SILVER CITY –The Southwest Team 4 for the Black Fire has announced the NM 152 roadway reopening.

NM 152 from mileposts 40 (Kingston) to milepost 15 (San Lorenzo) is scheduled to be reopened on Saturday, June 18 at 6:00 a.m. Please continue to use caution in the area.

Puntos importantes: gracias a los esfuerzos exitosos de extinción, el incendio Black ahora tiene una contención de 50%. Se han fortalecido las líneas de contención adicionales desde Hermosa al sur hasta Round Mountain y Animas Creek en el extremo este. Operaciones: debido al trabajo duro y constante de los bomberos durante los turnos de día y noche, la contención ha mejorado en varios lugares alrededor del área del incendio. Los bomberos trabajan a lo largo del borde norte para rehabilitar los cortafuego que se crearon mientras se extinguía el fuego en esta área. Highlights: Thanks to successful firefighting efforts, the Black Fire is now 50% contained. Additional containment lines have been secured from Hermosa running south to Round Mountain and Animas Creek on the east side. On the west side, containment lines have been established in the Bloodgood Place going south to Kelly Mesa.

Operations: Due to the steady, hard work of firefighters during the day and night shifts, additional containment has been added in multiple locations around the fire area. Firefighters are working along the northern perimeter to rehabilitate the fire lines that were created while suppressing the fire in this area. Under the guidance of local Resource Advisors, firefighters are completing this repair work to help return the land back to its natural state. The “slopover” located near the Bloodgood Place is in steep drainages which makes it difficult to access, but firefighters have been able to halt further movement using water dropped from helicopters. Chipping operations are ongoing in the North Percha area to remove excess vegetation for structure protection and to help widen the roads in case the fire moves in this direction. After these operations are complete, the remaining wood chips are being removed from the fire area and transported to the firefighter’s base camp along Highway 152 east of Hillsboro to help reduce dust. As conditions allow, firefighters have been slowly applying fire in strategic locations along the southern perimeter to remove vegetation ahead of the main fire, slowing fire movement and reducing fire intensity. Firefighters are using aircraft to patrol and monitor the fire from 1,000 feet above ground level. Conducting these reconnaissance flights allows fire managers to collect data from the entire fire area, including locations that are inaccessible on foot. Although rain is falling in several areas of the fire, thunderstorms bring an increased chance of new lightning-caused fires. Crews assigned to the Black Fire are prepared to respond to any new fire starts located within the area designated for initial attack.

Weather: Increasing moisture and thunderstorm chances are expected through the weekend, with the thunderstorms transitioning from dry to wet. Heavy rainfall from these thunderstorms may result in flash flooding in and around the burned area, mainly on Sunday and Monday. Increasing cloud cover, cooler daytime temperatures, and higher humidity levels are expected through the weekend.

Closures: Highway 152 is currently closed from milepost 40 (Kingston) to milepost 15 (San Lorenzo). No public entry is allowed. A portion of the Gila National Forest affected by the fire has been closed.

Operaciones: como resultado de los esfuerzos exitosos de extinción, ahora el borde norte está mejor controlado cerca de Lookout Mountain. Highlights: The Southwest Area Type 2 Incident Management Team 4 will host a community meeting tonight, Thursday, June 16, at 6:00 PM at the Hillsboro Community Center, 316 Elenora Street in Hillsboro, NM.

Operations: Successful firefighting efforts have resulted in additional containment along the northern perimeter of the fire near Lookout Mountain. Aerial resources are assisting firefighters on the ground by dropping water on hot spots, conducting reconnaissance missions, and strategically igniting vegetation to reduce fire intensity. A helicopter dropped additional water buckets on the 40-acre “slopover” to cool the fire inside the control line. As it continues to move through the Gila Wilderness, the fire is most active in a deep drainage near Hillsboro Lookout within the 2013 Silver Fire burned area. After securing the protective wrap around the historic Hillsboro cabin, firefighters used aerial ignitions to slowly consume fuel between the edge of the advancing fire and the metal lookout tower. These operations produced a low intensity fire that successfully created a protective buffer around the Hillsboro Lookout. In Kingston, firefighters installed 60 sprinkler kits to help protect this community by wetting the area and raising the humidity levels surrounding the structures. Nightshift crews are also clearing excess vegetation around structures in case the fire moves in this direction. Firefighters are working in Ladder Ranch to repair the evidence of suppression activities where fire line was constructed as a contingency measure. New Mexico Highway 152 will remain closed due to the active fire behavior near Hillsboro Lookout. Firefighter and public safety continue to be the highest priority over all other incident objectives.

Weather: Enough moisture moves back into the area this afternoon for a chance of dry thunderstorms. The thunder threat will last well into the nighttime hours tonight. Increasing thunderstorm chances are expected through the weekend as the storms transition from dry to more wet. Expect breezy southeast winds through Sunday. Heavy rain from thunderstorms may result in flash flood risk over the weekend.

Pursuant to 16 U.S.C. § 551 and 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(a) and (b), the following acts are prohibited within all National Forest System lands as described in this Order (the “Restricted Area”) hereby incorporated into this Order as Exhibit A, within the Gila National Forest, Catron, Grant, Hidalgo and Sierra Counties within the State of New Mexico.

Prohibitions include (but are not limited to) fire including charcoal and briquettes, smoking, welding and open flames, and vehicles. Chainsaws and similar equipment are restricted to certain hours. 

In the amended order, the use of any open flame including camp stoves and flammable gel canisters is now prohibited. Additionally, only generators with spark arrestors within a three-foot cleared diameter can be operated. All previous restrictions apply.

This order is effective from May 24 until Dec. 31.

Puntos importantes: a través del día y la noche los bomberos trabajarán en condiciones climáticas muy secas para extinguir completamente el incendio Black Se espera que el clima cambie para el fin de la semana a medida que las tormentas eléctricas traerán humedad al área del incendio.

Operaciones: por causa de los vientos fuertes y la topografía, el fuego se desplazó hacia el sureste en el área de Sids Prong y Holden Prong. Cerca de BloodGood Place, los bomberos lograron controlar de manera exitosa un “derrame” de 40 acres donde el fuego cruzó una línea de topadoras que ya existía. Continúan las actividades de extinción en Seco Creek, Round Mountain y Animas Creek. Las cuadrillas están preparándose para proteger las estructuras en Kingston al instalar rociadores, eliminar el exceso de vegetación y usar equipos especializados llamados "astilladoras" para desbaratar la vegetación en pequeñas astillas de madera. Más al este, los bomberos están evaluando estructuras en Hillsboro. En la esquina suroeste del incendio, están construyendo líneas de control con herramientas manuales y topadoras mientras que los helicópteros vierten agua sobre el fuego. Las gotas de agua ayudan a refrenar la propagación del fuego y enfriar la temperatura del mismo, lo que da a los bomberos más tiempo para trabajar de manera segura a lo largo del borde del incendio. Los recursos de aviación están vigilando la parte norte por aire, ya que estas líneas de contención se han sostenido por varios días. Los bomberos que ingresaron en rápel al área del incendio por helicóptero han completado su tarea de extinguir los focos de calor alrededor de Lookout Mountain. Durante el turno de noche, los bomberos utilizan sistemas aéreos no tripulados (UAS) para obtener información infrarroja, realizar misiones de reconocimiento y completar quemas aéreas para eliminar combustibles y así frenar la propagación del incendio, según sea necesario.

Clima: hoy habrá condiciones secas, temperaturas cálidas, baja humedad y vientos racheados. El jueves por la tarde volverá a ver suficiente humedad de nuevo en el área lo que resultará en la posibilidad de tormentas eléctricas secas. Se pronostica un aumento en las posibilidades de tormentas eléctricas el fin de semana a medida que estas se ponen más húmedas. De jueves a sábado se esperan vientos ventosos del este-sureste.

Very dry weather conditions test the Black Fire

Highlights: Firefighters are working in very dry weather conditions throughout the day and night to fully suppress the Black Fire. The weather is expected to shift later this week as thunderstorms bring moisture into the fire area.

Operations: Due to high winds and topography, the fire advanced toward the southeast in the Sids Prong and Holden Prong area. Near BloodGood Place, firefighters successfully contained a 40-acre “slopover” where the fire crossed over an existing dozer line. Firefighters continue suppression activities near Seco Creek, Round Mountain, and Animas Creek. Crews are preparing to protect structures in Kingston by installing sprinklers, removing excess vegetation, and using specialized equipment called “chippers” to break down cut vegetation into small wood chips. Further east, firefighters are completing structure assessments in Hillsboro. In the southwest corner of the fire area, firefighters are building control lines using hand tools and bulldozers while helicopters drop water on the fire. Water drops help to delay fire spread and cool the temperature of the fire, giving firefighters more time to safely work along the fire’s edge. Aviation resources are monitoring the northern part of the fire by air as these containment lines have held for multiple days. Firefighters who rappelled into the fire area by helicopter have completed their task of extinguishing hot spots around Lookout Mountain. During the night shift, firefighters are using Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) to obtain infrared information, conduct reconnaissance missions, and complete aerial ignitions to remove fuels to slow the progression of the fire, as needed.

Weather: Dry conditions, hot temperatures, low humidity, and gusty winds will occur today. Enough moisture moves back into the area on Thursday afternoon for a chance of dry thunderstorms. The forecast predicts increasing thunderstorms chances through the weekend as the storms transition from dry to more wet. Expect breezy east-southeast winds Thursday through Saturday.

Closures: Highway 152 is currently closed from milepost 40 (Kingston) to milepost 15 (San Lorenzo). No public entry is allowed. A portion of the Gila National Forest affected by the fire has been closed.

Safety: The health and safety of firefighters and the public is always the top priority. Members of the public should stay away from Black Fire operations. A Temporary Flight Restriction is in place over the Black Fire area, which includes unmanned aircraft, or drones. Smoke: Smoke from the Black Fire may be visible in the surrounding areas of Mimbres, Kingston, Hillsboro, and San Lorenzo, NM.
