August Complex Update

The August Complex is comprised of 35 fires that were started by lightning across the Mendocino National Forest. The Complex grew to 65,030 acres during the dayshift Wednesday due to hot and dry weather conditions and wind gusts up to 25 mph.  Structures and powerlines are being threatened.  Many of the homes and summer cabins have been evacuated with in the perimeter of the forest.

Evacuation Warning for Grindstone Rancheria. 

Evacuation Order for Chrome, Burrows Gap, and Red Mountain area of western Glenn County.  The area of County Road 306 from County Road 314 north to Burrows Gap and west to the Mendocino National Forest. Immediately evacuate the area.


Immediate Evacuation Order due to fire.  The area of Elk Creek from County Road 309 north to road M 9 and west of County Col to the Mendocino County line is ordered to Evacuate.
 

Immediate Evacuation Order for the area of the Mendocino National Forest in Glenn County along forest Highway 7 due to the fire.  The area is from County Road 309, north to road M 9 from the forest boundary, west to Plaskett Meadows.

A Temporary Evacuation Point is open at Willows Memorial Hall, 525 W. Sycamore St., Willows CA  95988. 
This evacuation site is jointly staffed by Glenn County Health & Human Services Agency and the American Red Cross.

An Animal Shelter is open at the Glenn County Fairgrounds, 221 E Yolo St. Orland, Ca  95963.  The animal shelter is currently staffed by Glenn County Sheriff's Office Animal Control staff and local volunteers.

 WILLOWS, Calif. — Aug. 18, 2020 — The August Complex is comprised of at least 20 fires, ranging in size from one-tenth acre to 1,400 acres, scattered across the Mendocino National Forest. The fires were sparked by lightning Sunday, Aug. 16 and more fires are anticipated to continue to surface. A California Type 2 Incident Management Team has been ordered to manage the Complex and is scheduled to arrive Tuesday, Aug. 18. 

Several of the fires in the August Complex exhibited moderate to rapid rates of spread Monday. The Doe Fire, by Valley View Orchard 35 miles northwest of Willows crossed the M9 Road at Heifer Ridge. The size of the fire has been adjusted to 1,400 acres. About 100 personnel are assigned to the Doe. Fire activity was moderate and some rain fell on the Rockwell Fire 13 miles northwest of Elk Creek. The Rockwell Fire is estimated at 800 acres with engines and smokejumpers assigned. The Pine Kop showed increased activity due to active thunder cells in the area Monday afternoon. Pine Kop is estimated at 800 acres with 0% contained. The fire is located west of Elk Creek and staffed with several engines and a crew. The Box Fire in the Snow Mountain Wilderness had minimal growth and stands at 25 acres. The fire is lined and will be mopped up. Meanwhile, as several other small fires are contained and placed in monitor status, resources are moved around to the next fire with the greatest threat to the public, property and structures. The weather forecast shows thunderstorms exiting the area with high pressure returning and very hot and dry conditions remaining through the week.   Please be advised that forest officials will be implementing a closure for firefighter and public safety on the M9 Road from the forest boundary west to the junction with the M4 Road. Forest visitors should call the office nearest their destination for current information before traveling to the forest.

Lightning Fires Update 8 pm

 WILLOWS, Calif. — Aug. 17, 2020 — The lightning fires that started Sunday, Aug. 16 on the Mendocino National Forest will be managed under one organization and will now be called the August Complex. The Complex is comprised of at least 20 fires, ranging from one-tenth acre to 2,000 acres, with more fires anticipated to surface. A California Type 2 Incident Management Team has been ordered to manage the Complex and is scheduled to arrive Tuesday, Aug. 18. 

Several of the fires in the August Complex spread rapidly and gained ground on Monday. The Doe Fire, by Valley View Orchard 35 miles northwest of Willows, grew to approximately 2,000 acres and became established in Bear Canyon. About 100 personnel are assigned to the Doe. Suppression efforts were hampered by thunder cells and strong winds Monday afternoon on two fires west of Elk Creek: Rockwell and Pine Kop. The Rockwell Fire is estimated at 400 acres and the Pine Kop is estimated at 750 acres. These fires are 0% contained and have crews and engines committed. The Box Fire in the Snow Mountain Wilderness had minimal growth and stands at 25 acres. The Box is staffed by smokejumpers and aircraft.   Meanwhile, several other small fires have been contained and will be monitored and patrolled. Lightning Fires AM Update 11 am

 WILLOWS, Calif. — Aug. 17, 2020 — A combination of hard work and excellent coordination has enabled fire crews to get the upper hand on several lightning-caused fires on the Mendocino National Forest. Thunderstorms moved across the forest Sunday, Aug. 16 sparking at least 13 fires.

Five small fires, less than 2 acres each, are in mop-up or patrol status. These fires are generally located near Asa Bean on the Covelo Ranger District, around Alder Springs and Tatham Ridge. Today, fire crews are focused on the following fires: Doe Fire, 550 acres, near Valley View Orchard 35 miles northwest of Willows. There are 75 personnel assigned. Box Fire, 20 acres, located in the Snow Mountain Wilderness. There are smokejumpers and aircraft assigned. There are two fires west of Elk Creek: Rockwell Fire is 175 acres with 20 personnel assigned and additional resources ordered, and Pine Kop is approximately 80 acres with crews and engines expected to staff this fire Monday. There is a chance for isolated dry lightning Monday with high temperatures and moderate winds. While there are no closures at this time, hunting season has started and hunters are advised to call the office nearest their destination for current information before traveling to the forest.

Lightning Fires Update 6 pm

WILLOWS, Calif. – Aug. 16, 2020 – Lightning sparked multiple new fires on the Mendocino National Forest after early morning thunderstorms moved across the area Sunday, Aug. 16. Fire managers have identified and staffed six fires. Additional resources have been ordered to assist.

The largest fire is the Doe Fire located near Valley View Orchard approximately 35 miles northwest of Willows, Calif. in Glenn County. It is estimated at 100 acres with an engine, two airtankers, one helicopter and air attack assigned.

The other fires are scattered around the Grindstone Ranger District and range in size from ½ acre to 15 acres, except for the Bean Fire on the Covelo Ranger District which is estimated at five acres.

Fox Hollow Fire Final Update

Fox Hollow Fire: 10 acres, 100% contained

The Fox Hollow Fire is 100% contained and has been turned back over to the local fire department to monitor. Decrease in acreage is due to more accurate mapping.  

Fox Hollow Fire August 16 745 PM Update

Fox Hollow Fire: estimated 25 acres, 75% contained.
Location: approximately 7 miles southwest of Junction, Texas

The fire is reported as looking good. Ground crews are working on containing a slop over that occurred earlier this afternoon. The heel of the fire is requiring hand tool work in a creek bed to connect containment lines. Aerial resources were critical in assisting with fire suppression. Crews will continue to construct, patrol, and mop up along containment lines.  

Fox Hollow Fire August 16 415 Update

Fox Hollow Fire: estimated 25 acres, 0% contained.
Location: approximately 7 miles southwest of Junction, Texas

Active fire behavior with crowning and spotting in cedar has been observed. Aerial resources have been requested to assist ground resources with fire suppression. Ground resources are having issues accessing due to the fire's location in a canyon.
 
Fire Weather: Southeast winds of 5-10 mph this afternoon will become light and variable around sunset, with winds becoming topographically controlled. Isolated thunderstorms are possible through early afternoon, with strong, gusty, erratic winds possible near storms. Temperatures are expected to be around 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Relative humidity values are expected to be 30% through early evening, with recoveries around 75% at sunrise.
Weather forecasted for Monday is shower and thunderstorm chances increase from 20% in the morning to 50% in the afternoon. Winds are expected to be northeast at 5-10 mph. High temperatures will be around 98 degrees Fahrenheit. Minimum relative humidity values are forecasted to be around 29%.
