BRATTAIN FIRE UPDATE
September 20, 2020 @ 9 AM
Yesterday:
Lines in all areas of the fire seem to be holding well. There is still a lot of heat on the interior, and smoky conditions continue, with most smoke coming from about 200 acres burning on the interior in the northwest corner of the fire. Mop-up and line patrol operations were a focus, and there was no major fire perimeter growth. Cooler temperatures moved in, making conditions favorable for operations to shift resources and allow us to move into more of a rehabilitation mode. Strategic burning operations moved into a more occasional status instead of constant. We held a virtual community meeting on Facebook, so if you missed it you can still view it on our Facebook page @R6FWNF.
Today:
Fire managers were able to lower the profile of night operations last night, a positive development. Expect the same creeping and smoldering we saw yesterday, with smoke mostly coming from the interior in the northwest corner of the fire. We will continue mop-up and patrol lines in all divisions. Firing operations will be used to hasten burning of unburned fuels in the interior islands to reinforce fire control lines. Mild, southwest terrain-driven winds are expected. Higher humidity is expected this morning, with temps warming in the afternoon and humidity lowering to around 15%. No red flag warnings are expected. We are moving into more active repair/rehab operations, and a special rehab module is being mobilized to focus specifically on these activities. Crews have four or five more days of activity before a reduction in personnel will occur.
Evacuations:
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has updated the following evacuation notices:
Level 3 (Go) – South of the Murphy Ranch on Clover Flat Road east to Valley Falls
Level 2 (Set) – Highway 31 from Summer Lake Store south to Red House Lane, all of Paisley to Valley Falls; Clover Flat Road from Hwy 31 (Beachler’s Corner) to Murphy Ranch
Level 1 (Ready) – Highway 31 from Summer Lake Store to Picture Rock Pass; Highway 395 from Valley Falls east to Chandler State Park
Forest Closure:
From Forest Road 29 southeast to Forest Road 3510 and the 28 Road east, all National Forest System lands and facilities are closed per Forest Closure Order 06-02-03-20-03. Forest Road 3315 is closed; the 28 Road is open.

Yesterday:
After five consecutive days of Red Flag conditions, a frontal passage brought erratic winds, but cooler temperatures and increased humidity. No precipitation was received but crews were able to stop the forward progression of the fire in the northwest and southeast corners last night. This was accomplished with the support of eight helicopters, Crews finished mopping up along the northeast quadrant of the fire; all resources were moved to other priority areas. The east will be in patrol status; access roads will be open to allow for resource advisors to assess rehabilitation strategies. Heavy equipment will continue to improve contingency lines and look for hot spots along the south flank of the fire where fire was seen creeping and smoldering yesterday; northwest winds will test these lines today. BRATTAIN FIRE UPDATE
September 18, 2020 @ 9 AM
Yesterday:
Another very active day for firefighting resources yesterday battling the elevated fire conditions but seizing opportunities to increase fireline construction and containment. Crews constructed fireline in the southwest corner of the fire and in the northwest quadrant of the fire. They were supported by numerous helicopters. Containment lines in the northeast and east flanks of the fire held as crews patrolled for hotspots. Fire behavior and accessibility allowed crews to continue the direct attack in the southern area of the fire with handcrews, engines and dozers. Logging equipment and masticators or “brushcutters” continue to improve Forest Roads 3360 and 3510 as a contingency line along the south flank of the fire.
Today:
After five consecutive days of Red Flag conditions, a much-needed reprieve in the weather is expected late this afternoon after a frontal passage. This will bring erratic winds but cooler temperatures and a chance of precipitation. Crews will continue mop-up and patrol along the north and east side of the fire along Hwy 31. Crews and heavy equipment will continue to widen and strengthen lines and conduct hoselay operations in the south and look for any spot fires near Clover Flat Road. Dozers will continue line construction in the northwest quadrant of the fire to increase containment. Improved weather conditions and possible precipitation will greatly improve the ability for crews and equipment to go direct and construct fireline.

BRATTAIN FIRE UPDATE
September 17, 2020 @ 9 AM
Yesterday:
Additional aircraft, more engines and hotshot crews arrived at the incident. In the northwest, containment lines were established using roads, dozer lines, natural breaks and old burn scars. Forest Road 3510 and Clover Flat Road were prepped as containment lines on the south and southwest perimeters where the fire was creeping downslope. Dozer lines were able to tie in on the northwest with good black line near the Ben Young fire scar. As the day progressed, direct fire attack tactics were implemented in the south to protect private property, critical infrastructure and timber resources.
Today:
Another critical day for firefighting resources today as another Red Flag Warning is in effect from 2 – 8 pm, with an eye to some much-needed reprieve in the weather going into Friday with cooler temperatures, lighter winds and a slight chance of precipitation. In the north and east along Hwy 31, containment lines are holding nicely as crews will continue to monitor and patrol looking for any hotspots. Fire officials have been moving resources from these secured areas over to the south and west side of the fire. Fire behavior and accessibility should allow crews to continue direct attack in the southern area of the fire with handcrews, engines and dozers. Along Forest Road 3360, dozer lines will connect for an extended containment line with possible firing operations in this area. Expect to see several aircraft working the fire today.
