Publication Type: News
The Nevada Type 3 Incident Management Team 2 has taken command of the Four Corners Fire. With the change in command came cooler weather and higher humidity as light rain fell across the fire perimeter. However, the rain did not penetrate the tree canopies and was concentrated mostly in the southeast corner near the Incident Command Post. Cooler temps and more rain will prevail as we continue into the week. This moisture may bring a wetting rain in higher altitudes that will keep fire activity in check.
Meanwhile, suppression repair progress continues on all flanks of the fire. These repair efforts are a critical rehabilitation process that reduces potential soil erosion and repairs damage to infrastructure. On the southeastern edge, crews focused on patrolling the Willow Creek drainage and took opportunities to reinforce containment lines. On the northwest corner, crews patrolled and mopped-up the along the fire line.
On the very southern perimeter, dozer operator crews continue to repair the contingency line constructed in the Hurdy Creek drainage.
Today crews will continue to focus on patrols and containment line repair where needed. Aircraft support is always present and will be called in from McCall when needed.
Smoke will continue to be visible within the fire perimeter. Do not call 911. Instead, report fire activity or smoke within the fire perimeter by calling 208-510-8412. Firefighters will continue to monitor the fire area by air and ground and will respond to any fire activity as necessary.
Weather: For Wednesday, we will see a few shower and thunderstorm activities during the day, with a much higher chance on Thursday. The chance of seeing over 0.10" increases Thursday as well. Temperatures will remain cool with high in the 60s to low 70s. Cooler temperatures will remain through the weekend, along with higher humidity.

Beginning at 6 a.m. tomorrow, Nevada Type 3 Incident Management Team 2 will take command of the Four Corners Fire. Great Basin IMT 2 extends its sincere appreciation to the community and cooperating agencies for their support and assistance over the past two weeks. It has been a pleasure to serve you.
On the eastern edge of the fire perimeter, crews spent their shifts yesterday backhauling the last pieces of equipment off the line, making sure every piece of equipment that was taken out into the field is accounted for. Heavy equipment has been working to repair any dozer lines constructed during suppression of the fire. On the southwestern edge of the fire, crews finished backhauling and repairing firelines yesterday and will be focused on patrolling the area today. To the southeast, in the Willow Creek drainage, air attack made incident command aware of some smoke they spotted during their morning flight yesterday. The fire did not threaten containment and ground crews were sent into the area to address it. Along the contained portions of the southern edge, crews were engaged in mop up and backhauling activities. That work will continue through today. Suppression repair efforts will also continue along the southern edge of the fire perimeter, as well as on the contingency line constructed in the Hurdy Creek drainage.
Expect smoke to remain visible on the mountain within the perimeter for the foreseeable future. Do not call 911. Report fire activity or smoke within the fire perimeter call 208-510-8412. Firefighters will continue to monitor the fire area by air and ground and will respond to any fire activity as necessary.
Weather: Today is expected to be cooler, with highs in the 60’s and considerable cloud cover. Humidity is expected to be between 30 and 40 percent. There is a chance for showers and/or thunderstorms, along with a small possibility of gusty outflow winds associated with them.

The Forest Closure remains in effect for portions of the Boise and Payette National Forests. The closure prohibits going into or being upon the closed area, trails, and roads. Forecasted favorable weather conditions including cooler temperatures and precipitation may provide ample relief to reopen the area outside of the fire perimeter soon.
A mosaic of unburned areas well within the containment line continue to creep and smolder with fire consuming fine dead fuels on the forest floor, with rare tree torching. Spotting potential from afternoon winds pose the greatest threat while crews continue to expand mop up activity further widening containment lines. Night operations end tonight and take advantage of cool air and increased relative humidity that reduce heat of large burning fuels like stumps and downed logs. Post-fire repair work is ongoing around the fire perimeter, along contingency lines, and within affected communities. This includes debris removal, repair of dozer line, damaged fences, gates, and other infrastructure to reduce the environmental impacts that crews and equipment made during firefighting operations. Crew and resource numbers will continue to decrease rapidly as the threat of this fire diminishes and other threats in the state and region require their services.
Expect smoke to remain visible on the mountain, inside the perimeter within the foreseeable future. Report fire activity or smoke within the fire perimeter call 208-510-8412. Firefighters will continue to monitor the fire area by air and ground and will respond to any fire activity as necessary.
Weather: Today begins a trend of cooler weather expected to last throughout the week. Clouds will increase in the afternoon bringing a slight chance of light rain lasting into the evening. The chance of rain and thunderstorms increases through midweek bringing higher humidity.

Wednesday’s storms produced colder temperatures and precipitation, which resulted in a better relative humidity recovery, which makes fine fuels less prone to ignite. Throughout yesterday morning the fire behavior was low, mostly creeping and smoldering. As the day progressed humidity returned to the teens which dried fuels, and allowed afternoon winds to stir up flames. The rainfall across the fire was not enough to put the fire out. A fire of this size, in this fuel type requires a significant and persistent winter storm to completely cool the larger fuels like logs and stumps. Even when the fire is 100% contained, there will be interior activity that may show smoke and flames from time to time.
The outflow winds from Wednesday’s storm took down serval large fire-damaged trees, some of which fell into road ways. Crews spent a lot of time removing these trees and will continue throughout today. Willow Creek continues to pose a challenge for firefighters but steady progress is being made. Along the eastern and southwestern edges of the fire area, where they have recently increased containment, firefighters are completing the final stages of mop up. These last steps include gridding and cold trailing. Gridding is a systemic approach to locating small fires by having firefighters walk in parallel lines along the fire’s edge carefully looking for heat. Cold trailing is a mop up technique where firefighters carefully inspect and feel with the hand for heat to detect any fire, digging out every live spot to extinguish them. The mop up process is time consuming but critical to ensure safety and containment.
Weather: Milder temperatures in the 70’s will persist today, humidity in the teens and north winds gusting 6-12 mph during the morning then decreasing to 4-9 mph in the afternoon.
Fire Restrictions: There are currently no fire restrictions in the area, but residents and visitors are encouraged to exercise extreme caution if building campfires. Four Corners Fire Update September 8 2022
Related Incident: Four Corners Fire
Publication Type: News
Thunderstorms yesterday in the Four Corners Fire area produced ridgetop winds up to 50 mph, lightning, and rainfall. While the precipitation was helpful in limiting fire behavior, it did not occur long enough or with enough volume to put the fire out. Crews are patrolling the Four Corners Fire area watching for and suppressing any new starts from lightning or spot fires created by winds. Today will bring cooler temperatures and winds will continue to gust from 20-25 mph this morning but will decrease this afternoon. Continued interior creeping, smoldering, and torching is expected.
Firefighters will continue to make a direct attack in Willow Creek, working from east to west up the drainage in steep and rugged terrain. Helicopters have played a large role in supporting this work. A team of eight helicopters will continue this cooperative effort today as long as weather permits.

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for the Four Corners Fire area on Wednesday from noon to nine p.m. for gusty winds and low humidity; creating an increase in fire danger. A dry, cold front will move through, with ridgetop winds up to 30 mph and outflow winds from dry thunderstorms over 40 mph. Conditions are favorable for a high probability of ignition and rapid fire spread.
The incoming weather may increase fire behavior and will challenge firefighters to hold established containment lines, especially in the upper elevation subalpine fir forest types in areas like Willow Creek. Crews will be watching for and suppressing any spot fires resulting from increased winds. Continued interior creeping, smoldering and torching is expected.
The Four Corners Fire is now 45% contained with the east flank holding, as crews continue work to mop up and strengthen fire lines above West Mountain Road. This includes eliminating ladder fuels by removing the lower limbs and cleaning up the ground at the tree’s base in order to reduce tree torching. Creating and maintaining an environment that is safe for the residents of French Creek and Campbell Creek to return home is of the highest priority.
Firefighters will continue to make a direct attack in Willow Creek, working from east to west up the drainage in steep and rugged terrain. Helicopters have played a large role in supporting this work, dropping 130,000 gallons of water in the last 48 hours. A team of eight helicopters will continue this cooperative effort today as long as weather permits.
Weather: A Red Flag Warning heralds an incoming cold front, with low humidity and gusty winds. Temperatures will drop into the 70’s on Thursday, with slightly higher humidity and winds shifting to the northwest.
Fire Restrictions: There are currently no fire restrictions in the area, but residents and visitors are encouraged to exercise extreme caution if building campfires.
