Cedar Creek Fire Update September 3 2022
Related Incident: Cedar Creek Fire
Publication Type: News
Current Situation:
Fire growth has increased toward Furnish Creek in the northern area of the fire. The fire spotted over the retardant line in the southeast area of the fire near Nettle Creek. The north section burned into an older burn scar. Last night, relative humidities recovered well, this combined with lingering clouds throughout the morning will help the fire be less active because of higher moisture levels in the atmosphere. Once the sun comes out in the afternoon fire activity will increase but growth is anticipated to be less than yesterday.
Today’s Activities:
The northern part of the fire reached an area that is safer to staff today. Fire crews are making deliberate choices on engaging the fire where chances of success are high. In the southwest area of the fire crews will be holding the fire along roads and fire lines. Holding means to watch out for any spot fires across fireline and extinguish them. Operations will also consider burning back into the fire where feasible. Helicopters will be helping with water drops when visibility allows.
Evacuations: Increased fire activity has prompted an increase in evacuation levels for areas around the Cedar Creek Fire.
LEVEL 3 (GO NOW) is in effect for
• Islet Campground, North Waldo Campground and Harralson Horse Camp.
Related Incident: Cedar Creek Fire
Publication Type: News
Current Situation:
Please be aware of fire traffic and holiday traffic over the Labor Day Weekend. Drive slowly and do not impede fire traffic. Yesterday, the inversion layer over the fire did not lift. The inversion layer trapped airflow causing smoke to stay in the area. The fire continues to be active with most activity in the northeast section. There was a small spot fire across the southeast line of the fire. Crews were able to respond and work on extinguishing it with the help of helicopter water drops. Waldo Fire Lookout was successfully checked on and rewrapped with protective material (structure wrap) as a part of point protection strategy on the northern area of the fire. Point protection means to protect a significant building or specific area by putting fireline around or using structure wrap should fire burn towards it.
Resource availability and weather over the course of this fire have allowed fire managers to execute successful suppression strategies like the helicopters applying fire-retardant east of Edith Creek drainage, connecting firelines, and preparing alternate, and contingency lines. Being able to execute these strategies means fire mangers are positioned to continue suppression efforts when conditions create changes to fire behavior.
Today’s Activities:
On the Koch Mountain and Waldo Lake side of the fire, crews are working on mopping up by extinguishing hot spots with water and dirt, while also securing their line by removing impeding vegetation. They will continue to work on the small spot fire by digging handline around it and may have assistance from helicopter water drops if visibility allows. On the northeast section of the fire, fire managers are considering natural features like drainages and rocky slopes to slow fire growth. Operations personnel are focused on developing tactics and strategies that have the greatest chance for success while providing for the safety of firefighters and communities. Evacuations: Lane County Sheriff’s Office has initiated a Level 1, Be Ready Evacuation, for North Waldo Campground, Islet Campground, and Charlton Lake Trail Head. Level 1, means to take personal responsibility to be ready for a wildfire, become familiar with area roads, including exit routes from your immediate area, and stay informed of the current situation. Pay attention to Lane County Sheriff’s Office for updates. Weather: Hot, and dry conditions with temperatures in the upper 90s. Humidity below 20%. Closures: An expanded Area Closure is in place as of August 23rd for the Cedar Creek Fire. This includes all trailheads and dispersed camping west and north of Waldo Lake. The lake, campgrounds, and trails (including the PCT) on the east side remain open. A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place.
Restrictions: Fire restrictions are in place on the Willamette National Forest with the exception of the Three Sisters, Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Washington, Waldo Lake, and Diamond Peak Wilderness areas.

Cedar Creek Fire Update Sept 1
Related Incident: Cedar Creek Fire
Publication Type: News
Current Situation: Weather caused the fire to be active yesterday. As the inversion lifted in the afternoon, it opened the atmosphere allowing increased airflow, combined with hot and dry conditions, fire behavior increased. Activity is expected to be less today because the atmosphere is anticipated to be more stable. Smoke will continue to be visible in nearby communities. Visit https://www.airnow.gov/ for air quality information and real-time smoke map.
Today’s Activities: Firefighters are preparing hand dug fireline connecting it to a road near Alice Creek on the west side of the fire. This handline will allow firefighters to consider igniting vegetation between them and where the fire is burning. Burning back into the fire consumes burnable vegetation and allows firefighters to have more control over where the fire can burn. This strategy is being used to allow firefighters to identify safe access points where they can still suppress the fire. Chipping continues in the northwest alternate lines of the fire with plans to move south as work is completed. Crews are also working on enhancing firelines by removing trees and other impeding vegetation near the Koch Mountain and the Waldo Lake side of the fire. On the west side of Black Creek, firefighters are working on connecting the north end of the fire-retardant line to handline.
The Slapjack Fire work has been completed and the local agency will be taking over management of the fire. This will be the last update on this fire.

Related Incident: Cedar Creek Fire
Publication Type: News
Pacific Northwest Team 3 will be transitioning to Northwest Team 6 today
Current Situation Hot, dry, and unstable conditions contributed to increased fire activity, with the fire increasing by approximately 600 acres, primarily on the northeast section of the fire. Smoke columns were visible in the afternoon throughout the surrounding area. Helicopters and crews worked throughout the day to further secure the fireline on the south edge of the fire. Helicopters applied additional retardant to the line established the previous day and crews completed and secured a hand line connecting the retardant line to the fireline along Black Creek Road. Most of the prep work on alternate lines further from the fire edge has been completed.
Today’s Activities: At 6:00 pm today, Pacific Northwest Team 3 will transition management of the Cedar Creek fire to Northwest Team 6. Spending a day transitioning ensures all knowledge is shared and management of the fire is continuous.
Hot, dry, unstable conditions are anticipated again today which may increase fire activity and result in visible smoke columns. Helicopters will continue to maintain the fire-retardant line located near Edith Creek by adding water and more retardant as needed as conditions allow. Crews will continue securing the fire line from Black Creek Road to the fire-retardant line near Edith Creek, which will increase its resilience in stopping fire spread to the south. They will also continue working to develop lines to slow or “check” fire spread closer to the fire on the northwest edge. On alternate lines north of the fire, crews will be cleaning up with chipping and backhaul of equipment. South of the fire, crews will be completing prep with mastication and log hauling and will be cleaning up with chipping and backhaul. A large chipper will be operating northwest of the fire to address slash piles created from road prep activities. Firefighters will continue to assess whether any actions are needed to protect structures like Waldo Lookout, which was previously wrapped with fire-resistant material.
The 8.7 acre Slapjack Fire is 100% contained and crews are backhauling any excess equipment.
Evacuations: Currently, there are no evacuations in place.
Weather: Hot, dry, and unstable conditions with temperatures in the 90s. Humidity below 20%.
