Related Incident: North Willamette Complex
Publication Type: News
SPECIAL NOTE
There will be a community meeting for the Willamette Complex North Saturday, August 17th at 11 a.m. The meeting will take place at the McKenzie High School (new gym) located at 51187 Blue River Dr, Finn Rock, OR 97488.
CURRENT SITUATION
Cooler temperatures, increased humidity, and greater smoke/cloud coverage is expected to contribute to a decrease in fire behavior today. The Ore and Pyramid fires continue to be managed for full suppression.
Ore Fire
Blue River, 2,864 Acres, 12% Contained, 147 Total Personnel, Cause Under Investigation
Yesterday, crews continued to evaluate opportunities to conduct burnout operations along the northern flank of the fire—with the goal of inhibiting fire growth beyond the 1509 and 827 Roads. Night crews observed minimal activity on the southern end of the fire and established a perimeter around a spot fire to the north, where more active fire behavior was observed. Today, crews will continue to secure the spot fire, before evaluating opportunities to continue firing operations. Crews and heavy equipment across the Ore Fire will continue to prepare indirect lines, patrol the fire perimeter, suppress flare-ups or hot spots, and secure threats to the line by removing trees, snags, and other fuels.
Pyramid Fire
East of Middle Santiam Wilderness, 1,323 Acres, 73% Contained, 223 Total Personnel, Lightning Caused
Crews and heavy equipment continue to hold and improve fire lines, patrol the fire perimeter, and conduct mop up. Pockets of intense and scattered heat continue to be identified by infrared technology.
Weather & Fire Behavior
A strong pulse of moisture this morning will greatly influence the forecast. Predicted maximum temperature is 70 to 74 °F in the valleys and 66 to 70 °F on the ridgetops. Predicted minimum relative humidity is 54 to 60% in the valleys and 64 to 70% on the ridgetops. Weather conditions are expected to result in a decrease in fire behavior today, however, heavy dead and down fuels continue to hold heat. For smoke and air quality conditions visit: AirNow.gov

Diamond Complex and Middle Fork Daily Update 08 15 2024
Related Incident: Middle Fork Fire
Publication Type: News
The Diamond Complex on the Umpqua National Forest consists of 27 lightning-caused fires totaling approximately 9,930 acres, with 870 people assigned. The Middle Fork Fire in the northwest corner of Crater Lake National Park has 41 people assigned, and the Diamond Complex is sharing resources as needed. The park remains open.
KEY MESSAGES: For public and firefighter safety, the North Entrance Road in the park is temporarily closed for firefighters to prepare control lines with machinery along that road. For details, visit https://www.nps.gov/crla/learn/news/crater-lake-temporarily-closes-north-entrance-for-the-middle-fork-fire.htm
Sixteen of the 27 fires in the Diamond Complex are now 100 percent contained.
OPERATIONS:
Middle Fork Fire (5,075 acres, 0% contained): The Wildland Fire Module conducted low-intensity burnout operations in the southwest corner. Fuel reduction continues along roads and trails on the west of the fire. Fire managers are waiting for the right conditions for firing operations on the north side of the fire near Hwy 230. At the North Entrance to Crater Lake National Park, crews and equipment operators are slowly moving south along the North Entrance Road, clearing vegetation with a specialized machine called a “Spider”.
The eastern flank near Klamath Ridge showed the most activity on Wednesday. Air resources, including helicopters for water bucket drops and reconnaissance flights and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS, or drones) for infrared imaging and firing operations remain available. The Pacific Crest Trail from the Dutton Ridge Intersection to Hwy 138, Lightning Springs, Bald Crater Loop, Bert Creek, and Boundary Springs Trails (within the park) are closed. Hikers may not use the North Entrance Road to enter or leave Crater Lake National Park.
Diamond Complex Fires
Pine Bench Fire (North of Hwy 138 near Dry Creek, 3,250 acres, 32% contained): Crews continued a small burnout operation in Medicine Creek to even up the fire’s edge, and the UAS finished the firing last evening. Firefighters continue to mop up a series of spot fires along the east edge near Camel Hump. A structure protection plan is being developed for residences near the northwest corner of the Boulder Creek Wilderness. The fire remains east of Boulder Creek and has burned to a natural barrier in the drainage, slowing progression on the northwest corner.
Potter Fire (North of Hwy 138, two miles southeast of Potter Mountain, 2,737 acres, 0% contained): The Diamond Mountain Hotshot crew burned out from the east dozer line in the northeast corner near Beverly Creek. The Rogue River Hotshot crew is constructing handline down a ridge southwest of Potter Mountain. Firefighters are building direct line around a slopover on the northwest corner of the fire in the Nancy Creek drainage and mopping up. To the north, firefighters are improving dozer lines.
Trep Fire (About four miles south of Hwy 138, 492 acres, 0% contained): Fire crews are securing the north edge, and will build direct line on the south edge today.
Ooya Fire (North of Hwy 138, one mile northeast of Bird Point, 372 acres, 37% contained): Ooya is now boxed in with containment lines and mopping up of the western flank is underway. Masticating along the 2610 Road to the southwest past Bird Point will continue to create a contingency line.
Brodie Fire (Five miles south of Hwy 138, south of Devils Canyon, 207 acres, 45% contained): Direct line is being constructed that will tie into the road system. Crews doing mop-up are being supported with water pumped from Skookum Lake.
Lemolo Fire (North of Lemolo Lake on Bunker Hill, 1247 acres, 46% contained): The fire is slowly filling in between the southern edge and the Lemolo Lakeshore. Mop up continues to secure the perimeter.
Trail Fire (East of Hwy 138 on the west slope of Mt. Thielsen, 842 acres, 77% contained): Firefighters are mopping and securing the eastern edge into the Mount Thielsen Wilderness, using a hose lay with water and helicopter bucket support as needed. Backhauling of equipment has started there for reuse on other areas of the complex.
Lost Fire (Northeast of Trep Fire, 63 acres, 0% contained): The 4800 Road is being prepped and opened for mastication to create a fuel break and contingency control line.
Trap Fire (One mile south of Hwy 138 near Trap Mountain, 17 acres, 0% contained): Crews are constructing fuel breaks along existing roads in the Bear Creek Canyon as a contingency line for this group of fires.
Other fires within the Diamond Complex:
Bear Trap (65 acres, 14% contained) This fire was previously erroneously reported as contained.
Loafer Fire (43 acres, 58% contained)
Rough Fire (11 acres, 100% contained)
Thin Fire (1 acre, 100% contained)
Wood Fire (23 acres, 100% contained)
WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR: Today will be cooler and wetter, with a threat of isolated to scattered thunderstorms. Any active fire behavior will likely be from any outflow winds associated with thunderstorms.
SMOKE OUTLOOK: Smoke has returned to the area and may reduce visibility and hinder air operations. For the most up to date information, please visit fire.airnow.gov/
CLOSURES, RESTRICTIONS, EVACUATIONS: The Umpqua National Forest has three closures in place impacting every district of the forest. Most of the Diamond Lake Ranger District is closed. Chalk Fire (5,512 acres, 54% containment)
Significant progress has been made securing the east side of the Chalk Fire, crews are patrolling and mopping up that edge. More work remains on the western side of the fire where there are large, unburned islands adjacent to control lines that have the potential to spot across the line. Weakened trees and snags are being removed as crews improve access roads.
Coffeepot Fire (6,120 acres, 35% containment)
The Coffeepot Fire crews are mopping up secured line on the west side of the fire. But much like the Chalk Fire, unburned islands of forest on the eastern side of the fire are the primary concern for crews improving the control line there.
Moss Mountain Fire (790 acres, 0% containment)
Forest Road 2120 is the best holding option for the southern edge of the Moss Mountain Fire. Air support will assist crews in this steep terrain with heavy timber.
208 Fire (230 acres, 0% containment)
The 208 Fire remains unstaffed but is patrolled and monitored with air resources. Strategic options continue to be assessed.
217 Fire, Tire Mountain Fire, and McKinley Fire
The 217, Tire Mountain, and McKinley fires are 100% contained and crews are monitoring status daily.

KEY MESSAGE:
On August 12, 2024, the Boise National Forest adjusted the fire closure areas. All roads and trails remain closed within these closures, to provide for public and firefighter safety. Please reference specific closures on the Forest’s website and the fire’s InciWeb page.
CURRENT STATUS/PLANNED ACTIONS:
Middle Fork Complex: The Middle Fork Complex is comprised of the Bulldog and Nellie fires.
On the Bulldog Fire, firefighters continue holding and building containment along the southern edge of the fire. Crews are also making progress along the west side of the fire building handline and removing vegetation alongside FS road 698 and to the junction of FS road 698 and FS road 671. Yesterday, helicopters supported the efforts of the crews on the ground by dropping buckets of water to cool the edge of the fire on the southeast side along the Lightning Creek trail. The fire continues to burn to the north and east towards the Rattlesnake (2006) burn area. The public is reminded that the Middlefork Road is closed at the Forest Service boundary just north of Lightning Creek for firefighter and public safety as crews continue to work to protect private property and structures in the vicinity of Crouch.
The Nellie fire is burning in steep terrain with limited access. The fire is burning into the Pioneer Fire (2016) burn area to the east. Firefighters will be doing point protection and will complete wrapping the Deadwood Lookout with fire resistant material to protect the structure from radiant heat and burning embers. The public is reminded that Forest Service Road #555 is closed at the intersection of Highway 17 all the way to the Forest Service Road #579 intersection.
Wapiti Fire: The Wapiti fire continues to slowly burn down the north and northeast side. The fire has reached the South Fork of the Payette River to the northeast providing firefighters with a safe location to implement suppression tactics. The west side of the fire is holding on top of the ridge in rocky barren terrain. Today, the firefighters will continue to ensure their fire edge is secure and patrol the fire line. They will also resume structure protection and any improvements to their water pumping systems for the homes in the area.
Bulltrout Fire: There has been very little change to the Bulltrout fire and containment remains at 92%. Today, firefighters will use an unmanned aerial system (UAS) to search for remaining heat within the fire perimeter and continue to patrol the fireline.
WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR:
A passing storm system will come through our region today bringing scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. There will be a break in storm activity midday and the inversion will lift creating convection which may increase fire activity. In the evening, we are expected to see outflow winds with gust up to 40mph. Cloud cover and cool wet conditions aid firefighters in suppression tactics.
CLOSURES, RESTRICTIONS, AND EVACUATIONS:
Middle Fork Complex: The Boise County Sheriff's Office continues to maintain the Level 2 evacuation notice for residents on and near the Middlefork Road between Stump Ranch Road up to Tie Creek Campground. The Boise National Forest issued an area closure for the fire (Closure #0402-06-59) effective August 12, 2024. The purpose of this order is to protect public safety during the fires.
Wapiti Fire: The evacuation order for Summer Homes and the Sawtooth Lodge remain in effect for the Wapiti Fire, as does the area closure issued by the Sawtooth and Boise National Forests (Closure #0402-05-94) effective August 12, 2024. This Order is for public and firefighter safety during fire suppression efforts of the Wapiti Fire.
Bulltrout Fire: The Bull Trout Fire Area Closure (Closure #0402-05-93) remains in effect for the roads and trails within the perimeter of the fire. Boise National Forest issued this order on August,12, 2024. It will be rescinded as soon as it is safe to do so.
Closure information and maps are posted on the Forests’ website and the fire’s Inciweb page as they are in place. https://tinyurl.com/2u8v3pf7

Black Canyon Fire Daily Update 08 15 2024
Related Incident:
Publication Type: News
Key Message
The fire has been separated into three distinct fires with more accurate mapping: the northern fire, a 12 acre spot fire in the middle, and the southern fire. The northern fire and southern fires are completely lined. Mop-up operations will continue today. Helicopters will be hauling water blivets to the northeastern area of the fire today, establishing a more accessible water source for crews and engines. Full suppression is still the main objective for the crews. Attacking and lining spot fires while creating handline has slowed progression.
Current Status
Yesterday, direct line was established, tying in the south and east side of the fire using hand crews and a skidgine, a tool adapted from logging machinery that delivers water to hard-to-reach areas. Engines in these areas worked on the switchbacks slowing the fire’s spread and extinguishing spot fires. On the northeastern side, crews laid 1500 feet of hose to assists crews in continued mop up operations (extinguishing or removing any burning materials near the control line). In the south area of the northern fire, crews chased numerous spot fires and prepared the area for water blivets (large plastic containers that hold water) for the engines and crews to use for easier access to the fire to be delivered via helicopter today.
Today, a Type 2 helicopter will deliver 22 water blivets, providing 1500 gallons of water, pumps, and bladder bags, to places on the east side of the fire to aid in mop-up operations. Firefighters will continue lining the 12 acre spot fire and checking for hot spots within 132 feet of the southern fire’s perimeter.
Weather and Fire Behavior
¼ inch of rain covered the incident area last night which may impact travel for fire personnel today due to clay-surfaced roads. Today, it will be mostly sunny with high temperatures ranging from 75-80 degrees with variable southeast winds up to 10 mph. Expect isolated showers thunderstorms with a chance of precipitation in the afternoon and evening.

Weather keeps firefighters alert today
Total Complex Estimated Acres: 182,951
Location: Ukiah, Oregon
Cause: Under Investigation
Personnel: 996
Containment: 90%
Estimated Cost: $68 million
Resources: 22 crews | 26 engines | 2 helicopters | 24 water tenders | 17 dozers
Highlights: Thunderstorms with lightning and potential gusty outflow winds create a heads-up day for firefighters.
Operations: The potential for two rounds of thunderstorms today in both the early morning and afternoon have firefighters watching the weather closely. These thunderstorms can create gusty outflow winds and cause fire-weakened trees to fall. If the thunderstorms are dry, lightning could start new fires in the area. A group of engines and crews are ready to aggressively respond to any new fires.
Yesterday the northern portion of the fire that has continually flared up, smoked and smoldered produced little smoke. The same drainages that have been holding heat including Swale, Ditch and Potamus creek were watched closely, and any heat detected was extinguished by engines and crews. Across the northern fire line, fire managers worked to solidify their suppression repair plans and remove any unneeded equipment and supplies from private lands.
Suppression repair work is now complete near Dale. This work will be inspected before it is approved. An excavator is working down the fireline on the western side pulling in brush. The rest of the southern half of the fire is still getting repaired or waiting for local government agency inspection. Firefighters will check the North Fork Owens fire today for repair work needs.
The public can expect to see more firefighters and equipment parked along roadways. With heavy equipment coming off the fire there may be increased traffic. Please pass with caution and be alert for large trucks on blind corners.
Weather: Elevated chances of showers and thunderstorms will persist through Friday. Today a 70 percent chance of rain may bring widespread showers with measurable precipitation. A mix of clouds and sun with cooler temperatures. Highs will be in the lower 70s to upper 80s with increased humidity.
Smoke: Smoke has moderated but is expected to persist from regional fires in the area. Residents can expect to continue to see smoke from interior pockets of unburned fuel. To see a detailed smoke outlook visit: https://linktr.ee/battlemntcomplex2024
