Monument Fire and Knob Fire Evening Update 9421

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

MONUMENT FIRE RESOURCES: 2,223 personnel, 41 hand crews, 125 engines, 5 helicopters, 39 dozers, 42 water tenders, 29 masticators

KNOB FIRE RESOURCES: 228 personnel, 7 hand crews, 23 engines, 4 dozers, 2 water tenders.

CURRENT SITUATION: The Monument fire is estimated at 179,135 acres and 35% contained. The Knob Fire is estimated at 2,414 acres (acreage reduced due to better mapping) and 82% contained. The priority is the southwest portion of the Monument Fire north of Hyampom Road.

Monument Fire North Zone: Smoke was an issue again today which meant that there was very little air operations across the fire. Crews continued with their holding work in New River and preparation work around Denny and Hoboken. At the North Fork Trinity River, a hand crew continued to construct handline southwards along Backbone Ridge to support operations in the area. There is no fire activity on the east side of the North Fork Trinity River. There were no fire issues around Junction City and crews continued their patrols there.

Today, on the southwest perimeter resources scouted the Hayfork Divide to Bear Creek Trail looking for opportunities to improve containment lines.

The fire continues to back downhill in the direction of Hyampom Road where crews have constructed fire lines. If the fire reaches a predetermined trigger point between Bear Creek and Pasture Gulch, crews will conduct strategic firing operations. The fire crossed a check line near West Fork Miners Creek near Pattison Ridge which may trigger firing operations tonight or tomorrow. The goal of firing operations is to reduce the fuels between containment lines towards where the active fire is. The reduction of ground fuels reduces the wildfire’s ability to burn hot. It also reduces the threats from spot fires because embers have less fuel to burn when they land on the ground.

Monument Fire South Zone (including the communities of Weaverville, Hayfork and Junction City): Please visit the CAL FIRE Shasta -Trinity Unit Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/CALFIRESHU

Knob Fire: Today was a successful day for fire resources as it did not grow in size and stayed within it’s current perimeter. Crews extinguished flare ups and continued to mop up hot spots. PG&E was able to inspect power poles on Friday Ridge for any damage to infrastructure. There will be another few days of work to strengthen the containment lines around Bloody Nose Creek and Butterfly Creek.

WEATHER: A high pressure ridge is now over the forecasted area. This has brought hotter temperatures, lower humidity and drier conditions which increases fire behavior.

ROAD CLOSURES AND RESTRICTIONS:

RETURNING HOME FROM AFTER A WILDFIRE

Once a wildfire has burned through or near an area, many dangers can remain. Firefighters and utility workers begin restoring fire damaged areas as soon as they can. It is important to be aware of the hazards and know what to look for once an evacuation order is lifted.

1.           When driving, watch for trees, brush and rocks which may have been weakened or loosened by fire weather and response. Be aware of debris or damage to roadways.

2.           Inspect your home: check for the smell of gas and use a battery-powered flashlight to check for hot embers in rain gutters, on the roof, under overhangs, under decks and crawl spaces, wood and debris piles and attic.

3.           If electricity is off, make sure all appliances are off before turning power back on. If there are any electrical wires on the ground, stay clear and contact your utility company immediately.

4.           Discard any food that has been exposed to heat, smoke or soot.

5.           Use a hose or wet towels to wet down and wipe off ash rather than sweeping or blowing it back into the air, creating unhealthy conditions.

6.           Consider replacing all filters in your home and vehicle.

7.           To rid your home of the smell of smoke, attach filters to box fans, cover with a wet towel doused in fabric softener and allow them to run to filter the air.

CURRENT SITUATION: The Monument fire is estimated at 176,579 acres and 30% contained. The Knob Fire is estimated at 2,246 acres and 52% contained. The highest priorities continue to be the Knob Fire and the southwest portion of the Monument Fire along Hyampom Road.

Monument Fire North Zone: In the southwest portion of the fire, crews continued to improve contingency lines in the Hyampom Road area. On the west portion of the fire from Corral Bottoms to Burnt Ranch containment lines continue to hold.  In the New River area, crews continued mitigation work around structures up to Denny.  In the northeast near the Twin Sisters area, infra-red data shows there is active fire but due to the smoke inversion it is difficult to see from the ground. The fire continues to hold on the west side of North Fork Trinity River.

Monument Fire South Zone (including the communities of Weaverville, Hayfork and Junction City): Please visit the CAL FIRE Shasta -Trinity Unit Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/CALFIRESHU

Knob Fire: Across the fire area, firefighters made good progress today constructing containment lines along State Route 299 down to the South Fork Trinity River and up to FS Road 6N13. Crews constructed a mile of handline on the western edge of the fire. A secondary dozer line was created off of FS Road 6N13 down to the fire’s perimeter. Today’s only issue was in the area of Panther Ridge, Bloody Nose Creek and Butterfly Creek. At the head of Butterfly Creek, winds increased in the afternoon and blew embers over the ridge into Bloody Nose Creek. Tonight, crews will actively work to get containment of the spot fires.

WEATHER: Very light winds over the area today meant smoke remained heavy. This reduced the air temperate and reduced fire activity, but it limited air operations on the Monument Fire. A warming trend and slight easterly wind over the weekend could cause increased fire activity. At the same time, increased winds will reduce smoke conditions and should allow for more air operations.
