Yesterday, the KNP Complex was quiet thanks to snowfall that covered 60-70% of the fire. Although there is still quite a bit of heat in the fire perimeter, very little to no movement is expected the remainder of the week. Below the Giant Forest on the High Sierra Trail, crews took advantage of wintry weather to make forward progression on containment lines. A road group working along the Generals Highway worked diligently felling hazard trees that could be detrimental to the safety of both firefighters and the public, and chipping brush piles that have been left behind during preparatory work. On Mineral King Road, crews and aircraft worked to contain a small portion of fire that crossed the road during the high wind event Sunday.  

 

An increased emphasis has been placed on suppression repair ahead of the forecasted weather this weekend, which is predicted to bring several inches of rain. Without vegetation to naturally slow water movement produced by the storm, flash flooding and heavy debris flow could be possible, bringing logs, limbs, rocks and sediment down slopes, across roads and into streams and culverts. Active and anticipated suppression repair includes: 

• - Installing waterbars on dozer firelines, which are diagonal depressions dug across the lines that divert surface water that would otherwise flow down the lines off into a  stable drainage way. These are particularly useful on steep slopes that are more susceptible to soil erosion 

• - Removing berms and debris from streams where firelines crossed, and mulching fire line approaches. 

• - Restoring road drainage structures back to pre-fire condition. 

• - Treating/reducing large concentrations of downed trees near roads and structures. 

• - Addressing public safety issues, such as flagging/marking hazard trees threatening roads or structures for removal by professional fallers, and mapping/reporting downed power and phone lines.

Snow fell across most of the fire area Sunday night providing a significant slowdown in fire activity Monday. Over two inches still covered the area Monday evening. Sequoia Kings Canyon National Parks assisted with plowing and road clearing, enabling crews to access areas on the Generals Highway safely. Fire management officials are also working with the park to remove hazard trees that are preventing safe access to areas needing mitigation and/or patrol. The west side of the fire, not blanketed by snow and considered fully contained, saw progress with suppression repair on contingency lines and through chipping activities in and around the Hartland community. A hotshot crew was able to enter the area below the Giant Forest and initiate contingency line construction even through the snow.  

 

Today, firefighters will focus much of their attention on keeping fire down-canyon from Atwell Grove (north of Mineral King Road), and south of the Kaweah River and west of Mineral Springs. Between Montecito Lodge and Stony Creek, crews will continue to patrol and assess opportunities for fireline construction. Natural rightsizing of team and resources occurs as objectives are met, modified, and as fire containment increases. Resources are placed in areas where they are needed the most on any incident, including the KNP Complex. The communities our incident management teams have been able to serve over the course of the last six weeks can rest assured that, if conditions warrant on the KNP Complex, resources will be ordered back to meet the needs of the incident. 

 

On Wednesday, October 20, at 1800, California Incident Management Team 12 will assume command of the KNP Complex.

Ayer se observó un incremento moderado en el comportamiento del fuego, cuando un frente frío llegó al área del incendio. El flanco occidental del incendio se mantiene firme en estado de neutralización y patrullaje, y avanza la reparación de la extinción. En el lado este, los materiales combustibles pesados que ardían cerca de Dorst Creek Cabin fueron extinguidos con ayuda de aeronaves, y se contuvo con éxito el fuego. Debajo de Giant Forest, una propagación por el flanco a lo largo del borde creó algunos puntos calientes entre la parte superior del borde y High Sierra Trail. Es espera que el fuego descienda hacia el sendero, donde recibirá atención de neutralización adicional. Yesterday, a moderate increase in fire behavior was observed as a cold front progressed into the fire area. The western flank of the fire is holding well in mop-up and patrol status, and suppression repair is progressing. On the east side, heavy burning fuels by the Dorst Creek Cabin were suppressed by some assistance from aircraft and the fire was successfully held back. Below the Giant Forest, a flanking run along the rim created some hot spots between the top of the rim and the High Sierra Trail. The fire is expected to back down to the trail where it will receive additional mop-up attention. At Redwood Meadows Patrol Cabin, structure protection measures were taken and will be reassessed today. As anticipated, the fire progressed toward Mineral King Road, and a firefighter assisted in successfully escorting several residents out of the valley who had prior authorization to enter. Moisture arrived after midnight and brought higher humidity, which will remain most of the week.  

 

Today, no forward movement of the fire is expected. The Sequoia Protection Group has been assigned to ensure grove safety and to monitor fire activity in and around those areas. Coordination is taking place daily with local resource advisors to prioritize actions that will support limiting mortality to the species. Patrol, mop-up and suppression repair are the primary activities on the western edge. Lack of manmade features and natural barriers on the southern and eastern edges of the fire has made implementation of control lines difficult, but crews anticipate successful line completion soon. Snags and steep, inaccessible terrain remain a threat to the safety of firefighters. Fuels east of the Generals Highway are sparser than in other areas, which will help moderate forward progression.

Hacia el final de esta mañana ingresarán temperaturas más frescas, impulsadas por vientos fuertes desde el suroeste. Antes del frente frío se espera un aumento en la actividad del fuego con posible ignición de árboles, tanto individuales como en grupos. Los combustibles superficiales por debajo de Giant Forest son escasos, por lo que no se espera actividad extrema del fuego dentro de Grove. Al este de Grove, una cuadrilla volará para proteger la cabaña de patrulla de Redwood Meadow con anticipación al aumento de la actividad del fuego y su posible propagación. A lo largo del resto del incendio, las actividades de extinción de fuegos residuales ya están en curso, y se están fortaleciendo y mejorando los cortafuegos donde es necesario. Cooler temperatures will move in late this morning, pushed by strong winds out of the southwest. Ahead of the cold front, an increase in fire activity is expected, with single or group tree torching possible. Surface fuels below the Giant Forest are sparse, so no extreme fire activity within the Grove is expected. East of the Grove, a crew will be flying in to wrap the Redwood Meadow Patrol Cabin ahead of the increased fire activity and potential spread. Across the rest of the fire, mop up activities are well underway, and fireline strengthening and improvements are being made where necessary. Fallers (logging workers) and a feller buncher (a large piece of mechanized equipment capable of moving multiple logs at a time) are working along Redwood Mountain Road to mitigate hazards from heat-damaged trees and limbs.  

 

Fire suppression repair groups have initiated work on non-primary containment lines, which are lines not currently being utilized to hold the fire back. The construction of water bars will ensure proper drainage and improve water quality, and dozer line rehabilitation and chipping activities have commenced. More equipment is expected to arrive daily, including additional chippers and excavators. Future suppression repair work will include road and fireline grading to minimize impacts to vehicles, and pulling in berms and woody debris developed in the construction of firelines. In areas where dozer lines were driven on by emergency response vehicles, resource advisors will determine whether the areas need to be tilled to reduce soil compaction. Blocking and/or camouflaging firelines from intersections or from public view discourages future motorized use since those areas can sometimes be mistaken for legal, off-highway vehicle trails or roads and are unsafe for travel. Signs, gates and barriers are often damaged by fire activities, creating public safety concerns. In the KNP Complex area, these items will be inventoried before decisions about repair/replacement can be made.

La actividad del fuego será moderada el día de hoy, con solo propagación superficial de baja intensidad y a contraviento en la mayoría de las áreas. Los pronosticadores de las condiciones meteorológicas favorables para el fuego están muy atentos a un sistema de baja presión que se asentará sobre la región geográfica el domingo, trayendo nubes, temperaturas más frescas y vientos del sudoeste. Hoy, las cuadrillas y la división de extinción de estructuras centrarán la mayoría de sus esfuerzos en el patrullaje, la exploración, la neutralización y la reparación de la extinción. Las líneas de contención en el oeste y el norte están resistiendo bien. Debajo de Giant Forest, el fuego se propaga superficialmente hacia el este, hacia la vegetación de robles y matorrales, pero, no obstante, se prevé poco crecimiento. Fire activity will be moderate today with only creeping and backing activity in most areas. Fire weather forecasters are paying close attention to a low-pressure system which will be settling over the geographical area Sunday bringing clouds, cooler temperatures and southwest winds. Today, crews and the structure suppression division will focus heavily on patrolling, scouting, mop up, and suppression repair. Western and northern containment lines are holding well. Below the Giant Forest, the fire is creeping eastward into oak and brush vegetation, but there is still little growth anticipated. The fire has now backed into the Middle Fork of the Kaweah River and has stalled with no expectation of extension across the river.

 

A suppression repair group is working with host agencies to identify and prioritize the needed work, resources and equipment required to best accomplish repair and rehabilitation. Wildfires cause complex problems from water quality, loss of vegetation and soil stability, and loss of habitat and cultural resources. Identifying post-wildfire threats to human life and safety, property and critical natural and cultural resources is a top priority for public land managers.

 

Yesterday, the Kings Canyon National Park announced that it will partially reopen Monday, October 18. Because of impacts to water systems in the park, there will be no running water until systems are restored. For more information on services and closures, please visit www.nps.gov/SEKI. The Sequoia National Park and all developed areas of the Sequoia National Forest remain closed.

 

Weather: Weather conditions will remain warm and dry through the end of the week. No appreciable changes other than a few clouds are anticipated through the end of the week.

Kings Canyon National Park to Partially Reopen Monday, 10/18/21

Sequoia National Park Remains Closed Until Further Notice

SEQUOIA AND KINGS CANYON NATIONAL PARKS, Calif. October 15, 2021 – Following successful fire suppression operations and a period of favorable weather, the majority of Kings Canyon National Park and some wilderness areas of Sequoia National Park will reopen for public use on Monday, October 18. All developed areas of Sequoia National Park remain closed.

The following areas and services within Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are reopening to the public:

•            Big Stump Entrance Station on Highway 180

•            The majority of Grant Grove, including the General Grant Tree

•            Kings Canyon Visitor Center Information Desk (exhibits, shop, and theater remain closed)

•            Cedar Grove

•            Kings Canyon Wilderness except for Redwood Canyon

•            Areas east of the Great Western Divide in the Sequoia National Park Wilderness

•            South Fork in the Sequoia National Park Wilderness

The following areas and services within Kings Canyon National Park will remain closed:

•            All areas south of the intersection between Highway 180 and the Generals Highway, including Redwood Canyon

•            All Grant Grove concessions including restaurant, market, lodging, and gift shop

•            All NPS campgrounds in Cedar Grove and Grant Grove

•            Park Ridge Trail

•            Big Stump Picnic Area

There have been impacts on the water systems in Kings Canyon National Park. There will be no running water available in the park until water systems are restored—currently estimated for late October. Visitors must bring enough water with them to meet their needs during their visit. Furthermore, all restroom facilities with plumbing will also be closed until water utilities are restored. Portable restrooms will be provided where no vault toilets are available.

Kings Canyon National Park is reopening for day use and wilderness use only at this time. No front country camping is available. All camping in Cedar Grove is closed for the winter. The parks hope to make winter camping available in Azalea Campground of Grant Grove in the coming months and will release more information as it becomes available.

Wilderness permits are free by self-issue at this time of year. Bear in mind that trails in the Lodgepole, Middle Fork, and Mineral King areas of Sequoia National Park remain closed. Wilderness travelers will not be able to exit via these trailheads. Please plan accordingly.

 At this time, there is no timeframe in place for reopening developed areas of Sequoia National Park. Until the area is stable enough to assess safely, not enough is known to provide even an estimate. As park staff gain access and assess, a staged reopening is likely, based on different areas having sustained different levels of damage.

“We are acutely aware that local communities rely on national park visitors to support their economies and countless livelihoods. When the parks are closed, this leaves many without or with a drastically reduced source of income,” says Superintendent Clay Jordan. “Not only is providing access to public land an essential part of the NPS mission, we are also members of our local communities, and personally invested in their wellbeing. We are extremely motivated to mitigate this crisis and reopen the parks as soon as it is possible to do so responsibly.”

Wildfires can make the landscape more susceptible to landslides, rock fall, and slope run-off, especially during precipitation events. Slope stabilization and hazard tree mitigation along the Generals Highway are of particular concern. Some losses of NPS infrastructure may require a longer timeline for stabilization and repair to support safe, sanitary public access. As the containment percentage on the KNP Complex continues to climb, the parks are formulating a plan for recovery. A special Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team will be arriving next week to work with park staff in conducting a damage assessment of natural and cultural resources and park infrastructure affected by the fire.

By mid-November, park leadership expects to have a better understanding of what actions will be required before closed sections of the parks can be reopened and hopes to establish projected timeframes for reopening. No major reopening in Sequoia National Park is expected before December 2021, and fire impacts, combined with winter weather effects, may delay reopening well beyond that time.
