   EMERGENCY FIRE CLOSURE

 

Public Lands in Gila County in the Vicinity of the Telegraph Fire

The Telegraph Fire began on June 4, 2021 and is currently burning south of Highway 60. The current fire perimeter stretches about 25 miles, west of the Arizona Trail to Globe in the northeast, straddling Route 177. The fire perimeter includes lands administered by the Tonto National Forest, the Bureau of Land Management, including the White Canyon Wilderness, as well as State-administered lands. There are also private and Arizona State Land Department lands. Pursuant to 43 CFR 8351.2-1 or 43 CFR 9212.2 (a) and effective at 10:00 p.m. June 14, 2021 until rescinded, given the dynamic and continued growth of the fire, public access is temporarily prohibited to public lands in Pinal County within the Telegraph Fire Operational Area as noted below. The Emergency Fire Closure issued on June 6, 2021, remains in effect for public lands to the southwest of the fire. Closure applies to public lands within the area bounded as follows:   ·        West to Ray Mine, ·        South to mile point 156 on Route 77, ·        East to the San Carlos Apache Reservation, and ·        North to the southern boundary of the Tonto National Forest.   Temporary Prohibited Acts: 1.             Entry to public lands by motorized use, pedestrian or equestrian use, and recreational use unless a specific exemption has been granted. 2.             Entry to White Canyon Wilderness.   A violation of this closure is punishable by a fine of not more than $1,000.00 or imprisonment of not more than 12 months, or both.   Exempted:   Except in emergency conditions or permission by an agency authorized officer, there are no exceptions to this closure.   Acting Associate District Manager Tucson Field Office Bureau of Land Management, Gila District

Telegraph Fire Morning Update – June 14, 2021

Residents in areas affected by the fire should remain vigilant and be prepared to evacuate. Evacuation notifications are issued when danger is imminent and life threatening.

  The fire remained very active last night east of Pioneer Pass Road, south in Pioneer Basin. A spot fire occurred east of Pioneer Pass campground late yesterday and pushed eastward over the crest of East Mountain.  Overnight crews conducted burn out operations along Pioneer Pass Road south from the Signal Peak area, and along the contingency line from Pioneer Pass Road to State Route 77, and south along SR 77.  The contingency group worked in the El Capitan vicinity to protect structures at risk.  Today crews will continue the burn outs along SR 77 toward El Capitan, and firefighters will patrol along SR 77, although spot fires have occurred east of SR 77 and crews will be working to contain. Fire is expected to be active in the SR 77 corridor, and crews are in place to hold fire west of the highway.  Structure protection crews will continue to use hose lays for point protection in the El Capitan area.  Evacuation status for El Capitan and Beverly Hills has been changed to “GO”. On the north side of the fire, firefighters will resume patrol and mop up of pockets of unburned fuel which flared up at Oak Flat, Top-of-the-World, and the northeast corner of the fire.  Today will be an extreme fire weather day with continued extreme conditions on the east and south flanks of the fire. We are reminding motorists to be alert for the increased presence of firefighters and large firefighting vehicles in the U.S. Route 60 corridor.  There will be a virtual community meeting every day at 6 pm on the Incident Facebook page until further notice: https://www.facebook.com/Telegraphfireinformation/.   Evacuation status for Superior, Globe, Pinto/Carlotta and the Battle Axe area is now “Ready.” Evacuation status for Top-Of-The-World, Bellevue, Oak Flat, Miami, Central Heights, Six Ice and Claypool is now “Set.” The Tonto National Forest has initiated Stage 2 Fire Restrictions for the entire forest, effective 8 a.m. on June 11. All State Land is under Stage 2 restrictions effective 8:00 a.m. on June 11. El incendio del Telégrafo vio un aumento en la actividad del fuego esta tarde debido a las temperaturas extremas y la baja humedad relativa cerca del 1 por ciento.   The Telegraph Fire saw an increase in fire activity this afternoon due to extreme temperatures and low relative humidity near 1 percent. This afternoon during burning operations a spot fire occurred that went across Pioneer Pass Road near Pioneer Pass Campground. Firefighters are working the spot fire with hand crews, dozers and engines and are assessing a burnout operation on the contingency fire line that firefighters have been preparing and improving this week.  Because of the spot fire, AZ SR 77 has been closed to the public from Globe to Winkleman.  Local traffic is still allowed on AZ SR 77 from Winkleman to El Capitan.  The contingency group will continue constructing a fire line near El Capitan, using roads, hose lays, and chainsaw crews. Monitoring and mop up of the fire perimeter along U.S. Route 60 and near the Top-of-the-World community continued today. Patrol and mop up will continue around the fire wherever necessary to protect values at risk.
