Community Meeting Today August 30th at 6:00PM ~ Greenwaters Park Community Building

Community Meeting: A community meeting will be held Today, August 30th, 6:00PM at Greenwaters Park Community Building, 48362 Highway 58, Oakridge, Oregon. For those unable to attend in person, the meeting will be streamed live on the Cedar Creek Fire Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/CedarCreekFire2022.

Current Situation: Helicopters were successful in completing a critical segment of fireline by dropping retardant on an inaccessible ridge outside of the Wilderness east of Edith Creek drainage. Retardant, once its dries becomes less effective but can be rehydrated from water drops and becomes almost as effective as when originally applied. Helicopter operations may be visible to visitors at the Salt Creek Falls Day Use Area and to motorists on HWY 58. Please observe and adhere to directional signage in the area. Downsizing of crews and equipment has started where work has been completed. An appropriate number of resources to manage the fire for community, firefighter, and natural resource safety will be maintained. On the Slapjack Fire, firefighters are gridding, walking strategically in burned areas spaced out in a line to find and extinguish pockets of heat. Crews are also focusing on suppression repair by doing activities like adding water bars to firelines which prevent sedimentation in preparation for seasonal rains.

Today’s Activities: Crews are constructing direct hand line along the southeast flank of the fire connecting the fire edge that reached Waldo Lake with dozer line outside of the wilderness. Burn operations continue along the southwest edge of the fire tying into the 2421 road. Fire activity has the potential to increase today driven by hot, dry, and unstable weather. Smoke columns maybe visible today as the fire consumes unburned interior vegetation. On alternate lines south of the  fire crews are working on chipping and removing debris from culverts.

Evacuations: Currently, there are no evacuations in place.

Weather: A red flag warning is in place today for hot and dry conditions with temperatures in the 90s.  East to north west winds 3-6 mph, gusts to 12mph in the afternoon. Humidity below 20%.

Closures: An expanded Area Closure is in place as of August 23rd for the Cedar Creek Fire. This includes all trailheads and dispersed camping west and north of Waldo Lake. The lake, campgrounds, and trails (including the PCT) on the east side remain open. A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place.

Restrictions: Fire restrictions are in place on the Willamette National Forest with the exception of the Three Sisters, Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Washington, Waldo Lake, and Diamond Peak Wilderness areas.

Smoke Oakridge may have some smoke in the morning again with downslope air flowing down the Salmon Creek drainage. In the afternoon light winds flowing up-valley will likely result in smoke production enough to affect areas east the fire. Waldo Lake may have fairly heavy smoke in the afternoon into the night if smoke near the surface of the fire does not get much lift like what happened on Monday. Crater Lake may receive some smoke from the Rum Creek fire to the southwest. Other locations further from the fire should not be affected by smoke from this fire.
Health and Safety Message Most healthy adults and children will recover quickly from wildfire smoke exposure. Community Meeting: A community meeting will be held Tuesday August 30th at 6:00PM at Greenwaters Park Community Building, 48362 Highway 58, Oakridge, Oregon. For those unable to attend, the meeting will be streamed live on the Cedar Creek Fire Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/CedarCreekFire2022

Current Situation: Observed fire behavior was creeping and smoldering on Saturday and there was limited fire growth thanks to cooler temperatures and higher humidity. Crews have been working to establish fireline from the west shore of Waldo Lake to the western edge of the Wilderness boundary. One snag fell across Edith Creek and crews were successful in extinguishing the resulting spot fire and held the fire west of Edith Creek. Fireline has been completed along FS Road 5883.  Crews have been mopping up and patrolling Black Creek Road (FS Road 2421) day and night to keep the fire north of the road. Slapjack Fire is 100% contained; suppression repair including erosion control and backhauling equipment is ongoing.

Today’s Activities: A mobile retardant batch plant (MRB) is in place near Salt Creek Falls. The MRB supplies helicopters with fire retardant to be dropped within a strategic location outside of wilderness and near Edith Creek to tie fireline together on terrain that is not accessible to firefighters on the ground. Helicopters will be visible to motorists on HWY 58 and visitors at the Salt Creek Falls Day Use Area when air operations are active. Please yield to fire crews and adhere to safety, directional signage in this area. On FS Roads 2422 and 2243 check lines are being constructed with the intent of holding the fire to a smaller footprint. Crews are scouting for and improving alternate firelines on spur roads off FS Road 5883. On Slapjack, crews are finalizing erosion control and backhauling equipment in anticipation of turning management of the fire back to the local agency.

Evacuations: Currently, there are no evacuations in place.

Weather: Seasonable weather conditions are expected today; 70-75 degrees, relative humidity 38-85%, winds out of the northwest, 3-5 mph gusting to 12 mph

Closures: An expanded Area Closure is in place as of August 23rd for the Cedar Creek Fire. This includes all trailheads and dispersed camping west and north of Waldo Lake. Cedar Creek Fire Update Aug 27

Related Incident: Cedar Creek Fire
Publication Type: News

Current Situation: Calm weather and fire behavior have provided windows of opportunity for fire suppression. In the Waldo Lake Wilderness firefighters are building direct fireline using minimum impact suppression tactics (MIST) from Waldo Lake westward. Outside the wilderness boundary, bulldozers are working southeast from Koch Road toward Edith Creek. Spirit Lake spike camp was established outside of the wilderness for crews building direct line along the east flank. Helicopters continue to support ground operations with bucket drops and supply sling loads to spike camps. Firing operations were successful along portions of Black Creek Road removing fuels between the road and the approaching fire. Timber fallers continue to remove hazard trees along the remainder of Black Creek Road. Slapjack fire is at 100% containment with mop up and suppression repairs underway.

Today’s Activities: Cooler temperatures will continue to aid suppression activities by reducing fire behavior. In the Waldo Lake Wilderness, crews will continue to establish and improve fireline. Pumps have been placed in the Edith Creek Drainage where crews will patrol for hot spots. Brushing and chipping will take place on FS Road 2422 to create an additional access point and control line, and mastication will continue on FS 5883. Crews on Slapjack will transition from mop up to suppression repair.

Evacuations: Currently, there are no evacuations in place.

Weather: Cooler weather and higher relative humidity today should moderate fire activity.

Cedar Creek Fire Update Aug 26

Related Incident: Cedar Creek Fire
Publication Type: News

Current Situation: Fire crews in Waldo Lake Wilderness completed one half mile of fireline to the west primarily using water from small streams. Two additional hotshot crews were inserted in the wilderness to assist in constructing this key piece of handline. Heavy equipment continued building direct fireline to the east from Koch Road toward the wilderness with a goal of joining both the hand and equipment lines. Timber sawyers continued cutting hazard trees along Black Creek Road making it safer for firefighters and heavy equipment to continue fire suppression operations. Helicopters were actively supporting fire crews with bucket drops to cool the fire along the southern and southeastern flanks. About four miles of handline construction on Fuji Mountain Trail is completed. Heavy equipment crews continued improving Eagle Creek Road (#5853) as an alternate fireline. Heavy equipment operators completed much of the alternate fireline on Forest Road #1928 and moved equipment out of Huckleberry Flats OHV recreation area. Firefighters improved Forest Road #2023, just west of the fire’s edge to support containment efforts. On the 8.7-acre Slapjack Fire, crews have been mopping up throughout the fire perimeter.

Today’s Activities: Today begins a transition in weather to cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity which should slow fire activity. Helicopters will support fire crews in suppression operations with bucket drops and logistical needs with sling-loading equipment and gear. Three fire crews in Waldo Lake Wilderness will continue constructing direct fireline along the southeastern flank. Heavy equipment continues to build fireline from Koch Road to the east toward the Wilderness boundary. Timber fallers and heavy equipment will stay ahead of fire crews removing hazard trees from Black Creek Road. On the Slapjack fire, crews will continue mop up and gridding the fireline. When mopping up, firefighters use hand tools and water to mix dirt, cooling hot embers near the line. To detect any unseen heat remaining, firefighters pass over the area of loose dirt with the back of their bare hand, then work the area again until it is cooled.

Huckleberry Flats OHV Park is open today from both the north and south entrances.

Evacuations: Currently, there are no evacuations in place.

Weather: Cooler weather and higher relative humidity today should moderate fire activity.
