The Huron Zone will be implementing the Zissler East Prescribed Fire Project today. The goal is to treat 511 acres of Jack Pine, Red Pine and oak near Oscoda Township in Iosco County and Curtis Township in Alcona County. The public may encounter fire personnel in the vicinity of Kings Corner Road and Forest Road 4428. Please be careful around these areas.

The Manistee zone may have an opportunity to complete a 207 acre prescribed fire today in Dover township of Lake County at the intersection of N Hawkins Rd and East 10 mile.

 April 10, 2021 - The Elk Fire is 43 acres, in steep country with heavy dead and down. The fire is 100% contained.    

The firefighters on the incident are continuing to mop up to strengthen containment lines.

Resources currently working on the fire:

  • 2 type-3 engines
  • 1 20-person hand crew
  • 1 water tender
The incident will transitions from a Type 3 organization to a Type 4 organization today.

April 9, 2021 - The Elk Fire is 43 acres, in steep country with heavy dead and down. Containment is 98%.   

The firefighters on the incident are continuing to mop up to strengthen containment lines.

Resources currently working on the fire:

  • 2 falling modules
  • 1 water tender

 April 8, 2021 - The Elk Fire is 43 acres, in steep country with heavy dead and down. Containment is 98%.   

The firefighters on the incident have completed fireline construction and are mopping up. 

Resources currently working on the fire:

  • 5 20-person hand crews
  • 1 wildland fire module
  • 4 falling modules
  • 2 water tenders
Fire managers are anticipating significant resource demobilization tomorrow.

April 7, 2021 - As of this morning fire behavior on the Elk Fire continues to be minimal.  Estimated acreage remains at 50 acres, with 50% containment.  

The firefighters on the incident are continuing to construct fireline and mopping up.

Approximately 200 personnel are currently working on the fire:

  • 10 type-3 engines
  • 2 type-6 engines
  • 5 20-person hand crews
  • 1 wildland fire module
  • 1 dozer
  • 4 falling modules
  • 2 water tenders

April 6, 2021 - As of this morning fire behavior on the Elk Fire has moderated significantly.  Estimated acreage remains at between 50 and 75 acres, without significant increase in the fire's size.  At this point, detailed mapping of the actual acreage has not been completed.

The firefighters on the incident are making good progress toward getting line around the fire.

Approximately 200 personnel are currently working on the fire:

  • 10 type-3 engines
  • 2 type-6 engines
  • 5 20-person hand crews
  • 1 wildland fire module
  • 1 dozer
  • 4 falling modules
  • 2 water tenders

Big Mountain Prescribed Burn complete

Yesterday, Wednesday April 28, fire staff completed the Big Mountain Prescribed Burn (total = 975 acres).  Personnel and equipment will be on site today, Thursday April 29, monitoring and mopping up any areas that need attention.  Rain is forecasted today and tomorrow in the burn area.

This completes Spring 2021 Monongahela National Forest prescribed burning.

According to fire dispatch: the Big Mountain Prescribed Burn is going well! 

This morning, fire staff began burning on both the western and eastern sides of the burn area.  As of 2 p.m., one western block is complete and one eastern block is halfway complete.  As long as conditions remain favorable, fire staff will burn block by block until they meet in the middle of the burn area, finishing the entire burn.

Prescribed burning has begun

The test fire was successful.  Fire staff are continuing with the prescribed burn in the Big Mountain area south of Circleville in Pendleton County.  The burn area is closed to the public.  Residents and visitors may see or smell smoke for several days.
