The Texas A&M Forest Service is conducting a prescribed burn at the Lake Waco Wetlands in China Spring, TX. The burn is being conducted in coordination with TIFMAS and local cooperators. All 4 planning units will be burned today, with the goal of restoring the native grasses that have been impacted by willow and other woody plant encroachment. The operation also is being used to provide training to TFS and cooperator personnel, which will improve capacity for future incidents.
Prescribed fire provides multiple benefits including improved nutrient cycling, reduction of parasites of wildlife such as ticks and fleas, and promoting native grassland habitat. Burning also promotes fire adapted species and reduces fuel loads which helps reduce the risk of future wildfires and reduces their intensity.
As of 15:00 on 3/8/21, the burn is 50% complete with units 1 and 2 consumed in a mosaic pattern. Ignition of units 3 and 4 is under way. The operation is expected to be completed in a single day.
