Monument Fire and Knob Fire Morning Update Wednesday September 8 2021
Related Incident:
Publication Type: News
MONUMENT FIRE:
Resources: 2,034 personnel, 31 hand crews, 120 engines, 8 helicopters, 48 dozers, 34 water tenders, 15 masticators
Current Situation: The Monument Fire is approximately 189,366 acres and 41% contained. Yesterday’s Red Flag conditions, with extreme heat, low humidity, and increased winds, contributed to active fire behavior and substantial growth in the fire’s perimeter toward Drinkwater Gulch west of Hayfork, and on the north side, along the North Fork Trinity River.
Last night, west of HayFork, the fire continued to burn actively until 2 A.M., moving into Rusch Creek, Drinkwater Gulch, and toward Tule Creek. Firefighters worked throughout the night to protect and defend structures in the area. On the north side, the fire continued to back downslope to New River near Hoboken. The fire also crossed the North Fork Trinity River and the East Fork of North Fork Road near Barney Gulch.
Today, the priority will be the active fire front burning northwest of Hayfork. Crews will continue to protect and defend structures in the area as well as improve the contingency lines south of Drinkwater Gulch which have become the primary containment lines. Fire activity is likely to increase this afternoon after 2 P.M. with predicted gusty winds. Increased winds have the potential to blow hot embers in front of the main fire which will challenge firefighters. Crews will also continue to strengthen fire lines south of Pattison Ridge. A firing operation will be conducted from Pattison Ridge south to Hyampon Creek to strengthen control lines and stop the fire from advancing to the west. A top priority is to keep the fire east of Bar 717 Ranch. Air tankers and helicopters will be used to drop retardant and water on the advancing fire and hots spots that become established.
On the north side of the fire, crews will continue to monitor fire activity in New River around Hoboken and take actions as necessary. In the North Fork Trinity River area, crews will work to construct containment line around the active fire front that is burning near the Barney Gulch area. Smoke will cover the entire area which should help moderate fire activity.
KNOB FIRE:
Resources: 208 personnel, 6 hand crews, 30 engines, 2 dozers, 2 water tenders
Current Situation: The Knob Fire is approximately 2,421 acres and 89% contained.
Fire behavior was minimal throughout the night with increased humidity and cooler temperatures. Today, unburned islands of vegetation will continue to burn within the perimeter of the fire, and crews will be on the lookout for any hot embers, carried by winds, that may start new spot fires.
WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR: Today, incident meteorologists are predicting a slight reprieve from yesterday’s high temperatures and low relative humidity. Gusty winds after 2 P.M. will increase fire activity and challenge control efforts.

MONUMENT FIRE:
Resources: 2,034 personnel, 31 hand crews, 120 engines, 8 helicopters, 48 dozers, 34 water tenders, 15 masticators
Current Situation: The Monument Fire is approximately 185,919 acres and 42% contained. As expected, the fire was very active today on the southwest side, which is east of Hyampom and west of Hayfork, and on the north side, which is primarily in the Trinity Alps Wilderness.
On the southwest side, the fire that spotted south of Hyampom Road yesterday afternoon near Nine-Mile Bridge became established in the Jud Creek drainage and grew substantially southeastward to Drinkwater Gulch and Bar Gulch. While clear skies contributed to the increase in fire behavior, it did allowed for air operations. A majority of helicopters have relocated to Hayfork, making it the primary helibase for the incident. Air attack and four large airtankers commenced flying early today and, along with several helicopters, assisted ground crews with water and retardant drops along contingency lines west of Hayfork. Crews succeeded in holding Pattison Ridge as they carefully and methodically continued their southward progression toward Hyampom Road. The fire continues its downslope and westward advance but has not crossed West Fork Miners Creek. A robust structure-protection plan was activated, and firefighters will continue to work around and protect structures west of Hayfork through the night.
The north side of the fire was also active in numerous areas today. Specifically, two spot fires were detected late this afternoon on the east side of the North Fork Trinity River but fire has not crossed Backbone Ridge. Firefighters and equipment are positioned on Backbone Ridge and East Fork Road, preparing to hold the fire west of the ridge.
KNOB FIRE:
Resources: 208 personnel, 6 hand crews, 30 engines, 2 dozers, 2 water tenders
Current Situation: The Knob Fire is approximately 2,421 acres and 89% contained. Today, firefighters on the uncontained northwest portion of the fire continued to directly suppress the fire along hand line and dozer line, making steady progress toward full containment. Tonight, as crews patrol and monitor the perimeter, the primary vulnerability remains the potential for spot fires to cross containment lines. As a result of the southern and western containment lines holding for several days, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office downgraded two evacuation orders to evacuation warnings (see below).
WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR: The Red Flag Warning conditions predicted by incident meteorologists did materialize today: temperatures around the southwestern portion of the fire reached triple digits, relative humidity remained in the single digits for many hours, and winds increased early in the afternoon, gusting up to 45 miles per hour. As the fire behavior analysts also anticipated, the fire did respond to weather conditions and moved significantly, aggressively backing downslope and running upslope. The fire is expected to remain active well into the night, and achieving containment under existing conditions will be difficult.

RETURNING HOME FROM AFTER A WILDFIRE
Once a wildfire has burned through or near an area, many dangers
can remain. Firefighters and utility workers begin restoring fire damaged areas
as soon as they can. It is important to be aware of the hazards and know what
to look for once an evacuation order is lifted.
1. When driving, watch for trees,
brush and rocks which may have been weakened or loosened by fire weather and
response. Be aware of debris or damage to roadways.
2. Inspect your home: check for
the smell of gas and use a battery-powered flashlight to check for hot embers
in rain gutters, on the roof, under overhangs, under decks and crawl spaces,
wood and debris piles and attic.
3. If electricity is off, make
sure all appliances are off before turning power back on. If there are any
electrical wires on the ground, stay clear and contact your utility company
immediately.
4. Discard any food that has been
exposed to heat, smoke or soot.
5. Use a hose or wet towels to wet
down and wipe off ash rather than sweeping or blowing it back into the air,
creating unhealthy conditions.
6. Consider replacing all filters
in your home and vehicle.
7. To rid your home of the smell
of smoke, attach filters to box fans, cover with a wet towel doused in fabric
softener and allow them to run to filter the air.

Monument Fire and Knob Fire Morning Update Tuesday September 7 2021
Related Incident:
Publication Type: News
MONUMENT FIRE:
Resources: 2,466 personnel, 35 hand crews, 164 engines, 4 helicopters, 45 dozers, 36 water tenders, 15 masticators
Current Situation: The Monument Fire is approximately 185,505 acres and 41% contained. Within the fire perimeter, two areas remain the focus: the north side, which is primarily in the Trinity Alps Wilderness, and the southwest side, which is east of Hyampom and northwest of Hayfork. Suppression efforts are being implemented to protect the Trinity Alps Wilderness, the Trinity Wild and Scenic River, Inventoried Roadless Areas, and endangered species habitat.
Yesterday, the fire progressed downslope toward James Creek and Hyampom Road at a moderate pace. It reached Hyampom Road at a couple points east of Nine-Mile Bridge, where crews were positioned to hold the fire. However, weather conditions worsened and winds increased, causing the fire to spot in several locations south of Hyampom Road. Firefighters were able to suppress and contain most of the spot fires, but one became established south of Nine-Mile Bridge and is estimated to be around 300 acres.
Today, the highest priority will be to construct a containment line around the 300-acre spot fire south of Nine-Mile Bridge and to protect any structures south of Hyampom Road. Crews will also continue to work on Pattison Ridge securing containment lines and conducting firing operations toward Hayfork Creek. A mobile fire-retardant base has been established and is available to help fire suppression efforts along the southwest fire perimeter. As the smoke lifts, helicopters will be utilized to drop retardant and water in active fire areas. On the northern perimeter, gusty winds are predicted this afternoon which will increase fire activity in the area below Thurston Peak in the Trinity Alps Wilderness. Firefighters will continue to work on improving contingency lines along Backbone Ridge. The North Fork Trinity River is located in a deep drainage, sheltered from the wind, which has moderated fire activity. The fire had not crossed to the east side of the river. Containment line elsewhere around the fire perimeter continues to be monitored and patrolled.
KNOB FIRE:
Resources: 229 personnel, 7 hand crews, 30 engines, 2 dozers, 2 water tenders
Current Situation: The Knob Fire is approximately 2,414 acres and 89% contained. Last night fire behavior was minimal, with no spotting outside of the fire perimeter. Today, crews will continue to work on the north side strengthening and improving containment lines and extinguishing any hotspots within 300 feet of the perimeter of the fire.
WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR: Poor overnight humidity recovery and extremely dry, hot weather will persist through today. These conditions, combined with today’s gusty winds, have led incident meteorologists to issue a local Red Flag Warning that is in effect from 10 A.M. to 8 P.M. Incident firebehavior analysists have cautioned fire managers and crews that they will see atmospheric instability; hot, dry weather; winds aligning with topography; and dry vegetation, which will result in moderate to extreme fire behavior. Firefighters have been cautioned to expect long-range spotting and crown fires, particularly on the fire’s north side.

MONUMENT FIRE:
Resources: 2,466 personnel, 35 hand crews, 164 engines, 4 helicopters, 45 dozers, 36 water tenders, 15 masticators
Current Situation: The Monument Fire is approximately 184,142 acres and 41% contained. Two areas of the fire remain active: the north side, which is primarily in the Trinity Alps Wilderness Area, and the southwest side, which is east of Hyampom. While suppression efforts are being implemented to protect the Trinity Alps Wilderness Area, the Trinity Wild and Scenic River, Inventoried Roadless areas, and endangered species habitat, the highest priority remains the southwest side. Numerous resources are positioned near Hyampom to protect structures and make every effort to halt the fire’s southward advance toward Hayfork Creek and Hyampom Road.
On Sunday, hotshot crews initiated a multi-day firing operation east of Hyampom as a tactic to slow the fire’s spread southward and westward. Crews are conducting the firing operations in two areas: along Pattison Ridge and on the ridge north of James Creek, east of Nine-Mile Bridge. On Monday afternoon, the fire progressed downslope toward James Creek and Hyampom Road at a moderate pace. It reached Hyampom Road at a couple points east of Nine-Mile Bridge where crews were in position to hold the fire north of the road. However, as weather conditions worsened late afternoon, the fire spotted south of Hyampom Road in approximately eight locations. Firefighters were able to suppress and contain most of the spot fires, but one became established south of Nine-Mile Bridge and advanced upslope. Initial estimates are that the spot fire south of Hyampom Road is approximately 80 acres. Skies adequately cleared Monday afternoon, allowing two helicopters to assist ground crews with water drops. Firefighters also have a mobile retardant base near Hyampom that is operational and ready to support them should retardant be needed as a fire-suppression tool. The active southwest area of the fire will be the priority for crews working through the night. On the northern perimeter, the fire was active in Big French Creek. On the northeast side, aerial observers confirmed that the fire remains west of the North Fork Trinity River and Backbone Ridge. Resources continued to clear and widen handlines constructed along Backbone Ridge. Contained fireline elsewhere around the fire perimeter continues to be monitored and patrolled.
KNOB FIRE:
Resources: 229 personnel, 7 hand crews, 30 engines, 2 dozers, 2 water tenders
Current Situation: The Knob Fire is approximately 2,414 acres and 89% contained. Despite today’s very hot, dry conditions, crews observed minimal fire behavior, limited primarily to isolated, low-intensity surface fire well within containment lines on the east, south, and west sides of the fire. Although uncontained, the fireline on the north side is holding, and crews are methodically extinguishing all hotspots they discover within 300 feet of the perimeter. Crews will vigilantly monitor and patrol the fire’s perimeter overnight, allowing them to quickly respond should the fire threaten the containment lines.
WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR: Poor overnight humidity recovery and extremely dry, hot weather will persist through Tuesday. Such conditions, combined with tomorrow’s anticipated gusty winds, have led incident meteorologists to issue a local red flag warning that will be in effect Tuesday from 10 A.M. to 8 P.M. Incident fire-behavior analysists have cautioned fire managers and crews that Tuesday’s atmospheric instability; hot, dry weather; winds aligning with topography; and dry vegetation could result in moderate to extreme fire behavior. For example, increased lofting of embers leading to long-range spotting and crown fire, particularly on the fire’s north side, are possible.

MONUMENT FIRE:
Resources: 2,053 personnel, 37 hand crews, 126 engines, 4 helicopters, 38 dozers, 42 water tenders, 30 masticators
Current Situation: The Monument Fire is approximately 183,371 acres and 37% contained. Suppression efforts will be implemented to protect the values within the Trinity Alps Wilderness, the Trinity Wild and Scenic River, Inventoried Roadless areas and habitat for anadromous fish and other endangered and sensitive species. With control objectives achieved around the Hayfork area, the fire will no longer be in Unified Command. California Incident Management Team 5 will continue to coordinate suppression efforts with CAL FIRE’s Shasta Unit. CAL FIRE resources will continue patrolling and mopping up in the Hayfork area.
As containment increases on the Knob Fire, fire managers will shift firefighting resources to the southwest perimeter of the Monument Fire. The highest priority will be to secure the containment line along Hyampom Road. Over the next 5 to 7 days, hotshot crews will be conducting firing operations along Hyampom Road in order to reduce the available fuel in front of the advancing fire. The firing operations will intermittently restrict vehicle access into Hyampom.
Today, on the southwest perimeter, crews continue to improve containment lines along Hyampom Road for the planned firing operation. They are also working along Pattison Ridge to keep the fire in check as it moves downslope towards the Hyampom Road. On the northeast side at the North Fork Trinity River, resources continue to complete a section of handline along Backbone Ridge. The fire has not crossed to the eastern bank of the North Fork Trinity River and crews will continue to monitor fire activity. In all other areas of the fire, crews will continue to monitor and patrol existing containment lines and extinguish any hot spots.
KNOB FIRE:
Resources: 222 personnel, 7 hand crews, 23 engines, 3 dozers, 2 water tenders.
Current Situation: The Knob Fire is approximately 2,414 acres and 82% contained. Fire behavior was minimal throughout the night and crews continued to patrol and mop up hot spots within the existing containment lines.
Today, crews will continue to strengthen existing containment lines and patrol for any hot spots 300 feet within the fire perimeter area.
WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR: A strengthening high pressure system remains over the area bringing hotter and drier conditions. Ridgetop temperatures may reach 90 degrees and humidity will be in the single digits. These conditions, combined with expected wind gusts of 20 mph, have the potential to increase fire activity.

Monument North Zone Fire and Knob Fire Evening Update September 5 2021
Related Incident:
Publication Type: News
MONUMENT FIRE RESOURCES: 2,053 personnel, 37 hand crews, 126 engines, 4 helicopters, 38 dozers, 42 water tenders, 30 masticators
KNOB FIRE RESOURCES: 222 personnel, 7 hand crews, 23 engines, 3 dozers, 2 water tenders.
CURRENT SITUATION: The Monument Fire is approximately 181,617 acres and 37% contained. The Knob Fire is approximately 2,414 acres and 82% contained. The priority for night-shift crews on the Knob Fire is to patrol and monitor the fire’s perimeter and suppress spot fires that could occur on the uncontained north side. The priority for crews on the Monument Fire tonight is the southwest side, where they will monitor and hold the fire north of Hyampom Road.
Monument Fire North Zone: Today, the fire did not cross any containment or check lines. Fire activity increased on the north side due to drier and hotter weather. The fire is getting active earlier in the morning and staying active later into the evening. In the next few days, the fire could be aggressive, and the chance of ignition from flying embers is high.
On the western side from New River to Denny, crews continued to monitor and improved containment lines. At the North Fork Trinity River, resources completed a section of handline along Backbone Ridge. Dead and down trees are generating a lot of interior heat that is detected on the overnight infrared flights. The fire has not crossed to the eastern bank of the North Fork Trinity River.
On the southern side, the fire remains north of Hyampom Road and containment lines are holding. The fire is slowly, but intensely, backing downslope toward Hyampom Road. Crews improved containment lines created for last night’s strategic firing operations. As smoke conditions allow, air resources are assisting ground crews with water drops. Crews continued to prepare the area for strategic firing operations.
Tonight, as conditions allow, crews may conduct strategic firing operations in the West Fork of Miners Creek and westward along Hyampom Road. These operations will reduce the available fuel in front of the advancing fire and improve containment lines.
Monument Fire South Zone (including Weaverville, Hayfork, and Junction City): Go to the CAL FIRE Shasta-Trinity Unit Facebook page: www.facebook.com/CALFIRESHU.
WEATHER: A strengthening high pressure system remains over the area. In the coming days, ridgetop temperatures may reach 90 degrees and humidity will be in the single digits. These conditions, combined with expected wind gusts of 20 mph, could increase fire activity.

Monument North Zone Fire and Knob Fire Morning Update September 5 2021
Related Incident:
Publication Type: News
MONUMENT FIRE RESOURCES: 2,223 personnel, 41 hand crews, 125 engines, 5 helicopters, 39 dozers, 42 water tenders, 29 masticators
KNOB FIRE RESOURCES: 228 personnel, 7 hand crews, 23 engines, 4 dozers, 2 water tenders.
COMMUNITY MEETING: Today, at 3:00 P.M., fire managers will provide an update on the Monument Fire at a community gathering at the Hyampom Volunteer Fire Station, 22547 Hyampom Road, Hyampom, CA.
CURRENT SITUATION: The Monument Fire is approximately 179,276 acres and 35% contained. The Knob Fire is approximately 2,414 acres and 82% contained. The priority with the Knob Fire is to keep the uncontained north side within its current perimeter by directly suppressing the fire from established fireline and quickly identifying and suppressing spot fires. The priority for the Monument Fire is the active, uncontained fire in the southwest; crews are using indirect and direct fire-suppression tactics to keep the fire north of Hyampom Road.
Today’s hot, dry conditions could cause fire activity to increase.
Knob Fire: The fire was moderately active overnight due to low humidity. Last night, crews continued to patrol and mop up along all containment lines. On the northwest side, winds blew embers across FS Road 6N13, starting a spot. Night-shift crews responded and kept the fire at approximately 0.10 acres. Today, the day-shift crews will continue to monitor it and extinguish any lingering heat. Firefighters will also continue to strengthen containment lines on all sides.
Monument Fire North Zone: Night-shift crews in the southwest near Pattison Ridge conducted strategic firing operations to reduce fuels between containment lines and the fire. Crews also successfully extinguished a spot fire north of Hyampom Road. Fire behavior was minimal on all other areas of the perimeter.
On the southwest side, the fire continues to back downslope toward Hyampom Road. Today’s expected change in wind direction could push the fire southward and downslope at faster rate. Crews will continue to prepare this area for strategic firing operations at night. Resources will vigilantly patrol containment lines and extinguish any spot fires. Firefighters will also continue to patrol and protect Pattison Ridge and the West Fork of Miners Creek.
On the northwest side—near Corral Bottoms, Burnt Ranch, New River, Denny, Hoboken, and Five Waters—crews will continue to patrol the fireline, mopping up areas of heat 100 feet into the burned area from the fireline. At the North Fork Trinity River, resources will continue to improve the existing fireline along Backbone Ridge to keep the fire from spreading eastward should it get established on the east side of the river. Currently the fire remains west of the North Fork Trinity River. On the east side of the fire near Helena, firefighters will continue to patrol State Route 299.
Monument Fire South Zone (including the communities of Weaverville, Hayfork and Junction City): Visit the CAL FIRE Shasta-Trinity Unit Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/CALFIRESHU.
WEATHER: High pressure over the fire area will bring hotter, drier conditions. This afternoon, winds are expected shift to northwest, and gusts up to 20 miles per hour are possible.
ROAD CLOSURES AND RESTRICTIONS:
Monument Fire: Hyampom Road is open; however, fire activity can change rapidly so be vigilant and ready to move should the evacuation status change.
