Fire: The White River and Irving Peak wildfires now total 2,522 acres. Firefighters are using a combination of natural features and constructed fire line to actively contain these wildfires. Strong winds, generally from the West, will affect the fire area Friday. The weekend will be much cooler and marine air is bringing higher humidity.

Highlights: Lightning started the White River and Irving Peak Fires on August 11. They are burning on the Okanagan-Wenatchee National Forest, approximately 15 miles northwest of Plain, WA. Both fires are under an “indirect” suppression strategy. Brush and small trees are being cleared and chipped along the White River and Little Wenatchee Roads, to prepare these roads for use as containment lines if the fires reach them.

Operations: Yesterday, mop up continued on a small lightning-caused fire north of the White River Road caused by Monday’s lightning. Chipping operations along White River Road near Sears Creek Road were completed. Chipping was completed along the lower five-mile stretch of the Little Wenatchee Road. Work now will move northwest up the Little Wenatchee Road. Dozer fire line and chipping are moving from Peavine Creek eastward to strengthen containment south of the Irving Peak Fire.

Today, firefighters will monitor the lightning strike fire. Firefighters will work with dozers and masticators to open and improve the 200 spur and 6504 roads. Three 20-person Hotshot crews and eight engines will work along roads on the north and south sides of the fires in readiness for a windy afternoon, that will likely increase fire behavior and smoke impacts.

Fire behavior will moderate following the frontal passage, with lowered wind speed, very moist air and continued cooler weather for the weekend.

Highlights: Lightning started the White River and Irving Peak Fires on August 11. They are burning on the Okanagan-Wenatchee National Forest, approximately 15 miles northwest of Plain, WA. Because of the inaccessible and extremely steep terrain, fire officials are managing both fires with an indirect strategy. Crews are cutting and chipping brush and small trees along existing roads to be used as fire line if needed, and constructing some hand line and dozer line away from the fire’s edge.

Operations: Crews yesterday finished work along the White River Road and chipping at Sears Creek and Windmill Lane. Structure assessments and preparations are complete and hose lays and tanks are in place for residences in the White River area. Firefighters will focus today on road preparation along FS Road 6500 and the road system near Irving Peak using dozers and a masticator. Helicopters will support firefighting efforts this morning. Firefighters responded to three new lightning fires from Monday’s isolated thunder storms. One small fire was detected east of White River Road approximately six miles north of the junction. A Hotshot Crew, three engines, and a helicopter dropping water on the fire provided initial attack. The fire is now completely lined and mop up will begin today. Crews also assisted with initial attack on two small fires near Cady Ridge, providing air support at the request of the local Forest.

Weather and fire behavior: Thunderstorms moved through the area yesterday with some pockets of lightning that may have caused additional fire starts in the area. Firefighters will patrol to check for new starts. The forecast for today is dry, hot weather which could enable fire growth on the White River and Irving Peak fires. The longer-term forecast calls for stronger and more sustained winds that could contribute to active fire growth.

The White River and Irving Peak Fires are burning close to each other on steep slopes a few miles west of Lake Wenatchee. They have burned 2,267 acres. Firefighters are chipping and brushing, as well as using heavy equipment, to improve existing roads into fire lines. Slightly increased winds are forecast for portions of the fire, and there are pockets where active fire behavior is expected today.

Smoke: 
Winds are still gentle enough to keep most of the smoke in the vicinity of the fire and Lake Wenatchee in the morning. As seen in recent days, some smoke will move down the Wenatchee River drainage. Expect overall GOOD conditions from Leavenworth to Wenatchee, with some smoke noticeable in late morning and afternoon. Winds from the W and SW in late afternoon will move the smoke eastward. It is expected that the Columbia Basin beyond Wenatchee will see GOOD conditions, but haze may be visible there.
 
Health and Safety: 
Even moderate air quality can affect some people. Plan outdoor activities and recreation ahead of time. Try to reduce long exposures when in smoky areas. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is an air pollutant that is a concern for people's health.

Suppression Strategy: Firefighters are using indirect attack methods, because the very steep and inaccessible terrain makes direct attack dangerous and ineffective. Crews are continuing chipping and brushing operations on existing roads to be used as fire lines if needed. Firefighters continue to look for opportunities to build direct fire line. In this region, large fire growth is created by hot, dry and windy weather. There is more than a month of fire season remaining for the region. If fire behavior and fire weather align, there is still potential for active fire growth in this area. It will take an extended period of wet weather to fully contain these fires.

Operations: Crews have been making excellent progress on road preparations. Chipping is completed along the Sears Creek Road. Windmill Lane southeast of the White River Fire are expected to complete chipping operations today. The dozer line is completed to the hand line on the southern flank of the Irving Peak Fire. Crews will continue to use masticators on Forest Road 6504 to grind up brush and trees into smaller pieces along that road.

Weather: Yesterday’s weather produced some measurable rainfall on the western portion of the Irving Peak Fire, while portions of the White River Fire did not receive any rainfall. Increasing temperatures in the afternoon are expected to increase the likelihood for isolated thunderstorms today.

Fire Behavior: Even though rain fell on some parts of the fires yesterday, there are still pockets where active fire behavior is expected today, with potential for flare ups with group torching and short range spotting.

Additionally, it is recommended to avoid recreating in the Little Wenatchee and White River Road (FS Roads 6500 and 6400) areas.

Evacuations: Evacuation levels remain unchanged. Chelan County Sheriff's office has issued a Level 3 evacuation (Go Now) for Sears Creek Road, White River Road is at a Level 2 (Be Prepared), and Little Wenatchee Road is at a Level 1 (Stay Alert).

Pacific Crest Trail: Smoke is visible from the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). While there is currently no impact to the PCT, hikers should be aware that Little Wenatchee Ford and White River Trailheads are closed and cannot be used to access the PCT.

Safety Message: There is still activity with fire crews and equipment in and around the fire perimeter. Please avoid areas where crews are working and operating equipment. Helicopters are still in the area and may be dipping from Lake Wenatchee. Please stay close to shore when aircraft are on the lake. Please continue to do all you can to prevent wildfires.
