Three fires actively burning in a mix of timber and brush on the Colville Indian Reservation comprise the Inchelium Complex: the Fry Fire, Inchelium Highway Fire, and Kewa Fields Fire.  All three fires are being managed for full suppression. The cause of the fires remains under investigation. Crews remain focused on point protection with an emphasis on structures and natural and cultural resources, and minimizing the footprint on all three fires.  A virtual community meeting will be held at 7:30PM tonight via Facebook Live on the Colville Tribal Broadcasts, News and Information Facebook page. The event will feature updates from Colville Business Council member Joel Boyd, Incident Commander Eric Knerr, fire operations leadership, and fire weather and behavior specialists.

Current Situation: Aviation resources were unable to fly yesterday due poor visibility under an inversion.  The inversion lifted late last night increasing fire behavior, resulting in spotting in some areas. On the northwest flank of the Inchelium Highway Fire firefighters constructed fire line around the increased perimeter and the new spot fires. There was also increased activity around the structures on the other flanks. At the Kewa Fields Fire one small area on the ridge above Stray Dog Canyon continues to be difficult to hold. Crews continued to build line around the slopover in the southwest corner were the fire crossed Falls Creek Road. The Fry Fire continues to be held in check.

Today’s Operations: Fry Fire (500 acres): The Fry Fire is holding well and crews continue to mop up to work to put the fire in patrol status. A Level 2 evacuation is in effect for residents living near Twin Lakes and Meteor Road including North and South Twin.

Inchelium Highway Fire (6,887 acres): Crews will work to hold and improve fire lines on the northwest end, continue monitor for spotting, and do point protection around structures on other flanks. Aviation assets will likely be grounded due to smoke. A Level 2 evacuation is in effect for residents near Hall Creek Road and Seyler Valley Road.

Kewa Fields Fire (10,825 acres): Resources are being moved to priority areas above Stray Dog Canyon and along the southwest flank of the fire. Level 3 Evacuation is in effect for Stray Dog Canyon south to the Kewa Fields Fire area. Yesterday a new Level 2 Evacuation was put in effect in the vicinity of the southwest flank of Kewa Fields Fire in the proximity of Wilmont Creek Road. A Level 2 Evacuation remains is in effect in the area extending two miles north of Stray Dog Canyon.

Weather and Fire Behavior: Slightly cooler temperatures with increased humidities are expected today, with winds from the south/southwest. Warmer and drier conditions are expected to move into the fire area mid week. Smoke over the area could again moderate temperatures.  There continues to be a potential for active fire spread with backing and flanking with occasional uphill spread.

Smoke: Moderate to heavy smoke impacts are anticipated as a result of smoke from the Inchelium Complex mixing with smoke from active fires in northwest Oregon that is being pushed into the region.

Road Closures:  The Seyler Valley Road north of Bridge Creek is closed, and Hall Creek Road is closed. Bridge Creek Road is open.

Inchelium Complex Update Sept 12 2020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Three fires actively burning in a mix of timber and brush on the Colville Indian Reservation comprise the Inchelium Complex: the Fry Fire, Inchelium Highway Fire, and Kewa Fields Fire.  All three fires are being managed for full suppression. The cause of the fires remains under investigation. Crews remain focused on point protection with an emphasis on structures and natural and cultural resources, and minimizing the footprint on all three fires. Current Situation:  Mop up on the west side of the Fry Fire continued yesterday and the fire remains relatively secure.  Light southerly winds made firefighting difficult on the northern ends of both of the larger fires as smoke restricted the use of aircraft. The Inchelium Highway Fire pushed over a primary line on the northwest flank late yesterday, but remains within the secondary containment strategy.  The east, south, and a majority of the west sides of the fire are holding well.   On the Kewa Fields Fire firefighters continued to secure the slopover on the south flank across Falls Creek Road and kept the fire from moving over the ridge above Stray Dog Canyon on the northeast flank.

Today’s Operations: Fry Fire (500 acres):  Continue mop up the western edge and secure the north, east, and southern perimeters. A Level 2 evacuation is in effect for residents living near Twin Lakes and Meteor Road including North and South Twin.

Inchelium Highway Fire (6,607 acres):  Crews will work today to attempt to build fire line directly on the burning perimeter in the northwest flank during today’s shift to minimize the spread of the fire.  They will also work to hold and secure the other flanks where lines have held for several days, utilizing aviation assets to support ground forces, when it is safe to do so.  A Level 2 evacuation is in effect for residents near Hall Creek Road and Seyler Valley Road.

Kewa Fields Fire (10,279 acres):   Although weather conditions are favorable for containing the fire as planned along the ridge directly above the 1049 Road, terrain is making that objective difficult.  As a contingency, crews are looking at a road system further to the south and preparing Silver Creek Road for use as a containment line, should it be needed along the south flank.  Firefighters continue to hold the fire on the ridge above Stray Dog Canyon in the northeast corner.  The ‘Stray Dog Group’ is also exploring contingency options north of Kewa Fields Fire and continuing structure protection assessments, including building fire line around residences in the canyon. A Level 3 Evacuation is in effect for Stray Dog Canyon south to the Kewa Fields Fire area. A Level 2 Evacuation is in effect in the area extending two miles north of Stray Dog Canyon.

Weather and Fire Behavior:  Warm and dry weather will prevail with south winds becoming breezy in the afternoon hours, although temperatures may trend cooler than expected due to increasing smoke.  Humidity will be very low with poor to fair overnight recovery.  Widespread smoke will continue to filter in from west of the Cascades and then remain in place through the weekend.  Fire behavior today could be active with flare-ups, single and group tree torching.  Smoky skies may shade the fire reducing activity.

Road Closures:  The Seyler Valley Road north of Bridge Creek is closed, and Hall Creek Road is closed. Bridge Creek Road remains open.

Inchelium Complex Update Sept 11 2020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Three fires actively burning in a mix of timber and brush on the Colville Indian Reservation comprise the Inchelium Complex: the Fry Fire, the Inchelium Highway Fire, and Kewa Field Fire.  All three fires are being managed for full suppression. The cause of the fires remains under investigation. Crews remain focused on point protection with an emphasis on structures and natural and cultural resources, and minimizing the footprint on all three fires. A night shift is assisting with holding and securing fire lines, with additional resources being added as they become available. Current Situation:  On the Fry Fire yesterday, fire lines remained secure on the north, east, and southern flanks.  On the west flank crews worked to improve fire line. Another successful day was had on Inchelium Highway Fire with direct line completed across the entire north flank.  Crews also picked up several small slopovers on the west flank. Retardant drops and fire boss water drops were used when visibility permitted to slow the spread of Kewa Field Fire. Overnight, the northeast flank of the fire pushed its way to the ridge above Stray Dog Canyon.

Today’s Operations:

Fry Fire (500 acres):  Crews will continue to mop up the western edge and hold and secure the north, east, and southern perimeter. A Level 2 evacuation is in effect for residents living near Twin Lakes and Meteor Road including North and South Twin.

Inchelium Highway Fire (6,507 acres):  Firefighters will continue to reinforce and further secure all flanks and, when available and visibility permits, utilize aviation assets to support ground forces.  A Level 2 evacuation is in effect for residents near Hall Creek Road and Seyler Valley Road.

Kewa Field Fire (10,079 acres):  Work will progress to secure containment along the 1049 Road, and suppress an area of slopover that occurred across the road. Work will also continue to secure an anchor point on the southern flank. A new division has been formed for the Stray Dog Canyon area and charged with exploring containment opportunities and determining what actions will be needed to protect structures in the area with the fire’s advance towards the canyon.  A Level 3 Evacuation is in effect for Stray Dog Canyon south to the Kewa Fire area. A Level 2 Evacuation is planned to go into effect in the area extending two miles north of Stray Dog Canyon.

Weather and Fire Behavior:  Stable conditions going through the weekend will result in warm daytime temperatures in the 80’s and low relative humidity. West winds will develop and settle in Friday morning with breezes expected during the afternoon hours. A decrease in air quality is likely as smoke moves in from west of the Cascades.  Although forecasted winds are light, a potential remains for significant fire behavior.

Road Closures:  The Seyler Valley Road north of Bridge Creek is closed, and Hall Creek Road is closed. Bridge Creek Road remains open.

Inchelium Complex Update Sept 10 2020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Three fires actively burning in a mix of timber and brush on the Colville Indian Reservation comprise the Inchelium Complex: the Inchelium Highway Fire, Fry Fire and Kewa Field Fire.  All three fires are being managed for full suppression. The cause of the fires remains under investigation.

Current Situation:  Yesterday, on the Fry Fire, firefighters constructed fire line directly against the burning perimeter on the north, east, and south sides.  On the Inchelium Highway Fire, fire bosses slowed the fire’s spread while dozers constructed line on the majority of the northern flank, up and around to Hall Creek Road.  On the south flank crews worked from the highway and to the west, securing and improving fire lines.  On the Kewa Fields Fire, dozer operations were followed up by hand crew efforts to secure and protect structures. Crews remain focused on point protection with an emphasis on structures and natural and cultural resources.  The high demand for firefighting resources continues to be an issue within the region because of the critical fire weather. Inchelium Highway Fire (5,453 acres):  Crews will continue to work to reinforce, hold, and secure fire lines on all flanks. Air resources are available should they be needed to support ground forces.

Fry Fire (500 acres):  Efforts will focus on holding and securing the north, east, and south flanks, where fire lines were built directly against the burning edge of the fire.

Kewa Field Fire (8,881 acres):  Fire managers are looking for opportunities to secure the northeast corner.  With aviation resource support and additional heavy equipment, firefighters will be going direct where possible to construct line to the west towards Cougar Canyon.  Work will continue to look for control opportunities on the southwest flank.

Weather and Fire Behavior:  The weather is expected to remain dry and warm to mid 80s through the week, with light winds.  Fire behavior should be similar to yesterday with a potential for high intensity flare-ups and group tree torching as the fire moves across slopes and backs downhill.

Road Closures:  Seyler Valley Road to Silver Creek Road. Bridget Creek Road remains Open.

Inchelium Complex Update Sep 9 2020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Three fires actively burning in a mix of timber and brush on the Colville Indian Reservation comprise the Inchelium Complex: the Inchelium Highway Fire, Fry Fire and Kewa Field Fire. All three fires are being managed for full suppression. The cause of the fires remains under investigation.

At 6:00 a.m. today, Interagency Northwest Incident Management Team 7 with IC, Eric Knerr assumed management of the Inchelium Complex.

Current Situation: Fire managers are looking for opportunities to engage the fires in a full suppression strategy, while prioritizing firefighter and public safety and protecting values at risk. Crews remain focused on point protection with a focus on structures and natural and cultural resources. Aircraft stationed in Omak, WA will be used to help support suppression efforts when wildfire smoke clears enough to provide visibility. Critical fire weather being experienced in areas of the Pacific Northwest has led to a high demand for firefighting resources within the region.

Inchelium Highway Fire (2,500 acres): Crews were successful with constructing containment line around a large portion of the fire area yesterday. A reduced, Level 2 evacuation is in effect for residents near Hall Creek and Seyler Valley Road

Fry Fire (500 acres): Yesterday, firefighters’ efforts to focus on structure protection for homes in the Twin Lakes area and summer homes in the vicinity proved successful. Crews will continue to seek opportunities to construct and improve fire line today. A reduced, Level 2 evacuation is in effect for residents living near Twin Lakes and Meteor Road including North & South Twin.

Kewa Field Fire (5,000 acres):  Dozer line was constructed to contain the southern perimeter of the fire yesterday. Firefighters will continue to do point protection around structures today, while improving existing containment lines, particularly in Divisions R and M along the northern perimeter. This area remains under a Level 2 Evacuation for residents in Kewa Valley.

Weather and Fire Behavior:  A cold pressure system continues to move through the fire area, bringing high winds and low humidity. Today potential fire behavior may include areas of active surface fire spread where fuels are contiguous and some group tree torching.

Road Closures:  Seyler Valley Road to Silver Creek Road. Bridget Creek Road remains Open.
