Lionshead Fire Update – Tuesday, September 8, 2020 – 9:00 a.m.

Weather and Fire Behavior:  The Red Flag Warning continues throughout today for gusty winds and low relative humidity. East winds are expected to be strongest early in the day, then gradually subside. Temperatures will be cooler today, reaching the 70s in the lowlands and the 60s at higher elevations. The winds are expected to continue to push the fire west further onto the Willamette National Forest. The fire may also be pushed to the southwest, past the south flank of Mt. Jefferson. Long-range spotting may ignite new fires a mile or more from the main fire.Last 24 hours: The Lionshead Fire was actively burning early Monday.  Sunday’s spot fires on the northwest flank burned into the main fire. As a strong cold front approached and passed through the vicinity, winds became gusty and shifted to coming from the east. The winds, smoke, and blowing dust grounded aircraft mid-day. The winds aligned with terrain and pushed the northwest edge of the fire through a band of heavier fuels north of Mt. Jefferson, south of Shitike Creek. The fire ran 4 miles in less than 2 hours, crossing onto the Willamette National Forest in the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness. The fire continued to burn actively through the night, spreading west to near Idanha and the community of Breitenbush.More work was completed on the J-100, J-173, P-400, and P-500 roads, preparing them as potential control lines. Work was nearly finished on the roads between the south end of the fire and the Warm Springs Reservation boundary.Today’s Activities: Due to the strong east winds and continued low humidity, the fire is expected to spread further to the west. Firefighters will be shifted as needed to areas where they can safely and effectively work to slow the fire’s spread. Some fire personnel will continue to prepare indirect control lines to the south and north of the fire. Aircraft operations may be restricted by the wind and poor visibility.Evacuations: Orders are being issued for evacuations as conditions change. Please monitor the local area sheriff’s department websites and Facebook pages for updates. (Deschutes, Jefferson, Wasco, Linn, and Marion counties)Closures: For public and firefighter safety, roads and trails on the southwest portion of the Warm Springs Reservation near the fires are closed to the public. Forty miles of the Pacific Crest Trail are closed between Santiam Pass and Olallie Lake. Much of the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness and some nearby lands and recreation sites are closed. See Willamette, Deschutes, and Mt. Hood N.F. websites for trail, road and area closures.  Deschutes NF Alerts     Willamette NF Alerts     Mt. Hood NF Alerts A Temporary Flight Restriction is in place over the P-515 and Lionshead Fires. Wildfires are a No Drone Zone.

P515 and Lionshead Fire Update Sep 7 2020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News
Warm Springs, Oregon - This update is for the Lionshead and P-515 Fires. Both fires are currently burning on the Warm Springs Reservation and are being managed for full suppression. The Lionshead Fire has triggered closures on other public land jurisdictions and has the potential to burn onto National Forest Lands. Northwest Team 10 would like to sincerely thank the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs and The Bureau of Indian Affairs for their support and professional partnership while managing the two fires. Due to increased fire complexity, a Type 1 team, PNW Team 3 under the leadership of Noel Livingston, will assume responsibility for the fire on September 8th.

Current Status: On Sunday, a smoke inversion kept large fire growth to a minimum on the Lionshead Fire. The fire is now 18,615 acres and 31% contained. Firefighters took advantage of the relatively quiet fire behavior to locate and cool spot fires and scout for possible places to stop the fire's spread. Vegetation was removed along the J-100 and P-400 roads to prepare them for use as control lines on the north and south sides of the fire. Potential control lines were also identified west of the J-100 Road to try and stop the fire's spread to the southwest. Mop-up operations and removal of excess equipment continued on the P-515 Fire. Surplus resources are being reassigned to the Lionshead Fire.

Today’s Operations: Fire resources will continue to work along the J-100 and P-400 roads on potential containment lines. Interagency Hotshot crews will diligently work to establish lines between fingers of the Lionshead Fire and burn out fuels to reduce the chance of further spread to the southeast.

Weather and Fire Behavior: There is a Red Flag Warning in effect today for strong winds and low humidity. A cold front is expected to pass over the fire area this afternoon, bringing winds gusting up to 30 mph from the east to northeast through Tuesday. The winds have the potential to push the fire through unburned areas to the west of the fire and north of Bald Peter. Temperatures will be cooler and relative humidity slightly higher than yesterday.

Closures: For public and firefighter safety, roads and trails on the southwest portion of the Warm Springs Reservation near the fires are closed to the public. Forty miles of the Pacific Crest Trail are closed between Santiam Pass and Olallie Lake. Much of the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness and some nearby lands and recreation sites are closed. See Willamette, Deschutes, and Mt. Hood N.F. websites for trail and area closures.

 Fire Information: 971-277-5075

Warm Springs, Oregon
 - This update is for the P-515 and Lionshead Fires, burning on the Warm Springs Reservation. Both fires are being managed for full suppression.

Current Status:
The perimeter of the P-515 Fire is completely lined. Hand crews continue to improve containment lines and mop up is ongoing in close coordination with resource advisors. Back haul of excess equipment is being facilitated and resources are being incorporated with the Lionshead Fire.
The Lionshead Fire burned actively yesterday and is now 15,945 acres and 31% contained. The fire spotted approximately 2 miles to the north into the Shitike Drainage. The fire also made a push to the southwest, then hooked back to the east, crossing Bald Peter. Air resources worked the edges of the fire giving firefighters time to continue to assess potential containment options along the fire’s perimeter.

Today’s Operations
: Ground crews will continue to assess potential opportunities for indirect containment options along the P-400 Road to the north and the J-140 Road to the south. Low relative humidity, high temperatures, and dry conditions will lead to continued extremely active fire behavior throughout the day. A strong low-level inversion will limit air support through most of the day. Crews will continue to mop up along all secure containment lines and spot fires.

Weather and Fire Behavior
: With abundant dry fuels and both daytime and nighttime humidity values that continue to be very low, extremely active fire behavior is expected again today. Winds on Sunday will be light and variable followed by a cold front on Monday moving from north to south with wind gusts expected to be 35-40 mph from the east-northeast. A fire weather watch is in effect for gusty winds and low humidity Monday and Tuesday.

Closures
: For public and firefighter safety, roads and trails on the southwest portion of the Warm Springs Reservation near the fires are closed to the public. Deschutes National Forest and Willamette National Forest are closing much of the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness. Forty miles of the Pacific Crest Trail are closed between Santiam Pass and Olallie Lake. Mt. Hood National Forest has closed the Olallie Lake and Breitenbush Lake area.  Allingham Campground and campgrounds to the north are now closed.  See Willamette, Deschutes, and Mt. Hood N.F. websites for trail and area closures.

Temporary Flight Restriction is in place over the P-515 and Lionshead Fires. Wildfires are a No Drone Zone.

Evacuations

P515 and Lionshead Fire Update Sep 5 2020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Warm Springs, Oregon - This update is for the P-515 and Lionshead Fires, burning on the Warm Springs Reservation.  Both fires are being managed for full suppression.Current Status:  The perimeter of the P-515 Fire is completely lined. Hand crews will improve existing containment lines, locate and mitigate hazard trees and grid and patrol for spot fires within existing hand and dozer lines to meet agency standards.

The Lionshead Fire is now 11,777 acres and 31% contained.  The fire remains within the control lines on the northern, eastern, and southern perimeters, where crews are mopping up and securing control lines. Active fire continues within the Whitewater River drainage, pushing westward. The southwest flank of the fire has crossed Parker Creek. A thermal inversion, resulting in poor visibility, limited the use of helicopters on the fire yesterday.

Today’s Operations: In the southwest section of the Lionshead Fire, noted for its steep and complex terrain, crews will scout for safety zones and opportunities for indirect and contingency line construction. Fire crews face continued challenges due to the difficult terrain, high temperatures and dry conditions. Masticators are being used to improve roads in the area to serve as primary or contingency lines. Elsewhere on the fire, crews are conducting mop up operations along all containment lines and spot fires.

Weather and Fire Behavior:  A low pressure system, dipping south from Canada, will be accompanied by gusty winds and even drier air. This will put the incident area in near - Red Flag Warning weather conditions by  Monday.  Gusty winds and fingers of dry continuous fuel in Milk Creek, Parker Creek and Whitewater River drainages, on the fires western edge, could trigger spot fires and test control lines.

Closures:
Trout Lake Road at pavement end; Road B-140 at Potter’s Pond; Road B210 and Road P-500.All trails south of Trout Lake, west of M-120 Metolius Bench, east of Mt. Jefferson, and north of J-195 will be closed to the public. Tenino Road (P-200) is closed to the public, with only fire personnel and residents permitted. See Willamette and Deschutes N.F. websites for trail and area closures.

A Temporary Flight Restriction is in place over the P-515 and Lionshead Fires. Wildfires are a No Drone Zone.

COVID-19: Our highest priority is the safety of the public and all wildland fire personnel. To keep firefighters and communities healthy and safe during the P-515 and Lionshead Fires, all fire personnel are expected to follow recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This includes limiting public access to the Incident Command Post (ICP) at the Warm Springs Fairgrounds. While COVID-19 circumstances are rapidly evolving, and federal agency guidance continues to adapt with the situation, NW Team 10 is prepared for wildland fire activity during this time.
Prevention Message: The public is urged to drive cautiously this Labor Day Weekend as fire crews continue to travel on the highways working on the Lionshead and P-515 fires.

Warm Springs, Oregon - This update is for the P-515 Fire and Lionshead Fire burning on the Warm Springs Reservation.  Both fires are being managed for full suppression.

Current Status:  The P-515 fire remains in mop up and patrol status. Resources no longer needed on P-515 are assisting crews on the Lionshead fire. As resources reach their 14-day limit, they are being demobilized as appropriate to meet operational needs.

The Lionshead Fire is now 9,989 acres and 31% contained.  The fire has progressed farther to the west and southwest, moving up the Whitewater River and Milk Creek drainages.  The fire has pushed the southwest flank, crossing an established dozer line. Air resources have continued to work on slowing spread, with multiple heavy air tankers dropping retardant on the southern flank throughout the afternoon.   Helicopter resources, including the Air National Guard supported ground resources throughout the afternoon, yesterday.

Today’s Operations: Air resources will continue to support ground crews on the southwestern flank to slow spread, as crews work to determine possible fire line locations in the southwest flank. On the NW flank, crews will continue to look for opportunities to extend line to the west. Fire crews face continued challenges due to the difficult terrain, high temperatures and dry conditions.

Weather and Fire Behavior:  Transport winds will push smoke to the northeast with winds to 13 mph, and lower elevation gusts to 20 mph.   Temperatures will be 15 to 20 degrees above average with slightly cooler temperatures at higher elevations. Abundant dry fuels, difficult terrain and persistent burning conditions with very active fire behavior into the overnight hours is expected.

Closures: Trout Lake Road at pavement end; Road B140 at Potter’s Pond; Road B210 and Road P-500. All trails south of Trout Lake, west of M-120 Metolius Bench, east of Mt. Jefferson, and north of J-195 will be closed to the public. Tenino Road (P-200) is closed to the public, with only fire personnel and residents permitted.

Evacuations: There are currently no evacuation orders associated with the P-515 or Lionshead Fires.
