Fire summary:
Last night’s wind shift changed the winds coming from east to a southwest wind ending the fire making huge runs westward towards Lincoln City. Currently the fire activity is low: creeping and smoldering within the fire perimeter. After being at the fire today, Matt Thomas, ODF Protection Unit Forester, stated " Today’s weather is allowing the fire fighters to gain traction and make progress towards extinguishing this fire".
Fire operations is being assisted by local resources including equipment and employees from Hancock Forest Management, Weyerhaeuser Company and Miami Corporation and the Confederate Tribes of Grand Ronde.
Oregon Department of Forestry appreciates the partnership with the local fire and rescue squads especially North Lincoln Fire and Rescue, Newport Fire Department, Depoe Bay Fire and Rescue as well as the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon Department of Transportation for their assistance since the beginning of this incident.
Tonight’s weather forecast is for continued winds from the southwest 3-5 mph with high relative humidity recovery and mild temperatures in the 50’s. This will keep the fire low to the ground and fire fighters will continue working through the night.

Fire Summary:
Weather conditions were favorable last night for an Infra-red flight to fly over the fires to gather data for accurate fire perimeter mapping and acreage determination. The Echo Mountain Fire and Kimberling Fire are still separate fires, the combined acreage is 2,435 acres and zero percent containment.
Last night the wind shifted from east winds to southwesterly winds and that will help fire fighters begin to attack this fire by establishing an anchor point and work on the east side of the fire.
Overhead personnel are flying in today from the Florida Forestry Service to add capacity to the Oregon Department of Forestry staff in managing this fire.
Pacific Power workers along with ODF Fire Officials and ODOT Foresters are walking the affect powerlines in the fire area to assess damages. Repairs have started. Power needs to be restored before people are allowed to return to their homes and road closures lifted. Restoring power to the Lincoln City Hospital is a priority and vital before it can reopen.

Fire fighters had a hard night last night working these fires, as strong winds pushed the fires in a west/southwest direction. Yesterday Echo Mountain Fire was approximately 46 acres but increased during the night. Yesterday, the Kimberling Fire was estimated at 120 acres. Today the combined acreage for the two fires is over 1,000 acres. The Terrace Fire near Waldport has been contained. An Infra-Red (heat seeking) flight has been ordered for today to get a map of the current fires and better size estimate. The Echo Mountain Fire started on the north side of Hwy 18 near the mile marker 7-8 and crossed over and is burning in a southwardly direction. At this time, it is unknown how much area has burned south of the highway. The Kimberling Fire is located on Hwy 18 near mile marker 3-4 near Otis. Highway 18 remains closed for travel between Hwy 101 and Grande Ronde.
Fire fighting resources are stretched thin and it will take up to 48 hours to assess what damage occurred last night. Fire fighters are working in a very dynamic situation under sustained east winds. Their priority is public and fire fighter safety while providing point structure protection. Oregon Department of Forestry West Oregon District Forester Michael Currans stated that “we can’t handle another fire start on the landscape”. The public is cautioned to be very diligent about running any type of motorized equipment. As of September 3, the West Oregon District is in extreme fire danger for general public use. Periodic updates on fire activity will posted to the ODF - West Oregon District Facebook page.
