WILLOWS, Calif – Sept. 7, 2020 – The August Complex currently sits at 349,565 acres and 24 percent contained. The Hull, Doe, Tatham, and Glade fires have merged to form one large fire. There are 1,138 resources committed to the Complex.
There are multiple wind direction shifts expected through the day and into early morning Tuesday with strong gusts up to 30-40 mph. Winds are expected to shift from the southwest to the northeast by early Tuesday morning. A Red Flag Warning was issued Sunday afternoon and is in effect from 10 pm Monday to 8 am Wednesday. There is potential for increased fire activity and spread with heavy smoke production.
Fire activity increased Sunday due to high temperatures and gusty winds throughout the Complex. Fire crews are prepared for heightened fire activity over the next couple of days due to extreme forecast weather.
There were successful burnout operations in multiple areas of the Complex. The burnout operations along the M2 Road and in the area around the Mitchell Place on the north end of the Complex are holding in place. Another effective burnout operation from the area around the Mare Cabin down to Brewer Oak Camp progressed steadily ahead of the fire. The spot fire east of Howard Lake has moved into an old burn scar and is holding on the northern side of the lake.
Firefighters worked to contain the spot fire from Saturday on the Hopkins fire (18,514 acres; 10 percent contained). Efforts will continue into Monday to hold the containment line. Access to this area from Highway 36 or Forest Road 30 is not advised.
On the southwest corner of the Complex, firefighters will work on the spot fire in the Mendenhall Creek area Monday. This is a focal area for operations ahead of the upcoming northeast winds.

There are 1,070 resources committed to the Complex including: 22 crews, four camp crews, seven helicopters, 53 engines, 20 dozers, 32 water tenders, and two masticators.
Expect heavy winds Sunday that may persist through Tuesday. Due to high temperatures and gusty winds, the potential for rapid fire spread throughout the Complex continues today through Tuesday. Temperatures could range from the mid-90s on the ridges to 110 degrees in the valleys. Dense smoke in the surrounding areas is expected to remain throughout the morning, with the potential of clearer air midday.A spot fire moved beyond the containment line in the Buck Rock area moving west towards an old burn scar. Crews will continue to contain and mop up the spot.
Firefighters were assisted with air operations dropping water from C-130 tankers and helicopters Saturday on the Hopkins fire (15,466 acres; 10 percent contained). Firefighters continue to use old burn scars and road systems in burnout operations, working along Rainbow Ridge with crews and heavy equipment. Air support will continue Sunday.
Air operations also supported work in the areas around the M1 Road near the northwest corner of the Hull fire. A spot crossed the line during a burnout operation on Saturday. Fire retardant was used to cool down the area and hand crews worked to mop up the spot fire. This work will continue into Sunday’s operations.
The burnout operations near Mendocino Pass to the west side of the Doe fire were successful and stayed within containment lines. Crews are also conducting burnout operations around the Mitchell Place on the north end of the Complex. Crews are performing these operations in anticipation of potential rapid fire spread in the coming days. The burnout operations are aimed at slowing or stopping the fire as it reaches pre-determined areas.

More resources are moving up to the Hopkins Fire (9,402 acres; 0 percent contained) to slow the spread of fire growth on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest and to protect structures and cultural resources in the area.
The Doe fire grew slowly towards natural drainages on the north end of the fire. In the Crane Mills area, an additional crew conducted burn out operations between Mitchell Place and Russell Cabin. Firefighters will continue to improve containment lines as southwest winds begin today.
On the northwest end of the Doe fire, an additional crew is providing support between Buck Rock and Howard Lake where the fire crossed primary containment lines. Government Flat to Anthony Peak is another area of focus today for continued structure protection. On the western perimeter of the fire, southwest winds are expected to push the fire away from the homes and cabins between Plaskett Ridge and FH7.
On the southwest perimeter of the Doe fire where the Hull fire began, additional crews will continue to reinforce containment lines from Bald Mountain south to Monkey Rock where a spot fire occurred Wednesday off the M1 road. Firefighters continue to monitor the southern and eastern perimeters of the fire, where containment lines stretch from Lake Pillsbury to Elk Creek, all the way up to Salt Creek Conservation Camp.
Smoke will result in poor air quality this afternoon as smoke settles into drainages.

Crews are working with CAL FIRE and Crane Mills Timber to tie in fire breaks, utilizing pre-existing shaded fuel breaks between the Glade and Tatham Fire. Burnout operations continue in the southwest area of the Glade fire and crews are making good progress tying the burnout into the main portion of the Doe Fire.
Dozer operations continue in two areas towards the Black Butte River south of Glade fire from M4 to the Black Butte River and from Bald Mountain north of the Hull fire. The western perimeter of the Doe fire is approximately six miles from the Hardy Place and crews are constructing primary containment lines between that area and the fire.
