White River and Irving Peak Fires Update

Plain, WA – Lightning started the White River and Irving Peak Fires on August 11. The fires are burning on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, northwest of Plain, WA.

Suppression Strategy – Fire managers continue to implement a long-term strategy to manage these fires, including the use of primary and contingency perimeter lines for containment. Tactics include completion and reinforcement of fire lines using roads and constructed hand line.

Current Situation – A local Type 3 Incident Management Team assumed command of the fires on September 7th at 7:00 am. Smoke may be visible over the next several weeks as interior fuels continue to smolder and burn out. Fire updates will continue every other day; if a change in fire activity occurs, the frequency may change.
Last night’s overnight infrared flight could not fly; acreage does not reflect yesterday’s growth.

White River Fire – Acres: 1,576 (from 9/7/2022); 1% contained; Location: Sears Creek area of the White River drainage, approximately 14 miles NW of Plain, WA.
Yesterday, with Red Flag conditions and gusty winds, fire activity increased. Fire growth occurred on the southwest and southeast flanks. Two engines staffed a night shift last night to patrol and monitor activity. The fire footprint remains within the control lines and geographic features being utilized as containment lines. Firefighters continue to establish an anchor point, monitor activity, and maintain structure protection along Sears Creek Road and Windmill Lane.

Irving Peak Fire – Acres: 3,062 (from 9/7/2022); 7% contained; Location: Approximately 16 miles NW of Plain, WA
The Irving Peak Fire saw little growth over the last two days. Firefighters continue work along roads and containment lines and monitor fire behavior and spread utilizing ground and aerial resources.

Weather – A Fire Weather Watch is possible tomorrow, Friday, September 9th, due to a wind shift bringing easterly winds and gusts up to 25mph. Over the next few days, temperatures will remain in the 70s and low 80s.

The incoming team will shadow today with a plan to take command of the fire tomorrow at 7 a.m. Firefighters will actively manage both fires over the coming weeks with a long-term strategy in place. Smoke may be visible over the next several weeks as remaining interior fuels continue to smolder and burn out. With moderating fire behavior, fire updates have transitioned to every other day meaning there will be no update tomorrow. Daily updates may resume if a change in fire activity occurs. 

White River Fire - Acres: 1,522; 1% contained 

Location: Sears Creek area of the White River drainage, approximately 14 miles NW of Plain, WA. 

A cold front will be exiting the area today and bringing slightly warmer temperatures and breezy winds out of the northwest. These conditions could cause interior burning and smoke throughout the fire. The southeastern corner has been the most active and has backed down and stopped at containment lines. Firefighters will finish backhauling excess equipment and continuing to monitor spread. 

Irving Peak Fire - Acres: 3,018; 7% contained 

Location: Approximately 16 miles NW of Plain, WA 

The Irving Peak Fire saw little growth over the last two days. The fire has been most active on the eastern edge in the Ninemile Creek drainage with crews reporting mostly creeping, smoldering and backing. Today, firefighters will be snagging along roads and containment lines and will continue to monitor fire behavior and spread utilizing ground and aerial resources. 

Weather and Fire Behavior – The National Weather Service has issued a fire weather watch for Wednesday, September 7th, 2022, for poor relative humidity and gusty winds. 

A high-pressure system will move back into the region bringing higher temperatures and lower relative humidity. Winds will subside today but will pick up Wednesday morning. Temperatures over the next couple days could reach the mid-80’s and relative humidity could drop into the high teens. 

Air quality and smoke outlook – Smoke from multiple wildfires in northern California and Oregon are moving north into the area adding to the smoke generated from local fires. Smoke levels in the Lake Wenatchee area have a likely to increase throughout the day. Suppression Strategy – Fire managers are continuing to implement our long-term strategy including the use of primary and contingency perimeter lines for containment. Tactics include completion and reinforcement of fire lines (roads and hand line). 

Operations – A more seasonal, cooler weather pattern moves over the fire area tomorrow moderating fire behavior. Smoke may continue to be visible over the next several weeks as remaining interior fuels continue to smolder and burn out. Firefighters will continue to actively manage both fires over the coming weeks with a long-term strategy in place. Due to moderating fire behavior, fire updates will transition to every other day meaning there will be no update tomorrow. Daily updates may resume if a change in fire activity occurs. 

White River Fire - Acres: 1,348; 1% contained 

Location: Sears Creek area of the White River drainage, approximately 14 miles NW of Plain, WA. 

A cold front moved into the area yesterday and brought gusty winds out of the northwest. The increased winds caused some interior burning and smoke throughout the fire. The fire was most active in the southeast corner; however, the fire experienced minimal growth. Today, firefighters will continue to monitor the southern portion of the fire while remaining ready for initial attack on any new fire starts.  

Irving Peak Fire - Acres: 2,937; 7% contained 

Location: Approximately 16 miles NW of Plain, WA 

The Irving Peak Fire saw limited growth primarily on the northwest corner influenced by breezy conditions. The fire experienced low-to-moderate fire behavior with backing, flanking and short-range spotting. Containment lines on the southern flank continue to hold. On the eastern edge, the fire crossed Ninemile Creek, but is currently holding in place. Today, firefighters will improve containment lines while monitoring the fire as it backs down towards containment lines. Firefighters will also remain ready to assist with any new initial attacks. 

Weather and Fire Behavior – Winds will be breezy again today as another dry cold front approaches the region. Westerly wind with gusts of 20 to 30 mph is expected, with the highest gusts across the ridgetops. Afternoon relative humidity will be slightly lower than yesterday, but will remain above critical levels.  

Air quality and smoke outlook – Smoke from multiple wildfires in northern California and Oregon continues to move north into the area in addition to smoke generated from local fires. Smoke levels in the Lake Wenatchee area have a high probability to increase throughout the day. Closures – Several road and area closures are in place for the safety of firefighters and the public. Fire managers are asking people to please respect these closures while recreating in the area. An emergency closure, issued by the Forest Service, remains in place for the Little Wenatchee Road (Forest Service Road [FSR] 65) to include the section between the National Forest boundary and the junction of FSR 65 and FSR 6700.

However, the Little Wenatchee Ford and White River Trailheads are closed and cannot be used to access the PCT. The Buck Creek-Spider Meadow Loop is open and accessible, but smoke and nearby fire activity may impact the area.  

Safety message – The public is asked to please watch out for firefighters and firefighting vehicle traffic in the area.

 White River and Irving Peak Fires Update 

September 3, 2022 - 9:00 AM 

Plain, WA – Lightning started the White River and Irving Peak Fires on August 11. The fires are burning on the Okanagan-Wenatchee National Forest, northwest of Plain, WA.  

Suppression Strategy – Fire managers are refining a long-term strategy including the use of primary and contingency perimeter lines for containment. Tactics include completion and reinforcement of fire lines (roads and hand line). 

Operations – A cold front will be moving into the area with slightly higher humidity, lower temperatures and very strong winds, gusts possibly up to 35 mph. Wind alignment with the topographical features near the fires could test the work on control lines completed to date. No structures have been lost due to these fires.  The increased local fire activity and smoke from Oregon fires pushing northward will bring additional smoke into the area. Smoke columns could be visible to the public as large amounts of fuels are consumed. 

White River Fire - Acres: 1,249; 1% contained 

Location: Sears Creek area of the White River drainage, approximately 14 miles NW of Plain, WA. 

Yesterday, the White River Fire remained active along the southwest edge and the fire burned over the top of Wenatchee Ridge. Roll out of burning material is anticipated resulting in uphill runs.  The fire was also active on the southeast edge. Helicopter water drops were utilized to cool some hotter fire areas. Temperatures did not reach predicted highs due to a slight smoke layer. Today, firefighters will continue monitoring the southern portion of the fire for increased fire activity and fire movement due to the predicted winds. Firefighting resources remain ready for initial attack on any new fire starts and back haul unused equipment. 

Irving Peak Fire - Acres: 2,829; 7% contained 

Location: Approximately 16 miles NW of Plain, WA 

The Irving Peak Fire moved southeast into a rock band.  The concern is winds could increase the spotting distance and blow embers across the band.  The completed burnout operations on a portion of the southeast perimeter along Forest Service Road (FSR) 6504 to FSR 200 held, increasing the total containment of Irving Peak to seven percent. Masticating and chipping along spur road 200 to the 311 continues. Today, firefighters will continue to improve control lines, clear debris and keep a watchful eye on any developing smoke from fire activity.   

Weather and Fire Behavior – A dry cold front moved across the region and will create cooler and windy conditions with higher afternoon relative humidity today. This is a watch-out for fire behavior to produce very active and erratic fire activity.  Today’s forecast calls for temperatures of 77-83 degrees in the valley and 63-68 degrees on the ridgetops; relative humidity of 35-45% in the valleys and 45-50% on the ridgetops; winds in the valleys will be NW 5-10 mph with gust to 20 mph throughout the day and ridgetops W/NW 10-20 mph with gusts to 35 mph.
