Burning begins today! As long as weather conditions remain favorable, Monongahela Fire Managers plan to burn in the Meadow Creek Unit 1 and Unit 2 Prescribed Fire areas beginning today, Tuesday April 16. 

Forsythe II PM Update 04 15 2024

Ignitions are complete for today, Monday, April 15, after successfully treating 22 acres at the Forsythe II prescribed burn. Firefighters will remain in the area as they secure and monitor the perimeter of this burn unit. Smoke may continue to be visible in the Gross Reservoir area overnight.

Due to the forecasted weather for tomorrow, there will be no active ignitions on Tuesday, April 16. We expect to revisit the possibility for continuing work in this area on Wednesday, April 17.

Firefighters have conducted a test fire and determined that conditions are clear to allow ignitions to continue as planned today, Monday April 15, for the Forsythe II Prescribed burn area. Smoke may be visible in the area as well as along the Front Range in areas proximate to Gross Reservoir.

Fire managers work closely with experts to minimize the impacts of smoke. Air quality is carefully monitored before and during a prescribed fire and all prescribed burns comply with state air quality regulations to minimize impacts to communities. Pending conditions,  firefighters on Plains/Thompson Falls Ranger District will continue prescribed fire operations to reduce fuels from previous management operations.

Plains/Thompson Falls Ranger District: 

Firefighters accomplished 50 acres yesterday on the Clear Creek units and will continue prescribed fire operations today.  The 50-acre unit is located 6 miles west of Thompson Falls.  Minimal smoke impacts are anticipated; however, smoke may be visible from may be visible from Thompson Falls.

Pending conditions,  firefighters on the Lolo National Forest  will conduct prescribed fire operations on several districts to help improve and maintain forest health and enhance big game and turkey habitat. 

Ninemile Ranger District: The 21-acres Frenchtown Face unit is in Roman Creek, adjacent to the Frenchtown Folf Course, approximately 1.5 miles north of the Frenchtown High School.  Smoke may be visible from Seeley for the duration of the burn.

Plains/Thompson Falls Ranger District: Firefighters plan to conduct up to 30 acres of understory burning on the Clear Creek units 6 miles west of Thompson Falls.  Minimal smoke impacts are anticipated; however, smoke may be visible from may be visible from Thompson Falls.

Superior Ranger District: Firefighters will conduct up 100 acres of prescribed burning 8 miles east of Superior in the First Creek and North Fork Second Creek drainages. This prescribed burn will utilize aerial ignitions to reduce fuel from previous management operations. Smoke may be visible through the Interstate 90 corridor near Superior.  Smoke should disperse following ignition but may settle along drainages and in lower elevations in the overnight hours. 

Prescribed fire will be implemented in compliance with Montana air quality standards and coordinated with the Montana Department of Environmental Quality and the appropriate county health departments to minimize the impacts of smoke.

Firefighters will implement the prescribed burns, patrol, and monitor the burning over the next few days.


Monongahela NF Plans Prescribed Burns in Greenbrier and Pocahantas Counties 04 12 2024

Monongahela National Forest plans to conduct prescribed burns next week in Greenbrier and Pocahontas Counties, if weather permits. The purposes of these treatments are to re-establish fire’s natural role in the forest ecosystem, improve forest health and wildlife habitat, and reduce the threat of catastrophic wildfires.

Prescribed burns in Greenbrier County, planned for April 16 - April 19, include:  

  • Meadow Creek Units 1 & 2 – 243 acres
  • Rucker Gap – 384 acres

Prescribed burns in Pocahontas County, planned for April 17 - April 19, include: 

  • Guinn Ridge – 1,462 acres (Pocahontas County)
  • Ramshorn Ridge – 1,005 acres (Pocahontas County)

Each burn area will be closed to the public on the day of the burn and may be closed for several days after. Signs will be posted on roads near the burn area before and during operations. Residents and forest visitors may see and smell smoke for several days. If you encounter smoke on the highway, slow down, turn on your vehicle’s lights and drive appropriately for the conditions.

UPDATE: This prescribed fire planned for today has been postponed due to unfavorable weather conditions. The Second Chance unit received rain this morning. 

Superior Ranger District: Yesterday, fire crews accomplished 25 acres of prescribed fire operations on the Second Chance unit, 8 miles east of Superior in the North Fork of Second Creek. Today, firefighters plan to finish up to 4 acres of prescribed burning on this unit, as weather and fuels conditions allow. Smoke may be visible from Superior.

Superior Ranger District: Pending conditions, prescribed fire operations will take place on the Superior Ranger District to help reduce hazardous fuels and improve habitat for big game winter range.

The 25-acre prescribed fire is located approximately 8 miles east of Superior in the North Fork of Second Creek.  Smoke may be visible from Superior and Interstate 90 for the duration of the burn. Firefighters and engines will implement the prescribed burn, patrol, and monitor the burning over the next few days.

All prescribed fires will be implemented in compliance with Montana air quality standards and coordinated with the Montana Department of Environmental Quality and the appropriate county health departments to minimize the impacts of smoke to neighbors, cooperators, and surrounding communities. Smoke may settle in valley bottoms and drainages overnight, but it is expected to dissipate within a few days.

Anvil Fire Closure Rescinded 04 05 2024

Powers, Ore. April 5, 2024--After assessing the Anvil Fire area, the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest/Powers Ranger District has determined that the Anvil Fire closure, which was scheduled to be in effect through July 1, 2024, is now safe and open for public entry.

The Anvil Fire closure included the Grassy Knob Wilderness area; Forest Service Roads 5201 (Sixes River Road) and 5201-90 (Butler Creek Road) and the Grassy Knob Trail #1241

 Please continue to be cautious when driving through the area and maintain situational awareness around any snags in the burned area.
