firefighters are looking for opportunities to capitalize on the work completed last night and tie the lines from the northeast and east flanks of the fire.

Lionshead Fire: Firefighters are preparing the J-440 Road to keep the fire from advancing to the north and the J-100 road is the planned containment line on east.  The team plans to utilize the river to keep the fire from spreading further south.Weather and Fire Behavior: Dry conditions are expected through the weekend with generally light winds.  The change in winds could influence fire direction and spread.  The fires may see high rates of spread on steep wind facing slopes.  Due to abundant dry fuels, difficult terrain, and breezy winds, the Lionshead Fire may see active fire behavior with spotting today.

Road Closures:

• Trout Lake Road at pavement end;
 • Road B140 at Potter’s Pond;
 • Road B210 and Road P-500.

Evacuations: A Level 1 Evacuation (Get Ready) is in effect for residents on Trout Lake Road east of US-26.

COVID-19: Northwest Team 7 Incident Management Team has implemented precautionary measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in both fire camp and the surrounding community.  These measures include daily temperature screenings, mandatory use of face coverings, social distancing, and implementing more virtual work.  Public and firefighter safety are a top priority.

P515 and Lionshead Fire Updates Aug 21 2020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

 This update is for the P-515 Fire and Lionshead Fire burning on the Warm Springs Reservation. Lightning has been determined to be the cause of both of these fires. These fires are 14 miles west of the Warm Springs community. An Incident Command Post has been established at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. The Quartz Butte Fire is in mop-up with no new fire activity to report.

Suppression priorities include limiting the spread of the fires, protecting structures, and minimizing the impacts to important cultural and natural resources. The P-515 and Lionshead Fires are actively burning in areas of timber with grass, shrub, and patchy conifer understory. In many areas there are scattered snags and dense stands of young trees. Both fires are being managed for full suppression.

Current Situation: Yesterday, both fires exhibited rapid fire spread with spotting and increased acreage due to westerly winds. COVID-19 mitigations are being taken to limit exposure risks to firefighters and the tribal community, per CDC guidelines. P-515 Fire: A Level 1 Evacuation (Get Ready) is in effect for residents on Trout Lake Road east of US-26. Crews began working to protect structures potentially in the path of the fire spread yesterday, and an Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Task Force has joined the structure protection effort today. Firefighters are seeking direct containment opportunities on the east side of the fire in order to keep it from reaching US-26.

Lionshead Fire: The Lionshead Fire is burning in the Whitewater River Canyon on the north side of the river. Firefighters are working to keep the fire on the north side of the Whitewater River Canyon, and stop the easterly spread of the fire. Access is difficult on the Lionshead Fire because of the steep terrain and limited road access.

Weather and Fire Behavior: A cold front is expected to cross the area with westerly winds gusting up to 30 mph. While temperatures and humidity are moderating, firefighters are expecting gusting winds to cause problematic fire behavior.

Road Closures:
• Trout Lake Road at pavement end;
• Road B140 at Potter’s Pond;
• Road B210 and Road P-500.

P515 and Lionshead Fire Updates Aug 20 2020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

 Currently there are three fires burning on the Warm Springs Reservation: the P-515 Fire is the largest; the Lionshead Fire; and the Quarts Butte Fire. At 6:00 a.m. today, an Interagency

Incident Management Team (NW Team 7) from the Pacific Northwest (Eric Knerr, IC) assumed management of the P-515 Fire and the Lionshead Fire. Command of the Quarts Butte Fire, which is nearly contained, will remain with Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs Fire Management.

The P-515 and Lionshead Fires are burning in areas of grass, shrubs, and heavy timber, approximately 14 miles west of the Warm Springs community. Suppression priorities include limiting the spread of the fires and minimizing the impacts to important cultural and natural resources. All three fires are being managed for full suppression.

Current Situation: Since the recent lightning activity there is a high demand for firefighting resources nationally and now regionally. Fire managers are looking for opportunities to safely engage the fires while prioritizing firefighter and public safety and protecting values at risk. COVID-19 mitigations are being taken to limit exposure risks to firefighters and the tribal community, per CDC guidelines. With the dry and windy conditions late yesterday evening, the P-515 Fire made a significant push to east.

P-515 Fire: The P-515 Fire is approximately 2,326 acres and 0% contained. For today’s operations, firefighters will continue to secure roads and fire lines on the south and west flanks and scouting for potential containment opportunities on other flanks. As of tonight, there will be a night operational period or ‘swing shift’. As conditions merit these crews will complete burning-out to better secure the containment lines and monitor and patrol fire edges.

Lionshead Fire: The Lionshead Fire is approximately 368 acres and 0% contained and burning in the Whitewater River Canyon on the north side of the river. Firefighters are scouting the trail along the river for a potential anchor point to begin engagement. Access is difficult on the Lionshead Fire because of the steep terrain and limited road access.

Quarts Butte Fire: The Quarts Butte Fire is 29 acres and is in mop up.

Weather and Fire Behavior: Dry conditions are expected for the next few days, with cooler conditions. However, on Friday as a cold front crosses the area westerly winds will pick up with speeds of 20 to 25 mph, at least. Today potential fire behavior may include areas of very active surface fire spread where fuels are contiguous.

Road Closures: Trout Lake Road at pavement end; Road B140 at Potter’s Pond; Road B210 and Road P-500.
