Final Update Comet Fire August 9 2020

About the Comet Fire: The Comet Fire started on August 4 about 8 miles northwest of Pioche, Nevada on lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Great Basin Team 7 was already in place managing the nearby Bishop Fire and immediately sent its initial attack task force to help local resources slow the fire’s spread. Full support from fixed-wing aircraft dropping fire retardant and helicopters with water drops enabled crews to halt its forward progression. Deadly determination by skilled firefighters over the last few days has resulted in a well-secured perimeter and robust containment line.

Team 7 assumed command from the local unit the morning of August 6, implementing a full containment strategy. Full containment is expected the evening of August 9. The local unit will take the fire back on August 10.

Fire Repair Work: Local resource advisors began suppression repair activities even before the fire was fully contained. Where it was safe to do so, crews began repairing roads and pulling vegetation and other debris onto containment lines, installing water bars, obliterating berms, and other activities. This work will help reduce erosion, restore hydrologic function, prevent noxious weeds establishment, and leave a clean footprint free of waste and refuse.

Mine Hazards: Old mining shafts in and near the fire area present a danger to firefighters and the public. Local resource advisors helped firefighters avoid known shafts, adits, and other hazards associated with mining.

How can I stay informed about the fire? The last daily update was posted on August 8. As necessary, updated fire information will be shared on InciWeb (https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/ 20incident/6919/) and the Eastern Nevada Interagency Fire Facebook page (https://tinyurl.com/EastNVFire). You can also call the BLM Ely District Office at 775-289-1800.

Bishop (last daily update): After hard work the Bishop Fire is now 100% contained. In the northwest part of the fire yesterday crews finished securing and mopping up the last piece of line. Remaining crews will continue to patrol the perimeter and any smokes that pose a threat to the containment of the fire will be put out. For some time, smoke may be visible from the interior of the fire. On fires this size interior smoke is normal as large trees and remaining vegetation continue to smolder. Remaining fire-weakened trees and hot ash pits exist within the fire perimeter, posing a risk to firefighters. Crews will not extinguish interior smokes due to the risk and safety posed by these hazards.  Every member of The Great Basin Incident Management Team 7 would like to extend their thanks and gratitude to the town of Caliente for all their support throughout this incident.

Comet: Day 5 of the Comet Fire saw containment rise to 59%. In yesterday’s high temperatures and low relative humidity, helicopters worked with crews on the ground, providing water bucket drops and logistical support. During yesterday’s shift, firefighters continued mopup and reinforcing line around the fire. In steep and rocky terrain, fire resources will continue working to stop roll out. Trenches will be utilized to help prevent rolling debris and hot embers from escaping the fire’s containment lines. Crews have been instructed to use extreme caution due to the historical mining in the fire area.

Safety: Motorists are asked to drive with caution and be aware of fire traffic entering and exiting roadways around Rainbow Canyon road and the junction of Hwy 93, Great Basin Hwy, and Nevada State Route 320. The public should be aware that a portion of the Silver State Trail and Stampede Road are in the fire area. Please follow all posted signs.

Weather: Temperatures will remain in the mid-80s and low 90s as a low-pressure system moves along the West coast. Winds will continue to be out of the south with gust less than 25 mph. With the combined temperatures and winds relative humidity’s will remain low and the fire danger level will remain high around the Caliente and Pioche area.

Firefighters continue to monitor the fire area and are aware of smoke within the fire perimeter.

Comet: The Comet Fire is now 7% contained. Helicopters worked with crews on the ground, providing water bucket drops and logistical support throughout the day.
