JOSEPH, Ore. – Extreme winds Saturday challenged air resources battling the Joseph Canyon Fire, but also aided the suppression effort by pushing the active fire line back onto itself in some areas.

By the end of the day, the fire footprint was estimated to be 3,700 acres. The fire is burning in northern Wallowa County and southeast Washington about 23 miles southwest of Lewiston, ID.

“This is probably one of the most difficult places to fight fire in Oregon,” said Matt Howard, Deputy Agency Administrator for Oregon Department of Forestry. “Joseph Canyon is known for its extreme terrain, communications challenges, and natural hazards.”

Northwest 7 Type 2 Incident Management Team is shadowing the interagency Blue Mountain Type 3 Incident Management Team today and will assume command of the fire Monday.

Engine crews were able to establish and hold a line along 10 miles of roadway bordering the east side of Cottonwood Creek. They will continue working today to reinforce the line and contain any slop overs (areas where the fire has crossed the line).

Cooler temperatures and higher humidity today should slow the fire’s progression. Winds are expected to taper off by midday, allowing aviation resources to work aggressively to hold the fire between Cottonwood Creek and Rye Ridge.

Four hand crews, two engines and three helicopters are currently assigned to the fire. Additional aviation and ground resources are arriving steadily.

Fire personnel from Oregon Department of Forestry, Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, Vale Bureau of Land Management and Washington Department of Natural Resources are working cooperatively to protect public and private lands affected by the fire.

Several ranchers and permittees were moving cattle out of the fire zone to protect the livestock and allow firefighters unrestricted access into and around the fire footprint.

“The private landowners involved are no stranger to fire,” Howard said. “We have good communication with them and, given the circumstances, they are happy with the progress that has been made in battling this wildfire.”

[Joseph, Ore.]  Lightning activity from thunderstorms passing through the area Thursday night and Friday morning ignited multiple wildfires in the northeast corner of the state. Responding resources have successfully contained some of the ignitions, however others remain active and uncontained.

The Joseph Canyon Fire, initially reported Friday morning by Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR), is burning in steep rugged terrain in the Joseph Canyon area of northern Wallowa County, Oregon. Low humidity, warm temperatures, and breezy winds hampered firefighting efforts Friday and the fire rapidly spread through the grassy vegetation within the canyon and crossed over the state line into Washington. The fire continued to burn actively overnight in the flashy fuels and is estimated to be approximately 2,000 acres.

The fire is burning on lands protected by the Oregon Department of Forestry and Bureau of Land Management. A local interagency Type 3 team will shadow firefighters today and transition management of the fire to the team at 6 p.m. tonight. 

A second fire, Dry Creek, is burning just to the east of the Joseph Canyon Fire.  It is estimated to be 328 acres and is located solely on Wallowa-Whitman National Forest land.

All jurisdictions involved share common objectives in managing these fires, which is to fight the fires aggressively while maximizing the safety of the public and all fire staff involved. Due to the remote location and steep rugged terrain, the fires are mostly being fought by air attack. Rappelers, smoke jumpers and air tankers were brought in for initial suppression efforts. Three large airtankers dropped retardant along the perimeter of the Joseph Canyon Fire Friday to slow the fire growth.  In addition to firefighter delivery, three Type 2 helicopters were used to drop water on hot spots.  These aerial resources will continue to support firefighters on the ground today, as well as the addition of Single Engine Air Tankers. Active fire behavior is expected today with low humidity and increasing winds as a cold front passes through.

El Equipo 6 de Manejo de Incidentes del Noroeste transferirá el comando del incendio de Telegraph  

Ayer, las cuadrillas de bomberos continuaron con un progreso significativo con los esfuerzos de reparación de la extinción, incluida la rehabilitación de las líneas de control de incendios a lo largo del corredor de U.S. Route 60 y cerca de El Capitán, y con el transporte del equipo utilizado para combatir el incendio. Northwest Incident Management Team 6 To Transfer Command of the Telegraph Fire  

Yesterday crews continued to make significant progress with suppression repair efforts, including rehabilitating fire control lines along the U.S. Route 60 corridor and near El Capitan and backhauling firefighting equipment. Isolated hot spots continued to smolder in Icehouse Canyon, on the south side of Mescal Mountain, and north of Dripping Springs. Firefighters continued to monitor for flare ups and utilize crews and aircraft as necessary to prevent fire spread. With increased chances of monsoonal moisture entering the area this week, residents near the burned area should be prepared for potential post-fire flash flooding.   

This is the last daily update from the Northwest Incident Management Team 6.  Incident Commander Shawn Sheldon extends his Incident Management Team’s sincere appreciation to all the communities in Pinal and Gila counties impacted by the Telegraph Fire. Reducción de la restricción temporal de vuelos sobre el área y apertura de los aeropuertos de Globe y Cutter

Hoy, las cuadrillas de bomberos continuarán con las actividades de extinción, que incluyen transporte de equipo utilizado para combatir el incendio y la rehabilitación de las líneas de control de incendios a lo largo del corredor de U.S. Route 60. Las cuadrillas también trabajarán para retirar árboles muertos que representan un peligro en Pinal Mountain. Aún había humo visible, dado que algunos puntos calientes aislados continuaron ardiendo en Icehouse Canyon. Se espera que estos puntos calientes sigan extendiéndose y ardiendo hasta que ocurra un evento pluvial que moje la zona. Temporary flight restriction reduced over the area, opening the Globe and Cutter airports

Today crews will continue with suppression repair efforts, including backhauling firefighting equipment and rehabilitating fire control lines along the U.S. Route 60 corridor and near El Capitan. Crews will also work to remove standing dead trees that pose a hazard on Pinal Mountain. Smoke was still visible as isolated hot spots continued to smolder in Icehouse Canyon. These hot spots are expected to continue to creep and smolder until the area experiences a wetting rainfall event. The temporary flight restriction over the area was reduced in size, allowing for the Globe and Cutter airports to reopen. Light fire activity continues and crews work on suppression repair in advance of forecasted rain

Yesterday crews continued to make significant progress with suppression repair efforts, including rehabilitating fire control lines along the U.S. Route 60 corridor and near El Capitan and backhauling firefighting equipment. Isolated hot spots continued to smolder in Icehouse Canyon, on the south side of Mescal Mountain, and along Dripping Springs Road. Firefighters continued to monitor for flare ups and utilize crews and aircraft as necessary to prevent fire spread. With forecasted hotter temperatures and lower relative humidity over the weekend, these hot spots are expected to continue to creep and smolder. This light fire activity will likely continue until the area experiences a wetting rainfall event. The Incident Management Team continued to support firefighting efforts throughout Arizona by sending resources to other active incidents, such as the Rafael and Backbone Fires. Crews will remain available to patrol and monitor for hot spots and for initial attack, should new fire starts appear in the area.  

Chances of rain increase throughout the area starting Monday, which may increase the threat of soil erosion, debris flows, and flash flooding from the burned area. The Interagency Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) specialists recently completed their data gathering and analysis for the Telegraph and Mescal burned areas to produce a soil burned severity map. This map displays areas within the fire perimeter in categories of unburned/low, moderate, and high burn severity. El Bosque Nacional Tonto y el Departamento de Silvicultura y Manejo de Incendios de Arizona implementan cierres, con vigencia a partir de hoy a las 8:00 a. m.

Ayer, la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Gila cambió el estado de evacuación de las siguientes áreas de “ESTAR LISTOS” a “PREPARARSE”: Dripping Springs, Wind Spirit, Slash S Ranch y Government Springs. Las cuadrillas de bomberos lograron un progreso significativo con los esfuerzos de reparación de la extinción, incluida la rehabilitación de las líneas de control de incendios a lo largo del corredor de U.S. Route 60 y cerca de El Capitán, y con el transporte del equipo utilizado en los esfuerzos para combatir el incendio. Los bomberos continuaron monitoreando las zonas activas dispersas cerca de Tuxedo Junction y utilizando cuadrillas y aviones según necesidad para evitar la propagación del fuego.
