Homestead Complex Fire Update for Saturday, August 24, 2024
No Man, Salmon 33, Horse Heaven Creek, Bullpup, Fuller Lake, Reynold’s Butte, Lost Bucket
Start date: July 19, 2024 | Location: Northeast of Glide, Oregon | Total Personnel: 1,062
Total Homestead Complex Fire size: 5,898 acres | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 40%
Summary
High humidity and rain showers limited fire spread on Friday. Remote Automatic Weather Stations (RAWS) near the fires recorded between 1/2 and 3/4“ of rain during the last 24 hours which brings the 48-hour total to over 1 inch. This precipitation will not fully extinguish the fires on the Homestead Complex, but will cause a significant delay in the use of tactical firing.
No Man (2,080 acres) and Salmon 33 (261 ac.): Firefighters continue to work on an indirect fireline on the northeast side of the No Man Fire and are making progress in achieving containment on the Salmon 33 Fire.
Horse Heaven Creek Fire (2,295 ac.): Firelines are nearly complete on the east side of the fire with chipping and mastication being used to reinforce these lines. Fire managers are developing plans to construct a fireline from Horse Heaven Creek to Ridge Road to stop fire spread to the north.
Bullpup Fire (476 ac.) and Fuller Lake Fire (418 ac.): Two hot shot crews are scheduled to arrive at the fire today and will begin constructing line on the north side of the Bullpup Fire. The focus on the Fuller Lake Fire is to continue felling dead trees (snags) and work toward anchoring firelines on the east side into an old burn scar.
Reynolds Butte Fire (334 ac): 100% contained on August 22, 2024.
Lost Bucket Fire (34 ac.): 100% contained on July 29, 2024.
Weather: High temperatures today will range from the upper 40’s to low 60’s with decreasing clouds.

Quick Facts
Fire Perimeter: approx. 278 acres
Initial Start: 08/20/24
Location: Ruby Creek Drainage - approximately 16 miles northwest of Cusick, WA
Hazards: Timber snags, bees, soft road shoulders, high winds and narrow roads
Values at Risk: Private residences, ongoing timber sales
Cause: Undetermined
Containment: 0%
Personnel: 226
Structures destroyed: 0
Evacuations: None
Road Closures: Ruby Creek Road (5.5 miles in from Hwy 20), Tacoma Creek Rd (about 11 miles west of Hwy 20), and Tacoma Divide Road (about 4 miles south of Hwy 20)
Ione, WA –
PUBLIC AND FIREFIGHTER SAFETY IS THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY.
The Upper Ruby Fire is in central Pend Oreille County in the Ruby Creek Drainage approximately 16 miles northwest of Cusick, WA. It is burning in fuels remaining on the ground following logging activities and in heavily forested areas.
OPERATIONS: Yesterday, firefighters used heavy equipment and hand tools to build fireline. Air resources and ground crews worked in tandem to construct direct line. Firefighters were aided by aerial heat detection capabilities that identified the exact location of spot fires as small as a coffee cup. Direct fire control lines were connected surrounding the entire fire perimeter with the exception of 0.5 miles on the northwest flank.
Crews were safely pulled back from the fire area late in the day due to the strong wind gusts that accompanied the arrival of evening thunderstorms. As crews arrive to the fire area this morning, they will assess the impact of the wind and rain event and mitigate new hazards.
Today, crews will improve and widen lines around the fire and plan to connect the remaining section. Engines will provide crews with water support to strengthen constructed lines.
HAZARDS: Hazards to firefighters include fire-weakened and standing dead trees (snags), fallen trees from recent wind gusts, slick roads and terrain from possible rain, and a very high population of ground nesting bees.
WEATHER: Cooler daytime temperatures around 60 degrees and a chance of rain showers is expected until this evening. Temperatures will remain cool over the weekend. Clouds decrease overnight with some patchy morning fog that will give way to mostly sunny skies on Sunday.

Willamette Complex South Update
Chalk, Coffeepot, McKinley, Moss Mountain, Tire Mountain, 208, and 217 Fires
Saturday, August 24, 2024
Total Willamette Complex South Personnel: 864
Total Willamette Complex South Acres: 13,082
Resources: 1 Type 2 Hotshot Crew, 15 Type 2 Crews, 1 Type 2 Initial Attack Crew, 28 Engines, 8 Dozers, 7 Masticators, 4 Skid Steer, and 6 Feller Bunchers
Fire Cause: Lightning
Summary
Widespread showers fell throughout the Willamette Complex South yesterday. Since Thursday afternoon, significant wetting rain fell over the Willamette Complex South fires and higher elevations saw periods of light snow. Firefighters observed smoldering pockets of heat the past two days. The recent moisture will continue impacting the complex fire activity over the next few days. Fire activity is expected to slowly increase as a drying trend sets in over the next week. Crews will continue to work on mop-up and patrolling the fires within the complex as conditions are safe.
Chalk Fire (5,684 acres, 66% containment)
Crews will continue working on securing the fire edge along the east side. The west side of the fireline continues to be the priority for ongoing work. Hazard trees remain a risk to firefighters along the west side of the fire, especially after the recent precipitation. Efforts to remove the hazard trees by felling crews will continue.
Moss Mountain Fire (864 acres, 0% containment)
Rain and snow limited the progress of crews yesterday. As conditions improve, crews will continue to prioritize strengthening the contingency lines to hold back the southern growth of the Moss Mountain Fire. Holding efforts are challenged by the heavy timber, steep terrain, rollout downhill, and recent precipitation. A hotshot crew is supporting the ongoing efforts. Heavy machinery is helping to create more open space between trees in the shaded fuel break. At the same time, feller bunchers, masticators, and chippers are used to clear woody undergrowth and prevent fire from spreading beyond the containment line.
208 Fire (252 acres, 0% containment)
The 208 Fire is being monitored and patrolled using aerial resources due to minimal activity on the perimeter. When necessary, helicopters use bucket drops to keep fire in check.
217 Fire (38 acres 100% contained), Tire Mountain Fire (23 acres 100% contained), McKinley Fire (24 acres 100% contained), Coffeepot Fire (6,197 acres, 100% contained)
With 100% containment on the 217, Tire Mountain, Coffee Pot and McKinley fires, all are being patrolled regularly.
Weather and Fire Behavior
After another round of rain Friday night, cool and moist conditions will continue Saturday under mostly cloudy skies. Temperatures will be in the 50s across the Willamette Complex South with 80% humidity.

Publication Type: News
Unified Command: CIIMT5 & CAL FIRE
Fire Size: 3,017 acres
Percent Contained: 0%
Personnel: 918
Cause: Lightning
Start Date: Saturday, August 3, 2024, at 10:05 AM
Location: Southeast of Three Rivers, CA
COFFEE POT FIRE PUBLIC MEETING: A public meeting about the Coffee Pot Fire will be held on Monday, August 26, at 6:00 PM. The meeting will occur at the Three Rivers Memorial Building, 43490 Sierra Drive, Three Rivers. If you can't attend in person, you can watch the meeting live on the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks Facebook page @SequoiaKingsNPS or YouTube @sequoiaandkingscanyonnps5018.
FIRE INFORMATION: A Public Information Officer will be at the Three Rivers Village Market daily from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM to provide fire information and answer questions.
CURRENT SITUATION: The Coffee Pot Fire continued to slowly advance in all directions yesterday, due in part to cooler temperatures and higher humidity. Nearly 50 percent of the indirect control lines are complete. Control lines between South Fork Drive and Cinnamon Gap, and Cinnamon Gap to the top of Case Mountain are nearing completion. Any new fire growth today will likely be limited to areas with easily combustible vegetation, such as dead branches, leaves, and needles.
Today, firefighters will continue using a full suppression strategy. The main focus for fire crews and dozers is to finish building indirect control lines to protect the communities. Hoses and pumps are being added along the indirect control lines on the south and west flanks. In addition, firefighters are completing the indirect line north of the historic cabins to the Mineral King Road. Water-dropping planes and helicopters have supported these efforts by reducing the fire's intensity. Fire crews will also keep working in the Giant Sequoia groves adjacent to Case Mountain, clearing vegetation around the trees to decrease fire intensity.
WEATHER: The weather will be partly cloudy today, becoming hazy in the afternoon. Cooler than normal temperatures continue, with light variable winds. Humidity levels will remain higher than average. Clouds will lift higher in the afternoon but may linger through the day. Tomorrow will be several degrees warmer, but temperatures remain below normal.
SMOKE IMPACTS: This morning, expect cloudy and hazy skies to limit mountain visibility, with less surface impacts in the valley and Sierra foothills. Locations from Lake Kaweah eastward will see continued hazy skies most of the day with conditions that are Moderate to Unsafe for Sensitive Groups. The bulk of today's smoke will settle in the South and East Forks of Kaweah Creek between Hammond and Mineral King Station. Wind patterns will continue to channel the smoke along these river drainages, causing short periods of Unhealthy to Very Unhealthy conditions in Hammond, Mineral King, and the Giant Sequoia Forest Village. Visitors and residents in these areas can expect to smell smoke, see hazy skies, and experience mild irritation from the smoke particles. Take precautions to reduce outdoor activities, especially those in sensitive groups. For more information on current wildfire smoke impacts in your community, please visit AirNow.gov or fire.airnow.gov.
HIGHWAY AND ROAD IMPACTS: Highway 198, Mineral King Road, and Generals Highway in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are open. Due to heavy equipment and personnel working on Mineral King Road, expect 30-minute delays or longer. Please plan accordingly. Visitors should exercise extreme caution, stay alert, and drive slowly to keep themselves and fire crews safe.
BLM AND PARK CLOSURES: The portion of South Fork Drive within Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks and trails accessed from the road, including the Lady Bug and Garfield Grove Trails, are closed. Park closure information is available online at nps.gov/seki. The Bureau of Land Management has also issued a closure of the Case Mountain Extensive Recreation Management Area at blm.gov/press-release.
EVACUATION WARNING: An Evacuation WARNING has been issued for TLC Zones TLC-E128-B and TLC-E094-B, area north of South Fork Drive, East of Skyline Drive (Salt Creek Fire Control Road), South of Mineral King Road, and West of the National Park Boundary. An evacuation WARNING means you should prepare to evacuate the area should the fire approach your home, or, if ordered to do so. Please stay clear and out of the areas affected by the fire. If there is an emergency, please dial 911. For more regarding evacuations, alert notifications, and zone information, please visit tularecounty.ca.gov/emergencies.
PUBLIC NOTICE: Wildfires are a no-fly zone for unauthorized aircraft, including drones. If you fly, we can’t. For more information, visit knowbeforeyoufly.org.

Special Notes: Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team 1 (RM CIMT1) assumed management of the Wapiti Fire at 6:00 am this morning. We thank the outgoing Northern Rockies CIMT5, hosting agencies, cooperators, and the many firefighters on the incident for a smooth and comprehensive transition to our team.
State Highway 21 is closed from east of Lowman to Stanley (MP84 to MP130) due to wildfire activity. The closure is necessary for public safety and to provide safe conditions for firefighters working along the highway.
A community meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, August 25, 2024 at 6 p.m. at the Stanley Community Building in Stanley, ID.
Current Situation: Multiple days of Red Flag Warnings and extreme burning conditions have been a challenge for firefighters on the Wapiti Fire. It is estimated that the fire has grown to over 45,000 acres over the period, expanding most significantly on the northeastern corner across Stanley Lake and crossing State Highway 21 to the north. It has also grown westward and crossed Highway 21 on the fire’s west side, as well as moving towards the Warm Springs area east of Lowman. Crews, engines, heavy equipment, and aircraft are working to secure structures and other values at risk through point protection strategies throughout the fire affected area.
Crews have been working on structure assessments and implementing point protection tactics along the Highway 21 corridor from the northern extension of the fire south to Stanley. This includes noting hazards such as fuel tanks and flammable vegetation near structures, as well as deploying hoses, pumps, and sprinkler systems around improvements in the wildland-urban interface. Today, a Structure Protection Group East has been established to continue and expand this work.
In the interior of the fire, around Grandjean and along the 524 Road, engines and crews continue 24 hour a day work to mop up around structures and secure the area to prevent any potential for reburns to occur.
Crews on the west side of the fire are also working 24 hours a day to protect structures from the fire’s westward advance. Fireline around structures and hoses, pumps, and sprinkler systems have been deployed. A Structure Protection Group West has been established today to continue and expand this work. Structure assessments are ongoing in the Warm Springs area. Further north, fire managers are assessing the fire’s recent advancement across Highway 21 and are developing suppression strategies for containing that portion of the fire.
Weather, Fuels, and Fire Behavior:
Red Flag Warning conditions existed yesterday, leading to extreme fire behavior. Afternoon SSW winds over the fire were sustained at 40-45 mph, and relative humidity was 15-20%. A cold front moved in from the SW overnight, bringing increasing humidity and cloud cover with a possibility of scattered showers over the next 24 hours. Precipitation may average about 0.10 inch, which could moderate fire behavior for a day
or two. Skies will clear Sunday night and nighttime temperatures will drop to around freezing.

Middle Fork Complex Update
August 24, 2024
Fire Size: 41,519 Acres
Completion: 5%
Resources: Helicopters: 5 | Engines: 18 | Hand crews: 10 | Total Personnel 546
Location: Approximately nine miles east of Garden Valley, ID
Started: August 8, 2024
Cause: Naturally Caused, Lightning
Management: Great Basin Complex Incident Management Team 3
Community Meeting
A community meeting will be held today at 6 p.m. at the Garden Valley Hall, 342 Village Circle, Crouch, Idaho. Incident Commander Brett Waters, key team members, and representatives from the Boise National Forest will provide updates on the Middle Fork Complex Fire and address any questions.
Weather and Fire Behavior
A low-pressure system will provide relief from red flag weather, bringing mostly cloudy skies, cooler temperatures, much higher humidities, lighter winds, and scattered light showers to the fire areas. As a result, these conditions will moderate fire behavior at all elevations, limiting rates of fire spread.
Operations
A red flag warning (high temperatures, gusty winds, low humidity) was in place yesterday and contributed to fire growth on both the Nellie and Bulldog fires. Crews are actively engaged in efforts along FS Road 698 to contain the Bulldog Fire, focusing on the western edge. Structure protection measures in addition to the placement of pumps, hand lines, and dozer lines, have been established along the southwestern perimeter. The fire experienced moderate growth on the northern and southeastern sides.
The Nellie Fire was most active on both the northern and southern edges yesterday. No structures have been damaged or destroyed, and infrastructure at the Deadwood Reservoir remains secure. Ongoing efforts are focused on protecting homes, the Scott Mountain and Deadwood Lookouts, the communication tower, and structures along Highway 17 corridor with protection measures implemented on the southern edge of the fire.
Several spot fires became established on the northwestern side of Deadwood Reservoir during the last few days of dry, hot, and windy weather. Crews are actively working to contain them. Additionally, contingency lines are being explored along the Deadwood Reservoir, with the goal of keeping the Nellie Fire within previously burned areas. Power lines along Highway 17 were de-energized yesterday to ensure safe operations and have since been re-energized.
Closures
The Boise National Forest has issued Order Number 0402-06-59, effective August 23, 2024. For additional details, please visit the Boise National Forest website at https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/boise/alerts-notices. Hwy 21 is closed from the Sour Dough Lodge in Lowman to Stanley (MP 84 to 130) due to wildfire activity. Only local traffic is permitted between the Sour Dough and Warm Springs Airstrip. Visit https://511.idaho.gov/ for more info.
Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFR): A TFR is issued over the fire area. It is illegal for members of the public to fly drones over or near wildfires because of the potential for accidents and disruption of suppression operations.
