This will be the last daily update for the Creek Fire. Updates will be issued only should conditions change.

Current Situation: The management of the Creek Fire will be transitioned to a type 3 organization local to the Sierra National Forest as of 6 p.m. tomorrow, November 21, 2020. A flight late in the afternoon yesterday revealed that, as expected, the recent high-elevation snow has put a further damper on the fire. The only remaining heat detected was from isolated large logs which continue to smolder as they burn into the wet snow. Surrounded by snow and granite, managers are confident that the fire will not progress further under winter conditions.

A Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Team has been assessing fire impacts, including burn severity (which can affect regrowth) and tree mortality. A plan for recovery is being formulated based on that data. The BAER plan will be made available to the public as soon as it is completed. Current Situation: Crews are re-engaging in operations today after yesterday’s weather hampered repair efforts. Fire managers will be flying the fire today to assess containment in the Wilderness on the northern and northeastern edges of the fire.

Tomorrow will be the incident’s last daily update, unless conditions change. After 10 weeks of management by Incident Management Teams from across the country, the Creek Fire will be handed back to the Sierra National Forest on Sunday, November 22, 2020. Sierra National Forest resources will work as conditions permit in the fire area to continue hazard tree removal and repair, and to implement the Burned Area Emergency Response plan. Weather: Weather today is expected to be clear and cold, with temperatures slightly below normal. A chance of snow is predicted to return to the fire area by Monday, with several winter storms lined up off the California coast.

Current Situation: As of yesterday evening, all suppression repair on the northwestern edge of the fire has been completed. Remaining operations have been suspended today as a wintery system moves through the area. All heavy equipment has been removed to lower elevations, but is prepared to start work again this afternoon if conditions allow. Firefighters will scout opportunities to re-engage as soon as the storm clears.

Weather: The winter weather passing through the fire area is expected to clear today by around 2 p.m., with rain and high-elevation snow persisting until then. Dry but cold weather is then expected to return to the fire area.

Situación actual: Las cuadrillas tuvieron otro buen día ayer, la reparación de la supresión está teniendo buen progreso alrededor del incendio. Muchas áreas ya se terminaron, incluyendo la orilla oeste del incendio. Al día de hoy, el campamento de incendios al norte de Oakhurst, California, se cerró y cualquier cuadrilla que quede ahí se moverá a trabajar en las otras áreas. El trabajo de reparación se terminó en el Camino Central Camp. El camino ahora está ABIERTO a las personas que cuentan con permisos. Current Situation: Crews had another good day yesterday, with suppression repair progressing well around the fire. Many areas have been completed, including on the northwestern edge of the fire. As of today, the fire camp north of Oakhurst, California, has been closed and any remaining crews will move to work in other areas. Repair work has been completed on the Central Camp Road. That road is now OPEN to permit holders. It is still within the closure area, however, and remains closed to the public.

Weather: The incoming weather system is expected to bring higher winds and at least some light rain and high-elevation snow to the fire area. Heavy equipment will be brought to lower elevations in advance of the storm, and crews will monitor carefully and leave areas where standing dead trees could be toppled by winds.

Current Situation: Favorable weather has allowed crews to continue to make good progress on suppression repair around the fire and anticipate completion of those tasks this week. Demobilization of excess resources continues. Firefighters are regularly evaluating conditions in the Wilderness areas on the northern and northeastern edges of the fire. Some small fingers are smoldering in heavy fuels, but the area is under snow and little to no overall fire growth is anticipated. Windy conditions may cause a slight uptick in smoke production from those areas in advance of a storm front which is anticipated to pass through on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

Weather: Warmer conditions are predicted today, with near-normal temperatures and light winds. A cold front is expected to enter the fire area on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, bringing the potential for rain and high-elevation snow.

Current Situation: Crews continue to make good progress on suppression repair. Currently, of 338 miles of dozer line, 258 miles have been completely repaired (76%.) Of 98 miles of handline, 72 miles have been completed (73%.) Roads are also being repaired: 148 miles were used as line, and 118 miles (80%) have now been repaired. With favorable weather predicted for the next few days, these numbers are expected to grow. Some lines, now covered in snow, will likely not be accessible this year. Firefighters predict that if conditions remains favorable work should be completed in the next 5 to 7 days.

While it is unlikely that firefighters will be able to access the still-open line in the Wilderness areas on the northern and northeastern sides of the fire, there has been very little heat observed and no overall fire spread in the last 5 days. This remaining open line is in areas that are high elevation, snow-covered, and largely surrounded by granite. Crews will continue to monitor, but are not expecting further growth.  

Weather: Temperatures are expected to be near normal for the next several days, with colder air entering the area prior to another system on Tuesday/ Wednesday. Models are not yet confident on the amount of precipitation, if any, that this next system will bring.

Situación actual: Se acumuló aproximadamente una pulgada de nieve en elevaciones más altas en el área del incendio como resultado de un débil sistema que llegó durante la noche. Ese sistema ya pasó y se espera que el cielo continúe soleado el día de hoy. Las cuadrillas continúan trabajando en la reparación de la supresión, están enfocando su esfuerzo en el Camino Grizzly, Camino Central Camp, en los Lagos Huntington y Shaver y en el camino Dinkey Creek. Además, los residentes y automovilistas pueden ver aeronaves en el área del Lago Shaver ya que Southern California Edison (SCE) continúa colocando postes de electricidad y jalando líneas.

Se informa a los automovilistas que la Carretera 168 está abierta y el Cierre del bosque continúa en efecto. Este cierre está en efecto para proteger a los bomberos y equipo que se encuentran ja lo largo de los caminos y áreas quemadas para tirar y remover los árboles peligrosos, proporcionar estabilización de las pendientes y reparar cualquier daño hecho durante el esfuerzo de supresión. La reciente precipitación creó condiciones de hielo a lo largo de los caminos y el tráfico extra es un peligro para los bomberos. Además, el Camino Central Camp continúa cerrado para los visitantes y ahora está cerrado para los residentes (aún aquéllos que tienen permisos) de 9 a.m. a 12 p.m. y de 1 p.m. a 4 p.m. para la caía de árboles.

Clima: El débil sistema que pasó sobre el incendio durante la noche resultó en escaso polvo de nieve sobre los 7,000 pies. Se espera que las temperaturas sean cálidas y secas hoy, y se espera que entre otro sistema en el área del incendio alrededor del miércoles de la siguiente semana.
