Margarita Fire Daily Update August 6
Related Incident: Margarita Fire
Publication Type: News
(MOCLIPS, Wash.) – The Margarita Fire started August 2nd at approximately 12:30am on the Quinault reservation, approximately 1.5 miles NE of Moclips. It is mostly burning in a timber sale unit that is a mix of cedar slash and standing trees, surrounded by heavy timber. Western Washington Type 3 Incident Management Team assumed command of the fire on August 4th.
The fire is currently 61 acres and 20% contained. The reduction in acreage since yesterday is due to improved mapping. Crews yesterday completed fire line around the entire fire perimeter. Containment is a measure of overall progress toward a fully controlled fire. Containment of the fire will continue to increase in the coming days as firefighters continue to mop up, remove snags, and remove burnable materials inside the fire area. Mop up is extinguishing or removing burning material near fire lines, felling snags, and trenching logs to prevent rolling after an area has burned. The most secure section of the fire is along the west and north edges.
The objective today is to continue mopping up and improving fire lines. Additional firefighting crews and equipment arrived yesterday and will continue work through the day and night. They will lay in more water hoses and focus on mop up efforts along the south side of the fire. This ongoing work will reduce the likelihood that fire will be able to cross established fire lines, and will help to reduce residual smoke.
The only evacuation warning is a Level 2 – Get Set – for the community of Quinault Village, also known as Moclips Estates. Residents should have essentials packed and be ready to go if conditions change.
Weather today is expected to be mostly cloudy with a slight chance of light rain overnight. The high temperature is forecast to be 59 degrees. Winds will be out of the northwest at 8-13 mph.
You can support firefighting efforts by making your home Firewise. This includes clearing defensible space near any buildings on the property. For more information see https://www.dnr.wa.gov/firewise

Tracking Smoke from the American Mesa Fire
Related Incident: American Mesa Fire
Publication Type: News
With the wildfires come smoke. Strengthening wind is currently pushing smoke from the American Mesa Fire to the east, which may affect areas along the New Mexico-Colorado border and as far south as Dulce, Chama, Tres Piedras and Questa. Other fires are contributing, too: the Lake Fire near Navajo Lake, the Dry Fire on the San Juan National Forest and fires in northern Arizona. So far, it looks like this smoke will be lofted in the air, creating hazy skies but not affecting surface level air quality.
Other areas of New Mexico are receiving hazy skies caused by fires in southern New Mexico and southeast Arizona.
The Fire and Smoke map at is a good resource for smoke forecasts and current surface air quality data from monitors on the ground. You can also read special smoke outlook reports for areas with fires, including the current one.
To get a sense of the near real-time smoke movement, the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh model from NOAA is a good reference. The vertically integrated smoke model looped on a map updates hourly and predicts smoke concentrations and general transport out to 18 hours in the future.
As always, check New Mexico Fire Information’s Smoke Management page for tips on protecting your health when and if smoke affects surface air quality.

Red Barn 7 Fire Update
Sunday August 6, 2023
4:00 pm
Size: 490 acres
Containment: 80%
Start Date: August 5, 2023
Cause: Under Investigation
After 5 p.m. on Aug. 5, Texas A&M Forest Service received a request for assistance on a fire burning 1.5 miles south of Fort Davis along Highway 17 in Jeff Davis County, Texas. The fire is burning in grass and brush fuels.
Texas A&M Forest Service has mobilized the following to assist with response efforts: fire managers and miscellaneous overhead, dozers, engine crews and a suppression crew module from Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System (TIFMAS), Emergency Medical Task Force (EMTF) personnel.
Yesterday:
The Red Barn 7 Fire started burning mid slope on a hill next to Highway 17. Crews began creating indirect containment lines next to existing roads by implementing a burnout operation, which is a removal of unburned fuel between the fire’s active edge and the road. Indirect containment lines are built some distance away from the active fire edge to take advantage of existing barriers and to provide for firefighter safety. Crews worked through the night, completing the burnout operation and holding the new containment lines.
Today:
There were no issues holding the containment lines last night around the now estimated 490 acre fire. Texas A&M Forest Service resources not working last night, TIFMAS crews and the EMTF returned to the fire at 8:45 am and by noon the Red Barn 7 Fire was 80% contained. Resources will continue patrolling and suppressing heat until end of shift today.
Weather and Fire Behavior:
Mild temperatures this morning around 70 degrees with maximum relative humidity around 45 percent. Winds will come from the southwest blowing around 7 to 12 mph. Temperatures will be hot with a high around 102 and minimum relative humidity around 15 percent. No thunderstorms are expected this afternoon. Tonight, temperatures will fall to around 72 degrees and relative humidity recovery will only be 45 percent.
Monday will remain hot with a high temperature near 102 degrees and minimum relative humidity falling to around 14 percent. There is a low chance that an isolated thunderstorm may appear on Monday afternoon. Lightning risk will be low, but gusty, erratic winds may be possible even with dry showers and thunderstorms.
