March 9, 2023 - The San Bernardino National Forest (BDF) San Jacinto Ranger District will be conducting pile-burning operations today weather and environmental conditions allowed. Operations will begin around 9:00am and continue until approximately 5:00pm. There is a plan to burn approximately 10 acres occurring around the Banning Fire Station. Residents and visitors will see flames and smoke visible throughout the day and evening. Firefighters will be monitoring the area until all piles are extinguished.
Prescribed fire plays an important role in forest health and in reducing extreme wildfires and their negative impact. These fires also help reduce heavy fuel loads while simultaneously opening the conifer forest structure and maintaining the health of meadow habitats. Fire is also used to enhance native plant communities and cultural landscapes and improve wildlife habitats. Another goal is to provide defensible space for communities and developed areas within and surrounding the SBNF. With all fire comes smoke, and the U.S. Forest Service work to mitigate smoke impacts from prescribed fires on the communities in the area.

March 8, 2023 - The San Bernardino National Forest (BDF) San Jacinto Ranger District will be conducting a prescribed pile burn from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm weather and environmental conditions allowed. There are two locations where prescribed burning will be occurring:
Cranston fire station is along HWY 74 just east of the community of Mentone for a total of 10 acres.
Kenworthy Fire Station is also along HWY 74, near the community of Garner Valley, for a total of 14 acres.

Monongahela National Forest Plans Prescribed Burn in the Chestnut Ridge Area near Green Bank

ELKINS, W.Va., March 7, 2023 — Monongahela National Forest plans to conduct a prescribed burn on two units in the Chestnut Ridge area southeast of Green Bank this Thursday if weather conditions permit. This 212-acre prescribed burn will benefit the savanna ecosystem on Chestnut Ridge, improve overall forest health and wildlife habitat, and help reduce the threat of catastrophic wildfires.
The burn area will be closed to the public on the day of the burn and may be closed for several days after to ensure public safety. Signs will be posted on nearby roads before and during burning.
Residents and Forest visitors may see and smell smoke for several days. If you encounter smoke on the highway, slow down, turn on your vehicle’s lights and drive appropriately for the conditions.
Prescribed fires are conducted under specific weather conditions and are designed to accomplish pre-determined forest management goals. Monongahela National Forest follows strict guidelines for conducting prescribed burns, and takes into consideration environmental factors such as temperature, humidity and wind. If any environmental conditions are not within limits, the burns will be postponed.

Favorable weather conditions have created an opportunity to begin pile burning today at the Chico Seed Orchard. Ten acres of piles is planned for this forest administrative site.
Smoke may be visible. Please do not be concerned or report. Local fire officials and the air quality management district are aware of the prescribed fire operations.
