Monument Fire and Knob Fire Morning Update Saturday September 11 2021
Related Incident:
Publication Type: News
COMMUNITY MEETINGS: Today, there will be two Monument Fire informational gatherings for the communities of Hyampom and Hayfork. The first will be at 11 A.M. at the Hyampom Fire Station (22547 Hyampom Road), and the second will be at 2 P.M. at the Hayfork Park (Community Drive).
MONUMENT FIRE:
Resources: 1,438 personnel, 26 hand crews, 85 engines, 9 helicopters, 29 dozers, 9 water tenders, 15 masticators
Current Situation: The Monument Fire is approximately 208,265 acres and 43 percent contained. Last night due to increased humidity and cooler temperatures, most areas around the fire’s perimeter saw minimal fire activity with the exception of the northwest side, east of Trinity Village. Crews conducted a defensible firing operation along the Denny Road near Dyer Creek towards Bell Creek to stop the advancing fire front.
Today, the priority is the northwest east of Trinity Village and in the southwest near Hayfork. West of Hayfork, crews continue working to execute the existing plan of utilizing the Butter Creek Road to contain the fire. When conditions allow this afternoon, a defensible firing operation will be implemented to remove unburned vegetation between the road and the advancing fire.
On the northwest side, the fire will become more active this morning due to prevailing winds and steep terrain. Crews will continue firing operations along the Denny Road and provide structure defense. A second portable fire-retardant base is being established for helicopters at Burnt Ranch. Helicopters will be able to fill large buckets with retardant, from tanks on the ground, and transport it more quickly to areas on the north side of the fire.
To the north, in the Trinity Alps Wilderness, the fire is currently 5 miles from the River Complex. There is no planned strategy to let the fires grow together. As firefighting resources become available, aggressive action will be taken to contain the fire.
On the fire’s northeast side, crews continue to strengthen the containment line from the East Fork Road up to Backbone Ridge. A finger of the fire crossed over the East Fork North Fork Trinity River and crews continue to work on building a containment line around the active fire. Structure defense engines continue to work in the Canyon Creek area.
KNOB FIRE:
Resources: 191 personnel, 4 hand crews, 28 engines, 2 dozers, 1 water tenders
Current Situation: The Knob Fire is approximately 2,421 acres and 98 percent contained. On the fire’s northwest perimeter, approximately a quarter-mile section of fire line along Panther Ridge remains the priority. Firefighters will continue to strengthen the fire line on Panther Ridge as well as patrol the fire perimeter, extinguishing any visible hot spots.
WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR: A more typical weather pattern is expected today as high pressure rebuilds over the area. A west-southwest flow aloft will increase temperatures and lower humidity.

Monument Fire and Knob Fire Evening Update Friday, September 10, 2021
COMMUNITY MEETINGS: Saturday, September 11, there will be two Monument Fire informational gatherings for the communities of Hyampom and Hayfork.
Current Situation: The Monument Fire is approximately 207,385 acres and 42 percent contained. The northwest side of fire has become increasingly active over the past three days, periodically spotting westward over rivers, roads, hand lines, and dozer lines. Crews have taken direct suppression action as weather conditions and access have allowed. However, today the fire got established in extremely dry vegetation in a drainage west of Byoff Road and made an upslope run, prompting the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office to issue an evacuation order, an evacuation warning, and a road closure for residents in areas along Denny Road and Trinity Village (see page 2). Ground crews initiated a defensive firing operation on the ridge above Dryer Creek eastward toward Bell Flats and received aerial support from helicopters dropping water and retardant. Structure-defense crews have been fully engaged in defending structures and will continue that effort through the night. Night-shift crews will hold and secure firelines by mopping up hotspots within the fireline and monitoring the unburned area for spot fires.
The north side of the fire burning in the Trinity Alps Wilderness is currently 5 miles from the River Complex. Fire managers from the two incidents are communicating daily; there is no planned strategy of letting the fires grow together. Although most resources are engaged in defending life and property elsewhere around the fire perimeter, firefighters did scout areas on the north side today, looking for locations where they could directly suppress the fire. There are very few options for them to safely do so, but suppression action will be initiated as resources become available and the threat to life and property decreases in other priority areas.
On the fire’s northeast side, options and locations for firefighters to use direct-suppression tactics east of Backbone Ridge are also limited, but they will directly engage the fire wherever they safely can. The plan to contain the fire on the east slopes of Backbone Ridge, bringing it within the primary containment line, is still viable. Structure-defense crews and engines are working around structures in Canyon Creek.
The southwest side of the fire near Hayfork was slightly less active today than anticipated. Weather over the past 24 hours has provided a reprieve, allowing crews to further secure their foothold and increasing their confidence that they will be able to hold the fire west of Hayfork. However, they will remain vigilant through the night, extinguish hotspots along the fireline and holding the gains the crews made on day shift.
KNOB FIRE:
Resources: 191 personnel, 4 hand crews, 28 engines, 2 dozers, 1 water tenders
Current Situation: The Knob Fire is approximately 2,421 acres and 95 percent contained. On the fire’s northwest perimeter, approximately a half-mile section of fireline along Panther Ridge and in the Bloody Nose Creek drainage remains uncontained. However, containment is steadily increasing as firefighters methodically extinguish burning or smoldering vegetation within 300 feet or more from the fireline. Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office lifted some evacuation warnings today (see below). Firefighters are continuing to monitor and patrol the fire perimeter throughout the night.
WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR: Temperatures generally less than 80 degrees, relative humidity in the 20 percent range, and mostly light winds provided some relief from the persistent hot, dry weather. Crews working on the fire overnight will not have to contend with weather conditions that challenge containment. Fire behavior analysts advised that direct fire-suppression tactics will be possible and effective. A warming and drying trend is expected over the fire area in the coming days however, and the vegetation remains extremely dry. The fire activity on the northwest side today is an example of the potential that remains on the landscape with critically dry vegetation.

MONUMENT FIRE:
Resources: 1,525 personnel, 26 hand crews, 83 engines, 9 helicopters, 37 dozers, 9 water tenders, 15 masticators
Current Situation: The Monument Fire is approximately 204,436 acres and 45 percent contained. Yesterday’s Red Flag warning expired this morning, and weather conditions should be more favorable today. Widespread smoke and cloud cover through mid-afternoon will have a moderating effect on fire behavior. Fire activity is expected to increase this afternoon as the sun burns off last night’s moisture.
Last night the fire was active in the northwest near Hoboken and on the south, southwest side near Hayfork. Around midnight, rain began to fall on some areas of the fire, decreasing and moderating fire behavior. Weather stations in the area reported one-tenth to two-tenths of an inch of rain. Near Hoboken, crews continued through the night protecting structures and working on two spot fires between Bell Creek and New River. Near Hayfork crews continued to work on improving the containment line along Butter Creek Road to stop the fire from advancing to the west.
Today, on the south and southwest side of the fire near Hayfork, the US Forest Service and CAL FIRE will continue coordinating and executing a defensible firing operation and strengthening firelines along Butter Creek Road. The goal is to bring the containment line eastward and connect it to the dozer line that was constructed west of town. Along Pattison Ridge, crews continue to improve containment lines south toward the Bar 717 Ranch. If conditions allow, a firing operation will be initiated to remove unburned vegetation between Pattison Ridge and the active fire front.
On northwest side, near the Hoboken area, structure-protection firefighters and equipment remain in place. The fire has crossed to the westside of Byoff Road. Firefighters will look for opportunities to build direct containment lines to stop the advancing fire.
On the northeast side where the fire crossed Backbone Ridge and burned downslope to the East Fork Road north of Barney Gulch, the fire’s forward progression was slowed as it burned into the 2020 Hobo Fire. Firefighters are looking to utilize direct-suppression tactics (line construction at the fire’s edge), and bring that fire back into current containment lines. Structure-protection crews are working along the East Fork Road and in Canyon Creek.
KNOB FIRE:
Resources: 183 personnel, 3 hand crews, 28 engines, 2 water tenders
Current Situation: The Knob Fire is approximately 2,421 acres and 95 percent contained. Last night fire activity was minimal due to cooler temperatures and higher humidity. Today, crews continue to look for, and extinguish any burning or smoldering vegetation (trees, burning stumps, etc.) near the fire’s perimeter. Crews continue to strengthen containment lines along Panther Ridge and in Bloody Nose Creek drainage.
WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR: Cooler temperatures and improved relative humidity in the 20 percent range is expected in the wake of yesterday’s weather system. Breezy conditions are expected this afternoon with gusts around 20 miles per hour.

Monument Fire and Knob Fire Evening Update
Thursday, September 9, 2021
MONUMENT FIRE:
Resources: 1,525 personnel, 26 hand crews, 83 engines, 9 helicopters, 37 dozers, 9 water tenders, 15 masticators
Current Situation: The Monument Fire is approximately 204,436 acres and 45 percent contained. Widespread smoke and heavy cloud cover today somewhat reduced fire behavior, giving firefighters an opportunity to successfully hold various hand and dozer lines around the fire perimeter and, notably, keep the fire from advancing east into Hayfork. During Wednesday’s night shift, CAL FIRE and Forest Service personnel initiated a multi-day planned and coordinated firing operation to protect Hayfork and Hyampom. The effort has so far proven successful as day-shift crews improved, secured, and held firelines Thursday. Although active throughout this afternoon and evening, the fire did not make long runs or exhibit extreme fire behavior.
On the fire’s northwest side, near Hoboken, crews continued to protect structures and suppress two spot fires between Bell Creek and New River. Structure-protection firefighters and equipment will remain in place throughout the night. On the northeast side where the fire crossed Backbone Ridge and burned downslope to the East Fork Road north of Barney Gulch, the fire’s forward progression was slowed as it burned into the 2020 Hobo Fire. Firefighters will possibly be able to use direct-suppression tactics and construct fireline around it in such a way that brings that fire back into current containment lines. The goal is to minimize the fire’s spread and make indirect-suppression unnecessary. Structure-protection crews are working along the East Fork Road and in Canyon Creek.
The south and southwest side of the fire near Hayfork remains the priority area tonight. Firefighters will maintain a robust presence on the western outskirts of Hayfork to ensure that previous defensive firing operations continue to hold the fire west of the town. Further south and westward, crews will continue to work along Butter Creek Road in an effort to make the firelines a strong and secure defense against the fire making an eastward push into Hayfork.
KNOB FIRE:
Resources: 183 personnel, 3 hand crews, 28 engines, 2 water tenders
Current Situation: The Knob Fire is approximately 2,421 acres and 92 percent contained. Fire behavior today was minimal on the uncontained northwest edge of the fire, and crews proceeded with the direct fire-suppression mission along Panther Ridge and in the Bloody Nose Creek drainage. Each day, firefighters are observing less smoke coming from the fire’s interior, and the scattered heat sources that remain—smoldering stumps, for example—are at least 1,000 feet from containment lines. The probability that firebrands will be carried far enough to ignite vegetation outside containment lines is steadily decreasing. Firefighters anticipate achieving full containment in the coming days. Crews will continue to patrol and monitor the fire perimeter throughout the night for a few more shifts.
WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR: Abundant smoke and clouds blanketed the fire area today, which moderated temperatures, resulted in more favorable relative humidity levels than expected, and had a decidedly inhibiting effect on fire activity and growth. However, the vegetation remains very dry, and winds were gusty this afternoon, so fire behavior, while not extreme, was active. Thunderstorms, and the gusty, erratic outflow winds associated with them, remain a challenge that the night shift will have to contend with. A Red Flag Warning remains in effect through 5 A.M. Friday.

Monument Fire and Knob Fire Morning Update Thursday September 9 2021
Related Incident:
Publication Type: News
MONUMENT FIRE:
Resources: 1,796 personnel, 40 hand crews, 97 engines, 9 helicopters, 46 dozers, 32 water tenders, 15 masticators
Current Situation: The Monument Fire is approximately 201,968 acres and 45 percent contained.
Today, critical fire weather is predicted and a Red Flag Warning will go into effect this afternoon through tomorrow morning for gusty outflow winds, thunderstorms and dry lightning. These conditions have the potential to significantly increase fire growth around the perimeter of the Monument Fire. Residents in the vicinity of the fire area should be prepared to respond to changing conditions.
Last night, the fire continued to burn in Drinkwater Gulch, the headwaters of West Tule Creek, northwest from Jud Creek to Halfway Ridge, southeast of Pasture Gulch, and in Hayfork Creek. To stop the fire from advancing east toward Hayfork, night-shift crews completed a defensive firing operation along containment lines from Drinkwater Gulch bridge to Shangri La Lane. They also started a firing operation along Butter Creek Road/FS Road 3N08 westward. On Pattison Ridge, the fire spotted over the Pattison Peak Cutoff and crews worked to get containment lines around them. On the northwest perimeter, the fire spotted on the west side of New River and crews initiated a defensive firing operation around the structures in Hoboken. On the northeast side, the fire crossed Backbone Ridge and East Fork North Fork Trinity River north of Barney Gulch, and crews continue to look for opportunities to build containment lines.
Today is a critical day for firefighters who will be challenged by extreme fire behavior. Critically low fuel moistures, steep, inaccessible terrain, and gusty outflow winds from potential thunderstorms will result in increased fire activity and the potential for spotting up to one mile ahead of the fire front. The active fire front, burning west of Hayfork continues to be the highest priority as crews work to strengthen containment lines. Firefighters will continue defensive fire operations westward along Butter Creek Road/FS Road 3N08, as conditions allow. They will also work to contain the new spot fires that started last night, south of the Pattison Peak Cutoff. On the northeast side, the predicted weather and the alignment of the New River drainage sets up the area for significant fire growth. Crews will continue structure protection in Hoboken and defensive firing operations, if conditions allow. On the northeast side, steep and inaccessible terrain along with gusty winds will continue to push the fire north in East Fork North Fork Trinity River drainage. Crews continue to look for opportunities to construct containment lines around the narrow finger and to connect it back to Backbone Ridge. Crews will also be in Canyon Creek looking for opportunities to improve structure defense in the area.
KNOB FIRE:
Resources: 210 personnel, 6 hand crews, 30 engines, 2 dozers, 2 water tenders
Current Situation: The Knob Fire is approximately 2,421 acres and 92 percent contained.
Fire behavior was minimal last night and fire managers are cautiously optimistic that the fire will not move out of its current perimeter. Today, Firefighters will continue to patrol and mop up, watching for any possible flare ups as vegetation continues to burn within the fire’s perimeter.
WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR: A disturbance pushing in off the coast will bring an influx of monsoonal moisture to Northern California today. Locally breezy conditions are expected in the early afternoon with gusts around 15-20 MPH. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible after 2 P.M. bringing lighting and gusty winds. Little to no appreciable rainfall is expected. Based on these conditions, Incident Meteorologists have issued a local Fire Weather Watch from 2 P.M. today though 5 A.M on Friday.

Monument Fire and Knob Fire Evening Update
Wednesday, September 8, 2021
MONUMENT FIRE:
Resources: 1,796 personnel, 40 hand crews, 97 engines, 9 helicopters, 46 dozers, 32 water tenders, 15 masticators
Current Situation: The Monument Fire is approximately 198,829 acres and 45 percent contained. Although Wednesday’s weather was slightly less hot, dry, and windy than Tuesday’s Red Flag conditions, it did not have a correspondingly beneficial effect on fire behavior. The southwest area of the fire was very active west of Hayfork, resulting in the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office issuing additional evacuation orders (see below). This evening, when night-shift crews received their briefing, the fire had advanced to Drinkwater Gulch and became established in the headwaters of West Tule Creek. It also spread northwestward from Jud Creek to Halfway Ridge. Southeast of Pasture Gulch, the fire has reached Hayfork Creek in several places. Helicopters assisted firefighters throughout the day with retardant and water drops. To prevent the fire from advancing unimpeded further east toward Hayfork, night-shift crews are prepared to conduct defensive firing operations—if conditions are favorable—from Drinkwater Gulch bridge, south to Butter Creek Road, and approximately 2 miles west along Butter Creek Road.
Further west toward Hyampom, crews successfully held the fire on the east side of Pattison Ridge as it advanced south toward Hayfork Creek in the drainage of West Fork Miners Creek. Throughout the night, firefighters will mop up hotspots and secure the fireline. On the northwest perimeter, the fire spotted to the west side of New River this afternoon. If they can do so safely, crews will attempt to suppress and contain the spot fires tonight. The northern portion of the fire that is burning in the Trinity Alps Wilderness is only moderately active, not making long runs, which is largely due to the high elevation and noncontinuous vegetation. On the northeast side, the fire crossed Backbone Ridge and East Fork North Fork Trinity River in one area north of Barney Gulch. Crews continue to staff that area and are attempting to contain the narrow finger of fire, bringing it back into the primary containment lines.
KNOB FIRE:
Resources: 210 personnel, 6 hand crews, 30 engines, 2 dozers, 2 water tenders
Current Situation: The Knob Fire is approximately 2,421 acres and 92 percent contained. Fire behavior was minimal today, and the main fire did not spot outside containment lines. Crews have been suppressing the fire directly from hand and dozer lines in the northwest corner along Panther Ridge and Bloody Nose Creek. They are steadily containing the fire that is burning in very steep, difficult-to-access terrain. Smoke may be visible near the fire perimeter as pockets of unburned vegetation in the fire’s interior continue to burn and periodically flare up. While the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office downgraded the remaining evacuation order to a warning today (see below), it is still possible that embers from the fire’s interior could be carried by wind outside containment lines. Therefore, people in the vicinity should remain ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice. Crews continue to patrol and monitor the fire perimeter at night.
WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR: Temperatures will be slightly cooler than Tuesday night, but overnight humidity recovery will remain poor. Fire behavior is expected to remain active into the night and with a high potential for spot fires.
