The Storage Fire, burning south of Possum Kingdom Lake and 9 miles west of Palo Pinto in Palo Pinto County, started on June 28, 2023. The fire is suspected to be human caused and is under investigation. The fire is burning in brush, grass and mesquite mix, and is showing low to moderate fire behavior now.

Evacuations: There are currently no evacuations in place in for the Storage Fire. Residents are advised to use caution when reentering area as there will be trees and power poles weakened by the fire's passage. Residents may also continue to see smoke and even small flames for the near future as the fire continues to burn within the burned area.

Another outbuilding was found damaged yesterday, so there have been 2 structures damaged and no injuries reported.

Yesterday: Firefighters continued to heavily mop-up the perimeter of the fire with hand tools and water. The final piece of containment line was constructed by hand yesterday, with firefighters using chainsaws, hand tools, and hoses off their engines to connect the two containment lines. With this last piece of containment line constructed, crews focused on identifying any heats along the lines and patrolling around the perimeter.

Today: Engine crews are continuing to mop-up and patrol around the edge of the fire looking for any areas of heat to put out. Resources are finding minimal areas of heat and are hoping to increase containment at the end of the day. Heavy Equipment resources have repaired some of their constructed lines and are now staged for any additional fires that may start. At the end of today more resources will demobilize from the incident and return to their home units to be prepared for new starts.

Weather and Fire Behavior: Weather will be hot and dry today with some moderate winds. There is a low chance for some rain or thunderstorms this afternoon, and if these develop there will be some gusty and erratic outflow winds. Tonight the relative humidity will be pretty high and the weather tomorrow will be similar.

Situación Actual: El comportamiento del fuego fue moderado ayer debido a cielos parcialmente nublados y precipitaciones irregulares de tormentas eléctricas pasajeras. El fuego continuó retrocediendo por el West Fork Devil y los drenajes principales de Devil Creek. Las células de tormenta pasaron sobre el área del incendio, pero se registraron pocas precipitaciones. El comportamiento del fuego debería ser similar hoy; los vientos del oeste-suroeste pueden volverse racheados y erráticos con el desarrollo de tormentas eléctricas, y si los vientos y la topografía se alinean, el comportamiento del fuego podría aumentar.

Situación Actual: El Equipo 2 de Manejo de Incidentes del Complejo de las Montañas Rocosas continuará preparándose para las condiciones climáticas críticas de incendio que se esperan el martes 4 de julio, incluidas las altas temperaturas, la baja humedad y los fuertes vientos. Los esfuerzos de los bomberos incluyen patrullar y buscar puntos calientes dentro del perímetro del incendio que podrían volver a activarse con vientos fuertes. Las cuadrillas manuales y el equipo pesado mejorarán y ampliarán las líneas manuales y topadoras ya existentes. Special Note: A Fire Weather Watch is in effect today for hot, dry conditions and gusty winds. Tomorrow, July 4, there is a RED FLAG WARNING in effect.

Current Situation: Fire behavior was moderate yesterday due to partly cloudy skies and spotty precipitation from passing thunderstorms. The fire continued to back down the West Fork Devil and the main Devil Creek drainages. Storm cells passed over the fire area, but little precipitation was recorded. Fire behavior should be similar today; winds from the west-southwest may become gusty and erratic with thunderstorm development, and if winds and topography align, fire behavior could increase.

Yesterday, aerial resources were able to assist in moderating fire behavior along the northern and eastern edges, slowing the fire’s progress as it backed into Devil Creek drainage. Aircraft achieved a total of 13.5 hours of flight time before thunderstorm outflow winds created unsafe flying conditions. Crews have completed direct fire line along the western edge from Snow Angel Ranch north to the “bowl” at the north edge of the fire. Today, they will secure and hold this line. On the south side, firefighters are working east from Snow Angel Ranch to connect hand line with established dozer line and FS road 681. Roads in the area are prepared to be used as containment line if the fire does cross Devil Creek drainage. Road preparation includes removal of fuels on the fire side of the road, lessening the chance of fire crossing over. Last night, hotshot crews safely camped close to the fire area to increase work efficiency, a tactic that is referred to as “spiking out.” Structure protection measures at Snow Angel Ranch remain in place.

Weather & Smoke Information: A Red Flag Warning has been issued for Tuesday through the rest of the week due to expected high wind and low humidity. Throughout today, hotter and drier conditions are expected, with highs 81-85 degrees and relative humidity 10-14% Thunderstorm development in the afternoon could produce gusty and erratic wind.

Overnight winds last night increased the potential for spot fires on the 2N05 road. This morning, crews took extra precaution and concentrated on the 2N05 road holding fire and patrolling for spot fires. 

Once the concerns for spot fires were eliminated, crews cleaned up unburned pockets of fuel along the eastern edge of the 2NO5 road.

In the afternoon, fire crews began ignitions on the north side of the fire, taking burning operations slow and steady.  Their work will continue into the evening, until the burning window closes. 

The slow pace allows this naturally ignited fire to spread in areas where it can be safely managed in order to restore natural fire return interval, increase forest resiliency and aid in reducing hazardous fuels lessening the probability of catastrophic fire.

Current Situation: The Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team 2 will continue to prepare for critical fire weather conditions expected on Tuesday, July 4, including high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds. Firefighters’ efforts include patrolling and looking for hot spots inside the fire perimeter that could again become active with strong winds. Hand crews and heavy equipment will improve and expand hand and dozer lines already in place. One piece of equipment, a masticator, is similar to a wood chipper; it “chews up” heavy vegetation and trees, widening the fuel break.

The incident management team includes both its own incident meteorologist and a fire behavior analyst who work cooperatively to predict fire activity and growth based on weather, vegetation, topography, historical fire data, and other factors. Their contributions further assist the team with proactive and contingency planning.

Due to the weather forecast, the plan to ignite pockets of unburned dense vegetation in the NE corner of the fire (Division P on the map) was delayed yesterday. The intent of this action was to tie two spot fires into the main fire perimeter near the area where crews have been working with heavy equipment to build a substantial fire line.

Spring Creek Road and High Mesa Road are open to local traffic only. Please avoid these areas if possible and drive with caution with increase in fire personnel on the roadway.

Weather & Smoke Information: The weather is predicted to continue to be warm and dry. Light NW winds on Monday are expected to noticably increase on Tuseday with possible gusts up to 40 mph. Tuesday will likely bring the most critical fire weather conditions this area has seen since Monday, June 26 when the fire grew rapidly. Residents are asked to help reduce any new fire starts during the holiday’s Fire Weather Watch that would pull resources away from the Spring Creek Fire during this weather event.

Closures: Bureau of Land Management Colorado River Valley Field Office and US Forest Service White River National Forest have public land closure orders in place for the safety of public and firefighters.

This morning, July 2, 2023, all voluntary evacuation orders have been rescinded. Residents are welcome to enter the area and their homes. Fire crews will still be in the area patrolling around the fire and residents are advised to use caution on the roadway driving around our responders. 

Trees and power poles may be weakened by the fire and potentially fall in some areas. Use caution when traveling through burned areas, especially when there are utility poles or trees overhead. Additionally, charred ground may become unable to absorb water during major rainstorms and mud slides may present a threat. 

Small flames and smoke may be visible within the burned area for some time after the fire is declared contained or controlled. Use caution in these burned areas and work to reduce your smoke exposure during poor air quality days.

Yesterday, crews held and monitored Friday’s hand ignitions along the Iron Trail #771. Today, crews plan to use hand ignitions off of Iron Trail #771 to increase containment around the southeast corner of the fire perimeter if conditions prove favorable. Light winds are desirable for firing operations, to carry smoke up and away. Daily, crews continue to monitor fire activity and effectiveness of past suppression actions in the Indian Creek area and in areas of concentrated heat.

A public safety road and trail closure is in effect, including all or portions of several roads and trails that provide access to and within the perimeter of the Pass Fire. These closures include Forest Roads 704 and 4208P in their entirety, and portions of Trails 26, 27, 157, 771, and 772. The area closure and associated map can be found at Gila National Forest - Alerts & Notices (usda.gov).

Fire danger is high, and the need for fire restrictions on the Gila National Forest is reassessed daily. If campfires are allowed and weather permits, you must watch your fire at all times, or extinguish it fully when it is not attended. Douse with plenty of water, stir it into the coals, and feel for heat. Extinguished means cold to the touch with your bare hand.

Fire is a normal visitor to the Gila landscape and something with which we all have to cope. Ecosystems here are not only adapted to fire, but dependent on the frequent return of low to moderate intensity fire to maintain healthy forest, watershed, and fuels conditions. Applying a “confine and contain” strategy to the Pass Fire allows fire to play its natural role in fire-adapted forest ecosystems, while protecting private land, infrastructure, and natural resource values at risk.

Weather: Sunny with increasing cloud cover in the afternoon. Highs will be 80 – 86 degrees F in the area of the fire, with east winds of 5 - 10 mph, occasionally gusting to 20 mph shifting to southerly winds in the afternoon. Relative humidity will fall to around 12% during the hottest period of the day. Increased smoke production can be expected today if crews proceed with planned hand ignition operations. Smoke tends to settle into lower valleys during overnight heat inversions. Low elevation smokey conditions may persist during early morning hours, generally lifting with solar heating.

Aviation Restrictions: A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is still in place over the Pass Fire. All non-fire aircraft are restricted. This includes civilian drones. Unauthorized aircraft in the area will ground firefighting aircraft, hindering firefighting efforts. If you fly, we can’t.

Situación Actual: El comportamiento del incendio fue moderado ayer, con la mayor parte del crecimiento en el lado norte-noreste y algo de crecimiento en la esquina suroeste. El fuego se está extendiendo principalmente en el sotobosque de madera, eliminando los combustibles del suelo, y ha habido algunos incendios de árboles aislados. El comportamiento del fuego debería ser similar hoy; sin embargo, los vientos cambiarán esta tarde para venir del oeste-suroeste y pueden volverse racheados y erráticos. Esto podría aumentar la actividad y el crecimiento en las secciones norte y este a medida que el fuego se establezca en la cuenca justo al oeste de Devil Creek y retroceda hacia el drenaje de Devil Creek en el este.
