Information Phone: 970-834-3373

Email: 2021.blackmountain.co@firenet.gov

Information Staffing Hours: 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM

Special Note: Daily updates will no longer be provided for the Black Mountain Fire. Future updates will be issued pending changes in fire behavior, information or operations. We will continue to post timely information on the fire’s InciWeb page at https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/7825/

Current Situation:  Containment is now at 91% on the Black Mountain Fire. The added containment is on the west edge, where for several days, firefighters have methodically been clearing debris, putting out hot spots and carefully checking for heat.

The one remaining section of uncontained edge is located on the southeast "finger" of the fire. It is a steep, rocky rim containing thick patches of hazard trees. The area is not currently accessible because of safety concerns. Fire activity has been minimal near that edge, but there are some hot spots.   Firefighters will continue to use helicopter water drops to cool off any flare-ups, and they will look for opportunities to safely engage the edge.

Today is the Medbow-Routt Type 3 team’s final day on the fire. Tomorrow command of the fire will be turned over to a local Type 4 Team. This is a full suppression fire. Firefighting efforts will not stop until 100% containment is reached.

Weather Conditions:  A chance of rain showers in the morning and thunderstorms with erratic, gusty winds in the afternoon. The high temperature will be around 66 degrees.

Evacuations, Closures, and Fire Restrictions:  Two zones in rural Grand County near Parshall remain in pre-evacuation status. For specific information in Grand County visit: https://gcgeo.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=ca4f74421b69416da9be1b9b92166534

Current Situation:  Firefighters have added new containment along the north edge of the Black Mountain Fire. Containment is now at 69%, and there has been no growth in the fire perimeter.
Yesterday, crews on Division C worked sections of the line, carefully checking for heat, looking for smoke, and extinguishing hot spots. They’ll continue that effort today as they look to add more containment on the west edge. All current firefighting tactics revolve around a full suppression strategy.
While fire activity was minimal yesterday, infrared data from a Multi-Mission Aircraft did pick up some isolated pockets of heat within the fire perimeter. Today crews will scout those areas and take action, where needed. Weather will be a fire concern today, as temperatures continue to increase and humidity levels drop. Firefighters will be prepared to respond to any increased fire activity.

Weather Conditions:
The high temperature will be 78 degrees over the fire area. Breezy afternoon winds will include gusts to 18 mph. Humidity levels will drop to as low as 9%.

Evacuations, Closures, and Fire Restrictions:

Special Note: Smoke and haze in Grand County is being caused by west coast fires. Smoke coming from fire activity on the Black Mountain Fire has been minimal.

Current Situation:  Containment has increased to 61%, and there has been no growth in the fire perimeter. Yesterday firefighters in both Divisions X and C worked with helicopters to cool hot spots.  In Division X near the eastern edge, crews hiked in and cleared debris away from burning logs, which allowed the helicopter to drop buckets of water directly on the logs.  Later in Division C, a similar situation occurred. Firefighters discovered a flare-up within a pocket of downed trees burning inside the western edge and they worked with a helicopter to douse the burning material.
Hot, dry weather continues to make fuels more susceptible to burning, and today firefighters are prepared to respond to any aggressive fire activity as needed. Crews in Division C will be working to add containment along the western edge of the fire. Air Operations will work to provide helicopter support for firefighters in both divisions, as needed.

Weather Conditions:  Elevated fire weather conditions continue today. The high temperature over the fire area will be 76 degrees. Relative humidity will drop to as low as 9%. Breezy afternoon winds with gusts to 20 mph.

Information Staffing Hours: 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM

Current Situation:
Firefighters have now contained the entire south edge of the Black Mountain Fire.  Total containment has increased to 58%.  Data from a new Multi-Mission Aircraft flight showed the size of the fire increased by 2 acres and is now 418 acres.

Yesterday crews continued work to build line and extinguish hot spots on the north edge of the fire. Air Operations assisted a helitack crew near the break between Divisions C and X with water drops.  The crew on the ground directed the helicopter to hot spots, and then after the water drop they went in and worked the area with hand tools.  On the eastern “finger” of the fire, the north edge of the fire is extremely steep and inaccessible. With warm, dry and windy conditions in the afternoon, hot spots were detected.  Helicopters made several water drops to cool down fire activity. Today fire managers will continue to use helicopters to keep any hot spots in check on the steep north edge of the finger. Weather conditions will again be dry and windy in the afternoon.  Hand crews will also be working the edge of the fire in other locations, looking to increase containment.

Weather Conditions:
The warm, dry trend continues. The high temperature will be 74 degrees over the fire area, with a 10% minimum relative humidity. Winds will gust up to 21 mph this afternoon.

Current Situation:  Containment has jumped to 48%.  The new containment includes a section of the edge along Round Gulch, and another stretch of line further east, near the southern tip of the “finger”.  Also yesterday, the Heavy Equipment Task Force used dozers to move debris and improve secondary line just off the eastern edge designed to limit any possible future fire growth. The Incident Management Team also sent firefighters and three Type 6 engines to assist with a new fire start. The fire was located in a hay field about 2 miles southwest of the Black Mountain Fire. Flames were knocked down within an hour and the fire was extinguished. Today firefighters will look to make more containment gains along the western and southern edges of the fire. Fire behavior has been limited, but fire danger will be elevated by warmer weather, low humidity and gusty afternoon winds. Aerial Operations will be ready to support firefighters on the ground with water drops from the air, where needed.

Weather Conditions:
Today’s high temperature will be 73 degrees over the fire area. Relative humidity will drop to 11%. Afternoon winds out of the southwest will include gusts of up to 26 mph.

Firefighters continue to make steady progress as they directly engage the fire’s edge. Containment has increased to 35%. The additional containment was added along the northern and southwest edges of the fire, as well as along a section of the “finger” on the east side. Data from a new Multi-Mission Aircraft (MMA) flight showed the fire remains at 416 acres.

Fire activity increased yesterday within the fire perimeter as warm, dry weather returned.  Helicopters were used for water drops to cool hot spots and prevent fire spread.  Heavy Equipment crews completed secondary dozer line just outside the eastern edge designed to help keep any potential future fire growth boxed in.
Today firefighters will continue to work the edge where it can be safely accessed, looking to add more containment. Aerial resources will be available to assist firefighters on the ground, when needed.

Current Situation: Investigators announced yesterday that lightning caused the Black Mountain Fire. Using photos and video of the fire along with mapping technology as guides, investigators located the tree that sustained the lightning strike.

Containment has increased to 21%. With fire activity reduced yesterday because of recent rainfall, crews took the opportunity to work the fire’s edge on several fronts.  The additional containment was added along the south edge of the fire.  Just off the eastern “finger” of the fire, heavy equipment crews used dozers to create secondary line as part of the plan to ensure limited fire spread.

Today with warmer, windier weather, fire activity is expected to increase. Firefighters will continue efforts to add containment. Aerial Operations will provide support with helicopter water drops to cool hot spots where needed.

Weather Conditions: Sunny, breezy conditions return to the fire area today. The high temperature will be in the upper 60’s.
