Cedar Creek Fire Update Aug 25
Related Incident: Cedar Creek Fire
Publication Type: News
Current Situation: Ground operations on the south and southeastern portion of the fire continued to be supported by helicopter water drops. Handcrews in Waldo Lake Wilderness completed a quarter mile of fireline to the west using primarily water from small streams. Heavy equipment crews continue building a fireline east from Koch Road along the fire’s edge toward the wilderness with a goal of joining both the hand and equipment line. Timber sawyers and heavy equipment are making progress removing fire-weakened trees from Black Creek Road for firefighter safety and continued access. Handcrews continue improving Fuji Mountain trail as an alternate fireline while heavy equipment crews improved Eagle Creek Road (#5853) with the goal to tie these lines together. Firefighters are improving Forest Road 2023, with the goal of slowing fire spread to the west. On the Slapjack Fire, operations move into mop up within the perimeter of 8.7 acres.
Today’s Activities: Increased fire activity is anticipated with higher temperatures; however, fire spread should be minimal with the light winds. Helicopters will continue providing water bucket drops for fire suppression and logistical support to firefighters. Hand crews in Waldo Lake Wilderness will continue building fireline along to the fire’s edge, moving southwest toward Edith Creek. Heavy equipment will continue building direct fireline from Koch Road moving east toward the wilderness boundary. Timber fellers and heavy equipment continue assisting fire crews with removing hazard trees from Black Creek Road to establish safe ingress and egress. On the Slapjack fire, mop up will continue with an eye toward suppression repair.
Evacuations: Currently, there are no evacuations in place.
Weather: Fire activity may be more active today with temperatures expected to be in the mid-90s, however, light winds should provide for minimal fire growth.
Closures: An expanded Area Closure is in place as of August 23rd for the Cedar Creek Fire. This includes all trailheads and dispersed camping west and north of Waldo Lake. The lake, campgrounds, and trails (including the PCT) on the east side remain open. A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place. Huckleberry Flats OHV Park will be open Friday August 26, 2022. Please yield to fire crews and equipment that may be in the area.
Restrictions: Fire restrictions are in place on the Willamette National Forest with the exception of the Three Sisters, Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Washington, Waldo Lake, and Diamond Peak Wilderness areas.

Current Situation: Continued helicopter water drops on the southeast portion, cooled the fire in the location of the planned handline to be completed through wilderness. These cooling efforts slowed fire growth and enable firefighters to safely work in the area. Crews camped on the west side of Waldo Lake, near trail #3590 just outside of the eastern boundary of Waldo Lake Wilderness and are working to establish direct fireline as close to the fire’s edge as possible to stop spread to the south. Along Black Creek Road crews and heavy equipment removed fire weakened trees that have fallen or have the potential to fall, to provide for firefighter firefighter safety and continued access. Four miles south of the fire, hand crews are improving the trail moving west from Fuji Mountain Trailhead toward Eagle Creek Road. Hand crews on the Slapjack Fire completed the fireline and hose lay and the fire has been holding within the established fireline
Today’s Activities: Helicopters will continue bucket drops for fire suppression and logistical support, assisting firefighters where needed. Hand crews on the east side of the fire will continue establishing a fireline close to the fire’s edge, moving southwest toward Edith Creek. Minimal impact suppression tactics will be used within the wilderness. Heavy equipment crews will build direct fireline from Black Creek Road moving east toward the western edge of the wilderness boundary. The goal of these actions is to tie together this east-west fireline as close to the fire’s edge as possible. Additional timber fellers and heavy equipment will assist crews with removing hazard trees from Black Creek Road to establish safe ingress and egress. These same tactics will be used to open Forest Roads #2422 and the #2022 spur. A timber feller is a highly skilled sawyer that drops hazardous, unstable, trees that pose significant dangers to fire crews working in the area. Fireline construction along the #1928 road and further south to State Highway 58 will continue for several days. On the Slapjack fire, firefighters will begin extinguishing heat they find to further secure the fire perimeter.
Huckleberry Flats OHV Park is closed to provide access for firefighters and equipment working within the area.
Restrictions: Fire restrictions are in place on the Willamette National Forest with the exception of the Three Sisters, Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Washington, Waldo Lake, and Diamond Peak Wilderness areas.

Cedar Creek Fire Update August 22
Related Incident: Cedar Creek Fire
Publication Type: News
Current Situation: Cedar Creek Fire was active within the perimeter Sunday afternoon due to the higher-than-normal temperature and lower relative humidity. Helicopters were busy most of the day cooling hot spots with water drops as smoke columns could be seen across Waldo Lake and Hills Creek Reservoir. Careful aerial firing within Waldo Lake Wilderness continued in the unburned area between the eastern tip of the fire and the lake in preparation for hand crew operations. Night crews continued firing operations north on Black Creek Road. Heavy equipment crews continued improving roads and trails to the south and west of the fire as alternate lines.
Today’s Activities: Today handcrews will assess a safe location to establish a spike camp for firefighters and equipment on the east side of the fire along the western edge of Waldo Lake within the Waldo Lake Wilderness. Once located, they will establish camp and use helicopters to sling in pumps and water hoses and personal protective gear to establish a fireline line south toward Edith Creek using tactics that suppress the fire close to the fire’s edge with minimal impact to the wilderness. Tactics will include utilizing small pumps and hoses and local water sources along with some handline for the suppression efforts. Heavy equipment crews continue improving primary and secondary firelines on roads throughout the fire area. Fireline construction along Forest Roads 1928 and further south to State Highway 58 will continue for several days. Firecrews and helicopters continue suppression on the 5-acre Slapjack fire with fireline construction and a small access road.
Huckleberry Flats OHV Park is closed to provide access for firefighters and equipment working within the area.
