Dolores District Boggy Draw Units Prescribed Fire Update
Related Incident: 2025 San Juan National Forest Prescribed Fire Program
Publication Type: News
Crews on the Dolores District have completed ignitions on the prescribed fire in the Boggy Draw area, 5 miles NE of Dolores. The boundaries of the burn area remain secure and controlled.
Smoke from the prescribed fire has been carrying east for most of the day, passing over the highway 145/Dolores River corridor and over other locations including La Plata Canyon. Fire activity will diminish this evening. The forecast calls for winds to shift and come from the north tonight. Smoke may be more noticeable in the Dolores-Mancos-Cortez areas overnight, and it may settle into low-lying valleys.
There will be some continued smoke on Wednesday, as the fire consumes ground fuels, stumps and dead and down logs.
The project area involves 1,094 acres located west of Hwy 145 near the intersection of Forest Roads 528 and 405. Crews from the Dolores Ranger District, as well as other local and regional fire agencies are on site, helping to carry out the burn project and keep it within defined boundaries. Prescribed fire is being implemented to reduce hazardous ground fuels, lessen the risk of unplanned large-scale wildfire, help restore ponderosa pine ecosystems, and improve wildlife habitat. Prescribed fire can also help protect mature trees by reducing the ladder fuels that can carry fire into the canopy.

Incendio Anvil

Quarry Fire Daily Update Oct 17
Related Incident: 2023-STF-Quarry Fire
Publication Type: Announcement
Quarry Fire Update
Tuesday, October 17th, 2023
Stanislaus National Forest
Incident Management Team (Type-3)
PIO Contact:
Phyllis Ashmead - phyllis.ashmead@gmail.com
Fire Statistics:
Location: The Quarry Fire is located on the Stanislaus National Forest, Mi-Wok Ranger District, off Forest Road 3N01, east of Bourland Creek and near the Emigrant Wilderness west of Cherry Creek.
Acres Burned to Date: 6,729
Cause: Lightning
Containment: 44%
Total Personnel: 58
Current Activities: Yesterday, crews patrolled and cleaned up pockets of unburned fuels to gain depth east of Rock Creek from what was ignited the past couple of days. Unmanned Aerial System (drone) conducted mapping missions to get an accurate perimeter of the east side of the fire from Hells Mountain to the eastern flank of Cherry Ridge. Crews scouted areas to the north of the burn for potential future treatments.
Background: The Quarry fire was one of 42 fires ignited by lightning strikes across the forest on September 9, 2023. District fire managers immediately worked to ensure these naturally ignited fires stayed within pre-determined boundaries. Fire personnel with the Stanislaus National Forest are currently managing the Quarry Fire to achieve multiple resource objectives.
Closures: Soft closures are in effect to provide for the safety of the public utilizing public lands as well as fire personnel working in the area. The soft closures encourage the public to stay clear of the area, to find alternate routes to their locations and to provide fire personnel the widest berth possible as they go about their mission.
With the public’s cooperation, we will continue to monitor the number and duration of soft closures, recognizing that fire personnel and public safety is the focus.
As of October 14th, 2023, the following soft closures are in effect:
3N17 where it meets 3N29
3N16
Smoke: An Air Resource Advisor has been assigned to the Quarry Fire and will be producing a daily Smoke Outlook.
The amount of smoke in the air is carefully planned for. The team is in close alignment with and get approvals from the Tuolumne County Pollution Control District (link) each day to burn the maximum amount of acreage that will not negatively impact air quality to an unsafe level. Additionally, firefighters monitoring smoke are staged around the vicinity of the fire to adjust tactics to minimize smoke impacts.
If possible, minimize outdoor activity if you are sensitive to smoke. Smoke does tend to settle in low-lying areas in the evenings to the mornings, so camping and recreating in this vicinity is not advised. To check air quality, visit fire.airnow.gov.

Anvil and Flat Fires Update October 17 2023
Related Incident: Anvil FireFlat Fire
Publication Type: News
Anvil Fire
Size: 22,170 acres Start Date: August 25, 2023 Location: 8 miles east of Port Orford, OR
Containment: 80% Total personnel: 283 Resources: 9 crews, 1 helicopter, 2 engines
Heavy rainfall and high winds hampered operations yesterday. Conditions improved slightly in the afternoon allowing heavy equipment to accomplish suppression repair work on the west and north sides of the fire. Excavators also worked to pull back dozer line berms and chipping continued along Forest Service Road 5503. Several roads were too hazardous to travel especially in the China Mountain area as well as the Elk River Road where a rockslide occurred. Heavy equipment that was staged nearby was able to quickly clear the debris from the roadway. Today, an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) will be utilizing infrared technology to check for any lingering heat near the perimeter of the fire. Consistent rain in the extended forecast will aid in extinguishing any remaining smoldering but will continue to impact public and firefighter safety with potential for mudslides, debris flows, and road washout. Fire managers will be assessing roads to evaluate any hazards that pose a threat to the safety of personnel prior to conducting operations.
Evacuations: Level I evacuation zones around the Anvil Fire were removed on October 16 at 3:00 PM. There are currently no evacuation statuses for either fire.
Flat Fire
Size: 34,242 acres Start Date: July 15, 2023 Location: 2 miles southeast of Agness, OR
Containment: 93% Total personnel: 56 Resources: 1 crew, 4 engines
Yesterday, despite close to two inches of rain across both fires slowing the progress of work, heavy equipment was successful in completing additional fire suppression repair. Crews also worked to spread straw along the Pine Grove bicycle trail to prevent damage from soil erosion.
Emergency Fire Area and Road Closures Still in Effect: Forest closures remain in place in both fire areas. There is an update to the Emergency Area and Road Closure for the Flat Fire, reducing the closure area and reopening roads adjacent to the fire area. The new order is effective October 3, 2023 through December 31, 2023 unless rescinded sooner. For current closure information and maps, please visit: https://bit.ly/RRSNFAlerts or https://inciweb.wildfire.gov/incident-closures/orrsf-anvil-fire.
Restrictions: The Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest lifted all Public Use Restrictions on Forest Service
Lands. The Fire Danger Rating and Industrial Fire Precaution Levels were removed from all five Ranger Districts on the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, signaling the end of fire season, effective midnight, October 17. Emergency road and area closures are still in effect in fire areas (see above).
Weather: Temperatures will begin to warm up reaching the low 70s by Wednesday. Conditions will dry out through Friday until another system bringing precipitation moves into the area by Sunday. The extended forecast shows multiple systems stacking up to bring several days of consistent rainfall.
Smoke: Due to rain and lack of smoke, a daily smoke outlook no longer will be provided. Air quality information is available at www.OregonSmoke.org.

Wharf Whale Prescribed Fire 101723
Related Incident:
Publication Type: News
The Eldorado National Forest Pacific Ranger District has planned an understory-prescribed fire operation for up to 250 acres in the vicinity of Jaybird Canyon Road and Peavine Ridge Road. Ignition operations will occur from October 17th through the 19th.
Every understory burning operation follows a specialized burn plan, in which temperature, humidity, wind, vegetation moisture, and smoke dispersal conditions are considered daily before ignitions occur. This operation is a part of the Wharf Whale Fuel Break project, an ongoing fuels treatment project in the Eldorado National Forest. Weather permitting, the operational goal is to conduct ignitions between October 17th and October 19th, with additional days dedicated to mop-up securement and patrolling as needed. There will be no closures in the area during operations.
By removing excess vegetation, prescribed fire reduces the severity of future wildfires which helps protect communities and makes the landscape more resilient. It also makes room for new growth, which provides forage for wildlife, recycles nutrients back into the soil, and helps reduce the spread of insects and diseases in forests.
With all fire comes smoke, and the U.S. Forest Service works to mitigate smoke impacts from prescribed fires on the communities in the area. While smoke may be visible in the area during the prescribed fire operation, individuals with respiratory issues or sensitive conditions should take precautions to avoid exposure to smoke. Smoke from prescribed fire operations is normal and may continue for several days after an ignition depending on the project size, conditions, and weather. Prescribed fire smoke is generally less intense and of much shorter duration than smoke produced by unwanted wildfires. Fire managers consider optimal conditions for dispersal and duration of smoke impacts when planning prescribed burns.
The Eldorado Nation Forest will provide updates and information about the prescribed fire operation to the public as needed.
