Actualización del Incendio Lowline
Martes 15 de Agosto, 2023 – 10:00 a.m.
Equipo de Manejo de Incidentes Tipo 3
Bryan Gaines, Comandante del Incidente
Teléfono de Información: GMUG Fire Information Hotline at (970) 874-6602
Lowline Fire Final Update
Tuesday, August 15, 2023 – 10:00 a.m.
Type 3 Incident Management
Bryan Gaines, Incident Commander
Information Phone: GMUG Fire Information Hotline at (970) 874-6602
Special Note: At 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, command of the Lowline Fire will transition back to the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison (GMUG) National Forests’ Gunnison Ranger District. Unless conditions change, this will be the last update for the Lowline Fire.
Current Situation: The Lowline Fire remains at 1871 acres with 55% of the fire contained. The remaining perimeter of the fire, while not considered an official containment line, has remained cool and is holding along natural features such as creek beds, aspen groves and ridgelines.
The firefighting strategy can now transition to a long-term operational plan managed by the GMUG. Firefighting personnel remain working on the fire and are prepared for quick response should fire conditions change. These firefighters will continue to maintain observational and strategic attack capacity until the Lowline Fire is no longer considered a re-ignition risk for the area. This level of readiness could remain in place for the next several months, depending on future weather and environmental conditions such as wind, precipitation, and fuel moisture.
Incident Commander Theo Engel, Assistant District Fire Management Officer, will be taking command of the Lowline Fire on Wednesday. “Since the Lowline Fire was first reported at 8 a.m. on July 26, approximately 575 personnel have worked on this fire. The investment that these people, this community, and our partner agencies have put into Lowline over the past several weeks has been incredible and is deeply appreciated. We have an excellent plan moving forward to continue to protect this investment and support this community”.
For ongoing information on fires in the area, the public can continue to monitor the GMUG Fire Information Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/GMUGFireInfo, as well as the Lowline Fire’s InciWeb page: https://inciweb.wildfire.gov/incident-information/cogmf-lowline-fire.
Weather & Fuel Conditions: Over the next several days, the fire area will see a potential for increased moisture, primarily in the afternoon and later into the evening. Winds remain low, and nighttime temperature lows remain in the 40s. Forecasted moisture will make fuels less available to carry fire until a drying period occurs. Previous hot spots along the western edge of the fire have cooled and have limited potential to spread. While mixed conifer stands continue to periodically burn and put out minimal smoke, the areas of aspen stands continue to resist fire spread. For the final Smoke Outlook for this fire, please visit: https://outlooks.airfire.org/outlook/ed63b240
Evacuations: A pre-evacuation order remains in effect for residents along CR 727 along Mill Creek. No other evacuations or pre-evacuations are in place near the fire. For additional information on evacuations, see Gunnison County Emergency Management at www.gunnisoncounty.org. Sign up to receive emergency alerts and evacuation notifications at https://bit.ly/3QhZVZg.
Closures: The closure order for the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests’ Gunnison Ranger District remains in effect. In the interest of public safety, fire officials ask visitors to be aware of fire personnel and avoid the area around Lowline Fire, especially the forest closure areas and pre-evacuation area along CR 727. CR 818 and CR 727 remain closed to the public and are for local traffic only.

Incident Commander: Jay Kurth
Management Team: NIMO Team 1
Management: Suppression
Fire size today: 1,440 acres
Containment: 0%
Personnel: 111
Evacuation Information: There are no current evacuations. Local residents should follow incident information for updates.
Closures: tinyurl.com/mpt9jeds
- Quartz Meadows Rd (NFSR#685)
- Quartz Ridge Trail (NFST#570)
- Quartz Creek Trail (NFST#571)
Latest Smoke Outlook: https://outlooks.wildlandfiresmoke. net/outlook/933fc4e4
INCIDENT OBJECTIVES:
- Firefighter and Public safety are the highest priority.
- Protect private lands within East Fork San Juan River drainage, natural resources, cultural and historic sites, recreation assets, and critical infrastructure including powerlines and gas utility lines.
Cloudy weather and rainstorms prohibited a Multi-Mission Aircraft flight to obtain updated acreage for the Quartz Ridge wildfire. Yesterday’s scattered thunderstorms and cloudy weather meant no increase in fire activity and firefighters did not smell or see any smoke from this wildfire. The three spot fires on the northeast side of Quartz Creek are diminished and the fire’s east side is holding at Quartz Creek.
The wildfire is burning in steep terrain in the South San Juan Wilderness. Indirect suppression tactics are the safest approach since significant (almost 90%) tree mortality exists which creates a potential for burning and falling trees. These hazardous conditions also limit access to crews from engaging in the spot fires that are now established on the east side of Quartz Creek.
YESTERDAY’S ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
- Continued to evaluate terrain and potential areas for containment outside of wilderness boundaries and scout for strategic areas for control.
TODAY’S PLAN:
- Continue with suppression tactic reviews, with the objective of keeping the fire south of East Fork Trail.
- Continue to improve the contingency line on the East Fork Road to the north and east of the fire.
- A module of firefighters will watch for spots from lookout locations.
- Continue to build structure protection plans both logistically and operationally.
- Crews will begin to use mechanized equipment along Forest Service Roads 631 and 643 to improve proposed strategic control lines. A chipper will be ordered to assist with removed trees and fuel.
WEATHER: Warmer weather is forecasted for the next week. Monsoon moisture is predicted with decreasing chances of possible afternoon thundershowers as the week progresses.

Closures:
- Fire area closure
- Cloman Park in Pagosa Springs
Latest Smoke Outlook:
outlooks.wildlandfiresmoke.net/outlook/933fc4e4
INCIDENT OBJECTIVES:
- Firefighter and Public safety are the highest priority.
- Protect private lands within the Weminuche Creek drainages, natural resources, cultural and historic sites, recreation assets and critical infrastructure including powerlines and gas utility lines.
Cloudy weather and rainstorms prohibited a Multi-Mission Aircraft flight to obtain updated acreage for the Bear Creek and Mosca wildfires. Yesterday’s scattered thunderstorms and cloudy weather meant no increase in fire activity and very little smoke.
Bear Creek Wildfire: Firefighters have been unable to directly engage the fire due to the steep remote terrain and heavy fuel loading of dead standing and down trees. The potential for spread remains in Bear Creek towards the Little Sand and Shaw Creek trails.
Mosca Wildfire: This wildfire is burning slowly in a remote area northwest of Bear Creek near Slide Mountain in steep terrain.
YESTERDAY’S ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
- Fire managers continued to use two masticators on the Mosca Road to the south of the fire to reduce fuels and to create a contingency line if that is needed.
- Crews in the Weminuche Valley area assessed risk level to private land/structures and developed and implemented structure protection plans.
- Local ground-fire resources continued to directly monitor fire growth and directional spread. These observations are critical to assess the probability of success with the current incident strategy.
- Pike hotshots were able to put start a handline around the Mosca wildfire.
TODAY’S PLAN:
- Continue fuels mitigation along the Mosca Road corridor with masticators.
- Utilize masticators to tie into a newly identified Forest Service Road.
- Begin prepping the Weminuche Trail to the wilderness boundary as a. contingency line.
- Operational supervisors will continue scouting indirect control opportunities to the south along the Mosca Road, connecting that into the Weminuche Valley.
- Continue to collaboratively develop Management Action Points (MAP) with cooperators and stakeholders. MAPs are clearly specified incident conditions that, when reached, prompt a predefined fire management action or trigger the implementation of new strategies/tactics.
- Pike hotshots will work to complete the handline around the fire, monitor the fire and cut dead trees away from the fire perimeter.
WEATHER:
The weather trend continues to include thunderstorms and wetting rain (more than 1/10” of rain). The threat of afternoon thunderstorms will decrease each day as the week progresses.

Incident Website: http://inciweb.wildfire.gov/incident-information/mtfnf-ridge-fire
Location: 6 miles southeast of Hungry Horse
Size: 3175 acres
Percent Contained: 12 %
Cause: Lightning
Start Date: July 30, 2023, 3:45 PM
Vegetation: Timber (Litter and Understory), Tall Grass, and Brush
Number of Personnel Assigned: 485
CURRENT SITUATION:
Yesterday, direct handline on the southern and western edge of the fire was extended by Hotshot crews. They made good progress despite working in dense brush and vegetation. As containment grows in those areas, mop up is being pushed 100 feet inside the fire line to prevent ignition of unburned fuels outside of the fire line. Mop up crews are using hose lays and hand crews to accomplish this task. Aerial resources worked together with crews to progress containment lines to the north and east. Aerial firefighting activity was active and robust on the east side of the fire. Four large air tankers dropped loads of fire retardant to create a line to slow the spread of the fire. Two Scooper airplanes and three helicopters worked to drop water on the fire directly. The indirect contingency line that is being constructed west of the fire north up to Halfmoon Fits road is moving towards completion.
Today the primary focus continues to be on the north and west side of the fire. Direct attack handline work and mop up will continue in that area. Aerial resources will continue to be utilized to slow the progress of the fire in the north and east sections. Handline and bulldozers will work to the east to cut direct and indirect lines. Structure protection crews, partnering with local firefighting resources, will continue their task of preparing and assessing potentially threatened structures to help reduce the risk to the community. Weather conditions continue to trend hot and dry. This will increase fire activity and will likely produce more visible smoke, mostly coming from the east portion of the fire.
The team has been in communication with the Flathead National Forest regarding the Doris fire and is prepared to support as requested.
WEATHER:
Today’s weather is forecast to be mostly sunny with a maximum temperature of 93 degrees, minimum relative humidity of 19% at lower elevations, with winds being light and terrain driven. The hot and dry trend will stay until the end of this week.
CLOSURES:
The Hungry Horse Reservoir is closed to all public access, including both the east and west side roads. NORTHERN ROCKIES TEAM 5 INCIDENT COMMANDER: JOE SAMPSON
CURRENT STATUS
Firefighters improved constructed line on the fire’s edge in an area just north of Sunset Peak. Helicopters assisted crews in removing unneeded hose from the fire line along the fire’s southeastern edge. Crews began chipping wood along the Marshall Creek Road south of the fire perimeter. In late July, firefighters had taken measures to reduce fuels in this area as to improve firefighter access and increase the probability of controlling the fire should it have moved south of the Clearwater River.
PLANNED ACTION
Firefighters continue to search for areas of heat near the fire perimeter along the fire's uncontained edge. The patchy and uneven burn pattern resulted in difficult mop-up conditions, hindering the ability to confidently increase containment. UAS infrared missions will continue in the early morning hours, although the thick canopy cover of the trees can make it harder to detect hot spots.
WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR
The fire’s incident meteorologist released another weather balloon yesterday. Data from the balloon showed temperatures 16 degrees warmer than Sunday at 6,500 feet with drier air. Temperatures in the mid-90s will persist through Thursday, relative humidity will be as low as 15-20 percent, and wind may gust up to 15 mph, triggering a fire weather watch for Wednesday and Thursday. There is the potential for increased fire behavior with this warming and drying trend. However, rain and cooler conditions may be in the forecast for the weekend.
CLOSURES AND EVACUATIONS
The Missoula County Sheriff’s Office has no evacuation orders or warnings in effect due to the Colt Fire as of 8/14/2023. For evolving Evacuations and Warnings please visit the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/MissoulaCountySheriffsOffice.
Thompson Ridge Fire Update Aug 15 2023
Related Incident: Thompson Ridge Fire
Publication Type: News
Community meeting at the Beaver City Offices this evening, Tuesday, August 15 at 6 p.m.
FIRE SITUATION
The Thompson Ridge Fire is now 15% contained, thanks to the hard work of firefighters. The area has received some monsoonal moisture with the recent storms. Cooler, damper conditions remain, but winds may increase fire activity when wind direction and terrain align.
The western portion of the fire received the most precipitation, up to half an inch in some areas. While firefighters work throughout the day, they will take necessary precaution to stay safe through the predicted thunderstorms. Observed fire behavior has been moderate, but heavy fuels are still holding heat in some portions of the fire.
The crews that were inserted on the southern perimeter are working diligently to cover the large amount of area, completing suppression tactics along the edge. Firefighters on the northern perimeter have been fully inserted and will be spiking out in the area to reduce travel time. They will continue building indirect line to secure the area, in case the fire does move that direction. Direct attack is not possible in the area, due to terrain and topography. The northeast corner has seen little smoke the last few shifts. Crews in the area are mopping up, and will continue to hold and improve the line there. The southeast corner is where fire managers have declared containment. Firefighters on this perimeter will begin discussions of suppression repair. Helicopters continue to support firefighters on the ground with bucket drops.
Great Basin Team 5 will host a community meeting in Beaver tonight, Tuesday, 8/15 at 6 p.m. at the City Center. This meeting will be streamed on the Fishlake National Forest Facebook page for those who are unable to attend in-person.
EVACUATIONS: None at this time.
CLOSURES: Please refer to closure order. Please note that SR-153, Kent’s Lake Road (137), Upper and Lower Kent’s Lake, Little Res. Campground, Anderson Meadow, and LeBaron remain open at this time. Use caution in and around these areas, as you will see an influx of both ground and aviation equipment working to suppress the fire.

Elkhorn Fire Daily Update August 15 2023
Related Incident: Elkhorn Fire
Publication Type: News
McCall, Idaho – The Elkhorn fire is currently at 25,978 acres with 40% completed. The firefighters will monitor the west perimeter along the 421 road. The heavy equipment task force is working north and east of the fire in thick underbrush, using chippers to reduce the fallen fuel load for later disposal. Hand crews will work in that area at least two more days to construct heavy fuel breaks that follow the 505 UTV trail, then continue into the previous Shissler Wildfire from 2020. Backhaul between Allison Ranch and China Bar is progressing well as boats transport fire equipment for pullout from the river at Whitewater Ranch.
Communication continues with the boaters entering the river at Corn Creek and again at Hancock Rapids before entering the fire footprint along the river corridor. Boaters are required to stop at Hancock Rapids at river mile 26.1 to receive further instruction from either a Forest Service representative or the posted information board regarding passing through and camping in the area of the Elkhorn fire. Camping, recreating (i.e., picnic, bathroom breaks and beach walking) and stopping through the area of fire activity is allowed. Upon leaving Hancock Rapids there will be no stopping until boaters pass Magpie Creek Camp. After passing Magpie Creek Camp, boaters will be allowed to camp and recreate on a First Come, First Served basis everywhere except: Upper Allison, Allison, Lower Allison, Whitewater Camp, and Campbell’s Ferry. Upon leaving Campbell’s Ferry, there are no camping restrictions connected to the Elkhorn Fire. For additional information on rafting, contact the river desk at 208-756-5587 or 208-481-2625.
