Telegraph Fire Evening Update – June 22, 2021
Acres: 180,685 Number of Personnel: 518
Percent Containment: 87% Cause: Human, under investigation
Date/Time Detected: Friday, June 4, 2021, 1:30 p.m. Origin/Location: South of Superior, Arizona
Structures burned: 52
Minimal heat was detected today as firefighters and aircraft patrolled and monitored the burned area. After about 11 p.m. tonight, firefighters will no longer patrol the fire overnight. During the day shift, crews will continue to patrol and monitor the fire for flare ups and mop up as needed to protect communities and infrastructure. Efforts to map retardant drop locations were completed will be used to inform fire rehabilitation efforts.
For the past few days, firefighters have been working on what is called ‘suppression repair’ on federal lands. What do we mean by this? Much of the containment line around the fire will have minimal impacts to resources, as it was established with hand tools, water drops, or ‘cold trailing’, where firefighters patrol for and extinguish small hot spots. In some cases, however, dozers were needed to dig a wider break that kept the fire from impacting valued resources. Suppression repair work includes efforts to rehabilitate fire lines and other areas that may have been disturbed by firefighting activities, such as helispots, or safety zones. This work includes adding water bars, chipped material, or large rocks to dozer lines to prevent erosion and restrict vehicle access, as well as flattening berms and pulling in brush that may have been impacted by heavy equipment. Firefighters work in close coordination with local resource advisors to assure that control lines and suppression repair work do not impact valued resources like cultural sites or sensitive wildlife habitat. On the Telegraph Fire, crews have been busy with suppression repair work along the U.S. Route 60 corridor and Forest Service Road 651. Suppression repair work will continue on the south end of the fire as fire activity decreases.
Evacuation status as of 5 p.m. June 22: “GO” - Dripping Springs, Wind Spirit, Hagen Ranch, Slash S Ranch, Government Springs. Evacuation status” READY” - Superior, Globe, Miami, Claypool, Central Heights, Pinto/Carlotta, Skill Center, Fairgrounds, Schulze Ranch, Ray Mine, Top-of-the-World, Bellevue, Oak Flat, Beverly Hills, Riverside, Kearny, Winkelman, Hayden, Battle Axe area, El Capitan East and West, Six Shooter and Icehouse Canyons.

Wildfires throughout the state are resulting in several road closures. Expect increased traffic along U.S. Route 60 as travelers seek out alternative routes.
Overnight, favorable conditions resulted in minimal fire growth and fire containment increased to 87%. The southeast corner of the fire on Mescal Mountain experienced scattered heat pockets. Firefighters continued to monitor the fire and potential threats to the communities along Dripping Springs Road and the State Route 77 and 177 corridors.
Today, firefighters will continue to patrol for hot spots and mop up as needed to protect communities and infrastructure. Aircraft will continue to monitor and provide support with water drops on scattered heat pockets on Mescal Mountain. Aircraft will also continue to map areas where fire retardant was dropped to inform fire rehabilitation efforts. Telegraph Fire Evening Update – June 21, 2021
Evacuation status for El Capitan East and West and Six Shooter and Icehouse Canyons changed today from “SET” to “READY”. Favorable weather conditions resulted in minimal fire growth today. Many of our resources were focused on the southeast corner of the fire on Mescal Mountain where the fire remains active. Helicopters were used to check the fire as it spread southeast into lighter grass and sparse brush. Smoke may be visible as fire continues to back down upper Kellner and Icehouse Canyons and as pockets of unburned vegetation are consumed within the fire perimeter. Firefighters continue to patrol the Ray and Troy Mine areas, as well as communities along Dripping Springs Road and State Route 177 and mop up any hot spots that may flare up.
At this stage of the fire, you may hear our team talking about “mopping up” the burned area, but what does this mean? “Mop up” refers to actions taken to extinguish or remove pockets of burning material within the fire perimeter, near control lines or values at risk, to make sure the fire does not spread outside of the contained perimeter or impact values. This can include things like breaking apart smoldering debris, felling standing dead trees that are holding heat, or using fire engines to extinguish small flare ups. Mop up is not necessary in many of the grassy fuel types in the Telegraph Fire that burn out quickly, but firefighters are utilizing these techniques when flare ups occur near values at risk.
Evacuation status as of 5 p.m. June 21: “GO” - Dripping Springs, Wind Spirit, Hagen Ranch, Slash S Ranch, Government Springs. Firefighters were challenged by high winds from the west/northwest today. Most of our resources were focused on the southeast corner of the fire where crews continued to prep along the State Route 77 corridor and around the Dripping Springs and Cooley Ranch communities. Helicopters were used to check the fire’s spread as it backs off the Mescal Mountains into lighter grasses and sparse brush to the southeast. Crews are improving holding features such as two-track roads to protect the electrical power transmission lines supplying the San Carlos Apache communities should the fire progress to the southeast. Smoke may be visible as fire backs down upper Kellner and Icehouse Canyons and as pockets of unburned vegetation are consumed within the fire perimeter. Firefighters will patrol the Ray Mine, Troy Mine areas as well as El Capitan, Dripping Springs, Cooley Ranch, Wind Spirit, Slash S Ranch and Government Springs Ranch communities and mop-up any hot spots that may flare up from today’s wind. Crews continue suppression repair work such as, brush chipping and repairing containment lines along the US60 corridor and Forest Road 651 in the Pinal Mountains and are backhauling supplies from inactive areas of the fire.
A frequent question we hear is, “what are burn out operations?” or “why do you do burn outs?” When containment/fire lines are built, firefighters need to remove the fuels (grass and brush) near the containment line to reduce the fire’s intensity. Indirect containment lines are built some distance away from the active fire edge to take advantage of existing barriers like roads or when flame lengths exceed 4 to 5 feet and it becomes unsafe to use direct tactics. If unburned fuel remains between the containment line and the fire, the line could be breached. If a fire reaches the containment line on its own, with too much intensity the fire can jump over the line. We call this a “Spot Fire”. A burn out operation is done to remove the unburned fuel between the containment line and the fire edge to reduce this potential. Burn outs allow better control over the intensity of the fire against the containment line as we can remove those fuels under more favorable conditions such as during periods of lower temperatures, winds, and higher relative humidity. A risk analysis and planning process is conducted and approved by fire managers prior to undertaking a burn out.
